Karnataka: BJP issues gag order to rein in disgruntled MLAs

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The BJP party high command has issued strict gag orders to rein in the disgruntled legislators from giving damaging statements, which can tarnish the image of the party in Karnataka.

Vijayapur MLA, Basanagoud Patil Yatnal’s statements against Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and former CM, BJP Central Parliamentary Board member B.S. Yediyurappa not only embarrassed the party but also sparked speculations.

He also targeted Minister for Large Industries Murugesh Nirani by using an inappropriate word, which triggered a bitter war of words between the two. Minister Nirani stated that if he does not mind his language, his tongue will be cut.

Similarly, many seniors voiced their concern over High Command’s decision not to expand the cabinet. Former ministers and senior leaders Ramesh Jarkiholi and K.S. Eshwarappa made a demand that since they got clean chit in allegations against them, they should be included in the cabinet.

BJP MLC A.H. Vishwanath had launched a direct attack on the saffron party by stating that BJP offered him money to quit JD(S). He also attacked senior politician, BJP MP Srinivas Prasad who called him a nomad. He also attacked BJP on its stand over boycotting Muslim traders.

The party was worried about the series of damaging statements. Chief Minister Bommai, after being attacked by own MLA Yatnal, maintained that action will be initiated. But, no action was initiated. The development raised suspicion that one of the camps within the BJP is supporting Yatnal.

However, as the assembly elections are fast approaching, as per the sources the high command taking no chances has issued a stern warning to all legislators not to issue any statements which will damage the image of the party and create confusion in public.

Yatnal had stated that he will not indulge in issuing statements against Yediyurappa and he will stop at this stage.

As per the sources, the party seniors have issued diktat on all legislators not to issue any damaging statements or give reactions on issues of leadership.

The party, which stated that it will go to assembly polls under the leadership of Bommai is now maintaining that the party would seek votes in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The opposition parties have taken potshots at the BJP over the stand and stated that there is no CM face in the saffron party in Karnataka.

Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is essential to the growth, development, metabolism, immunity, bone health, and mental health of people. Its deficiency has been linked to health disorders such as prostate cancer, depression, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and rickets.

Vice President, Medical Affairs, Tata 1mg, Dr Rajeev Sharma said, “Changing food habits and an indoor lifestyle with inadequate exposure to sunlight have led to a drastic increase in cases of vitamin D deficiency.  The much higher prevalence in young adults can also be attributed to lower consumption of vitamin D-containing foods like fortified cereals and oily fish.”

“However, seasonal variations in exposure to sunlight can also be a likely explanation, especially during winters. Unspaced and unplanned pregnancies in women with dietary deficits can lead to worsening of vitamin D status in both mother and child,” he added.

Clinical Head, Tata 1mg Labs, Dr Prashant said, “Vitamin D levels should be checked regularly in cases of obesity, mal-absorption syndrome or softening of the bones (osteomalacia), or if the patient is getting treatment for TB. The levels can also be checked along with regular full-body checkups, which are recommended to be done every six months or at least once a year. Infants and children under the age of five, pregnant and breastfeeding women, teenagers and young women, people over the age of 65, and those with limited sun exposure are the most vulnerable to deficiency.”

The human skin hosts a type of cholesterol that functions as a precursor to vitamin D. When exposed to UV-B radiation from the sun, it turns into vitamin D. Having enough exposure to sunlight and consuming foods rich in the vitamin such as egg yolks, oily fish, red meat, and fortified foods can help prevent the deficiency.

MP: 4 men enter abandoned coal mine, die after inhaling toxic gas

    [ad_1]

Shahdol: Four men who entered an abandoned underground mine in Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh allegedly with the intention to collect coal or scrap have died after inhaling toxic gas, a police official said on Friday.

The incident took place between 10pm and 11pm on Thursday in Dhanpuri, some 28 kilometres from the district headquarters, and the bodies were retrieved from the coal mine in the early hours of Friday, Superintendent of Police Kumar Prateek told PTI.

“The deceased have been identified as Raj Mahto (20), Hazari Kol (30), Rahul Kol (23) and Kapil Vishwakarma (21), all residents of Dhanpuri. The mine was closed for the last couple of years. Four persons entered the site, while one stood outside. The fifth person peeped inside after some time and found his associates unresponsive,” he said.

He alerted others, who called in the police, which put in four hours to retrieve the bodies of the men from inside the mine, the SP said.

“Initial investigations suggest the men died after inhaling toxic gas emanating from the closed mine. A case has been registered and probe is underway,” Prateek informed.

