Telangana: KTR inaugurates ITC’s food processing unit worth Rs 450 cr

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: IT and Industries minister KT Rama Rao inaugurated the ITC limited’s food processing facility, which entailed an initial investment of Rs 450 crore in Medak.

KTR has invited the multi-business Indian enterprise to open integrated food manufacturing and logistics facility in Telangana’s food processing zone apart from a manufacturing hub.

The food processing facility, spread over nearly 59 acres of land and with a built-up area of 6.5 lakh square feet, entails an initial investment outlay of Rs 450 crore.

Speaking at the inaugural event held in Medak on Monday, KTR said, “Telangana was preparing itself to set up special food processing zones at 10k acres to extend its support to the ITC if they came forward to expand its facility.”

Remarking that Telangana couldn’t be a better location logistically for the set-up, as it is situated in the middle of the country, KTR assured customized incentives to ITC in reviewing the Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT) in Mulugu district while inviting the company chairman and MD Sanjiv Puri to explore the possibilities of ITC’s manufacturing hub in the state.

He further insisted the ITC’s chairman join hands and participate in CSR activities (Corporate Social Responsibility) for the betterment of existing health and education infrastructure in the locality.

Stressing on the extension of ITC’s support to local farmers, KTR requested ITC to use local raw materials, especially potatoes used in the manufacture of their ‘Bingo’ chips.

“This would ensure the quality of raw materials reaches ITC through agricultural scientists and Rythu Bandhu Samithis,” the minister added.

The new facility will be producing ITC’s food brands including Aashirvaad atta, Sunfeast biscuits, Bingo chips, and Yippee Noodles among others.

Asif Ali Zardari sends Rs 10 bn legal notice to Imran Khan

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Former President and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Monday sent a Pak Rs 10 billion legal notice to former premier and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, local media reported.

In the notice, sent by Naek and Associates acting on behalf of their client Asif Ali Zardari, it was stated that Imran Khan in a public address which was widely-reported across the world had accused Zardari of “false, fabricated and scandalous remarks/statements as well as leveled baseless allegations of serious nature” that he had paid his corruption money to a terrorist organisation being supported by powerful state agency facilitators to launch another fatal attack on Khan, Samaa TV reported.

The notice read that the “baseless accusations” were of “malicious and defamatory nature” that tried to defame Zardari nationally as well as internationally, the report said.

“Through your defamatory, libelous and scandalous remarks and allegations of serious nature, you have tried to create a link between our client and terrorist organisations blindly disregarding the fact that our client and his party has remained the victim of terrorism,” the notice read.

Further, it said that Zardari’s wife and former Prime Minister late Benazir Bhutto was also assassinated by terrorists, Samaa TV reported.

“In your statements, you have stated that our client, through corruption money, is hatching a fresh plan to allegedly assassinate you despite the fact that our client has languished in prison for almost eight years in false, fabricated, trumped up and concocted cases, including corruption cases, and not one of which was proved against him and he was acquitted in all those cases honourably.”

The notice termed Khan’s statements as “made with malafide intentions and ulterior motives to injure, harm, defame and disparage the reputation and name of our client who has made sacrifices for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan”.

  • Hindenburg Research’s expose: Adani Group to go forward with planned IPO

Hindenburg Research’s expose: Adani Group to go forward with planned IPO

    [ad_1]

As the Adani Group tries to grapple with the Hindenburg Research report that accused them of financial fraud, mounting debts and offshore tax havens, the former has announced that it will go forward with the planned initial public offering (IPO) as scheduled.

In a statement, Adani Group said, “There is no change in either the schedule or the issue price. All our stakeholders including bankers and investors have full faith in the FPO (Follow on Public Offer). We are extremely confident about the success of the FPO.”

However, bankers have expressed serious concerns, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Saturday.

“Everyone was shocked. They did not expect such a poor response,” one source said. They plan to either extend the subscription closing date by four days or lower the price.

    The Hindenburg Research expose

On January 26, Hindenburg Research’s report called out the conglomerate’s “substantial debt”, which includes pledging shares for loans; that Adani’s elder brother Vinod “manages a vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities” that move billions into group companies without required disclosure; and that its auditor “hardly seems capable of complex audit work”.

