Riyadh: The highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury has been officially announced on February 26 in Saudi Arabia.
This will be the first time that YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul and Tommy Fury, half-brother of two-time world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury,will fight in Saudi Arabia.
The details were made official by Jake Paul on Friday, January 27, via Instagram.

The two arch-rivals boxers have seen scheduled encounters fall out twice, but are finally ready to go head-to-head after the two camps fell to a grudge match in Riyadh.
Paul (6–0) and Fury (8–0) were scheduled to face each other for the first time in December 2021, but Fury pulled out due to a medical issue. The match was then rescheduled for August 2022 in New York. However, the British boxer ran into visa problems while trying to enter the United States.
The Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury match will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It will air on ESPN+ PPV and BT Sport Box Office. Boxing fans can also watch the fight via cable and satellite pay-per-view providers.
According to what Most Valuable Promotions posted on Twitter, the match will be held in Diriyah as part of Diriyah Season activities. Unfortunately, more details, such as ticket prices, exact location and time, have not yet been revealed.

Muslim women can approach only family courts for divorce: Madras HC

Chennai: The Madras High Court has ruled that Muslim women should approach only family courts and not private bodies like Shariat Council consisting of a few members of Jamaat in order to seek ‘Khula’ (divorce).
The court held that the Khula certificates issued by the private bodies are invalid in law.
A bench of Justice C. Shivaraman quashed a Khula certificate issued by the Shariat Council of Tamil Nadu Towheed Jamath, Chennai, and directed the estranged couple to approach a family court or the Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority to resolve their disputes.
The judge issued the direction while hearing a petition of a man seeking the court quash the Khula certificate obtained by his wife from the Shariat Council in 2017.
The petitioner also contended that the Shariat Council, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975, has no authority to issue such certificates. He also told the court that he had filed a petition restoring conjugal rights in 2017 and obtained an ex-parte decree also.
He said that a petition for executing the decree was pending before an additional family court judge.
The court heard the petitioner and the Shariat Council as the petitioner’s wife chose to remain absent and did not appear in person or through counsel.
The judge further said that only a judicial forum was empowered to pass a decree to dissolve a marriage under Section 7(1)(b) of the Family Courts Act, 1984.

Justice Shivaraman also said that the Madras High Court in the Badar Sayeed versus Union of India (2017) case had restrained Khasis from issuing Khula certificates.

Activist Shoma Sen seeks discharge in Elgar Parishad case

Mumbai: Activist-academician Shoma Sen, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, on Tuesday moved an application before a special court here seeking discharge in the matter on the ground she has been falsely arrested and implicated for “exposing illegal arrests, torture and deaths of those defending their fundamental rights”.
She moved the plea, through advocate Sharif Shaikh, before judge Rajesh Katariya, presiding over the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court.
The court will hear the matter on February 14.
Sen, an English literature professor and Dalit and women’s rights activist, was arrested on June 6, 2018. She is currently in jail under judicial custody.
“Applicant (Sen) has been falsely arrested and her implication in the present offence is with mala fide and prejudiced intent merely because she has been a consistent defender of human rights and civil liberties which, many a time, have exposed illegal arrests, torture and deaths of those defending their fundamental rights,” her plea said.
The NIA, which is investigating the case, has claimed incriminating material against the accused was found in the computer of a co-accused.
However, the activist, in her plea, said letters and communications allegedly containing incriminating material against the accused persons in the case were neither in her possession, nor addressed to her, or by her.
Hence, to infer that these communications are authored by or addressed to some of the accused is “merely a baseless and prejudiced claim” that cannot be used as a ground to frame charges against her as this evidence would be deemed to be based on hearsay, said the application.

There is no proof that the name “Shoma” in any of the so-called electronic letters/ communications refers to the applicant, the plea said.
There are simply no indications that the so-called electronic letters/communications were authored by or addressed to any member of the proscribed Communist Party of India (Maoist), it said.
The academician further claimed there is a selective and prejudicial targeting of the applicant and other accused.
Sen also sought discharge on the ground she has a host of health-related issues and is under medication for acute ailments such as glaucoma, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome and advanced arthritis, among others.
The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches delivered at the Elgar Parishad conclave held at Shaniwarwada in Pune city on December 31, 2017, which the police claimed triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial located on the city’s outskirts.
The Pune police, which initially probed the case, had claimed the conclave was backed by Maoists.
Later, the probe in the case, in which more than a dozen activists and academicians have been named as accused, was transferred to the NIA.

