Land issue: Visva-Bharati hopeful Amartya Sen will respond to eviction notice by next week

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Visva-Bharati is hopeful that Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who is accused of illegally holding a 13-decimal plot owned by the university, will respond by next week to an eviction notice sent to him.

Otherwise, the central university said it will take any decision deemed appropriate to recover “unauthorisedly occupied land”.

The eviction notice, pasted near the main gate of Sen’s Santiniketan residence on Friday, which was also mailed to him, said that the “proceedings will be disposed of on April 19 through a final order”.

    MS Education Academy

The 89-year-old economist is now abroad.

“He (Sen) is yet to respond to the notice. We will wait for a few more days… till the middle of next week as specified in the notice,” Visva-Bharati spokesperson Mahua Banerjee told PTI on Saturday.

According to the notice, Sen or his advocates or authorised representatives may remain present during the disposal and passing of the final order at 12 noon on April 19. He can also submit a written statement by 6 pm on April 18 as the “last chance”.

The university has been claiming that Sen is in possession of 1.38 acres of land on the Santiniketan campus, which is in excess of his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres.

Denying the charges, Sen has repeatedly accused the varsity authorities of harassing him as he is a critic of several actions of Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty, and voiced his objection to certain policies of the Narendra Modi government.

  • BRS failed to provide land to Dalits in Telangana: Kharge

BRS failed to provide land to Dalits in Telangana: Kharge

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Friday targeted the BRS government in Telangana, accusing it of not fulfilling its promises, including providing three acres of land to Dalits.

He also said that it was because of his party that a person like him with a humble background could have a long political career and become an MLA and MP.

Kharge, who addressed a ‘Jai Bharat Satyagraha Sabha’ at Mancherial in Telangana Friday night, said he would not have been a lawmaker had Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi not encouraged a “poor man” like him.

    MS Education Academy

He said that Sonia Gandhi gave him an opportunity to work as the president of the Congress which is a huge responsibility.

Hitting out at the BJP government at the Centre, he claimed that while Rahul Gandhi was given notice and disqualified from the Lok Sabha within 24 hours of his conviction in the 2019 defamation case, a BJP MP from Gujarat was not disqualified despite being convicted in a criminal case.

Kharge, however, did not name the MP from Gujarat.

The Congress chief also accused the Narendra Modi government of weakening the public sector and not creating crores of jobs as promised.

Hailing the contributions of Dr B R Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, Kharge said it was because of the architect of the Constitution that Dalits and women got voting rights.

  • SC confirms HC order quashing land acquisition for Vedanta University

SC confirms HC order quashing land acquisition for Vedanta University

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday confirmed the 2010 Orissa High Court decision to quash acquisition of 6,000 acres of land in 2006 for Anil Agrawal-led Vedanta Resources Ltd to establish a university there.

A bench of Justices M.R. Shah and Krishna Murari said: “It is not appreciable why the government offered such an undue favour in favour of one trust/company. Thus, the entire acquisition proceedings and the benefits, which were proposed by the state government were vitiated by favourism and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution of India.”

It said the most important aspect, which is required to be considered is the non-application of mind by the state government on environmental aspects and passing of two rivers from the acquired lands in question.

    MS Education Academy

It is not in dispute that from the lands in question two rivers, namely Nuanai and Nala are flowing, which as such were acquired by the state government, it added.

“How the maintenance of the rivers etc. can be handed over to the beneficiary company. If the lands in question are continued to be acquired by the beneficiary company, the control of the rivers would be with the said private company, which would violate the Doctrine of Public Trust,” said the bench.

It added that the large-scale construction for the establishment of the proposed university as observed by the high court will also adversely affect the wildlife sanctuary, entire ecosystem, and the ecological environment in the locality. “It is a duty of the state to protect the wildlife sanctuary and it may affect the entire ecosystem and the ecological environment in the locality,” said the bench.

It further added that merely because the Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary is separated from the proposed site by a highway – Pthe uri-Konark Marine Drive, cannot be a ground to acquire the huge lands for the proposed university and as rightly observed by the high court, the same will adversely affect the wildlife sanctuary and the entire ecosystem and the ecological environment in the locality.