Hindenburg Research believed India was a vibrant democracy and an emerging superpower with an exciting future and it was the Adani Group which was holding it back through “systematic loot”.

Soon after the expose, Adani’s share fell down by 20% and then 11% below the minimum offer price of the secondary sale. Adani himself lost in excess of USD 20 billion, or about one-fifth of his total fortune.

It lost Rs 3.37 lakh crore in aggregate market capitalisation in a single day. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), the single largest non-promoter domestic shareholder in five of the largest Adani Group companies by market capitalisation, lost Rs 16,627 crore due to a drop in the value of its Adani Group holdings.

The value of LIC’s Adani Group assets fell from Rs 72,193 crore on Tuesday to Rs 55,565 crore on Friday, a 22% drop in only two days.

Meanwhile, LIC’s share price declined 3.5% during the day on Friday, falling 5.3% in the prior two days.

On January 29, the Adani Group responded to the allegations and narrative peddled by Hindenburg Research in a 400-page response.

The group alleged that the report was not an attack on any specific company but a “calculated attack” on India, its growth story, and ambitions.

Replying to the claim, Hindenburg Research tweeted, ‘Fraud Cannot Be Obfuscated By Nationalism Or A Bloated Response That Ignores Every Key Allegation We Raised’.

It welcomed Adani Group’s decision to take legal action but stated that they file a suit in the United States where they operate. However, if Adani fails to move forward with legal proceedings, then they stand corrected.

In a statement, Hindenburg Research said, “In the 36 hours since we released the report, Adani hasn’t addressed a single substantive issue we raised. At the conclusion of our report, we asked 88 straightforward questions that we believe give the company a chance to be transparent. Thus far, Adani has answered none of these questions,” the statement read.

“If Adani is serious, it should also file suit in the U.S where we operate. We have a long list of documents we would demand in a legal discovery process,” the statement concluded.

  • Telangana seeks funds in Union Budget for Railway projects

Telangana seeks funds in Union Budget for Railway projects

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has urged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to ensure adequate budgetary allocations to state railway projects in the Union Budget.

In a letter to the Union Minister, state Industries and Commerce Minister K.T. Rama Rao highlighted severe discrimination being meted out to Telangana in budget allocation to various Railway projects.

KTR, as the state minister is popularly known, stated that the Union government has been ignoring repeated pleas from the state government to sanction funds for several important ongoing and proposed projects in the state. “The discrimination in the railway sector is more blatant and visible and the state has been getting a raw deal in every budget presented by the NDA government,” he wrote.

He pointed out that the 13th Schedule of AP State Reorganisation Act clearly states that the Indian Railways shall, within six months from the appointed day, examine the feasibility of establishing a Rail Coach Factory in the successor State of Telangana and improve rail connectivity in the state and take an expeditious decision thereon.

However, despite repeated appeals from the State government, the Union government has neither initiated any measure to establish a Rail Coach Factory in Kazipet nor granted any new major infrastructure project to improve rail connectivity in the state.

KTR wrote that Telangana contributes substantially to the revenues of South Central Railway (both freight and passenger). “The state is a crucial link between North and South India and is home to the most important Railway junctions – Secunderabad & Kazipet – in our country. Being a landlocked state, Telangana is heavily dependent on Railway infrastructure for transportation of goods and passengers. Addition of new Railway infrastructure will be a big boost to the state’s growth story. But the Union government is found wanting when it comes to extending necessary assistance to develop new transport infrastructure in Telangana,” he said.

The minister said that it is appalling to note that in the past eight years, just a little over 100 km of railway track has been laid in Telangana. The state has a paltry 3 per cent of the total railway lines in the country out of which about 57 per cent are single lane. “This lack of critical infra is depriving Telangana of any new trains. It is disheartening to note that in the past eight years, South Central Railway has launched only one new train from the capital city – Lingampally-Vijayawada Intercity Express.”

KTR pointed out that the current NDA Government has not grounded a single new Railway line in Telangana in the past eight years. Even the progress of joint venture railway projects taken up with the state government is also painfully slow.

