If situation escalates, headed for 3rd Palestine intifada: Israel newspaper

    [ad_1]

An Israeli newspaper warned, on Saturday morning, of the possibility of a third Palestinian intifada, if the security cabinet decided to carry out a major military operation in the cities of the West Bank.

These warnings came the day after seven Israelis were killed in an illegal Jewish-only settlement in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday, January 27; the largest since 2011.

Friday’s attack came a day after nine Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin.

Israeli military commentator Ron Ben-Yishai said in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper that the attack was “undoubtedly retaliation” for the Jenin military operation in which Israeli occupation forces killed nine Palestinians on Thursday.

“Israel must immediately prevent further operations as well as retaliation by extremist Jews in Jerusalem,” he added.

“This could be done by flooding the area with Israeli forces while avoiding major military operations in Palestinian cities at this time,” the commentator said.

He said the events in Jenin and Jerusalem over the past two days “could raise the level of extreme violence, which has been relatively contained in recent months, to a real uprising involving crowds of Palestinians and Jewish extremists.”
He stressed that the main task of the Israeli security forces would be to prevent such an escalation.

He added that in the face of “lone wolves” (referring to Palestinians who carry out operations on their own without any organizational or political affiliation), “a major operation in Palestinian cities or in the neighborhoods of East Jerusalem is not expected to produce significant results, and it may only lead to fanning the flames.”

  • Earth likely to cross 1.5 degree warming in next decade: AI study predicts

Earth likely to cross 1.5 degree warming in next decade: AI study predicts

    [ad_1]

Boston: The world will cross the global warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius within 10 to 15 years, even if emissions decline, according to a study that employed artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the results.

If emissions remain high over the next few decades, the study predicts a one-in-two chance that Earth will become 2 degrees Celsius hotter on average compared to pre-industrial times by the middle of this century, and a more than four-in-five chance of reaching that threshold by 2060.

The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, employed AI to predict climate change using recent temperature observations from around the world.

“Using an entirely new approach that relies on the current state of the climate system to make predictions about the future, we confirm that the world is on the cusp of crossing the 1.5 C threshold,” said the study’s lead author, Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at Stanford University in the US.

“Our AI model is quite convinced that there has already been enough warming that 2 C is likely to be exceeded if reaching net-zero emissions takes another half century,” said Diffenbaugh, who co-authored the research with Colorado State University atmospheric scientist Elizabeth Barnes.

The finding may be controversial, Diffenbaugh said, because other authoritative assessments, including the most recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), have concluded that the 2-degree mark is unlikely to be reached if emissions decline to net zero before 2080.

Crossing the 1.5 C and 2 C thresholds would mean failing to achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, in which countries pledged to keep global warming to “well below” 2 C above pre-industrial levels, while pursuing the more ambitious goal of limiting warming to 1.5 C.

Previous assessments have used global climate models to simulate future warming trajectories; statistical techniques to extrapolate recent warming rates; and carbon budgets to calculate how quickly emissions will need to decline to stay below the Paris Agreement targets.

  • Guv to seek views from Kerala Univ VC on CPI-M youth leader PhD thesis row

Guv to seek views from Kerala Univ VC on CPI-M youth leader PhD thesis row

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: With the controversy over errors in the PhD thesis of Kerala State Youth Commission Chairperson and CPI-M youth leader Chintha Jerome continuing, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who is also the Chancellor of state universities, will seek an explanation from the Kerala University Vice Chancellor after receiving complaints in this regard.

This move has come at a time when the CPI-M top brass is mulling a scrutiny of the PhD thesis and has given the nod to the Kerala University to constitute a four-member team to scrutinise it.

This special team will submit its report to the University Syndicate, which will then be passed to the Senate. The Senate, in turn, will advise the Chancellor on what needs to be done.

Jerome’s dissertation is titled “The ideological foundation of Malayalam commercial cinema in the neoliberal times”, for which she was awarded a PhD in English Literature from the Kerala University in 2021.

Detractors of Jerome have come out with a fundamental mistake in her thesis where she has written that Malayalam poem titled “Vazhakkula” was penned by Vyloppilli while it was originally written by another hugely popular poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai.

Jerome’s principal guide for her thesis was the then Pro V-C of Kerala University P.P. Ajayakumar.

Her fellow youth leaders in the CPI-M are defending her to the hilt by stating that it is just a technical error and spelling mistakes are not a serious issue as this is not the first time such things are happening.

Meanwhile for the first time after this controversy erupted, Jerome broke her silence and admitted that what happened was a human error.

“The reference to mistake that has occurred does not have relevance to the topic of the thesis. It was just said in context. I am thankful to those who have pointed out this error and this is just a human error. I am going to bring my thesis as a book and in it, the necessary corrections will be made,” she said.

Since this issue surfaced last week, every day there are protests and marches being taken out by the student and youth wing of the Congress.

