Iran reports drone attack on military facility

Tehran: Drones attacked a defence facility in Iran’s Isfahan city, media reports said.
“An explosion has occurred in one of the military centres affiliated to the Ministry of Defence,” deputy head of security for Isfahan Governorate Mohammad Reza Jan-Nesari told Fars News Agency, CNN reported.
Iran successfully repelled a drone attack on one of its military plants on Saturday, the defence ministry said in a statement after local media reported that a loud blast had been heard at a military plant in the city.
One of the drones was hit and brought down by the plant’s air defence system and the other two were caught in its defence traps and exploded, Islamic Republic News Agency reported quoting the statement.
No casualties were reported and the attack only caused slight damage to the roof of the defence equipment facility.

MP: WCR rechristens Hoshangabad rly station as Narmadapuram

Bhopal, Jan 29 (PTI) The West Central Railway (WCR) has renamed Hoshangabad railway station in Madhya Pradesh as Narmadapuram, an official said on Sunday.
The WCR had on Saturday issued a circular announcing the renaming of the station as Narmadapuram with the acronym NDPM, he said.
In February 2022, the Centre had cleared the proposal to rename Hoshangabad city as Narmadapuram, located about 75-km from state capital Bhopal.
Earlier this week, the state government had issued a gazette notification stating that the Centre had granted “no objection” for renaming the city’s railway station as well.
While giving the nod to rename Hoshangabad last year, the Centre had also cleared the proposal to rechristen Babai town in Narmadapuram district as Makhan Nagar, after noted Hindi poet and journalist Makhanlal Chaturvedi.
The Madhya Pradesh government’s renaming spree began in 2021 when it changed the name of Habibganj railway station as Rani Kamlapati after a Gond queen.
According to the state government website, Hoshangabad had derived its name from Hoshang Shah Ghori, the second king to Malwa of the Ghori line who conquered it.
Narmadapur had been the city’s erstwhile name.

Starting with pay parity, Binny-led BCCI sets gold standards

New Delhi: Under BCCI President Roger Binny’s leadership, Indian cricket has seen big developments since the newly-elected office-bearers took over in October 2022.
Pay parity for international cricketers was initiated, which means the match fees for women’s players are now at par with their male counterparts across formats.
Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) led the way for the formation and selling of franchises as well as media rights for the upcoming Women’s Premier League, to be held in March 2023. It has made the five-team WPL the second-most valuable women’s sports league in the world, behind only the 12-team Women’s NBA in the US.
There was also the adoption and upgradation of a new digital interface, which would help the state associations approve and recommend to the BCCI release of fees to players digitally.
Also, an inaugural U-15 girls one-day tournament has been started from this season to unearth more hidden talent and nurture them to rise through the ranks in women’s cricket. The present structure of the BCCI does give an indication that the future looks bright for the sport in the country.
The BCCI also runs all the state cricket associations in the country.
The state associations, in turn, select their representatives who in turn elect the BCCI President — currently Binny, the 1983 World Cup-winning all-rounder.
The other key post-holders are Jay Shah, Secretary; Rajeev Shukla, Vice-President; Devajit Saikia, Joint Secretary; and Ashish Shelar, Treasurer.

In 2013, when the Indian Premier League (IPL) was mired in spot-fixing allegations, the Supreme Court had intervened and put in place the Committee of Administrators (CoA), which would run day-to-day affairs of the BCCI and implement the recommendations of the Justice R.M. Lodha panel.
The CoA was led by ex-CAG Vinod Rai, along with former India women’s cricketer Diana Edulji as one of the members in the four-member panel, which would eventually become three.
It ran for 33 months before an elected panel of office-bearers with former India captain with Sourav Ganguly as President took over.
The term of every BCCI office-bearer is three years and no person can be an office-bearer for more than three terms in all.
An office-bearer who has held any post for two consecutive terms either in the state or in BCCI is not eligible to contest elections after completing a three-year cooling off period, which came in via Lodha Committee Recommendations.
The President has powers to preside in all meetings of the General Body and the Apex Council. He is also one of the three persons to sign audited annual accounts and other financial statements made by the BCCI. In his absence, all these functions are carried out by the Vice-President.
The Secretary is in charge of keeping minutes of the AGM, SGM, Apex Council and other committee meetings. He is also in charge of maintaining the records, convening all meetings and circulating the statements made by the treasurer.
The Joint Secretary has to assist the Secretary in all matters related to functioning of the BCCI.
The Treasurer has to keep account of all subscriptions and donations received and expended by the BCCI and prepare statements of all accounts. He is also in charge of placing annual balance sheets, statements of accounts by the BCCI and the annual budget too, apart from coordinating with the CEO/Treasurer to see if the funds sent to the members are being fully utilised.
In December 1928, the BCCI was formed. R.E. Grant Govan, a New Delhi-based British industrialist, was elected as its first President and Anthony de Mello as Secretary. Presently, BCCI is an autonomous body and does not receive any grants or fundings from the Centre.
As per the BCCI constitution, all powers of governance, management and decision making “shall vest” in the General Body, which shall also have the power “to collect funds and wherever necessary borrow, with or without security, for purposes of the BCCI and to raise loans with or without security and to purchase, redeem or pay off any such activity”.
The General Body also has the powers to frame, alter, amend or add to Laws of Cricket in India wherever desirable or necessary, direct and control the governing council; lend oversight and assistance to organising IPL and ensure that interests of players as well as franchises are protected.
Many politicians from multiple political parties have held different positions in the BCCI. But after Lodha Committee’s pathbreaking guidelines, which barred an incumbent minister or Member of Parliament from holding office in the BCCI or in the state associations, politicians found an alternate way to bypass it, by placing their sons, brothers on the posts.

