Mumbai: Two persons, including a 62-year-old man, were arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday for allegedly making fake passports and visas and issuing bogus COVID test reports, an official said.

The police are on the lookout for the third member of the gang, he said.

The trio operated from a flat in suburban Andheri. The Crime Branch raided the apartment and seized 28 duplicate passports, 24 bogus visas of different countries and several fake COVID test certificates, said the official.

Fake immigration rubber stamps of many countries were found in the flat, he said.

The police have learnt that the trio was charging lakhs to make fake passports and visas. They suspect the gang has already sent many people out of India with the help of the fake documents made by it.

The trio had made 414 fake rubber stamps carrying the names of government departments and officials, and bank staffers. There were fake rubber stamps in the name of officials from the state-run JJ hospital to issue COVID test certificates, which are required for travel to some countries, the official said.

The Crime Branch also recovered stickers with images of the national emblem and the logo of the Income Tax department.

Three colour printers, scanners and seven pen drives were seized from the flat, said the official.

The trio was booked for cheating and forgery under the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Passport Act.

A court has remanded the arrested persons in police custody till February 4, the official added.

Palanpur: A court in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on Wednesday convicted the accused in a 2019 triple murder case – all the victims being members of his family – and sentenced him to death.

Additional District Judge, Deodar, K.S. Hirpara said that considering the testimony of eye-witnesses and the gruesome crime committed by Bhikkhaji Thakor, it has considered it as “a rarest of rare case” and hence, handed down capital punishment.

Providing a brief history of the case, he said that Thakor was living with his mother, wife, and son in Bhakadiyal village. In 2019, he was not working to meet the financial needs of the family, so his mother scolded him. This irked him and in a fir of anger, he killed his mother, wife and son with an axe.

When family member saw the act, Bhikhaji’s sister-in-law tried to intervene and stop him, he hit her with an axe on her spine, and she was lucky to survive. Court has sentenced Thakor to a life term for an attempt to murder his sister-in-law, the Additional Public Prosecutor said.

  • Security tightened in J-K for Republic Day

Security tightened in J-K for Republic Day

    [ad_1]

Jammu/Srinagar: On the eve of country’s Republic Day, extraordinary security arrangements were put in place on Wednesday to ensure hassle-free official functions and celebrations.

In light of twin blasts in Jammu city two days ago, authorities have tightened security deploying all resources to ensure that the terrorists and anti-national elements are kept at bay.

Human intelligence augmented by technology and electronic surveillance have been put in place especially in Jammu and Srinagar cities.

Aerial surveillance by drones, CCTV cameras mounted at traffic crossings, crowded places, vital installations and sensitive establishments together with sharpshooters of the security forces manning vantage positions around the main parade venues in Jammu and Srinagar are some of the highlights of heightened security around the Republic Day.

In contrast to past many years, there was no tension in Srinagar city and other cities and towns of the Valley around this year’s Republic Day.

Despite these arrangements, people moved freely in markets and on streets and the ubiquitous presence of the security forces did not evoke any fear among the pedestrians in Srinagar and other places.

No separatist leader or group has given any boycott call on the eve of the Republic Day this year as well.

In fact, ever since August 2019 when article 370 was abrogated, separatist leaders and their sympathisers have kept a low profile and refrained from giving protest and shutdown calls that had become a routine till 2019.

The main Republic Day parade is being held at the Maulana Azad stadium in Jammu city where the Lt. Governor, Manoj Sinha will hoist the national flag and take salute at the parade.

In Srinagar, the main function is being held at the S.K. Cricket Stadium where Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir), P.K. Pole will hoist the tricolour and take salute at the parade.

At all other district headquarters, concerned district development commissioners will preside over the official functions connected with the Republic Day.

Frisking of commuters at different places in and outside Srinagar city and checking of vehicles at various places by the security forces continued on Wednesday.

Makeshift drop gates manned by police and CRPF have come up near different vital installations where entry and exit of people and vehicles are regulated.

Metal detectors, electronic equipment and sniffer dogs are also used to ensure foolproof security.
