Government refuses to comment on Adani Group crisis

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday refused to comment on the fraud allegations levelled by a US short seller on Adani Group, which triggered a massive USD 90-billion rout in the group firms’ shares, saying it does not comment on individual company matters.

“We in government don’t respond to issues related to a particular company,” Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth said during the post Budget interaction with media here.

Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran on Tuesday had also refused to comment on the impact of the rout in Adani Group shares following a damning report by US-based short seller Hindenburg Research.

Shares of Adani Group firms slumped on Wednesday and have lost more than Rs 7 lakh crore or about 38 per cent of their combined market cap in the last five trading sessions amid concerns over US-based short seller Hindenburg Research’s report.

Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after Hindenburg in the report made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation, at the Gautam Adani-led group.

Hindenburg released the report on January 24 — the day on which Adani Enterprises’ Rs 20,000-crore follow-on share sale opened for anchor investors, while the allegations have been rejected by the conglomerate.

At the end of Wednesday’s trading session, all the group companies settled in negative territory with shares of three companies hit their lowest price band.

Shares of Adani Enterprises nosedived 28.45 percent to close at Rs 2,128.70 on the BSE despite the company’s Rs 20,000-crore share sale sailed through on the last day on Tuesday after non-retail investors bid in big volumes. There was, however, a muted response from retail investors and company employees.
The counter of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone plunged 19.69 percent, Adani Total Gas slumped 10 percent, Adani Green Energy declined 5.78 percent, Adani Wilmar fell 4.99 percent, Adani Wilmar went down 4.99 percent, Adani Power dropped 4.98 percent and Adani Transmission slipped 2.46 percent.

In addition, Ambuja Cements tanked 16.56 percent, while ACC dropped 6.34 percent and NDTV went down 4.98 percent.

  • Gautam Adani to take $10B loan to stay in World’s richest people list

Gautam Adani to take $10B loan to stay in World’s richest people list

    [ad_1]

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, who stood at the 10th spot on the Forbes Real-time billionaire list for 2023 has now slipped out of the world’s top ten richest persons. Soon after Hindenburg Research report, Adani group witnessed massive decline in their share prices and Gautam Adani too lost over $10 B of net worth. Now there are no Indians in the list of world’s top ten richest people.

To ensure that the world’s top ten richest list has at least an Indian, the Adani Group has decided to take $10B loan from the government. The government is likely to approve the loan. The governments decision to approve the loan was taken after Adani Group covered itself in Nationalism when Hindenburg research accused Adani group of being engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

Sources suggest that Adani group is also likely to start a fund raise activity where every citizen can donate to make an Indian the world’s richest man. “During the global recession, India is a bright spot, the world is looking at us with a hope and we must not disappoint the world with not having any Indian in the world’s richest people list” said an economic expert.

  • Odisha CM expresses concern on reduction of MGNREGS, food security in Union Budget

Odisha CM expresses concern on reduction of MGNREGS, food security in Union Budget

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday expressed concern over reduction of funds for MGNREGS and food security scheme in the Union Budget for 2023-24.

Patnaik said the budget has some good aspects which needs to be appreciated and there are some concerns which need to be looked into, and addressed.

“I have concerns regarding the drastic reduction of funds for MGNREGS. This will hit the poor people. The reduction in food security budget along with reduction in procurement will hit the poor people as well as farmers,” he said.

About Rs 80,000 crores was spent on procurement in 2021-22 while only about Rs 60,000 crores is kept in this budget. This will cause serious problems in selling crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP), he said.

While in 2021-22 an amount of Rs 2 lakh crores was spent under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), in this budget only Rs 1.37 lakh crore is kept for this purpose, pointed out the CM.

Patnaik also said that there has been a decrease or no growth in health and education sectors.

He further said that the budget provision for Ayushman Bharat scheme is Rs 7,200 crore for the entire country while Odisha spends almost about Rs 2,400 crore on Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) in private facilities alone.

“If we include government facilities, it would be around Rs 6,000 crores annually under the BSKY. Health is an important priority for our state and we believe in investing and in sincere efforts,” he said.

Slamming the Odisha BJP leaders, who are pressing hard for implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Odisha, Patnaik said he now hopes that the BJP state leadership will stop hoodwinking the people of Odisha.

Speaking about the good steps taken by the Centre in the Budget, he said the increased capital investment, support to drinking water initiatives, and increasing rural housing will accelerate growth as well as have social impact in rural areas.

He also welcomed the Prime Minister’s thrust on millets. Stating that Odisha Millet Mission is a pioneering initiative in the country, Patnaik said he feels happy that millets have been given importance in the budget.

“The focus on new world technologies like artificial intelligence, internet of things etc. is appreciable. These are some of the good aspects of the budget. The focus on primitive tribal groups is a welcome step,” he added.

  • Why can’t govt provide gender-neutral toilets? asks Madras HC

Why can’t govt provide gender-neutral toilets? asks Madras HC

    [ad_1]

The Tamil Nadu government was asked by the Madras High Court to respond to a plea seeking the unavailability of gender-neutral toilets for transgender persons in the state.

The court was hearing a petition filed by a transgender person who demanded the state government be proactive in providing gender-neutral toilets at public places such as bus stops, railway stations, airports etc.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that while the government has allowed non-binary persons and transgenders to use toilets according to their self-identified gender, the ground reality is they face abuse and harassment.

When the bench asked why is there no provision as the demand seems to be legitimate, the state counsel replied that constructing such toilets will take time.

