  • Sensex, Nifty go into a tailspin after ‘fraud’ report on Adani group

Sensex, Nifty go into a tailspin after ‘fraud’ report on Adani group

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty plunged over 1 per cent to close at three-month lows on Friday due to selling in banking, financials, utilities and oil shares triggered by an unfavourable report on Adani group as well as FIIs taking a cautious stance ahead of the Union budget.

Continuing its decline for a second session, the 30-share BSE benchmark tanked 874.16 points or 1.45 per cent, its biggest single day loss in more than a month, to settle at 59,330.90. This is the lowest closing level since October 21.

During the day, Sensex plunged 1,230.36 points or 2.04 per cent to 58,974.70.

The broader NSE Nifty fell 287.60 points or 1.61 per cent to end at a three-month low of 17,604.35, also marking its worst single-day fall since December 23, 2022.

“Indian benchmark equity gauges Sensex and Nifty hit their over three month lows on Friday, dragged by massive selling mainly in Adani group and banking stocks. Adani shares were in the line of the fire following the Hindenburg report accusing the group of serious irregularities,” said Devarsh Vakil, Deputy Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services also said that the sharp slump in the Indian market was triggered by an unfavourable research report on Asia’s richest promoter group companies.

“This is also affecting the banking stocks even though the results of the sector are optimistic due to high group lending, indicating potential risk. PSU banks are the most impacted compared to private banks owing to high exposure. The FIIs’ cautious stance ahead of the Union Budget and FOMC meetings also fuelled the collapse.”

From the Sensex pack, SBI fell the most by 5.03 per cent. ICICI Bank by 4.41 per cent, IndusInd Bank by 3.43 per cent, Axis Bank by 2.07 per cent, Kotak Bank by 2.03 per cent, HDFC Bank by 1.96 per cent, Reliance by 1.9 per cent and HDFC by 1.87 per cent.

Bucking the trend, auto stocks Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra closed with gains. Tata Motors, which returned to profitability in the third quarter of FY23, rose the most by 6.34 per cent among Sensex shares. Mahindra & Mahindra advanced 0.71 per cent.

ITC and UltraTech Cement were also among the winners.

In the broader market, the BSE smallcap gauge tanked 1.89 per cent and midcap index fell by 1.29 per cent.

Among sectoral indices, utilities tanked 7.34 per cent, power tumbled 6.79 per cent while oil & gas (5.75 per cent), energy (5.22 per cent), telecommunication (3.79 per cent), commodities (3.27 per cent), bankex (3.06 per cent) and financial services (2.48 per cent) also declined.

FMCG, healthcare and auto ended in the green.

Adani group stocks took a beating falling up to 20 per cent after the US-based investment research firm Hindenburg Research made damaging allegations.

The group’s flagship Adani Enterprises, which launched the Rs 20,000 crore FPO on Friday, tanked 18.52 per cent. Adani Ports plunged 16 per cent, Adani Power by 5 per cent, Adani Green Energy by 19.99 per cent, and Adani Total Gas by 20 per cent.

In two days, the Adani group firms have lost a whopping Rs 4,17,824.79 crore from their market valuation. The market valuation of Adani Total Gas plummeted Rs 1,04,580.93 crore while that of Adani Transmission by Rs 83,265.95 crore.

Adani Enterprises market capitalisation fell by Rs 77,588.47 crore, Adani Green Energy lost Rs 67,962.91 crore and Adani Ports by Rs 35,048.25 crore.

The market valuation of Ambuja Cements declined by Rs 23,311.47 crore, Adani Power by Rs 10,317.31 crore, ACC by Rs 8,490.8 crore and Adani Wilmar by Rs 7,258.7 crore.

Elsewhere in Asia, equity markets in Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong ended in the green.

European benchmarks were trading higher during mid-session deals. Markets in the US had ended higher on Thursday.

Stock markets were closed on Thursday on account of Republic Day.

International oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 1.35 per cent to USD 88.65 per barrel.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 2,393.94 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data.

“Traders will now gear up for the next 2-big catalysts; interest-rate decision from the Federal Reserve to trickle in on February 1, and the Union Budget for 2023-24 to be presented on the same day,” said Prashanth Tapse – Research Analyst, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd.

2,967 tigers in India across 53 tiger reserves: Centre tells SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court that there are 2,967 tigers in the country spread across 53 tiger reserves, according to a 2018 report.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Anupam Tripathi in 2017 seeking to save endangered tigers whose numbers are dwindling across the country.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told a bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna that a lot of work has been done for the conservation of tigers and increasing their population.

