  • ‘Pathaan’ emerges as first film in 33 years to have houseful shows in Kashmir

‘Pathaan’ emerges as first film in 33 years to have houseful shows in Kashmir

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: People of Kashmir are queuing up to watch Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pathaan”, making it the first film to have houseful shows in 33 years in the Valley.

The cinema halls reopened in Kashmir last year after being shut for three decades due to threats and attacks by militants.

Vikas Dhar, owner of Kashmir’s only multiplex theatre, said all the shows of the spy thriller were houseful on the first day of its release on Wednesday.

“I did not know Shah Rukh Khan has such a massive fan following in Kashmir. All shows on the first day were fully booked while five of the seven shows on Republic Day were also sold out,” Dhar told PTI.

It was due to restrictions on movement of people on account of the Republic Day parade in the vicinity of the multiplex in Badamibagh area of the city that the first two shows had less than expected audience, he added.
Dhar opened his multiplex theatre last year in September. The theatre has three screens with a total capacity of 520 seats.

“This is after 33 years that people are queuing up to watch movies in Kashmir. This was the dream when we set out with this project and it has come true,” he said.

Besting boycott calls over the song “Besharam Rang”, “Pathaan” has performed phenomenally at the box office, raising Rs 219.6 crore gross worldwide in just two days. The film released on January 25 amid high security across the country.

Dhar said much-like the rest of the country, there has been no effect of the controversy on the film’s run. “Everyone here is coming for entertainment,” he added.

The Valley had nearly a dozen stand-alone cinema halls functioning till the late 1980s, but they had to wind up businesses after militant outfits threatened the owners.

Though attempts were made to reopen some of the theatres in the late 1990s, militants thwarted such efforts by carrying out a deadly grenade attack on Regal Cinema in the heart of Lal Chowk in September 1999.

Two other theatres — Neelam and Broadway — had opened their doors but had to shut business due to poor response.

Mohammad Iqbal, an avid cinema viewer, said the last time he saw a housefull board outside a theatre was in 1989 when Sunny Deol’s “Tridev” was released.

“It has been 33 years since I saw a house full board outside a theatre. The last I saw such a board was for Sunny Deol’s ‘Tridev’ in 1989 at Khayyam cinema,” he said.

“Pathaan ” opened on Wednesday in over 5,000 screens across the country. Due to high demand, the film’s total screen count was later increased to 8,500 worldwide.

A Yash Raj Films project, “Pathaan” is directed by Siddharth Anand. It also features John Abraham and Deepika Padukone.

The film is Shah Rukh’s first big screen release as a lead after over four years.

  • No talks in MVA over taking Prakash Ambedkar-led VBA on board: Sharad Pawar

No talks in MVA over taking Prakash Ambedkar-led VBA on board: Sharad Pawar

    [ad_1]

Kolhapur: Days after Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) forged an alliance, NCP leader Sharad Pawar on Saturday said that so far no talks were held among the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituents about taking the VBA on board.

Pawar said the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Thackeray-led Sena will contest the upcoming elections together.

He was talking to reporters at Kolhapur in western Maharashtra.

Responding to a query about the Sena (UBT) and VBA’s alliance, the former Union minister said, “No talks were held (in the MVA) regarding Prakash Ambedkar’s VBA ahead of the elections. We do not know what is going on between the two parties…we will not discuss anything over it.”

“Congress, NCP, and Thackeray-led Sena will together contest upcoming elections. We have not held any discussion with Ambedkar,” he said.

The NCP and Thackeray-led Sena are part of the MVA along with the Congress. The three-party alliance was in power from 2019 till the end of June last year. The government led by Thackeray collapsed following a rebellion by his party’s senior leader Eknath Shinde and his supporting MLAs, who joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and came to power.

The BJP has reportedly said that it will seek MVA’s support so that the upcoming by-polls to the Kasba and Chinchwad assembly seats in Pune are held unopposed. Byelections are necessitated as the sitting BJP MLAs from these seats died recently. When asked about it, Pawar said, “I don’t know to whom (state BJP chief) Chandrakant Patil is writing a letter about it. I have no information on that. I don’t know how he didn’t think about unopposed elections during the by-polls in Kolhapur and Pandharpur.”

When asked about the early morning oath-taking ceremony of Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar in November 2019, the NCP president replied, “It’s been two years now. Why are you raking up that topic?”