Plea in Kerala HC claims Vizhinjam sea port construction causing noise pollution

Kochi: A plea in the Kerala High Court has claimed that the Vizhinjam sea port construction work was causing noise pollution in the area.
Refuting the allegation in the plea, moved by a Thiruvananthapuram-based resort, the Vizhinjam International Sea Port Ltd and Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd claimed the sound generated by the construction activity, during day and night, was below the noise standards contained in the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) guidelines.
In view of the claim by the two companies, the High Court on Tuesday directed them to produce the EHS guidelines on noise standards.
The court also directed them to place before it the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order appointing a monitoring body to oversee the construction activities, including the issue of noise pollution.
The direction was issued as the two companies contended that the NGT has issued an order appointing a monitoring agency to keep watch over all the sea port construction-related activities, including the issue of noise pollution.
The court also recorded the submission of the two companies that they were adhering to the sound limit fixed as per the schedule attached to the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, during the sea port construction.
The court’s order came on a plea by Bethsaida Hermitage complaining that the sea port construction activity was causing noise pollution in the area.
It has also urged the court to direct the two companies to desist from undertaking noisy construction work during the night hours at the project site till the pendency of the plea.

Telangana logged highest inflation in FY23: Economic Survey

Hyderabad: Telangana has the highest inflation rate in the country, revealed the Economic Survey 2022-23 tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
According to the report, Telangana has an inflation rate of 8.7 percent between April and December 2022 against the national average of 6.8 percent for the same period.
The report also shows that the inflation in rural Telangana was 9.2 percent while it was 8.3 percent in the urban areas.
Telangana, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh saw especially high rates of inflation in 2022-23.
Fuel and clothing were the major contributors for the surge in inflation. Another contributing factor was food inflation due to high prices of tomatoes as a result of crop damage and supply disruption due to unseasonal heavy rains in states like Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh between April-December 2022.
Reacting to the Economic Survey report, Telangana BJP President Bandi Sanjay Kumar blamed the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government for the high inflation.
Sanjay said that fuel is a major contributor to rise in inflation. “BRS government won’t reduce VAT on petrol/diesel prices even though the Centre and majority of states reduced it. KCR continued to push the burden on common man,” he said.
The BJP leader also slammed the BRS for boycotting President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session of both houses of the Parliament. “It is a shame that the BRS boycotted the speech when an adivasi woman was addressing both houses of Parliament for the first time after being elected President,” tweeted Sanjay, who is also a Member of Parliament.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has also attacked BRS for boycotting the President’s speech. “Skipping 1st joint address of Hon’ble President shows total lack of respect for a tribal daughter of India Time to respect India’s highest office and institutions,” tweeted the minister.
He alleged that BRS and Chief Minister KCR’s only focus is his own family. He said they have no respect for the Constitution, conventions, and common courtesies.

JNU renews contract of campus security firm despite controversies

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday said it has renewed the contract of Cyclops Security a firm whose staff has been accused of mishandling student protesters and committing theft on the campus.
The JNU Teachers’ Association and several student bodies have raised the demand of replacing the firm.
“This is for information of all that w.e.f. 01.02.2023 at 0700 hours new Security Service Contract with Cyclops Security will start,” the JNU administration said in a statement.
“All new Civilian Security Guards will take over the duties from Ex-Serviceman officers Security Guards. All JNU Residents are, therefore, requested to cooperate with the new security guards,” the notification added.
The administration said that security is the collective responsibility of all residents and their active cooperation with the security staff is required for a safe and secure campus.
Several incidents of theft on the campus have been reported in recent years. JNUTA too highlighted the issue of increasing incidents of theft last year in a statement.
“The Cyclops Security and Allied Services Pvt Ltd have to be held responsible for what can be described at best as their complete dereliction of duty to carry out the services they were hired for,” JNUTA had said in a statement last year in March.
Cyclops Security has been in charge of JNU’s security since the time of the previous Vice-Chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar. However, despite multiple thefts, the security firm has not been dismissed.

Following the 2020 clashes on the campus, the security agency was accused of colluding with ABVP by allowing them to enter the premises of the University and attack staff and students.
On 5 January 2020, masked people armed with rods and sticks attacked several students and teachers and injured scores of them.
After the incident, Jagadesh Kumar had said that the administration was in the process of appointing a new security agency.

Bihar labourers trapped in Tajikistan appeal to state, Centre for rescue

Patna: A number of labourers from Bihar’s Siwan and other districts said that they are trapped in Tajikistan and requested the state and Central government to rescue them.
The labourers went to Tajikistan on contract basis to work and alleged that the company has extended the work period from 11 hours to 14 hours but is not giving money for the overtime.
As per the contract with an Indian placement company named Pari Enterprises and Tajikistan-based company TGM, the work period is 11 hours but the company forcibly asks them to work 14 hours, the labourers said. Moreover, they are only offered boiled rice, and potatoes to eat and contaminated water to drink.
The family members of the labourers in Siwan district claimed that many of them fell ill and are not physically and mentally fit for work.
Some of the labourers of Siwan were identified as Ramakant Kushwaha and Ramesh Kushwaha of Hardiya Bangra village, Om Prakash of Orma village, Mantu Singh of Teliabagh village, Motim Ansari of Nawada village, Nand Ji of Morwa village, and Sunil Kumar of Viyahi village. Another labourer named Harikesh Yadav is a native of Bhore Kalyanpur in Gopalganj district.
Besides Bihar, dozens of labourers of other states are also trapped in Tajikistan, they said.

