Hyderabad: BC welfare association seeks Rs 2L crore from Union Budget

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: National BC Welfare Association’s president and MP R Krishnaiah requested a hike of Rs 2 lakh crore for the welfare of backward classes from the forthcoming ‘Union budget’.

The MP had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointing out that the Union government provided 27 percent reservations to BCs in educational institutions run by the Centre since 2006 while they constitute 56 percent of the country’s population.

“If the BC population of 75 crore is not developed, how is it possible for the country to assume superpower status?” Krishnaiah asked in his letter.

He further pointed out that the allocations made for BCs in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and other states were less than required.

Krishnaiah also demanded that pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes should be introduced for BCs along the lines of SCs and STs.

He further sought funds for the construction of hostels and residential schools run by state governments.

He said that 80 percent subsidy loans have to be sanctioned to BC candidates through National BC Corporation and all schemes provided to SCs and STs at the national level should be extended to OBCs as well.

All-party meet ahead of Budget Session: Oppn raises Adani issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The government on Monday said it was willing to discuss every issue under rules during the Budget Session of Parliament and sought the support of the Opposition in running the proceedings smoothly.

Briefing the media after an all-party meeting convened by the government ahead of the Budget Session beginning Tuesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government was willing to discuss every issue in Parliament under rules. “We seek Opposition’s cooperation” in running the House smoothly.

At the meet, Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh, RJD’s Manoj Jha, DMK, Left parties and others raised the Adani issue and sought discussion on it in Parliament during the session.

The US-based short seller Hindenburg Research has accused the Adani Group of wrongdoing like stock manipulation. The company has dismissed the allegations as “nothing but a lie”.

The YSR Congress demanded a nationwide caste-based economic census at the meet.

It is necessary to know the economic status of backward castes who are “lagging behind” on social and development indicators, the party said.

YSR Congress leader Vijaysai Reddy said backward castes are over 50 per cent of the total population and the census will help find their economic status.

The ruling party in Andhra Pradesh has joined the likes of the JD(U) and the RJD, both of which have demanded a caste census.

The grand alliance government in Bihar has rolled out a state-wide caste survey.

Reddy said his party also demanded the passage of the women quota bill for ensuring reservation for them in Parliament.

Parties including the TRS, TMC and the BJD also supported the demand.

The Budget Session will begin from January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The session will have 27 sittings and will continue till April 6 with a month-long recess to examine the budget papers.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1.

The first part of the Budget Session will conclude on February 14.

Parliament will reconvene on March 12 for the second part of the Budget Session.

  • Indian-origin man in UK convicted of killing father with champagne bottle in 2021

Indian-origin man in UK convicted of killing father with champagne bottle in 2021

    [ad_1]

London: An Indian-origin man was found guilty of killing his 86-year-old father with a bottle of champagne in an inebriated state in north London in 2021.

Deekan Paul Singh Vig, 54, was convicted following a trial at the Old Bailey court in the city last week and will be sentenced on February 10.

The Metropolitan Police said his father, Arjan Singh Vig, also lived in the same house in Southgate, north London, when police were called to a disturbance in October 2021.

“Despite the efforts of emergency services Arjan was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Met Police said.

“A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head,” the police said.

The trial heard how officers found the victim’s body on the floor of his son’s bedroom with his “head caved in”.

According to the Evening Standard’, his son was naked and surrounded by about 100 bottles of Champagne, including blood-stained bottles of Veuve Clicquot and Bollinger.

“I killed my dad. I hit him over the head with a f***ing bloody bottle of Bollinger champagne,” he reportedly said.

Jurors heard how Deekan had lived with his accountant father and zoologist mother Damanjit Vig, 85, in their four-bedroom home for about 40 years.

The family had moved from Uganda to the UK when Deekan was five-year-old, at the time Idi Amin expelled members of the South Asian community from the east African country.

The court was told that Deekan had developed a taste for alcohol during the COVID-19 lockdown and admitted to drinking 500ml of whisky earlier on the evening of the incident.

At the crime scene, police uncovered 100 bottles of champagne, 10 Amazon delivery boxes of whisky bottles, and an empty bottle of Talisker Scotch on the bed.

Deekan had denied murder but admitted manslaughter on the second day of his trial on the basis that he did not intend to cause his father really serious harm.

However, according to the court report, the jury deliberated for less than a day to find him guilty of murder last Friday.

Sensex, Nifty close higher in volatile trade as IT, oil shares recover

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Benchmark BSE Sensex and Nifty closed higher in a highly volatile trade on Monday, riding on the back of a recovery in IT, oil and financial stocks after a two-day fall even as investors remained cautious ahead of the Union budget and policy announcement by the US Federal Reserve.

The 30-share Sensex recovered 169.51 points or 0.29 percent to settle at 59,500.41 as 17 of its constituents ended in the green. During the day, it rose by 313.34 points or 0.52 percent to 59,644.24.