The Union Minister was told that while the Union government spent just Rs 1,100 crore on ongoing Railway projects in the state, the state government has spent Rs 1,904 crore as its share. Several projects, which were cleared by earlier governments were shelved by the current Union government. Many other projects for which survey reports are submitted long back have also not moved an inch.

KTR mentioned high priority project proposals submitted years ago to the Railway Board and demanded that they be sanctioned.

He said that earlier, the South Central Railways used to convene a meeting of all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from the region and accept proposals for new Railway projects and trains. Strangely, even that convention has been done away with this year, he added.

  • Former India captain Anjum Chopra showers praise on the U19 Women’s team

Former India captain Anjum Chopra showers praise on the U19 Women’s team

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former India captain Anjum Chopra showered praise on the U19 Women’s team who won the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, saying the country’s name being written in golden letters for winning the first-ever edition of the competition is a big deal.

“Firstly, winning the World Cup is a big deal and then the Under-19 women’s winning the inaugural World Cup by which the name of India will be written on it in golden letters is a big deal. By the way, the women’s cricket team has played the semi-finals of the World Cup many times and also played the finals many times but never won the trophy.”

“So, I understand it is a very different feeling and now it looks like we wish we were little kids and once again get a chance to play that’s how I feel. I am so excited that there is no limit to happiness, and it looks like I’ve won the World Cup and great! It’s a golden opportunity for all the cricketers for the bright future ahead of them,” said Anjum to former India men’s player Aakash Chopra on JioCinema’s new daily show ‘Aakashvani’.

At the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Sunday, Shafali Verma & Co produced a superb bowling performance coupled with some outstanding fielding to bowl out England for just 68.

Fast bowler Titas Sadhu, off-spinner Archana Devi and leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra were accurate in their line, length and found enough help to pick two wickets each. Shafali, left-arm spinners Mannat Kashyap and Sonam Yadav took a scalp each in a dominating bowling performance.

The fielding, despite a few blips, was athletic with some exceptional catches taken by Archana and Gongadi Trisha as England never got going with the bat. In chasing 69, on a slow pitch aiding the spinners, India lost Shafali and Shweta Sehrawat in the first four overs.

But Soumya Tiwari (24 not out) and Gongadi Trisha (24) shared a vital 46-run stand for the third wicket to complete the chase in 14 overs and give India their first-ever World Cup title in women’s cricket.

Anjum further pointed out that opener Shweta Sehrawat, who was the tournament’s top-run getter with 297 runs, along with leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra, who picked 11 wickets, the second-most by a bowler in the competition and off-spinner Archana Devi will be the future superstars from the victorious Indian U19 team.

“Shweta Sehrawat is my highest and the top-ranked player in this Indian team. She is the one who has stood out and given stand-out performances in this World Cup. She nearly missed the Player of the series. In fact, she is the highest run-getter in this entire world cup and she has won three matches and also won the player of the match. So, by adding all these things, I think Shweta Sehrawat for me will be the number one pick.”

“Then Parshavi Chopra is a leg spinner, again very well done by her by giving the limited performances and the way she bowled. So, she will be my second pick and Archana Devi, a young budding off-spinner who also bats well. So, according to me these three players Archana Devi, Parshavi Chopra and right on top Shweta Sehrawat have been outstanding performers in this tournament.”

  • SC to hear pleas challenging laws regulating conversions due to interfaith marriages

SC to hear pleas challenging laws regulating conversions due to interfaith marriages

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said it would hear on February 3 a batch of pleas challenging controversial state laws regulating religious conversions due to interfaith marriages.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala noted that a transfer plea was mentioned in the morning.

“We can list it, issue notice and hear it together. The transfer petition will also be numbered by then. The attorney general can also examine. We will hear all on Friday,” the bench said.

During the brief hearing, senior advocate CU Singh, appearing in the court on behalf of NGO “Citizens for Justice and Peace” of activist Teesta Setalwad, submitted that people cannot get married due to these state laws and the situation is very grave.

Attorney General R Venkataramani submitted that these are state legislations that have been challenged before the apex court and the high courts concerned should hear the cases.

