  • Telangana has almost zero farmer suicide, claims BRS’ Palla Rajeshwar

Telangana has almost zero farmer suicide, claims BRS’ Palla Rajeshwar

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Rythu Bandhu Samithi president and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Palla Rajeshwar Reddy claimed that farmer suicides in the state are almost zero.

Reddy was addressing a press conference along with government whip G Balaraju and MLCs M S Prabhakar Rao and V Gangadhar Goud on Monday.

Praising chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s pro-farmer welfare schemes, Reddy shot down allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Bandi Sanjay who claimed that nearly 10,000 farmers in the state have died by suicide.

On January 27, Bandi Sanjay visited the family of deceased farmer Ramulu at Adloor Yellareddy village in Kamareddy and accused the KCR government of land grabbing.

“Ramulu along with his brother has only 2 acres of land. He has 2 children, one studying in Class 5 and the other in Class 10. The 15-year-old elder boy also works in a bakery nearby. It is sad that the only 2 acres of land he owns have gone into the industrial zone. He fought for it for around 20 days but no one responded. The people and the farmers staged protests. But no one responded and it is unfortunate that Ramulu had to die for it,” Bandi Sanjay said.

Claiming that Bandi Sanjay’s claims are baseless, Palla Rajeshwar Reddy said that BRS has full proof of zero farmer suicides.

“Bandi Sanjay is talking about the increase in suicide whereas, on the other hand, the Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar had told the Parliament that there has been a 400 percent decrease in Telangana ever since its formation in 2014,” Reddy said.

Reddy further said that over 91 percent farmer population have benefitted from the Rythu Bandhu scheme. “This includes small and marginal farmers. Those having 50 acres or more comprised only 0.09%. Also, 81% of farmers belong to the scheduled caste, scheduled tribes and backward classes. Allegations made by the Opposition parties are all baseless and politically motivated,” Reddy concluded.

  • US plans to end COVID emergency declarations in May

US plans to end COVID emergency declarations in May

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles: The Biden administration has announced it plans to end the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) on May 11.

The COVID-19 national emergency and PHE were declared by the Trump Administration in 2020. They are currently set to expire on March 1 and April 11, respectively.

The Biden Administration’s plan is to extend the emergency declarations to May 11, and then end both emergencies on that date, according to a statement of the White House, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The statement came in opposing two House bills that would end the emergency declarations sooner.

The public health and national emergencies have enabled US hospitals to respond more flexibly when faced with patients spikes during COVID-19 surges.

Ending the emergency declaration could have implications for funding for tests and vaccines as well as impact other pandemic-related policies, the National Public Radio (NPR) reported.

  • How BJP MLA Raja Singh is bypassing his gag order on hate speech

How BJP MLA Raja Singh is bypassing his gag order on hate speech

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hit with a gag order from the Telangana High Court, suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA T Raja Singh seems to be subverting his restrictions by passing communal and inflammatory remarks from outside the state. The legislator is currently out on bail after he was arrested for his derogatory remarks in Prophet Muhammad last year, which led to several protests.

The High Court had ordered Raja Singh while quashing his detention in jail under the PD Act last year. As part of its bail order, the BJP MLA was told not to make provocative speeches or speak in public. So far, a case has already been registered against him in recent times for violating the court orders (with theMangalhat police station). He was served another notice by the Hyderabad police on January 29 for a hate speech in Mumbai.

His statements come just months ahead of the Telangana state elections, which are due this year. With restrictions on him, Raja Singh is currently unable to carry out political campaigns or hold public rallies as he would have ideally done in the run up to the polls. It is unsure how the state judiciary will react to him making speeches outside, with the logic that it is beyond the HC’s jurisdiction.

The suspended MLA represents the Goshamahal constituency under the GHMC area in Hyderabad.

When asked if the party will lift Raja Singh’s suspension, BJP leaders from Telangana remained tight lipped and said that the decision is for the central leadership to make. “He is popular among some people and they want his suspension to go, so we have to wait and see,” said one leader.

After his Mumbai speech, it is to be seen what Raja Singh does next or if he legally challenges his current inability to speak in public in Hyderabad and Telangana.

Raja Singh’s hate speech came at a rally in Mumbai at a programme organised by the Sakal Hindu Samaj, a conglomerate of Hindutva organisations under the banner of the Hindu Jan Aakrosh Morcha. It commenced from Shivaji Park in Dadar and ended at Kamgar Maidan in Parel.

The Sakal Hindu Samaj is an organization comprising of various groups like Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Sanatan Sanstha. As of now, the MLA has not made any plans public, neither is the Telangana unit of the BJP saying anything on the issue.

However, one can expect some fireworks from his side in the upcoming state polls.

During his speech in the public meeting held at T Kamgar Maidan, Raja Singh used repeated his typical aggressive rant and provocative language. This time around his comments were about the inter-faith love affairs. “The chingari (spark) that is lit here will turn into a jwalamukhi (volcano) if love and land Jihad is not stopped. Be aware about ‘love jihad’ and (religious) conversions,” he said while addressing the gathering.

