Bose would be embarrassed to know he was being used to diminish Nehru, Gandhi: Guha

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: On most issues barring non-violence, Subhas Chandra Bose was on the same page as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and would have been “embarrassed and pained” to know he was being used to diminish the two leaders, claimed historian Ramachandra Guha.

Speaking on the launch of the third edition of his seminal work “India After Gandhi”, Guha on Tuesday noted that it was Bose who called Gandhi “Father of the Nation” and wondered “how did they (the BJP) manage to convert Gandhi, Bose, Nehru and Patel who all worked together into rivals”.

“On most things except non-violence, Bose was on the same side as Gandhi and Nehru. He would be the first person to be appalled, embarrassed and pained by what is going on, that Bose is being used to decertify Gandhi and Nehru,” said the renowned biographer of Gandhi.

The 64-year-old author during the free-wheeling discussion gave telling examples of the respect and admiration Bose had for Gandhi, Nehru and vice-versa.

For instance, he revealed how when Bose started the India National Army (INA), he named his brigades “Gandhi, Nehru and Azad (Chandra Shekhar), or how after Bose died in 1945, Gandhi made a speech in Calcutta – now Kolkata – and saluted his patriotism.

“Even on the question of the Congress presidency when Bose resigned … he said if I cannot get the trust of India’s greatest man – that’s what he thought Gandhi was — I would not continue as the president,” he said.

Bose, who was appointed as the Indian National Congress (INC) president in 1938, resigned from his position in 1939.

For the “confused” critics of Gandhi and those claiming that it was violence that got India its independence, Guha said, it is important to know that every country in Asia and Africa that won independence through violence is a “dictatorship” today.

“I think Bose is a great patriot, but the idea that he was in some ways greater to Gandhi, an alternative to Gandhi . . . I think you should read Bose himself to say what he said about Gandhi,” argued the historian of modern India.

On the Kashmir imbroglio, Guha said India due to the “petty party politics” of the Opposition missed two “extraordinary opportunities” – one under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and another under Manmohan Singh – of somewhere coming close to a just resolution.

He argued that mature democracy on important foreign policy questions should go for “some bi-partisanship”, something that both the Congress and BJP failed as Opposition in 2003 during Vajpayee’s and in 2007 when Manmohan Singh was the prime minister.

“Those two extraordinary missed opportunities and you have to blame first the Congress and then the BJP for putting the petty party interest not just over the national interest but over the possibility of peace in South Asia,” he noted.

First released in 2007 by publishing house Pan Macmillan India, “India after Gandhi” is touted to be a magisterial account of the pains, struggles, humiliations and glories of the world’s largest democracy.

  • Futuristic, growth-oriented: Karnataka BJP leaders on Union Budget 2023

Futuristic, growth-oriented: Karnataka BJP leaders on Union Budget 2023

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Leaders of the ruling BJP, including chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and his cabinet colleagues, on Wednesday, hailed the Union budget 2023-24, while the opposition termed it “promises” to fool the people.

The first budget of Amrit Kaal presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is futuristic, growth-oriented and has laid a strong foundation for India@100 in 2047. It has focused on every sector and will benefit every section of society giving an impetus to the Aatmanibhar Bharat vision, Dr K. Sudhakar, State Minister for Health, said.

“I thank PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for central assistance of Rs 5,300 crore for the Upper Bhadra Project.

This will immensely benefit the people of Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Tumkur and Davangere districts by providing irrigation facilities to farmers and recharging the groundwater table to provide -drinking water in drought-prone taluks of these districts,” he said.

“The Economic Survey 2023 tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday showed that the central and state governments’ budgeted expenditure in the health sector reached 2.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022-23.

This is in the direction of the vision of National Health Policy – 2017, which has envisaged increasing the government’s health expenditure to 2.5% of GDP by 2025. The share of the government’s health expenditure in total health outlay has increased from 28.6% in 2014 to 40.6% in 2019.

Thanks to Ayushman Bharat, the out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) as a share of total health expenditure has come down to 48.2% in 2019 from 64.2% in 2014,” he said.

The budget proposal to establish 157 new nursing colleges in co-location with the existing 157 medical colleges established since 2014 is a welcome move to address the increasing human resource needs in the healthcare sector, he said.

The special focus on promoting millets will not only ensure better nutrition and health among citizens but will also boost our fight against climate change. This is a great step towards ensuring food and water security for our future generations, Minister Sudhakar stated.