The broader NSE Nifty gained 44.60 points or 0.25 percent to end at 17,648.95 as 29 of its stocks advanced. The index moved in a range of 17,709.15 to 17,405.55 during the day.

Now the focus of the market will be on Budget and Fed policy,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

“Volatility continued to be the order of the day, as benchmark Sensex gyrated nearly 1000 points intra-day before staging a smart comeback in late trades on selective buying. European markets were trading lower during mid-session deals. Markets in the US had ended higher on Friday.

International oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.25 percent to USD 86.44 per barrel.

  • India Inc bosses to get 9.1% pay hike, average CEO compensation now Rs 8.4 cr

India Inc bosses to get 9.1% pay hike, average CEO compensation now Rs 8.4 cr

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid widespread layoffs, top Indian CEOs and senior executives are set for an average 9.1 percent salary hike in 2023 and average CEO compensation has gone up 21 percent over the past four years to Rs 8.4 crore now, a study showed on Monday.

The study found that among the Bombay Stock Exchange’s (BSE) top 30 companies, long-term incentive (LTI) is provided at 176 percent of fixed pay for CEOs and at 103 percent for other c-level executives, including the chief operating officer, chief financial officer, sales leader and chief human resources officer.

The average LTI amount for CEOs for the same set of organizations is Rs 10 crore, according to the study by Aon, a leading global professional services firm that analysed data across 519 companies from more than 25 industries.

Within Pay at Risk — the sum of variable pay and long-term incentives (LTI) for total compensation — the component of LTI has increased to 40 percent of the total compensation as of now, up from 26 percent in 2015-16.

“In a rapidly evolving, volatile business environment, organizations seek to adopt executive pay programmes that drive the right behaviours, are cost effective and contribute to long-term business results,” said Nitin Sethi, CEO, Human Capital Solutions, India and South Asia at Aon.

For the Board and senior managerial positions, one in three organizations are focusing on improving diversity levels.

As part of an accelerated effort, boards are embedding environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, diversity and succession metrics in the long-term and short-term goals for CEOs and executive leaders, the study noted.

Compensation, and its related governance, continues to be an important issue for employers as they strive to build and maintain a resilient workforce.

“With rising shareholder activism, pay governance has become a key focus area for India Inc. As a result, organizations are updating their ‘Malus clauses’ that are additional checks before vesting of long-term executive incentives — particularly in cases of material financial restatement,” said Pritish Gandhi, director and practice leader of the Executive Compensation and Governance Practice in India at Aon.

Malus clauses allow a company to reduce or cancel a senior executive’s bonus or share award before it has been paid out.

“At the same time, clawback clauses which allow organisations to retrieve past pay-outs under exigent circumstances of fraud and misconduct are also being applied for a duration of three to five years, as organisations design their 2023 executive compensation programmes,” Gandhi elaborated.

  • Hyderabad: HLF panel sheds light on sexism in Indian scientific research

Hyderabad: HLF panel sheds light on sexism in Indian scientific research

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The second day of the Hyderabad Literary Festival (HLF) conducted a panel on Women in Science moderated by veterinary scientist Dr Sagari Ramdas which invoked the sexism present in the scientific community in the country.

The panel hosted two scientists: Nasreen Ehtesham from the National Institute of Pathology and Immunologist Dr Vineeta Bal. Kickstarting the panel discussion, Dr Ramdas shed light on how only 14% of women are present in STEM research in India and the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISs) and Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) have only 12.72% of women. She further pointed out that the presence of Dalit, Bahujan and Adivasi women in scientific research is negligible owing to a wide range of divisive factors.

Dr Bal invoked the sexism present at the 108th Indian Science Congress (ISC) which was hostel by Nagpur University in the first week if January 2023. She mentioned kukum-haldi being offered to the delegates and stated that “the presence of patriarchal symbols was just another example of sexism wherein women scientists weren’t treated on par with men.”

The conference had hosted the presence of Prime Minister Narender Modi and saw controversial speeches made by Women’s Science Congress convenor Kalpana Pande and Union minister Nithin Gadkari’s wife Kanchan Gadkari.

Last year, Delhi High Court judge Pratiba M Singh had stated that Manusmrithi grants “very respectable position” to women at a panel titled “Facing the unseen barriers: Addressing challenges faced by Women in Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship and Mathematics (STEM).”

Dr Bal and Dr Ehtesham spoke about how lack of access to bathrooms, improper maternity leave and other institutional hindrances added to the lack of women in scientific research.

When asked about the current challenges younger women of science face, Dr Bal remarked that with the decline in a joint family system, women are compelled to stay at home to take of children as there isn’t enough familial or institutional assistance.

Further, when asked about the impact of #Metoo, the panelists mentioned that while we have come a long way, scientific community is still plagued with several cases of sexual harassment and aside from the setting up of an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), most scientific institutions are unable to do much.