The MLA targeted Muslims and demanded for a financial boycott, “Do not buy goods with ‘halal’ tags on them. Even in Ola, Uber and Rapido check if the driver is a Muslim or a tilakdhari. Doesn’t matter if the commodity is of Rs 1 or Rs. 1 lakh, buy it from a Hindu. If the word halal is mentioned in any product, it should not be purchased,” he said demanding that even Ramdev baba remove the word from the products he sells.

“Why should we have rules that are meant for Islamic countries,” he questioned. He spoke in praise of Shivaji Maharaj, his son Sambhaji and the late Shiv Sena head Bal Thackeray.

The suspended BJP MLA was detained under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act by the Hyderabad police last year. After spending nearly three months in the Central Prison, Cherlapally, he was released after the High Court quashed his detention orders.

Cases were registered against Raja Singh for passing derogatory statements against Prophet Muhammad that brought the city on the verge of a communal riot last year. Raja Singh had released a video with his objectionable remarks after the state government allowed comedian Munawar Faruqui, who had joked about Hindu gods earlier, to hold a show in the city.

The BJP MLA’s video led to several protests for over two days, after which the Hyderabad police put him inside prison. Senior police officials said that they are keeping tabs on him after his release as well.

BRS boycotting Prez’s address disrespectful to Dalit, Adivasi women: Telangana BJP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday called Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s (BRS) call to boycott President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the Parliament as being disrespectful to Dalit, Adivasi women.

“BRS couldn’t digest the fact that an Adivasi woman became the President of India. If BRS had issues with the speech, the party could have raised them when they get the chance to speak but need not boycott. They should immediately issue an apology,” Sanjay said.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) decided to boycott the Presidential address on Tuesday to highlight the failure of the Union Government, while Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge and several Congress leaders are stuck at Srinagar airport due to bad weather.

Sanjay Singh of the AAP said that the address is a ‘bundle of lies’ and that the AAP will boycott it.

President Droupadi Murmu addressed the joint sitting of Parliament for the first time since being elected to the post. She outlayed the government’s vision for the current year.

In her first address to Parliament as President, Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday expressed her gratitude to citizens for electing a stable government for two consecutive terms and said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has been identified as a decisive government.

“Wherever there is political instability anywhere in the world, those countries are surrounded by a massive crisis. But due to the decisions my government took in the national interest, India is in a better position as compared to other countries,” Murmu said.

Terming the government, a stable, fearless, and decisive one, “Murmu said, “My government is working towards realising the big dreams.”

“My government has worked for every section of society without any discrimination. As a result of the efforts of my government in the last few years, many basic facilities have either reached 100 per cent population or are very close to that target,” the President said.

  • Playing tour games on Indian pitches is irrelevant: Steve Smith

Playing tour games on Indian pitches is irrelevant: Steve Smith

    [ad_1]

Sydney: Former Australia skipper Steve Smith says his team is better off training on its own rather than playing tour games on “irrelevant” Indian pitches ahead of the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

Australia has decided not to play a single tour game in India during the month-long Test series, primarily due to the hosts serving up green tops for practice matches and spinning tracks for the actual games.

Smith, who won the country’s best men’s player award for the fourth time in his career on Monday, said nets sessions would benefit his side more than the tour games.

The 18-member squad, led by Pat Cummins, had a pre-series camp on spin-friendly tracks in Sydney and will have a week-long stint in Bengaluru before the first Test in Nagpur on February 9.

“We normally have two tour games over in England. This time we don’t have a tour game in India,” Smith was quoted as saying by news.com.au on Monday ahead of the team’s departure to India.

“The last time we went (to India) I’m pretty sure we got served up a green top (to practice on) and it was sort of irrelevant. Hopefully, we get really good training facilities where the ball is likely to do what it’s likely to do out in the middle, and we can get our practice in,” said Smith, who beat Travis Head and David Warner to win the Allan Border medal on Monday.

Australia has been criticized for not including tour games, which are an integral part of a long series, in their itinerary. But Smith said rigorous nets sessions will help spinners train better.

“We’re better off having our own nets and getting spinners in and bowling as much as they can.”

Smith, whose side had lost the series 1-2 when it toured India in 2017, indicated a lot of thinking had into the decision.

“We’ll wait and see when we hit the ground. I think we’ve made the right decision to not play a tour match. As I said, last time they dished up a green top for us (in a tour game) and we barely faced any spin, so it’s kind of irrelevant.”

The Australians had a training session in Sydney last week on pitches that had significant cracks to replicate Indian conditions.

“It’s (the Test series in India) certainly huge. I don’t know if it’s (winning in India) the final frontier. I’ve never won there, I’ve been there twice (for Tests), and it’s always difficult playing there. We’ve got some challenges in front of us, but the guys are ready for it,” added Smith.