The bench even pointed out that there are no such toilets in the high court premises also and suggested the conversion of existing toilets into gender-neutral ones.

“We do not have a gender-neutral toilet even in our High Court premises. While such toilets must be constructed, in the meantime, if some of the existing public toilets are reserved to be used only by trans persons, their problem can be solved. There are so many public toilets for the physically disabled that lie unused or locked. Why don’t you reserve some of them for trans persons, and convert them into gender-neutral ones?” the bench said

UNICEF calls for protecting Palestine children amid increased violence

    [ad_1]

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed concern about the recent escalation of violence, which left many children dead and injured in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, UNICEF stated that since the beginning of 2023, seven Palestinian children have been killed, and many have been injured or affected by the cycle of violence, expressing fear of the current situation in the occupied territories.

UNICEF stressed “the right of all children to enjoy special protection under international human rights law,” and said, “All their rights, including the right to life and protection, must be preserved at all times.”

UNICEF said children continue to pay the highest price for violence.

UNICEF stressed that “violence is never a solution, and all forms of violence against children are unacceptable and this must end.”

In this context, it called on all parties to “stop the escalation, exercise maximum restraint, and refrain from using violence, especially against children, in accordance with international law.”

  • ‘Punjab completely ignored in the Union Budget,’ says Bhagwant Mann

‘Punjab completely ignored in the Union Budget,’ says Bhagwant Mann

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Ruling Aam Aadmi Party, opposition Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal on Wednesday slammed the Union Budget, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and State Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema saying the state has been completely ignored in it.

Mann said that first, on Republic Day, the state’s tableau “was kept out of the parade,” now Punjab has been “completely ignored” in the Union Budget, as he criticised the Centre for presenting a budget that was “anti-Punjab, anti-people, anti-farmers and directionless.”

“Don’t understand what revenge they are taking from Punjabis,” he said.

Cheema also said, “I think Punjab has been completely ignored in this budget.”

Punjab’s farmers and youths have been left disappointed and there is nothing in the budget for the common masses, Cheema told reporters here.

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring dubbed the budget “anti-poor” and “anti-people” while Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal said it had failed farmers, ruralites, poor, and the youth.

Mann said the Centre in its budget shortchanged the sacrifices made by hardworking people of the state.

“It is shameful that going by its myopic mindset the Union government has completely ignored the state thereby bringing a huge disrespect to countless sacrifices made by the brave and hardworking Punjabis in pre- and post-independent era,” an official statement quoted Mann as saying.

He said that all “genuine demands of Punjab have been blatantly ignored and state figures nowhere in the Union budget.”

He said that being a border state, they had demanded Rs 1,000 crore for the modernisation of the BSF and state Police from Centre, which, he said, was necessary to combat the smuggling of drugs and weapons from across the border especially through the hi-tech drones.

The Union government, instead, gave the cold shoulder to this demand, he said.

He said that during the pre-budget meetings the state had flagged the need to start Vande Bharat trains from Amritsar and Bathinda to Delhi, but this demand too was completely ignored, along with another demand of connecting all five ‘Takhts’ of the Sikhs through rail route.

Mann alleged that the budget has exposed the “anti-farmers stance of the Modi government” and added the government has run away from giving remunerative MSP on crops to farmers which, he said, was very unfortunate.

The Chief Minister said that his government had been pursuing the Centre to extend Rs 1,500 crore financial assistance for the farmers, but that too failed to materialise.

He said that though the Scheduled Tribes have been offered various facilities in budgets, the Scheduled Castes and Backward classes “have been completely ignored.”

He cautioned the Union government “to stop playing with fire by ignoring the state on key issues.”

“India cannot be imagined without Punjab and the BJP-led Union government’s attempt to ignore the contribution of Punjab and Punjabis will not be tolerated,” he said, as he called Punjab the grain bowl of the country.

Warring said the budget has actually turned out to be a “classic jumla” of the BJP government at the Centre.

He also alleged it was “an anti-poor and anti-people budget with key focus on increasing income of corporations only.”

Senior Congress leader and Punjab’s Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said there is nothing in the budget for the farmers and also “no legal guarantee for the MSP as expected by the farmers all across India.”

SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said farmers were promised that their agriculture income would be doubled, “but far from doing anything to realise this goal, the government has not been able to ensure procurement of all food grains on minimum support price.”

Speaking about the government thrust on millets, Badal said this would succeed only if all millet crops were procured as per remunerative MSP.

  • Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister welcomes Union Budget’s proposals

Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister welcomes Union Budget’s proposals

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister B Rajendranath Reddy on Wednesday welcomed the Union Budget hailing it as an appropriate one in the current times after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thanking the Centre for accepting Andhra Pradesh’s suggestions during the pre-budget meetings, Reddy said the state along with its people appreciate the increase in the Income Tax rebate slabs.

He said the Central government’s initiative of setting up an Urban Infrastructure Development Fund is one of the suggestions made by Andhra Pradesh.

Reddy further said the reduction in the excise duty on aqua feed is one of the suggestions made by the state that was accepted by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Increasing PM Awaas Yojana allotments by 60 percent, providing importance to new railway lines, allocation of Rs 10 lakh crore to infrastructure creation, setting up 175 new nursing colleges and opening new digital libraries are some of the initiatives that would benefit Andhra Pradesh, he further said.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, in a statement, described the Union Budget as a progressive one and said the ruling YSRCP MPs failed in putting pressure on the Centre for granting more allocation to the state.