WFI row wake-up call for sports bodies to prioritise women athletes’ safety

New Delhi: In an unprecedented move, India’s top wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and others, staged a protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on January 18, levelling serious charges of sexual harassment against him and the coaches of the federation.
The wrestlers in a letter to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) also alleged financial misappropriation and misgovernance in the WFI and claimed that the coaches and sports science staff were ‘incompetent’.
The WFI hit back and said that the protest was baseless and driven by a “hidden agenda to dislodge the current management”, which led to even sharper reactions from the wrestlers.
Eventually, the PT Usha led Indian Olympic Association and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur intervened, heard the grievances of the wrestlers and promised them full justice. Not satisfied with the assurance, the grapplers had multiple meetings with the minister, some of which were late night. This eventually led to the stepping aside of the under-fire Brij Bhushan till an oversight committee probes the allegations and submits its report.
The oversight committee led by the legendary boxer Mary Kom is currently handling the day-to-day activities of the WFI and also looking into the allegations made by the wrestlers.
Last week’s protest should definitely be a wake-up call for the other sports bodies in the country to address serious issues and prioritise the well-being and safety of Indian women athletes.
The Indian sports administrators often claim that they have a ‘robust’ system, which gives a level playing field to athletes irrespective of their gender. However, the recent development and serious allegations have burst that bubble.
No doubt, things have improved drastically for Indian athletes in the last few years. Whether it’s a male or female sportsperson, they have far better access to facilities, coaches and grounds. Even people in general have changed their mindset towards the country’s female athletes.

But the bigger question is whether these women athletes are feeling safe at practice, during trials or even competitions. Are they having a sense of security to perform at their best?
The wrestlers, who have levelled serious allegations against the WFI chief, are top sportspersons, who have brought many laurels for India. If they are not feeling safe, one can only imagine the plight of women athletes at the lower division levels where they often don’t raise their issues and even if they do, most people don’t care.
So, it’s time for the Indian government, sports ministry and other federations to address the issue and create an environment where women athletes can speak up about their difficulties and discomfort. If they receive a complaint, they must take action against the culprits.
Apart from sports, there are many sectors and industries in the country which have seen issues of sexual misconduct and the action taken there has set precedents.
If the allegations turn out to be true, then the Sports Ministry must take strong action, which will ensure justice to the athletes and allow others to raise their issues, eventually leading to a healthy Indian sporting ecosystem.

UP: Muslim man thrashed by Bajrang Dal on cow smuggling allegation dies

A 22-year-old Muslim man was killed in the Mewat district of Uttar Pradesh on January 28 after he along with two others was reportedly beaten up by right-wing Bajrang Dal workers on allegations of cow smuggling.
The deceased – Waris – was a resident of Hussainpur village in Haryana’s Mewat district. A video has emerged on Twitter where an injured, tired and scared Waris can be seen inside a car along with two other Muslim men.

However, according to Mewat police, Waris died in a ‘car accident’. His family members vehemently refute the police’s claims and allege that they had come to save the Bajrang Dal and not Waris.
Following Waris’s death, a dharna was arranged by social activists. Speaking to a local channel, one of the activists said that the police statement that Waris died in an accident is false. “It is clearly shown in the viral video how Waris and the other two men with him are being asked their names and villages in a threatening way. It is highly disturbing. We demand the administration take action against those who are responsible for his death,” said one activist.
Waris is survived by his young wife and baby girl.