As per residents of the vicinity, the mine’s opening is covered with bricks and cement, but some try to enter with iron rods etc to look for coal or scrap.

  • Attempt being made to ‘make judiciary part of PMO’: Congress

Attempt being made to ‘make judiciary part of PMO’: Congress

    [ad_1]

Khanabal: Attacking the government, the Congress on Friday alleged that an “undeclared emergency” prevailed in the country and an attempt was being made to “make the judiciary part of the PMO”.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Bharat Jodo Yatra is aimed at highlighting such “dangers” facing the country.

Addressing a press conference here, Ramesh said the yatra is aimed at flagging increasing economic disparity, the RSS and the BJP allegedly spreading social polarisation for electoral advantage and the “political dictatorship” prevailing in the country.

“There is an undeclared emergency in the country. There is rule by one person, Parliament is being ignored, debates don’t take place in Parliament. One example is of the danger on our borders, two-and-a-half years have passed but it has not been discussed,” Ramesh said, referring to the border standoff between India and China.

“Constitution is being ignored, constitutional bodies are being weakened and an attempt is being made to destroy the judiciary. Everyday comments are being made, there is an attempt to make the judiciary part of the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office),” he alleged.

His remarks come in the backdrop of a raging debate on the issue of appointments to the higher judiciary with the government questioning the current collegium system and the Supreme Court defending it.

At the press conference, Ramesh said, “So this question why is the Congress out to unite India when nobody is breaking the country, we are saying it is getting divided, there are dangers and if we don’t act, the dangers will increase. So we are raising our voice against economic disparities, social polarisation and political dictatorship. We are taking on the BJP and the RSS ideologically. Election strategy has nothing to do with the yatra.”

“There are two ways — one way is of the RSS-BJP and according to their path they are using the cannon of ‘one person, one system’ and the other way is the way of harmony, the way of the Congress, the way of Mahatma Gandhi, the way of Rahul Gandhi, where the ‘shehnaai’ of democracy is being played…. These are the two ways that are before our country,” Ramesh said.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi started from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7. It will culminate with Gandhi unfurling the national flag at the party headquarters in Srinagar and addressing a grand rally at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium on January 30.

  • Apple temporarily halts its own Wi-Fi chip development

Apple temporarily halts its own Wi-Fi chip development

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Apple has reportedly halted the development of its in-house Wi-Fi chip “for a while”.

Many investors are worried that the tech giant’s efforts to develop its own Wi-Fi chip might negatively impact Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chip business, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a blogpost on Thursday.

The iPhone maker’s previous development for Wi-Fi solution was the Wi-Fi-only chip and not the Wi-Fi+Bluetooth combo chip.

Making a Wi-Fi+Bluetooth combination chip is more difficult than making a Wi-Fi-only chip from a design perspective.

As a result, it would be difficult for the tech giant to replace Broadcom’s combo chips with its own because the majority of Apple’s products employ the combo chip.

“The slowdown of processor upgrades is unfavourable to the sales of end products (such as A16 and M2 series chips),” Kuo said.

According to Kuo, the company has focused the majority of its integrated circuit (IC) design resources on the development of processors to make sure that the world’s most advanced 3nm processors can enter mass production smoothly in 2023-2025 and that the performance upgrade and power consumption improvement can significantly improve against predecessors.

He also mentioned that in the next two-three years, “Wi-Fi chips will usher in critical Wi-Fi 6E/7 upgrades.”
Therefore, it is riskier for the iPhone maker to use its own Wi-Fi chips “when the industry standard markedly changes”.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the company was working on a replacement for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip which it currently uses from Broadcom, and is planning to start integrating it into devices in 2025.

WhatsApp working on new software that uses Apple Mac Catalyst

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Meta-owned WhatsApp is working on a new Mac app that uses the Apple Mac Catalyst development environment to make better use of system resources.

According to AppleInsider, WhatsApp currently provides a web-based Electron app for Mac users in addition to its web app via browsers.

Electron and Catalyst are software development frameworks that help developers create desktop apps.

The new app has been in a closed beta for a few months, but now anyone can download the file on macOS Big Sur or later on the WhatsApp website, according to the report.

Following installation, it will display a QR code that users can scan with their iPhone to link their accounts using the WhatsApp iOS app.

The Mac app’s three-panel interface provides access to archived chats, starred messages, phone calls, and settings.

The Catalyst app includes features not available in the Electron version, such as file drag-and-drop and a spell-checker, the report mentioned.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has reportedly rolled out some new shortcuts for group admins to quickly and easily perform actions for a certain group participant, on iOS.