“The aforesaid aspects have not at all been considered by the state government and/or the Collector and/or the appropriate authority even while considering the proposal and/or even the objections under Section 5A of the Act, 1894,” said the bench.

The top court dismissed the appeal filed by the Anil Agrawal Foundation against the judgment of the high court and also imposed a Rs 5 lakh cost. The bench said initially, 15,000 acres was proposed to be acquired, which is now reduced to 3,837 acres, meaning thereby, the proposal was for exaggerated demand and this was mala fide intention on the part of the appellant company/foundation.

The bench observed that it is required to be noted that the lands were proposed to be acquired at the instance of one foundation/company and the state government was dealing with the lands belonging to the agricultural landowners.

“It is required to be noted that the government is holding a public trust and has to deal with the lands belonging to private landowners, more particularly, agricultural landowners in accordance with law. The state government could not have considered the proposal from only one beneficiary/trust. There may be other public trusts/companies, who might be interested in establishing such a university. Even no proper inquiry seems to have been initiated by the government/Collector while considering the proposal by the beneficiary company,” said the bench, in its 103-page judgment.

The bench noted that the lands to be acquired are agricultural lands belonging to 6,000 families and their only source of livelihood is on the agricultural lands, which cannot be compensated in terms of money, therefore, the proposal made now has to be rejected outright.

Citing the detailed findings recorded by the high court, the bench said: “We are more than satisfied that the High Court has not committed any error and in fact the High Court was justified in setting aside the entire acquisition proceedings, which has been vitiated by non-compliance of the statutory provisions under the Act, 1894 and the Rules, 1963 and vitiated by mala fides and favourism and is a clear case of the non-application of mind on relevant aspects. We are in complete agreement with the view taken by the High Court.”

Tejashwi leaves ED headquarters after 8 hrs questioning in ‘land for jobs’ case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday left the Enforcement Directorate headquarters here after being questioned for eight hours in connection with the alleged land for job case involving his father and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and other family members.

He reached the ED headquarters at 11 a.m. and left at around 9.10 p.m.

The CBI had questioned Tejashwi Yadav in the matter on March 25, and on the same day, his sister and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti was questioned.

    MS Education Academy

In March, the ED claimed unaccounted cash of Rs 1 crore, $1,900, 540 gms gold and 1.5 kg of gold jewellery and other incriminating documents were recovered during the raids conducted at 24 locations in Delhi, Mumbai, Patna and in Ranchi based on specific intelligence inputs.

The ED had said that they detected around Rs 600 crore in “proceeds of crime” which were in the form of immovable properties of Rs 350 crore and transactions of Rs 250 Crore routed through various benamidaars.

It alleged that the PMLA investigation conducted so far has revealed that several pieces of land at prominent locations in Patna and other areas were illegally acquired by the family of Lalu Prasad in lieu of jobs provided in Railways. The current market value of these land parcels is more than Rs 200 crore and several benamidars, shell entities and beneficial owners for these lands have been identified.

“A property situated at D-1088, New Friends Colony, Delhi (independent 4 storied bungalow, registered in the name of A.B. Exports Private Ltd, a company owned and controlled by Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and family) was shown to have been acquired at a value of mere Rs 4 lakh, the present market value of which is approximately Rs 150 crore,” the ED claimed.

An official claimed that huge amount of cash/Proceeds of Crime were infused in purchasing this property and few Mumbai-based entities, dealing in the gems and jewellery sector, were used to channel ill-gotten proceeds of crime in this regard.

“The property has been though, on paper, declared as office of A.B. Exports Private Ltd and AK Infosystems Pvt Ltd, is being exclusively used as residential premises by Tejashwi Prasad. During the searches, Tejashwi Prasad was found to be staying at this house and was found to be using this house as his residential property,” the ED alleged.