After the 2019 Assembly poll results, Fadnavis had returned as chief minister with Ajit Pawar as his deputy on November 23 that year. Both were sworn in a hush-hush early morning ceremony, but the government lasted only 80 hours.

On a query about Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao, Pawar said he is trying to bring together leaders of various parties.

Screened BBC documentary on institute’s campus: FTII students’ association

    [ad_1]

Pune: The students’ association of the Film and Television Institute of India screened the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Godhra riots on the campus of the premier acting school here, said the student body on Saturday.

“On 26/01/23, we screened the banned BBC documentary The Modi Question’ at FTII,” said a statement issued by the FTII Students’ Association.

The Centre had last week directed social media platforms Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary “India: The Modi Question”. The Ministry of External Affairs has trashed the documentary as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

Throughout history, the association’s statement said, the banning of literature, music, and in recent times, media, has been a sign of a crumbling society.

“The act of scrutiny should be welcomed by our elected representatives. Instead, they quickly tag it as false propaganda and try to shove it under the rug. They should know that the sure-fire way for something to be watched is to ban it.

“However, the BBC documentary barely scratches the surface of the kind of violence that has been perpetuated throughout the country for a dedicated, singular, vicious purpose. It would be startling to us if anyone in India was surprised by the happenings in this documentary,” said the students’ association.

FTII Registrar Sayyid Rabeehashmi said, “It is being reported that a group of students screened the documentary. The matter will be looked into.”

Over the past few days, students at many educational institutes, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Ambedkar University in the national capital, have tried to screen the controversial BBC documentary.

In Kerala, the Congress screened the programme on Thursday.

For a less Material look, pill-shaped buttons are used instead of rectangles with rounded corners.

By selecting one of the options — Energise, Workout, Relax, Commute, and Focus — YouTube Music gets updated with a feed of songs, albums, and playlists that match the mood.

Moreover, the music streaming platform also updates the background image at the top.

To go back to the main feed, users will need to click the mood they selected again, said the report.

Meanwhile, YouTube Music is reportedly testing a feature called — “live lyrics” with a tweaked Casting user interface (UI).

Some users have already received the new feature.

A Reddit user noticed a new UI while casting YouTube Music from an Android phone to a Chromecast Ultra.

Will quit BJP to join Congress, says Karnataka BJP MLC Vishwanath

    [ad_1]

Mysuru: Karnataka BJP MLC and senior party leader, H. Vishwanath on Saturday confirmed that he is quitting the ruling BJP and joining Congress.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar and state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, he said, he would join Congress either before the elections or after the elections in the state.

He also maintained that he does not have any difference of opinion with Opposition party leader Siddaramaiah. “We are always fine on personal levels. We studied law together and are friends,” he said.

“I was with Congress party for 40 years. I don’t bother about anything. I have always seen Congress party like a mother. I will not contest in upcoming assembly elections. Not even my children will face the polls,” he said.

“I was with JD(S) party and it was a party of one family members. Seven family members of former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy were cabinet ministers in the coalition government. Later, BJP came to power and administration was not good during BJP’s rule as well. Yediyurappa has continued corruption till date in the state,” he said.

“For all these reasons, I am supporting Congress. Pro-people governance is very important. More than joining Congress party, I support the party,” he added.

Vishwanath, who was the President of JD(S), had quit the party to join BJP. He was in the forefront of rebellion while ‘operation lotus’ was carried out in Karnataka by the ruling BJP.

MP: Congress leader in Jabalpur booked over offensive remarks

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: A Congress leader has been booked over his alleged offensive remarks during a public speech in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district, sources said on Saturday.

While addressing the people on Friday, district president of the Congress Nilesh Jain exhorted his supporters to tackle the corrupt with an iron hand. “First request the corrupt against corruption with folded hands, and if they don’t listen, then break their hands.”

He was booked the same day on the basis of a complaint registered by a Bharatiya Yuva Morcha of Jabalpur.

His utterances came a day after the state unit Congress kicked-started its ‘Hath Se Hath jodo’ campaign, a political march that will cover all 230 Assembly seats in the state. At the event, Jain said – “Haath jodo, nahi mane to brahmachari ke haath todo’ (First request the corrupt with folded hands, and if they don’t listen, then break their hands)”
