  • Material decline in NPAs, info on wilful defaulters to be published, RBI to SC

Material decline in NPAs, info on wilful defaulters to be published, RBI to SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The RBI has told the Supreme Court that it has accepted the recommendations of a high-level committee that list of defaulters must be published by banks on their websites, where either the defaulters’ name is already in the public domain or their secured assets are possessed under the Sarfaesi Act.

The RBI, in a written response, said: “Reserve Bank’s resolute efforts have resulted in material decline in the NPAs of the banking system.”

It added that the recently-issued Financial Stability Report of the Reserve Bank on December 29, 2022 indicates that the gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio of banks has been steadily trending down to a seven-year low of 5 per cent in September 2022, while net non-performing assets (NNPA) have dropped to a ten-year low of 1.3 per cent of total loans.

“The Reserve Bank continues to monitor the situation and would assure to take prudent measures in discharge of its statutory mandate, to ensure a sound and resilient financial system, in the interest of all the stakeholders,” it added.

Advocates Prashant Bhushan and Pranav Sachdeva, representing NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation, alleged loans were given at the behest of politicians. The apex court had asked the banking regulator to respond to the allegations that despite bank accounts of many big companies having been declared as ‘fraud’, lenders still dither in reporting such matters to either police or the CBI.

In the affidavit, the RBI further contended that necessary instructions are being issued mandating banks to examine and take a formal view on classifying an account as a case of wilful default, within 60 days of the account becoming an NPA (applicable for exposures greater than Rs 50 crore).

“Issuance of directions governing publication of the list of defaulters by banks wherever recovery action is required to be in public domain,” it added.

The RBI said even directions mandating the Trust and Retention Accounts (TRA) for all types of consortium lending are being issued. It further added that to prevent the diversion of funds by unscrupulous borrowers, which was also the rationale behind the committee’s recommendation of mandating TRA accounts, the measures essentially aimed at addressing the growing menace of NPAs in the banking system were taken.

On Wednesday, a bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul gave a four-weeks’ time to RBI to inform on the steps it can take as the regulator qua the committee’s recommendations to tackle bad loans.

The apex court is hearing a case connected with writing off thousands of crores of loans by lenders. In December last year, the court had asked the government and the RBI to submit an affidavit explaining why the lenders should not file criminal cases against loan defaulters and why the recommendations of an expert panel on banking reforms have yet to be implemented.

  • President Murmu hails India’s G20 presidency

President Murmu hails India’s G20 presidency

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu, in her first Republic Day-eve speech, hailed India’s G-20 presidency, saying it is an opportunity to promote democracy and multilateralism, and also the right forum for shaping a better world and a better future.

“India holds the presidency of the Group of 20 nations. With our motto of universal brotherhood, we stand for peace and prosperity of all. Thus, the G20 presidency is an opportunity to promote democracy and multilateralism and the right forum for shaping a better world and a better future. Under India’s leadership, I am sure, the G20 will be able to further enhance its efforts to build a more equitable and sustainable world order.”

She said the ultimate goal is to create an environment in which all citizens can — individually and collectively, realise their true potential and prosper.

The President also commended the roles of farmers, workers, scientists and engineers in the nation’s development and also praised the armed forces and para-military forces.

“I commend the roles of farmers, workers, scientists and engineers whose combined strength enables our country to live up to the spirit of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan’. I appreciate every citizen who contributes to the nation’s progress. I also convey my greetings to our diaspora, the great ambassadors of India’s culture and civilisation,” she said.

“As education builds the right foundation for this purpose, the National Education Policy has introduced ambitious changes. It rightly addresses the two-fold aims of education: as an instrument of economic and social empowerment and as a means to explore truth. The policy makes our civilisational lessons relevant for contemporary life, while also preparing the learner for the 21st century challenges. The National Education Policy appreciates the role of technology in expanding and deepening the learning process,” she said.

President Murmu said the pandemic has entered the fourth year, affecting economic growth in most parts of the world. In its initial phase, Covid-19 also hurt India’s economy badly.

“Most sectors of the economy have shaken off the pandemic effect. India has been among the fastest-growing major economies. This has been made possible by timely and pro-active interventions from the government,” she said.

Murmu said that by implementing the ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana’ announced in March 2020, the government ensured food security for poor families at a time when the country was facing economic disruption in the wake of the unprecedented outbreak of Covid-19.

“Because of this help, no one had to go hungry. Keeping the welfare of poor families paramount, the duration of this scheme was extended successively, benefiting about 81 crore fellow citizens,” she said.