Sonia attends joint sitting of Parliament as senior Cong leaders stuck in Kashmir

New Delhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi sat alone in her designated front row bench in Parliament’s Central Hall during the president’s address on Tuesday as senior leaders of her party remained stuck in Srinagar due to bad weather, after attending an event to mark the culmination of the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
However, a steady stream of leaders from across the aisle approached Sonia Gandhi and exchanged pleasantries.
Before the joint sitting began, BJP MPs were seen congratulating J P Nadda, whose term as party president was extended till June 2024, as he entered the Parliament building.
Gandhi, who is usually flanked by senior party colleagues, was also greeted by both President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was sitting near Sonia Gandhi, was also seen leaning and speaking to her.
Gandhi, however, was seen engaged in a conversation for around half an hour with TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien who was sitting a row behind her.
Incidentally, the TMC had earlier said the party had not been called to join the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra.
O’Brien and Gandhi were seen having a lengthy conversation before Murmu’s speech began.

Putting political rivalries aside, AIADMK leader M Thambi Durai and DMK’s TR Baalu were seen smiling and hugging each other while having a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After the Economic Survey was presented and the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day, PM Modi also enquired from Chirag Paswan about his mother’s health.
In her first address to the joint sitting of Parliament on the first day of the Budget session, President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said the country has a government that is “stable, fearless, decisive”, giving thrust to ‘virasat’ (heritage) as well as ‘vikas’ (development) and working for all classes without any discrimination.
Friendly vibes were visible among different party MPs during the joint sitting of Parliament.
A bench, which usually seats five people, was seen being shared by six MPs from three different parties — NCP’s Supriya Sule, DMK’s Kanimozhi, TMC’s Saugata Ray and BJP leaders, Neeraj Shekhar, Shivkumar Udasi and Nishikant Dubey.
During the speech, BJP MPs were seen thumping their desks frequently, which the opposition claimed they were instructed to do so.

India, US discuss situation in Indo-Pacific

New Delhi: India and the US on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, with the objective of ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
The situation in the Indo-Pacific came up for discussion during talks between Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra and visiting US Under Secretary of State for Political Victoria Nuland.
In the talks, held under the framework of annual India-US Foreign Office Consultations, the two sides covered contemporary regional developments in South Asia, Indian Ocean Region and the Indo-Pacific, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“The two sides reiterated their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, with the objective of ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the region,” it said in a statement.
The MEA said both sides reviewed progress made towards further consolidating the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
It said Kwatra and Nuland took stock of a number of initiatives and frameworks that reflect common strategic interests, including Quad, I2U2, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness Initiative (IPMDA).
While the Quad comprises India, the US, Australia and Japan, the members of the I2U2 are India, Israel, the US and the United Arab Emirates.
US President Joe Biden in May last year launched the IPEF, which is an initiative aimed at deeper cooperation among like-minded countries in areas like clean energy, supply-chain resilience and digital trade.

In May last year, the Quad leaders launched the IPMDA which is primarily aimed at monitoring regional waters against the backdrop of China’s increasing muscle-flexing in the region.
“Both sides agreed to work together during India’s ongoing G20 Presidency. They also agreed to intensify cooperation in multilateral fora and international organisations, including the UN, on global issues of mutual interest,” the MEA said.
“The productive and substantive meeting enabled both sides to continue a regular dialogue that has been instrumental in enhancing mutual understanding and in identification of opportunities for further growth and enrichment of the India-US partnership,” it added.

Education needs to be priority for govt, political leaders: Delhi Dy CM

New Delhi: Youth must be inspired and provided with opportunities to become life-long learners, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Tuesday, asserting that education needs to be the priority for government as well as political leaders.
He was speaking at a conference — ‘Prayaas – Young Minds, New Possibilities’ — organised by Udhyam Learning Foundation with an aim to unlock the potential of India’s youth, a statement said.
“Indian youth holds the key to the nation’s advancement. Youth must be inspired and provided with opportunities to become life-long learners. Hear them and trust them as they will become the innovators who will change the world in the future.
“We as enablers, need to be more experimental in our approach and keep testing new models for educational transformation and bring them to scale for our country at large. Education needs to be a priority for policy, government and political leaders,” Sisodia, who is also the education minister, said.
Mekin Maheshwari, founder, ULF, said ‘Prayaas’ is an effort to unite like-minded people and organizations who care deeply about the lack of opportunities and pathways for India’s youth to realise their potential.
“The goal is to build a thriving and supportive ecosystem, where every individual feels empowered to define their own path,” Maheshwari said.
The statement said it said ‘Prayaas’ aimed to stimulate a “cohesive and collective” understanding of the current issues and instil a “sense of urgency” towards building new pathways for the youth of our country.
Change-makers, practitioners and leaders from over 120 of India’s top organisations including Delhi government school students, teachers and other independent people, took part in the event.