Karnataka Minister for Power, Kannada and Culture V. Sunil Kumar described the Union budget as balanced and prepared keeping the interests of the middle class in mind.

Seven priority zones have been identified as ‘Saptahrshi’ against the backdrop of Azadi Amrit Mahotsav. To ensure a green revolution, the PM Pranam scheme has been announced. The proposal to invest Rs 6,000 crore will play an important role in the development of the coastal region, minister Sunil Kumar explained.

The target set for the state governments to produce five MMT green hydrogen by 2030 and the decision to invest Rs 25,000 is welcome. This has increased the responsibility of the states, he explained.

Meanwhile, JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy dubbed the budget as a lure to fool people. “It seems the projects have been announced to fool people in the election year,” he said.

The projects announced would be implemented only after a change of government at the centre. “I had written a letter long ago to consider projects announced in the budgets as national projects. When will the programmes announced in the election year be implemented? Kumaraswamy questioned.

People know how much of the announced fund for the Upper Bhadra project would be given to the state once BJP is defeated in the state.

Hyderabad: Reacting to the union budget delivered by Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman BRS MLC K Kavitha Kalvakuntla on Wednesday said that the income tax rebate on income up to Rs 7 lakhs in the new tax regime is of no use to the people of Telangana.

  • UAE-India flight: Drunk Italian woman runs half-naked on plane

UAE-India flight: Drunk Italian woman runs half-naked on plane

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Mumbai Police has arrested an Italian woman passenger for allegedly creating a ruckus mid-air on a Vistara Airline flight soon after taking off from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai on January 30.

The passenger was arrested by Sahar police early Monday morning after the flight landed in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). She was later given bail by a court here.

According to the Mumbai police the woman who was reportedly inebriated created a ruckus insisting that she be seated in business class despite being booked in economy. She also took off some of her clothes and walked up and down the aisle in a partially naked state hurling abuses and assaulting crew members.

“We confirm that there was an unruly passenger on Vistara flight UK 256 operating from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai on 30 January 2023. In view of the continued unruly conduct and violent behaviour, the captain issued a warning card and made a decision to restrain the passenger,” a Vistara spokesperson said.

“The pilot made regular announcements to assure the other customers onboard of their safety and security. In accordance with the guidelines and our stringent standard operating procedures (SOPs), the security agencies on-ground were informed about taking immediate action upon arrival. The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities as per the SOPs,” the spokesperson added.

After registering a case against the passenger, the Mumbai Police filed a charge sheet within a day.

“Mumbai Police has filed a chargesheet in record time in a case of misbehaviour by an airline passenger mid-air,” police said.

A medical examination was also conducted on the woman before booking her under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. The police said they have completed all formalities of recording statements of co-passengers and crew and others.

“We have completed all the due formalities as per law and filed the chargesheet after recording all the relevant statements and medical and legal procedures,” DCP Dixit Gedam said.

  • No more tax exemption for Insurance policies where premium is above Rs 5L

No more tax exemption for Insurance policies where premium is above Rs 5L

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Insurance policies where the premium is over Rs 5 lakh will no longer be tax-exempt, as per the provisions in the Union Budget 2023-24.

Kapil Mehta, Co-founder, SecureNow Insurance Broker said the income from traditional insurances where the premium is over Rs 5 lakh will not be tax exempt. While, this will dampen the interest of individuals to buy high value traditional insurances, it will increase the focus on term plans and pure risk covers which is good.

A concern is that it should not result in a significant shift towards purely investment-oriented unit link insurances, Mehta said.

Arihant Bardia, CIO and Co Founder, Valtrust said if premium paid on insurance policies (excl. ULIP) exceeds Rs 5 lakh in a year, then the proceeds from those policies will be taxable (except in case of death benefit).

Bardia said this is negative for insurance — as it will impact savings products which are usually high value and margin products (though not protection). However, smaller policies remain unaffected. Overall a negative for insurance companies as it will impact the high value premium policies — thus impacting overall industry GWP growth.

A similar provision was already introduced for ULIPs in 2021 wherein the aggregate premium was restricted to Rs 2.5 lakh in a year for tax exempt proceeds”, said Bardia.

Mehta said improvements in ease of doing business specifically, the changes pertaining to simplification of the KYC process, one stop solution for identity and address updating, common business identifier, unified filing, and entity digilocker will make placement of insurances easier. Claims payment would also be facilitated.

Changes in personal income tax will increase personal disposable income. This will result in individuals ability to buy better, higher value insurances to manage their risk, Mehta said.