She further said the ‘Gaganyaan’ programme to carry Indian astronauts into space is under progress.

“This will be India’s maiden human space flight. Yet, even as we reach out to the stars, we keep our feet on the ground… and the Mars Mission was powered by a team of extraordinary women, and our sisters and daughters are not far behind in other areas too. Women’s empowerment and gender equality are no longer mere slogans, as we have made great progress towards these ideals in recent years,” the President said.

She said that to lift more and more people out of poverty, “we need economic growth, but that growth also comes from fossil fuel”.

  • AAP to launch foray into Rajasthan with massive membership drive

AAP to launch foray into Rajasthan with massive membership drive

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The AAP is set to roll out a massive membership drive in Congress-ruled Rajasthan on Friday as part of its preparations for the assembly polls, likely to be held later this year.

The membership drive will be launched in Jaipur by AAP National General Secretary (Organisation) Sandeep Pathak.

Vinay Mishra, the AAP’s election in-charge for Rajasthan, will also be present.

“The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) National General Secretary Sandeep Pathak and Rajasthan Election In-charge Vinay Mishra will launch a massive membership drive in Rajasthan on January 27,” a senior AAP leader told PTI.

The membership drive will be rolled out at Biyani Group of College in Jaipur, the AAP leader said.

“All the leaders and workers of the AAP’s Rajasthan unit will be present on the occasion,” the leader added.

The move comes within a month of AAP poll strategist Pathak, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, holding a crucial meeting with the party’s Rajasthan unit leaders and volunteers in the national capital. During the meeting, he asked them to pull up their socks to make the party’s foray into the Congress-ruled state a success.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party set its eyes on Rajasthan soon after it stormed to power in Punjab, crushing the ruling Congress in the assembly polls last March.

The party, which could not open its account in its maiden foray into Rajasthan in the 2018 assembly polls, has decided to field candidates in all 200 seats this time.

The AAP contested from 142 assembly seats in the 2018 Rajasthan polls but failed to win a single one.

Buoyed by its electoral success in the assembly polls in Punjab, Goa and Gujarat last year that paved the way for it to earn national party status, the AAP is hoping to gain some toehold in Rajasthan this time.

While the Kejriwal-led party recorded a stupendous victory in the Punjab polls, it managed to breach the BJP’s Gujarat bastion, winning five seats and securing 13 per cent of the vote share in the assembly elections held in two phases in December.

Earlier last year, it won two seats in the Goa assembly polls.

41 Kuwaiti MPs call to boycott Sweden over burning of Quran

    [ad_1]

Kuwait: Kuwaiti MPs condemned the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by an extremist with the approval of the Swedish government, and called for a boycott of all countries that do not respect the sanctities of Muslims.

In a statement reported on Tuesday, 41 MPs condemned the burning of the Holy Quran, in a scene that is repeated from time to time with the approval of governments and in violation of all international norms, laws and covenants, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaa reported.

The MPs’ said that these practices provoke the feelings of Muslims around the world, expressing their condemnation of the position of the Swedish government, which granted permission to burn the Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

They appealed to all parliamentarians in the world to boycott the Swedish government and all governments that do not respect the constants of Muslims. They emphasized that these practices “do not undermine the sanctity of the Quran in the heart of every civilized person.”

According to the Arabic daily Al Qabas, on January 23, the cooperative societies in Kuwait announced a boycott of Swedish products in protest of the provocative act.

On January 21, 2023, the leader of the Danish far-right hard line party, Rasmus Paludan, burned a copy of the Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, amid tight police protection that prevented anyone from approaching him while he was committing the provocative act.

All Arab countries issued statements of condemnation and denunciation, and considered the incident “a serious provocation to the feelings of Muslims around the world.”

Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah considered that these events “would inflame the feelings of Muslims around the world, and constitute a dangerous provocation for them.”

Angry reactions increased, which turned into popular calls for a comprehensive Arab and Islamic economic and commercial boycott of Sweden.

  • ‘Should I keep working hard?’: Google layoff survivors ask top bosses

‘Should I keep working hard?’: Google layoff survivors ask top bosses

    [ad_1]

New York: Employees, who survived the recent layoffs at Google, are worried and have demanded assurances that their jobs are not next to be axed by the company during a recent all-hands meeting with top bosses.

As Google’s parent company Alphabet chopped six per cent of its workforce globally, an employee based in the UK told management that “psychological safety is paramount”, the New York Post reported.