The new shortcuts simplify interactions with group members as now the platform supports large groups of up to 1,024 participants, reports WABetainfo.

The new update will help group admins quickly manage and communicate with such a large number of participants in private.

  • Google may release Pixel Tablet Pro with Tensor G2 chip

Google may release Pixel Tablet Pro with Tensor G2 chip

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Google will reportedly release a Pro version of its upcoming Pixel Tablet, which will feature a Tensor G2 chip.

According to leaker Kuba Wojciechowski, the tech giant initially started working on a tablet using the original Tensor chip but this project was then allegedly cancelled as the company began working on a tablet that used Tensor G2 instead, reports Android Authority.

The first device is expected to be the Pixel Tablet and the second device is likely to be the one coming to market this year, which might be the Pro model.

The leaker also mentioned that the only difference between the two devices is likely to be the chip powering them.

Last month, Wojciechowski discovered a device called “TangorPro” in the Google Camera Go application’s code.

As “Tangor” is believed to be the codename for the Pixel Tablet, “TangorPro” strongly indicated a Pro variant of the Pixel Tablet.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Pixel Tablet and its charging speaker dock have been leaked on Facebook Marketplace, a destination on Facebook where people can buy and sell items.

  • ‘Pathaan’ worldwide collection crosses Rs 200 crore mark

‘Pathaan’ worldwide collection crosses Rs 200 crore mark

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” continued to rake in big numbers at the global box office as the film’s worldwide collection on day two reached Rs 219.6 crore, the makers announced on Thursday.

According to production house Yash Raj Films (YRF), the SRK-Deepika Padukone starrer raised Rs 113.6 crore in worldwide gross on day two of its release. The film’s opening day figure was Rs 106 crore.

In the domestic market, the film’s net day two collection stood at Rs 70.5 crore (Rs 82.94 crore gross). The film’s Hindi version amassed Rs 68 crore in net earnings, with its dubbed formats bringing in additional Rs 2.5 crore. “Pathaan” was also released in Tamil and Telugu on Wednesday.

With its day two haul, the movie created another record — first Hindi film to breach the Rs 70 crore net collection on a single day.

Internationally, the film earned Rs 30.70 crore gross.

The Siddharth Anand directorial, which faced boycott calls over the song “Besharam Rang”, marks Shah Rukh’s return to movies after a gap of over four years. His previous film was 2018’s “Zero”.

“As an industry, we are rejoicing today. This is the most important sentiment emerging out of Pathaan’s success. All of us at Yash Raj Films are grateful for the incredibly humbling support from media, audiences and the industry towards ‘Pathaan’.

“It is this unanimous love for the film that has resulted in Pathaan shattering all existing records and creating new ones. We are happy that the film has entertained everyone in such an immersive manner,” Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, said in a statement.

With its record haul in the first two days of its release, “Pathaan” has exceeded the expectations of the industry experts who were banking on the action spectacle to bring some cheer in the industry after a series of box office duds.

“Pathaan” is the fourth film in producer Aditya Chopra’s ambitious spy universe, following Salman Khan’s “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) and “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017), and “War”, featuring Hrithik Roshan (2019).

The movie follows the titular spy Pathaan (Shah Rukh) who comes out of exile to stop terrorist group Outfit X, led by Jim (John Abraham), from launching a debilitating attack on India.

“Pathaan”, which according to YRF has broken some 21 box office records, also has a guest appearance by Salman as fellow spy Tiger.

Iraq sentences 14 people to death for mass killings of soldiers in 2014

    [ad_1]

Baghdad: An Iraqi court has sentenced 14 terrorists to death over the mass killings of about 1,700 soldiers when the Islamic State (IS) had seized Tikrit, the capital of Salahudin province, in 2014.

“The Central Criminal Court issued a verdict to execute the 14 terrorist criminals after establishing that they were involved in the Speicher massacre,” the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement.

In June 2014, armed Sunni terrorists, spearheaded by IS group, launched a surprise offensive on Iraqi security forces and captured a large part of the country’s northern and western territories after government troops abandoned their posts and military equipment.

Reports said that some 1,700 soldiers who walked out of an air base, known as Camp Speicher north of Tikrit, were abducted and killed by the IS.

The terror group later posted videos and photos showing its militants loading dozens of soldiers onto trucks, forcing them to lie face down and opening fire on them.

Some were shown being dragged to the edge of the Tigris River and thrown into the water after being shot in the heads.
