  • Bhaichung Bhutia participates in Bharat Jodo Yatra with Rahul

Bhaichung Bhutia participates in Bharat Jodo Yatra with Rahul

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Former captain of the Indian national football team and Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) president Bhaichung Bhutia on Sunday participated in the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Srinagar along with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra — being led by former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, would culminate on January 30 in Srinagar.

Bhutia has been pressing for restoration of seats’ reservation for the Sikkimese Nepali people in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly and implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to protect the local indigenous communities from rising influx.

The HSP in a release said Bhutia took up these demands with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi while participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

He sought Congress’ support on the ILP and seats’ restoration issue if the bill was brought in the Parliament.

He explained to the two Congress leaders that the rightful reservation of the Sikkimese Nepali community must be restored to ensure their safety and security.

“Baichung Bhutia also explained why ILP is necessary for Sikkim’s all-round development and prosperity. During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, he requested all the leaders of Congress to support any resolution/bill brought in the Parliament to solve these issues,” the HSP release stated.

Bhutia has said that Rahul Gandhi had taken note of the demands placed by him during the Yatra.

“As a constructive opposition party, HSP is doing everything to support the government to solve the issue of ILP and seat reservations. Now it is high time that the government of Sikkim acted. And the right place to act is the Sikkim State Legislative Assembly, not the rally or speech. The government must pass the bills in the Assembly on these two issues and send it to the parliament so that the bill is passed and becomes an Act or law,” said HSP spokesperson Biraj Adhikari.

Hyderabad: Airport Metro works under ‘fine-tune’

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In order to fine-tune the Airport Metro alignment and to examine different options for ideal station locations, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) MD NVS Reddy inspected a 10 km stretch between Narsingi underpass (My Home Avatar junction) to Rajendranagar hillock on Sunday.

Walking the entire length of about 10 km along with his senior engineers, he examined every aspect of the alignment and gave directions, a press note said.

He stated that the Airport Metro stations should be situated closer to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) road underpasses in order to give passengers arriving from various roads and communities where extensive development is occurring easy access.

In order to facilitate the construction of a few additional stations to serve the high-rise commercial and residential buildings under construction in the area of the corridor, Reddy also requested that the engineers design the Metro viaduct without curves and gradients at a few designated locations.

In order to ensure the success of Airport Metro from the very beginning of operations, he instructed officials that skywalks and other pedestrian amenities must be considered a crucial component of station planning.

  • Not every building should be a museum: Hyderabad Lit Fest panel

Not every building should be a museum: Hyderabad Lit Fest panel

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Every building cannot be a museum and old or heritage structures can be used for new purposes, said award winning architect Anuradha Naik. She pointed out that demolishing old structures and constructing something new takes a lot of energy (hinting that it could be perhaps be avoided with regard to heritage structures).

“Not every old building should be a museum. My question is what are we going to put in it? The oldest hospital is London is 1000 yes old. So why can’t we use old structures for new uses? Our tendency to say all old buildings should be got culture is wrong,” said Naik, while speaking at a panel discussion on ‘Reviving Heritage’ at the Hyderabad Literary Festival (HLF) here on Sunday.

Naik, who has worked on various projects including the Domakonda fort in Telangana (which recently won a UNESCO award for its restoration work), said “In most Scandinavian countries you have to reuse buildings. Osmania hospital has everything (with regard to the recent controversy about the structure, when there were calls to demolish it. The Telangana government eventually decided against it).”

Architect B. Sarath Chandra from Heritage Matters, whose team worked on the restoration of the historic British Residency building (which was inaugurated earlier this month), also said said they are now trying to “institutionalise” the maintenance of such buildings. “How does one run a museum? Can a College history department also be involved? How long will donors continue funding?,” he asked.

Chandra also said the next edition of the HLF can also be held at the British Residency itself, given its grandeur. The panel was moderated by Hyderabad based journalist Serish Nanisetti. The British Residency (1798-1804) ʼ was built after the Nizams of Hyderabad and the British East India Company signed the Treaty of Subsidiary Alliance in 1798.

  • ‘Adaniscam’ trends on Twitter, questions on deposits in LIC, SBI raised

‘Adaniscam’ trends on Twitter, questions on deposits in LIC, SBI raised

    [ad_1]

Following the outbreak of the Hindenburg report on the Adani group, on Friday, the hashtags ‘Hindenburg Report’, ‘Hindenburg Research’, and ‘Adani scam’ trended on Twitter.

Several Twitter users including members of the opposition raised questions on the union government’s role in the development.

Along with the Adani Group share pummelling on Friday, with the group losing Rs 3.37 lakh crore in aggregate market capitalisation in a single day, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), the single largest non-promoter domestic shareholder in five of the largest Adani Group companies by market capitalisation, lost Rs 16,627 crore due to a drop in the value of its Adani Group holdings.

The value of LIC’s Adani Group assets fell from Rs 72,193 crore on Tuesday to Rs 55,565 crore on Friday, a 22% drop in only two days.

Meanwhile, LIC’s share price declined 3.5 percent during the day on Friday, falling 5.3 percent in the prior two days.

By the time of publishing this story, #Adaniscam garnered 10.4k tweets and #HindenburgResearch garnered 4764 tweets.

    Reactions

Some of India’s top public sector banks stated their exposure to the Adani Group was within the limitations outlined by the Reserve Bank of India despite Friday’s steep decline in shares of group firms and the lenders that have exposure to it. The RBI permits a bank to expose no more than 25 percent of its eligible available capital base to any one group of related entities.