Social media is buzzing with hilarious posts, many of which have become viral now.

Numerous complaints have also surfaced against this and with the Assembly session all set to resume its sitting shortly, all eyes will be on the Congress-led opposition.

‘Pathaan’ success victory over BJP’s negative politics: Akhilesh Yadav

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday termed the success of film Pathaan a victory of positive thinking, and a fitting reply to BJP’s negative politics.

In a tweet in Hindi, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Pathan becoming a superhit is a victory of positive thinking in the country and in the world, and it is a befitting reply to the negative politics of the BJP.”

Several Hindu rights activists had called for the boycott of the film, which has since its release posted record-breaking revenues.

In the run up to the film, and even after its release, goons across states vandalised cinema halls and tore the film’s posters.

A boycott call was made and trended on Twitter ostensibly over the film’s female lead Deepika Padukone’s outfit its cut and colour in one of the film’s songs.

The spy thriller has broken many box office records and has raised over Rs 500 crore gross worldwide since its release on January 25.

  • Hyderabad: SC committee finds several irregularities in HCA

Hyderabad: SC committee finds several irregularities in HCA

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The supervisory committee appointed by the Supreme Court of India to monitor the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) submitted its latest findings to the apex court on Tuesday.

The report revealed startling facts on HCA memberships.

No record of memberships exists. No documentary evidence on how the electoral roll of HCA was drawn in 2019 by the election officer.

A few HCA members own 7-8 clubs. These members are responsible for ‘subverting the democracy’ by using their votes as well as manipulating the selection procedure for state teams.

“They blackmail all institutionalized processes provided by Justice Lodha Committee reforms incorporated in the by-laws in state team selection procedure, buying and selling of teams,” the report said.

“These said members also indulge in leasing teams that are under their control to brokers for lakhs of rupees. These brokers loot families of budding cricketers who dream of playing league matches hosted by HCA. These matches form the basis for selection to state teams,” the report said.

HCA, which is recognised by the BCCI as the sole representative of cricket in Telangana, contains an imbalanced democracy. “This is because a majority of Hyderababd-based clubs form the electoral college of HCA while the remaining districts of Telangana do not have an equal say. The committee is working on a suitable model of memberships that are equitable,” the report stated.

Moreover, the names of member clubs change frequently, raising suspicion of clubs being sold for crores of rupees, the report points out.

“There have been complaints from the state government alleging large-scale frauds in HCA memberships, lack of intent to provide equal membership rights to districts and has also highlighted the disappearance of hundreds of clubs that existed 35 years ago. There is no record of how these clubs disappeared and who took them over,” the report stated.

The report confirms through sources that membership frauds have existed since the 90s and have increased over time. It then says that the chairman of the committee was hesitant to sign the report, for reasons unknown.

“Normally, frauds in membership have to be looked into by the Ombudsman. Some beneficiaries appointed the Ombudsman of their choice by using their majority and made sure complaints regarding fraudulent memberships, multiple clubs etc never see the light of the day,” the report said.

Finally, the report suggested a decentralised structure for HCA with all districts and municipal corporations as members in order to stop the monopoly of private clubs.

The selection process should be in line with Justice Lodha reforms which recognize the territory as the basis for memberships and led to the concept of one state-one vote.

“A change is always desirable when systems are manipulated and institutionalized corruption takes over. The recent arrest of a vice-president of a member club of HCA on corruption charges only shows how deep-rooted the disease is,” the report concluded.

  • Scandal-hit BJP leader Ramesh Jarkiholi holds long meeting with CM Bommai

Scandal-hit BJP leader Ramesh Jarkiholi holds long meeting with CM Bommai

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: A day after accusing Congress state president D K Shivakumar of being involved in a conspiracy behind the sex scandal that led to his resignation as minister in 2021, BJP leader Ramesh Jarkiholi on Tuesday held a lengthy discussion with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, sources said.

Jarkiholi had on Monday demanded that the sex scandal case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation as a “big racket” is involved in which politicians and bureaucrats are honey trapped and blackmailed.

Calling for the arrest of the young woman in the case and her accomplices including two people from Mandya, the BJP MLA had charged that Shivakumar was behind the scandal.

“Today, Ramesh Jarkiholi had a long meeting with the Chief Minister. He met him at his residence for 10 minutes, then travelled with him in the flight till Hubballi,” sources close to the Chief Minister told PTI.

The sources also said the meeting revolved mainly around the sex scandal and the alleged role of Shivakumar and a few others from Belagavi district.

Jarkiholi had insisted that the case should be handed over to the CBI for thorough investigation. It was not clear whether the Chief Minister heeded to the demand.

In a press conference on Monday, Jarkiholi had claimed that there are at least 120 sleaze video clippings available involving various officers and politicians who are being blackmailed.

He said the issue is very serious and the government should get it investigated by the premier investigation agency.
