  • Pakistan releases 120 illegal Afghan nationals: Taliban

Pakistan releases 120 illegal Afghan nationals: Taliban

    [ad_1]

Sindh: Amid the relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan deteriorating, the Islamabad government released thousands of undocumented detained Afghan nationals from Sindh province, reported Khaama Press.

The Taliban-ruled Afghanistan embassy in Islamabad had announced the release of 120 Afghan nationals who had previously been imprisoned in Sindh. It tweeted that some 130 Afghan detainees were released on Tuesday. As per this announcement, more Afghan citizens will be released in the coming days.

Earlier the embassy had announced the release of 1300 Afghan refugees had been released from Pakistani prisons.

According to Pakistani officials, during a special operation, police detained more than 1200 Afghan nationals including women and children across Pakistan due to not having legal residential permits (visas), and put them behind bars in the recent past, the Khaama Press report said.

The Afghan Embassy in Pakistan have confirmed that nearly 1500 undocumented Afghan refugees are still in prisons in Pakistan, and efforts are underway for their release. The report quoted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) report, which said that some 1.3 million legal Afghan refugees are currently residing in Pakistan, however, it is estimated that thousands of illegal Afghan migrants are also living in different parts of Pakistan.

Notably, this comes after the charges affairs (diplomatic representative of state) of Taliban ruled Afghanistan embassy in Islamabad, Sardar Ahmad Shakib, has asked the Pakistani government to stop arresting Afghan citizens residing in Pakistan. More than 1,000 Afghans are imprisoned in Pakistan, Shakib said.

“1,050 Afghan citizens are in Pakistan’s prisons and efforts are underway to release them and we called on the Pakistan government to stop arresting Afghan citizens,” Shakib added. The relatives of those arrested said their family members are in bad condition in Pakistan’s prisons.

An Afghan national said: “It has been three months since the government of Pakistan arrested our family members. We ask the Pakistan government to release them.”

“It has been five months since the Pakistani government arrested my 17-year-old brother, and they didn’t release him,” another Afghan national said. “We ask Pakistan to release Afghan citizens immediately because according to international conventions, no country has the right to arrest refugees,” said Asifa Stanikzai, a refugees’ rights activist.

After the Taliban took over Afghanistan, last year, several civilians fled to different countries in order to seek refuge.

Some of them also went to Pakistan for shelter but instead of giving attention, Pakistan took action against Afghani migrants.

Most of the immigrants were women and children. Among them, some women are sick and some women are expecting mothers. These medical facilities are inadequate. A few women have given birth to children in prison and cannot access medical care.

Meanwhile, in the Pakistan’s National Assembly, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah admitted the belief that the TTP, formally called the Tehreek-e-Taliban-e-Pakistan, is an umbrella organization of various Islamist armed militant groups operating along the Afghan-Pakistani border. would lay down their arms and submit to the law was mistaken, as per Geo News.

  • Cypriot President urges viable solution to Cyprus problem

Cypriot President urges viable solution to Cyprus problem

    [ad_1]

Athens: Nicos Anastasiades, outgoing President of Cyprus, urged a functional and viable solution to the Cyprus problem during his visit here on Wednesday.

Anastasiades, who is not a candidate in the presidential elections this Sunday, thanked Greece for its steady support to efforts to resolve the long-standing problem.

“I think we have adequately shielded Cyprus, so that it can negotiate a solution that is functional and viable,” he said during his meeting with Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the country’s national news agency AMNA reported.

Nicosia sought a solution that would be beneficial to both the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot communities, “thus contributing to peace prevailing,” he said.

Cyprus was partitioned when Turkey sent troops to intervene in the island’s northern part in 1974 in response to a coup staged by the military rulers of Greece at the time, Xinhua news agency reported.

Several UN-led efforts to negotiate an agreement for the divided island have been inconclusive to date.

The two leaders also visited Mati, a coastal resort near Athens that was scorched by a wildfire in July 2018, which left more than 100 dead and hundreds homeless.

Cyprus has donated 10 million euros ($10.91 million) for the construction of some 100 apartments, as well as the creation of a park. Works are still underway there.

“Working closely together in solidarity we support each other,” Anastasiades said.

Mitsotakis thanked him “for this gesture, which contributes to efforts to heal the wounds caused by this huge catastrophe”. (1 euro = $1.09)

  • US Justice Department conducts ‘planned search’ of Biden’s home

US Justice Department conducts ‘planned search’ of Biden’s home

    [ad_1]

Washington: The US Department of Justice (DOJ) conducted a “planned search” of President Joe Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Wednesday.

“Today, with the President’s full support and cooperation, the DOJ is conducting a planned search of his home in Rehoboth, Delaware,” Biden’s personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, said in a statement obtained by US media outlets.

“Under DOJ’s standard procedures, in the interests of operational security and integrity, it sought to do this work without advance public notice, and we agreed to cooperate,” Bauer wrote.

“The search today is a further step in a thorough and timely DOJ process we will continue to fully support and facilitate,” the attorney said.

“We will have further information at the conclusion of today’s search.”

The DOJ conducted a search of Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, on January 20 after documents with classified markings were also found at the Biden Penn Centre in Washington, D.C., in November 2022, Xinhua news agency reported.

DOJ special counsels are separately investigating the handling of classified documents by Biden and former US President Donald Trump.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence told Congress last week that classified documents had been found at his home in Indiana.

The US National Archives and Records Administration has recently requested that former Presidents and Vice-Presidents “conduct an assessment” to determine whether they have any classified materials in their possession.

Under the Presidential Records Act, all US Presidents’ and Vice-Presidents’ records, including any classified documents, must be turned over to archives by the ends of their terms.

  • Germany, Italy close Istanbul consulates over security concerns in Turkey

Germany, Italy close Istanbul consulates over security concerns in Turkey

    [ad_1]

Istanbul: Germany and Italy have joined the growing list of Western countries having their consulates in Istanbul temporarily closed over security concerns, as Turkey is on high alert against possible retaliation for Quran burning incidents in several European countries.

The German Embassy in the capital Ankara announced on social media that the consulate in Istanbul was closed on Wednesday for security concerns. Meanwhile, the Italian Consulate General in Istanbul issued a statement on its website saying the consulate would be closed on Thursday.

The first to close its consulate in Istanbul was the Netherlands, which took the move on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The recent demonstrations in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands, where a Quran was burned and torn up respectively, can evoke anti-Western feelings and lead to demonstrations and protests,” the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a travel advisory to Turkey on Monday.

“There is also an increased threat of an attack against Western targets, diplomatic representations, and places of worship, particularly in Istanbul,” it warned.

Britain issued a similar travel advisory on Tuesday, warning of “a heightened threat of terrorist attacks against churches, synagogues, embassies, consulates, and other places frequented by Westerners in Istanbul”.

As a precaution, the British Consulate General in Istanbul has been closed to the public since Tuesday.

France and the US have also issued travel warnings for Turkey following the Quran burning incidents.

On Monday, the Turkish Interior Ministry announced that it had raised its security measures to the highest level against possible Islamic State and al-Qaida retaliation.

“Evaluations were made against all possible provocations, and our security measures were maximised after the sinister actions against our holy book, the Quran, in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Denmark,” read a statement by the Ministry.