The top court took note of the submission and adjourned the matter till March as Tripathi was not present.

“Heard ASG Aishwarya Bhati. As per the 2018 census, India has 2,967 tigers spread out in 53 tiger reserves. This number constitutes 70 per cent of the global number and figures point to the growth of the tigers. In the interest of justice, to give an opportunity to the petitioner, list on March 3,” the bench said.

The top court in 2017 had issued notice to the Ministry of Environment, the National Board for Wildlife and the National Tiger Conservation Authority on the plea which had also sought relocation of people living near tiger reserves.

The petition had said tigers were being killed either by poisoning by locals or the authorities, shooting by forest guards or by poaching.

    Egypt discovers 4,300-year-old gilded mummy

    [ad_1]

Cairo: Egypt’s renowned archaeologist Zahi Hawass has announced the discovery of “important tombs hosting a 4300-year-old mummy” in the Saqqara necropolis near the Pyramids of Giza.

“The mummy is the oldest and most complete unroyal mummy found in Egypt to date,” Xinhua news agency quoted Hawass as saying in a press conference on Thursday.

The mummy of a man, Hekashepes, covered with gold leaf, was found inside a large rectangular limestone sarcophagus in a room located under a 15-metre-deep shaft, the archaeologist said.

He added that many stone vessels were seen around the sarcophagus, which was completely sealed when the mission discovered it.

“The oldest mummy is part of the important discovery of a group of tombs that date back to the fifth and sixth dynasties of the Old Kingdom,” said Hawass, the director of the Egyptian excavation team working with the Supreme Council of Antiquities at Gisr el-Mudir area in Saqqara.

He explained that new discoveries indicated that the site comprises a large cemetery.

According to Hawass, a tomb that belonged to Khnumdjedef, an inspector of the officials, a supervisor of the nobles, and a priest in the pyramid complex of Unas, the last king of the fifth dynasty, is the most important one among the new discoveries.

Khnumdjedef’s tomb is decorated with inscriptions of daily life.

The second largest tomb belonged to Meri, who was a keeper of the secrets and assistant of the great leader of the palace.

The mission also found a third tomb for Messi, who is a priest of King Pepi I Meryre, the third king of the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt, and nine beautiful statues, which include one for the priest and his wife, several servant statues, and statues representing individuals.

Hawass added that the mission uncovered another 10-metre-deep shaft comprising a set of beautiful wooden statues, three stone statues representing a person named Fetek, an offering table, and a stone sarcophagus that contained his mummy.

The Egyptian mission also found many amulets, stone vessels, tools for daily life, and statues of the funerary deity Ptah-Sokar at the site, he added.

  • ‘Kejriwal’s guarantee’ fulfilled, says Mann as Punjab govt opens 400 new mohalla clinics

‘Kejriwal’s guarantee’ fulfilled, says Mann as Punjab govt opens 400 new mohalla clinics

    [ad_1]

Amritsar: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday launched 400 more ‘Aam Aadmi’ clinics in the state, calling the event here the fulfilment of another ‘Kejriwal ki guarantee’.

The 400 new ‘Aam Aadmi’ clinics take the total number of these neighbourhood health centres in the state to 500.

Kejriwal, the AAP convenor and Delhi chief minister, said he was happy to note that the Punjab government opened 500 mohalla clinics in just 10 months.

“I am happy to say that Bhagwant Mann has fulfilled one more ‘Kejriwal ki guarantee (Kejriwal’s guarantee)’,” the AAP chief said while referring to the party’s promises made to the people of Punjab in the run up to the 2022 assembly elections.

Five hundred mohalla clinics have been set up in Punjab and, in the time to come, more such facilities will come up, Kejriwal said.

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh and AAP MP Raghav Chadha were also present at the event.

Kejriwal said all the party’s “guarantees” would be fulfilled and asked the people of Punjab to “have patience” as he targeted the previous dispensations for “destroying” the system.

The AAP has already fulfilled its poll promise of 300 units of free electricity per month, the Delhi chief minister said.

The Mann government is taking action against corruption and will not spare anyone found to be involved in corrupt practices, he added.

Heaping praise on the Mann regime, Kejriwal said 26,000 government jobs had been provided in just the past 10 months and called it a “big thing”.