The employee, who had trouble processing the news like many of his colleagues, said: “How are we supposed to ever feel safe again?”

According to the report, most of the 12,000 people, including Indians, axed by the tech giant were high performers and people on immigration visas.

The professionals with an H-1B visa will have to leave the country in 60 days if they are unable to find another alternative to sustain.

“Should I keep working super hard? Does it matter?” another employee wondered.

Among those who were handed pink slips were employees who “had previously received high performance reviews” or had annual compensation packages of $500,000 to $1 million.

“The layoffs seem random,” one employee wrote in a question that was submitted to top Google executives via the company’s internal messaging system, the Post reported.

Denying that the layoffs were done “randomly”, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai had said earlier that he is “deeply sorry” for reducing the workforce.

In an email to employees, Pichai said he takes “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here”.

In the US, Google will pay employees during the full notification period (minimum 60 days) and also offer a severance package starting at 16 weeks salary, plus two weeks for every additional year at Google, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU (Google stock) vesting.

The layoffs at Google’s parent company were expected amid the deepening funding winter that has hit companies of all sizes in the global slowdown and recession fears.

  • Source codes of League of Legends, TFT stolen after cyber attack: Riot Games

Source codes of League of Legends, TFT stolen after cyber attack: Riot Games

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Video game developer Riot Games said that the source codes for its popular video games ‘League of Legends’ and ‘Teamfight Tactics’, or TFT, were stolen in a recent cyber attack, alongside the code for one of its anti-cheat platforms.

“Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed source code for League, TFT, and a legacy anticheat platform were exfiltrated by the attackers,” the company tweeted.

Earlier this week, Riot disclosed the breach as a “social engineering attack” on Twitter, assuring players that an update would be provided after an investigation.

The video game developer also received a ransom email from attackers, which the company says it won’t pay.

Moreover, the company assured that no player data or personal information was compromised, but acknowledges that the source code obtained by the attacker could result in new cheats.

“While this attack disrupted our build environment and could cause issues in the future, most importantly we remain confident that no player data or player personal information was compromised,” tweeted Riot Games.

“Truthfully, any exposure of source code can increase the likelihood of new cheats emerging. Since the attack, we’ve been working to assess its impact on anticheat and to be prepared to deploy fixes as quickly as possible if needed,” it added.

The company further mentioned that “it will release a full report in the future detailing the attackers’ techniques, the areas where Riot’s security controls failed, and the steps we’re taking to ensure this doesn’t happen again”.

  • Air India offers nearly 98 crore shares to employees under stock option scheme

Air India offers nearly 98 crore shares to employees under stock option scheme

    [ad_1]

Mumbai/New Delhi: Air India has offered around 98 crore shares of the company to its permanent employees as part of a stock option scheme.

The shares are also being offered to the permanent staff of Air India Express as part of the Employees’ Share Benefit (ESB) Scheme 2022, according to a document.

The Tata group took over the control of Air India and Air India Express from the government on January 27, 2022.

An airline official told PTI that around 8,000 employees will benefit from the scheme.

“In accordance with the share purchase agreement signed as part of the disinvestment process, Air India has initiated the Employee Share Benefit Scheme for eligible employees who were in service with the airline on the date of privatisation.

“We will be working with the relevant employees to help them understand the long term benefits and avail of the same,” an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

Those who were permanent employees at the two carriers — Air India and Air India Express — at the time of the takeover will be eligible to participate in the scheme where the share is offered at a price of 27 paise apiece, as per the document sent to the staff.

A source said the price is at a discount compared to the book value of 87-90 paise per share at the time of acquisition.

An employee trust has been set up to administer the ESB scheme.

“The company has authorised the trust to offer ESB benefits on no more than three per cent of the shares of the company purchased by Talace i.e., 97,99,56,600 to the eligible employees from time to time, in one or more tranches, acquired by the trust from Talace for nil monetary consideration.

“The trust shall hold the ESB shares to provide the ESB benefit to the eligible employees upon the payment of the aggregate exercise price together with all applicable taxes and amounts…,” the document said.

Talace, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, acquired Air India, Air India Express and the government’s 50 per cent stake in Air India SATS Airport Services Pvt Ltd.

“.. any eligible employee retiring on or after January 27, 2022, will be deemed to be an eligible employee and will be entitled to the benefits in accordance with and subject to the terms of this scheme,” as per the document.

A source at Air India Express said the airline has around 1,600 employees, majority of whom are contractual staff. It has about 300 pilots who are on permanent rolls, the source added.