The top court had earlier asked the parties challenging the anti-conversion laws of several states to file a common petition seeking a transfer of the cases on the issue from various high courts to the apex court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had challenged the locus standi of “Citizens for Justice and Peace”, which is one of the petitioners. Mehta had not elaborated on the reasons for questioning the NGO’s locus.

The bench had noted that there were at least five such pleas “before the Allahabad High Court, seven before the Madhya Pradesh High Court, two each before the Gujarat and Jharkhand high courts, three before the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and one each before the Karnataka and Uttarakhand high courts”, and said a common petition for their transfer can be filed.

Besides, two separate petitions have been filed by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, challenging the interim orders of the respective high courts that stayed certain provisions of the state laws on conversion.

Earlier, a bench headed by Justice M R Shah had said religious conversion is a serious issue that should not be given a political colour.

It had sought the attorney general’s assistance on the plea filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.

Another bench headed by the CJI had, on January 2, sought to know the status of the cases pending before different high courts challenging controversial state laws regulating religious conversion due to interfaith marriages and said if the cases are similar in nature, it may transfer those to itself.

It had asked “Citizens for Justice and Peace” and the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to apprise it of the status of the cases challenging the state laws on conversion through marriage.

The apex court had, on January 6, 2021, agreed to examine certain new and controversial laws of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, regulating religious conversions due to interfaith marriages.

The Uttar Pradesh law relates to not only interfaith marriages but all religious conversions and lays down elaborate procedures for anyone who wishes to convert to another religion.

The Uttarakhand law entails a two-year jail term for those found guilty of religious conversion through “force or allurement”. The allurement can be in the form of cash, employment or material benefits.

The plea filed by the NGO has alleged that the legislations violate articles 21 and 25 of the Constitution as those empower the State to suppress an individual’s personal liberty and freedom to practise the religion of his choice.

Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind has also moved the Supreme Court, challenging the anti-conversion laws of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. It has contended that these laws have been enacted to “harass” interfaith couples and implicate them in criminal cases.

The Muslim body, in its PIL filed through advocate Ejaz Maqbool, has said the provisions of all such laws of the five states force people to disclose their faith and consequently, invade their privacy.

  • Surprised over morcha against ‘love jihad’: Shiv Sena

Surprised over morcha against ‘love jihad’: Shiv Sena

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Monday took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party over right-wing groups taking out a march against “love-jihad” and questioned the need for such a protest when the “so-called Hindutvavadi government” is in power at the Centre and Maharashtra.

In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana, the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena said BJP plays its “trump card” whenever it feels jolts of defeat. Now they have begun the game of playing the Hindu-Muslim card, it said.

Activists of right-wing organisations on Sunday took out a ‘Hindu Jan Akrosh Morcha’ in Mumbai against ‘love jihad’ and demanded anti-conversion laws and a crackdown on land grabbing in the name of religion. Leaders and workers of outfits including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Dal, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) marched in the rally.

The rally, organised by Sakal Hindu Samaj, began from Shivaji Park in Dadar — where Shiv Sena Bhavan, the headquarters of the UBT faction of the party, is located.

“There is a so-called fierce Hindutvavadi government in the state as well at the Centre. Then how come your (the ones who took out the rally) Hindutva is in danger?

“With Modi-Shah at the Centre, there is a Ramrajya and this state is a heaven for Hindus this is what their (supporters of the BJP) people say. So it is surprising that there was still the ‘Aakrosh’ morcha (rally),” it said.

The Saamana further said taking out such a march would have been logical had the Muslim League been (ruling) the Centre and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) government in Maharashtra.

“If there is a question of love-jihad or forced conversion then there should be a strong law. But whenever elections are around the corner there is a talk of ‘Hindutva being in danger’ in BJP-ruled states,” it said.

If the ‘Aakrosh’ morcha was just for elections, then it is dishonesty towards Hindutva, it said.

It also took a dig at the BJP-led Centre, saying conferring Padma Vibhushan on “Maulana” Mulayam Singh, the late Samajwadi Party patriarch, is an “insult to sacrifices of thousands of karsevaks of the Ram Mandir movement”.