3 killed, 816 injured after 5.9 magnitude earthquake jolt Iran

Tehran: At least three people were killed and 816 others injured after a 5.9 magnitude quake hit Iran’s Khoy city.
The quake hit the region at 21.44 p.m. local time on Saturday and its depth was 7 km, the state media reported.
Governor-general of West Azarbaijan province Mohammad Sadegh Motamadian said injured have been rushed to various hospitals, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.
Seventy villages were damaged in the quake, he added.

Hyderabad: The city traffic police have issued an advisory for the ongoing construction work at the Amberpet flyover on NH-163.
In a release on Sunday, the road from the Gandhi statue to Amberpet T Junction (near Sree Ramana) will be closed for 40 days from January 30 to March 10.
Citizens are requested to take alternate routes to avoid inconvenience.
District RTC buses and other heavy vehicles coming from Uppal towards 6 No. Junction should take a route via Habsiguda X Road – Tarnaka – Osmania Distance Education Road – Adikmet Flyover – Vidyanagar – Fever Hospital – Barkathpura – Tourist Hotel – Nimboliadda– Chaderghat.

Syria rejects report on chemical weapon attack in 2018

Damascus: The Syrian Foreign Ministry has slammed as “lacking credibility” a recent report by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) accusing the Syrian air force of being behind a 2018 alleged chemical attack near the capital Damascus.
In a statement, the Ministry on Saturday listed Syria’s own accusations and condemnations in response to the OPCW report, pointing at the possible role of the US in politicising and fabricating reports about incidents in Syria, Xinhua news agency reported.
“The report lacks any scientific and objective evidence, and no sane person or specialist can reach the misleading conclusions of its authors, who neglected the objective observations raised by state parties, experts, academics, and former inspectors from the organisation who are known for their experience and knowledge,” the Ministry said.
It urged the OPCW and the UN to assume their responsibilities to preserve the independence, credibility, and future of the OPCW, and not to allow the US-led Western countries to dominate its work and role, or to politicise its tasks and use it as a tool to achieve their political goals.
On Friday, the OPCW Investigation and Identification Team issued a report, claiming that “there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Syrian Arab Air Forces were the perpetrators of the chemical weapons attack on April 7, 2018, in Douma, Syria”.
It said that during the attack, at least one helicopter of the Syrian “Tiger Forces” Elite Unit dropped two yellow cylinders containing toxic chlorine gas on two apartment buildings in a civilian residential area in Douma, killing 43 named individuals and affecting dozens more.
The Syrian government has repeatedly denied previous reports that indicated an involvement of the Syrian military in the alleged attack.

Israeli PM vows to act ‘decisively, calmly’ after synagogue shooting attack

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to act after a shooting attack killed at least seven people and wounded three others on Friday in a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem.
Netanyahu, who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, said the authorities “decided on a few immediate measures” and he convened a special security cabinet meeting on Saturday evening to discuss further measures.
During the attack on Friday evening, a gunman opened fire on people near a synagogue. Israeli police said that the assailant, identified as a 21-year-old resident of East Jerusalem, was shot dead by a police officer, Xinhua news agency reported.
The attack came a day after an Israeli military raid in the West Bank resulted in the killing of nine Palestinians. After the raid, Palestinian militant organisations vowed revenge.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is scheduled to visit the West Bank and Israel later this weekend, condemned the attack on his Twitter account.
According to a statement from the White House, US President Joe Biden spoke to Netanyahu after the attack. The President “offered all appropriate means of support to the government and people of Israel over the coming days,” said the statement.

The notice issued on Saturday stated that only the actor has the control over the commercial utilization of his personality, name, voice, image, etc.
The notice also said that several mediums, platforms, product manufacturers were misappropriating his name, image, voice, caricature image, and artistic image, and AI-generated images to create confusion among the public and to entice them to buy certain products or to access the medium through which the actor’s manners were misused.
The notice said, “His charisma and nature as an actor and human being has earned him the title of ‘Superstar’ called by millions and millions of his fans across the world. The sheer proportion of his fan base and his respect across the film industry is unmatched and indisputable. Any damage to his reputation or personal life would entail a great loss to our client.”
It is to be noted that Rajinikanth is presently shooting for the big-budget movie, ‘Jailor’ in which Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is playing a cameo role.