The ED said that their investigation has found that 4 parcels of lands acquired by the family of Lalu Yadav for just Rs 7.5 lakh from poor Group-D applicants were sold to former RJD MLA Syed Abu Dojana by Rabri Devi with huge gains at Rs 3.5 crore.

It said that their investigation has further revealed that a major portion of the amount thus received, was transferred to the account of Tejashwi Prasad.

  • BJP MLA demands action against Azam Khan for allegedly misusing govt land

BJP MLA demands action against Azam Khan for allegedly misusing govt land

    [ad_1]

Difficulties for Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Azam Khan do not seem to be abating. The demand for action has intensified on Darul Awam, the Samajwadi Party office of Azam Khan in Rampur. Allegations have surfaced that the place from where Samajwadi Party’s district office Darul Awam is being operated in Rampur is government land. In 2012, Azam Khan had taken it from the government on lease for 30 years for Rs. 100 per year to open the office of his Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. It has been alleged that Azam Khan is running the party office in the name of the trust.

BJP MLA Akash Saxena has complained about this to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, alleging that Azam Khan has run the office of the Samajwadi Party at this place in violation of the terms of the lease. The demand of the BJP MLA is that the government should take over the land after canceling its lease. The district administration has also started an investigation into the complaint of the BJP MLA. According to the Rampur district administration, the matter is being investigated, and action will be taken based on evidence.

Azam Khan had taken this land on lease in 2012 as soon as Akhilesh Yadav’s SP came to power in Uttar Pradesh. Two leases were written, one for 25109 square feet area and the other for 16072 square feet area, with the rent for both fixed at only Rs. 100-100 per year. Both these leases were written between Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust Chairman Azam Khan (lessee) and the authorized officer (lessor) PN Tripathi, Deputy Secretary, Department of Secondary Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, on behalf of the Governor of UP.

    MS Education Academy

This land was given to Azam Khan’s Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust to build a university and its office, but the BJP MLA alleges that Azam Khan is continuously conducting his party’s political activities from here and is using it for SP’s district office, which is a violation of rules. Therefore, the lease should be canceled, and action should be taken against Azam Khan for misusing government land.

Earlier, the office of Murtuja Higher Secondary School and District Basic Education Officer Rampur was established on this land. After taking this land on lease, Azam Khan has run his Rampur Public School in one part and SP office Darul Awam on the other part. However, Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust had leased this land for the purpose of opening an office for building a university, which was taken. That’s why now BJP MLAs are demanding that the lease be canceled and the land be handed over to the government.

On the complaint of the BJP MLA, the district administration has started an investigation of this matter in Rampur. In this matter, Samajwadi Party leader Mashkoor Ali Munna says that all the work of Samajwadi Party is done from Azam Khan’s office Darul Awam in Rampur, and the meetings of the party are also held from there only. However, Azam Khan has not revealed whose land it is until now.

Salman Khan’s song shot on Chiranjeevi’s land in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Indian film industry is no stranger to extravagant sets and filming locations. Filmmakers go to great lengths to create visually stunning films, from sprawling outdoor locations to massive indoor sets. The massive temple set erected for Megastar Chiranjeevi’s ‘Acharya’ film in Hyderabad’s outskirts has sparked the interest of many.

The set, which was reportedly built on Chiranjeevi’s own land in the Kokapet area, cost around Rs. 25 crores and was built by art producer Suresh Selvarajan. However, what many may not know is that the same set was modified into a village set for Bollywood star Salman Khan’s upcoming film, ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’.

According to sources, Salman Khan and the film’s main crew were in Hyderabad in the first week of June last year to begin shooting for Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan on the same set. Farhad Samji directed the film, which also stars Venkatesh in a key role, with Pooja Hegde playing the female lead.

    MS Education Academy

The artificial mini-temple town of Dharmasthali, which was a special attraction of the Acharya set itself, is one of the most unique aspects of the film set. The grand temple structure was built within the set’s premises, adding grandeur and authenticity to the film’s setting.

Interestingly, the latest song from ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan,’ ‘Yentamma,’ was shot on the same set. The song includes a special appearance by Ram Charan, making it even more entertaining and engaging for film fans.