Jobs here are being provided on the basis of merit, he asserted.

Contractual employees are also being regularised, Kejriwal said.

On the education front, the Mann dispensation is sending 36 government school principals to Singapore for training, the Delhi chief minister added.

Punjab will also begin doorstep delivery of government services along the lines of Delhi, Kejriwal said, adding that this move would create around 6,000 jobs.

On law and order, Kejriwal said police had been given a free hand. Strict action is being taken against gangsters, he added while hitting out at the previous regimes for allegedly giving political patronage to criminals.

Kejriwal said Tata Steel would set up a plant in Ludhiana and more companies had shown interest in setting up their units in Punjab, for which he credited the efforts of Mann.

TDP leader Lokesh embarks on 4,000 km-long padyatra

    [ad_1]

Kuppam: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Nara Lokesh on Friday embarked on a 4,000 km-long state-wide padyatra, which is expected to gear up the opposition party for next year’s Assembly elections.

The young leader began the foot march from Kuppam constituency represented by party president and his father N. Chandrababu Naidu, to a massive public response and amid enthusiasm by party cadres.

Thousands of TDP workers and supporters joined Lokesh in the padyatra titled ‘Yuva Galam’ (youth’s voice).

The walkathon will cover 120 Assembly constituencies over the next 400 days across the state.

Lokesh launched the padyatra at 11.03 a.m. after special pooja Varadaraja Swamy temple. He also visited Mecca Masjid at Lakshmipuram and later Hebrass House of Worship Church at Bapunagar where he offered prayers and took the blessings of the community elders.

Lokesh’s father-in-law, popular actor and TDP MLA N. Balakrishna and cousin actor Nandamuri Taraka Ratna also participated in the pooja. Later, when the padyatra reached a mosque, Taraka Ratna fell down and fainted due to a stampede-like situation.

The actor was shifted to a private hospital. Balakrishna also rushed to the hospital.

The president of the state unit of the TDP, Atchen Naidu, party politburo members, and thousands of party cadres walked along Lokesh.

The main opposition party said that the sole aim of the padyatra is to end the “atrocious” rule of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. It is confident that the march will create a history in the state.

The party functionaries showered flowers on Lokesh wishing him all the best in his endeavour.

Women activists offered ‘aartis’ to give a grand welcome to the party general secretary, and the locals of Kuppam raised slogans like ‘Chandranna Bidda (Son of Mr Chandrababu Naidu) zindabad’.

The TDP leader will address a public meeting later in the day. Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the walkathon.

Chittoor district police has granted conditional permission for the march. The TDP said that the conditions imposed for Lokesh’s padyatra reflect Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government’s sense of insecurity.

The TDP leaders alleged that the government is trying to create hurdles for the padyatra.

  • Hyderabad: Tamilisai urges citizens to learn on spot CPR

Hyderabad: Tamilisai urges citizens to learn on spot CPR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In view of the sharp rise in cases of sudden heart attacks reported in recent times, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has urged that every citizen must learn the technique of performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Tamilisai participated in the free community hands only-CPR programme at Gandhi Medical College on Friday which emphasized that more people be trained in administering CPR correctly.

“Emphasised timely CPR as FIRST AID on the spot within a time frame called GOLDEN HOUR’S will be life-saving. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation must become a social movement. Everyone should learn it.”, stated the Governor in her tweet.

The workshop will be held for another two days at the medical college’s Alumni Association Building, Gandhi Hospital, Musheerabad.

It saw the participation of over 300 people including students, teachers, policemen and the general public attending day 1 of the free workshop.

Trainer and volunteer from the American Heart Association, Dennis McCauley gave a demonstration to the audience on how to handle a person who has suddenly collapsed before initiating CPR.

Giving a step-by-step demonstration, he said that the first thing to do is to move the suffering person to a safe place followed by checking the person for response (breathing) and lastly initiating CPR immediately if the person does not respond.

Compression during the CPR process is the crucial part, remarked the trainers, adding, “It has to be two fingers above the chest bone and that can be in the middle of the chest. Also, the compressions should be two inches deep and they should be at the rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.”

The programme was able to render useful information that many participants were unaware of, including those with medical backgrounds.

Performing CPR on an intoxicated person, CPR while the person is still breathing, etc were a few of the doubts the audience raised during the session.

Meanwhile, the alumni association has planned to put up Automated External Defibrillators (AED) at several locations across the city.