“There is nothing alarming about our Adani exposure and we don’t have any concerns as of now,” SBI chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said speaking to Reuters.

Khara said the Adani Group hadn’t raised any funding from SBI in the recent past and that the bank would take a ‘prudent call’ on any funding request from them in the near future, reported Reuters.

SBI has reached out to the company for clarification and the board will take any decision on the bank’s exposure to the group only after that, reported Reuters quoting an unnamed official.

An official at the state-run Bank of India said the loans to the Adani group were within permissible limits.

“Our exposure to the Adani Group is below the large exposure framework of the Reserve Bank of India,” Reuters quoted an unnamed executive at the Bank of India as saying.

“Till last month, the Adani Group’s interest payment on loans has been intact.”

Bank executives at two other private lenders said that they were not yet in “panic mode” but being watchful, the report stated.

The LIC is still investing additional money in Adani’s flagship unit despite the fraud allegations. According to a document, the state-controlled life insurer is investing around $37 million as an anchor investor in Adani Enterprises Ltd.’s $2.5 billion new share sale. It would increase its present ownership of 4.23% with the investment.

Adani Power Ltd., Adani Green Energy Ltd., Adani Transmission Ltd., Adani Ports, and Special Economic Zone Ltd., and Adani Enterprises Ltd. make up the Adani Group.

    What is the Hindenburg report?

Hindenburg Research, a well-known short seller in the United States, disclosed short positions in the Adani Group on Wednesday, accusing the conglomerate of the improperly wide use of businesses established in offshore tax havens and expressing worry about excessive debt levels.

The revelation, which came just days before Adani Enterprises’ (ADEL.NS) $2.5 billion share sale, sent Adani group businesses’ shares tumbling.

It also said that seven Adani listed firms had an 85% downside on a fundamental basis because to what it dubbed ‘sky-high valuations’.

The firm published an investigative document titled ‘Adani Group: How The World’s 3rd Richest Man Is Pulling The Largest Con In Corporate History‘ and revealed findings of their two-year investigation presenting evidence that the Rs 17.8 trillion worth Adani group has engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

According to the report, Gautam Adani, the Adani Group’s founder, and chairman, has a net worth of about $120 billion, which he has increased by more than $100 billion in the last three years, primarily as a result of stock price growth in the group’s seven most important publicly traded companies, which have increased by an average of 819 percent during that time.

KT Rama Rao had also challenged the central investigative agencies including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Income Tax Department (IT) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to probe into the Adani enterprise’s ‘scam’.

The challenge comes hours after US’s Hindenburg Research’s investigative document, alleging fraud in Adani Group’s dealings, surfaced.

The Adani Group has said that accounting (or fraud-type assertions) “investigation” by Hindenburg Research are devoid of facts.

Of Adani’s portfolio’s nine publicly listed entities, eight are audited by one of the Big 6.

On leverage or over-leverage issue — 100 of our various companies are rated (these account for nearly 100 percent of our EBITDA), Adani Enterprises said in a stock exchange filing.

On revenue or balance sheet being artificially inflated or managed — out of nine listed companies in Adani portfolio six are subject to specific sector regulatory review for revenue, costs, and capex, Adani Group said.

In relation to governance, four of our large companies are in the top 7 percent of the peer group in Emerging markets or the sector of the world.

On the LAS position do note that overall promoter leverage is less than 4 percent of promoter holding, the group said.

Hindenburg asked 89 questions in total, the following Question by number: 1,2,3 5,6,7 19,20,21, 27,28,29 62,63,64 and 72,74,75,77,78,79 are in relation to Related party transactions, DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) and court cases.

Twenty-one in total cannot be claimed to be the result of any investigation over a two-year period or any such assertion as they were disclosed in the public documents all the way back from 2015 onwards, the group said.

The 21 questions are nothing but Adani Portfolio’s own public disclosure from as far back as 2015, the statement said.

  • Documentary row: Hindu Sena puts up anti-BBC placards outside organisation’s Delhi office

Documentary row: Hindu Sena puts up anti-BBC placards outside organisation’s Delhi office

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Hindu Sena on Sunday allegedly put up anti-BBC placards outside the UK-headquartered broadcaster’s office on Kasturba Gandhi Marg here over its documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Placards reading “BBC is a threat to India’s Unity and it should be Banned” and “BBC stop tarnishing India’s image. BBC leave India” were put up outside the main gate of the BBC office amid a row over the controversial documentary.

The placards were removed by the police.

Hindu Sena members also accused the media organisation of conspiring to tarnish and malign the image of both India and Prime Minister Modi.

The BBC is a threat to the unity and integrity of the nation and the channel should be banned in India immediately, Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta said.

He recalled that the BBC was banned in India during the tenure of Indira Gandhi as prime minister. The ban was lifted after the organisation submitted an apology, Gupta claimed.

When asked, a senior police officer said, “Our patrolling team, which was present nearby, spotted the placards outside the BBC office and removed those.

“Some of them (Hindu Sena members) were still trying to display the placards elsewhere but they could not due to police presence and fled.”

Legal action has not been initiated as no complaint was received, he said.

Students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia held protests here during the past week after the varsity authorities refused to allow screening of the documentary.

The government had last week directed Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question”. The Union Ministry of External Affairs has called the documentary a “propaganda piece” lacking objectivity and reflecting a colonial mindset.

However, opposition parties have slammed the government’s move to block access to the documentary.
