  • AAP MP Sanjay Singh demands confiscation of Adani’s passport

AAP MP Sanjay Singh demands confiscation of Adani’s passport

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh on Thursday said that he had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded to confiscate the passport of industrialist Gautam Adani.

“I have written a letter to PM, ED, and CBI demanding the confiscation of Adani’s passport, or else If he also flees from the country like other industrialists and capitalists, then crores of people of this country will be left with nothing,” Singh told ANI.

Further launching his tirade against the Adani Enterprises Ltd chairman Gautam Adani, the AAP leader said that the former’s “mountain of lies and fraud is crumbling like a pack of cards”.

“Adani’s mountain of lies and fraud is crumbling like a pack of cards. Crores of investors in the country are worried. Those who have invested in LIC, and SBI because both of them have given loans worth crores of rupees. The Prime Minister should come forward and address the issue. The Finance Minister should tell what the RBI, ED, and CBI are doing. Why is the government silent on such huge corruption? FPO is just the beginning, the mountain of lies will fall,” he added.

Singh also gave a suspension of business notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar demanding a discussion on the allegations of financial irregularities and fraud against the Adani group.

Serving the notice under Rule 267, Singh mentioned that a case of manipulation of shares, financial irregularities and fraud on a large scale by the ‘Adani Group’ has come to the fore. “These allegations are so serious that Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) which holds the shares of Adani Group’s stocks worth more than Rs 81 thousand crores had a loss of about Rs 16,580 crores,” he said.

Quoting the Hindenburg Research Report, he said in the notice that crores of rupees of many public sector banks of the country including the State Bank of India (SBI) are at stake as the Adani Group has currently a debt of more than Rs 2.2 lakh crore.

“According to the report, seven listed companies of the Adani Group have been over-evaluated for more than 85 per cent. These companies have taken loans by mortgaging their shares on a large scale. There have been several cases registered against the members of Adani’s family and his group officials,” the notice said.

He further mentioned that many government institutions including LIC, and SBI continued to invest in Adani Group despite the latter’s role in serious offences like money laundering, and theft of taxpayers’ money. Even the grant of a Follow-on Public Offer (FPO) worth Rs 20,000 crore to the Adani enterprises and the nod for the demand of investor’s money without the completion of SEBI’s investigation also hints at wider economic impropriety, he claimed.

“Taking cognizance of such a serious matter, the sooner the investigation is started, the sooner the interests of investors and the general public can be protected, otherwise, it will destroy the lives of crores of Indians who invest their money for savings in companies like LIC and SBI. Considering the above critical circumstances, you are humbly requested to postpone other works of the House under Rule 267 and discuss this very serious matter related to the public interest in the House,” he said in the notice.

  • Imp of personal savings ‘jettisoned’ in ‘hullabalo’ over old, new tax regimes: Chidambaram

Imp of personal savings ‘jettisoned’ in ‘hullabalo’ over old, new tax regimes: Chidambaram

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday said that in the “hullabaloo” over the old and the new tax regimes, the importance of personal savings in a developing country has been “jettisoned”.

The former Union finance minister asserted that in the absence of a state-provided safety net for the vast majority of people, personal savings is the only social security.

The mystery of the New Tax Regime is unravelling, he said and pointed to the analysis and the tables in major newspapers on Thursday.

“If you are a taxpayer, don’t rush to conclusions. Do your math, consult a chartered accountant,” Chidambaram said in a series of tweets.

“My regret is, in this hullabaloo about OTR (old tax regime) and NTR (old tax regime), the importance of personal savings in a developing country has been jettisoned,” he said.

Chidambaram on Wednesday claimed that the Union Budget has “betrayed” the hopes of a vast majority of Indians and shows how far removed the government is from the people and their concerns about life, livelihood and the growing inequality between the rich and the poor.

At a press conference at the Congress headquarters here, he had termed the budget “callous” and claimed that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has not mentioned unemployment, poverty, inequality or equity anywhere in her Budget speech.

  • ‘Turkey won’t approve Sweden’s NATO bid as long as Quran-burning protests continue’

‘Turkey won’t approve Sweden’s NATO bid as long as Quran-burning protests continue’

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkey will not approve Sweden’s bid to join NATO as long as it continues to allow Quran-burning protests, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, adding that his country looks positively on Finland’s application for membership of the military alliance.

“Sweden! Don’t even bother to try. We cannot say ‘yes’ to your joining NATO as long as you continue to allow burning and tearing of my sacred book, the Quran,” Erdogan said in an address to Parliament on Wednesday.

“Our view on Finland is positive, but not for Sweden,” he added.

Ankara’s backlash against Stockholm’s NATO bid comes after the latter’s permission for recent protests involving Quran burning in the Nordic country, as well as the issue of extradition of people affiliated with anti-Turkey groups.

The Swedish police allowed a protest in which a far-right politician burned a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm in January.

Sweden and Finland submitted their formal requests to join NATO in May 2022, which were initially opposed by Turkey, an alliance member, citing their support for anti-Ankara Kurdish organisations and political dissidents.

A month later, Turkey, Sweden and Finland reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) ahead of the NATO summit held in Madrid.

Under the MoU, Turkey agreed to lift its veto on the NATO bids by Finland and Sweden, which in return pledged to support Ankara’s fight against terrorism and address its “pending deportation or extradition requests of terror suspects expeditiously and thoroughly”.

The Turkish parliament has not ratified the Nordic countries’ NATO bids so far, citing that they have yet to meet Ankara’s requests.

  • N.Korea warns of ‘toughest reaction’ to US military drills with S.Korea

N.Korea warns of ‘toughest reaction’ to US military drills with S.Korea

    [ad_1]

Seoul: North Korea said on Thursday it will take the “toughest reaction” to the US move to expand joint military exercises with South Korea.

The North’s warning came US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Seoul earlier this week for talks with his South Korean counterpart and said there would be more deployments of strategic assets, including F-22 and F-35 jets, to Seoul in order to deter Pyongyang’s evolving military threats, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry claimed the US has been driving the security situation on the Korean Peninsula toward an “extreme red-line” and is pushing to spur further tensions through joint military drills of larger scale and scope with South Korea.

“This is a vivid expression of the US dangerous scenario which will result in turning the Korean Peninsula into a huge war arsenal and a more critical war zone,” the Ministry said in a statement carried by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

North Korea will “take the toughest reaction” to any military action by the US under the principle of “nuke for nuke and an all-out confrontation for an all-out confrontation”, it added.

The North said it is ready to counter any military challenges from the US with the “most overwhelming nuclear force,” while stressing it is not interested in any dialogue with Washington as long as the latter pursues a “hostile policy”.

Earlier on Thursday, South Korea and the US staged combined air drills, involving B-1B strategic bombers, as well as F-22 and F-35B stealth fighters, from the US Air Force, in a show of Washington’s “will and capabilities” to provide credible extended deterrence against North Korea’s military threats.

North Korea launched around 70 ballistic missiles last year alone, the most in a single year, amid persistent speculation it may conduct a nuclear test in the near future.

The North’s leader Kim Jong-un called for an “exponential” increase in its nuclear arsenal and the need to mass-produce tactical nuclear weapons at a key party meeting held late last year.

North Korea is likely to hold a military parade on February 8 to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of its armed forces.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad delegation heads to Egypt amid tensions

    [ad_1]

Gaza: A delegation of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militant group will head to Egypt on Thursday for dialogue on defusing the escalating tensions between Israel and Palestine, an official said.

Dawood Shehab, a PIJ leader from Gaza, told reporters that the group’s secretary-general Ziad Al-Nakhala, at the invitation of Egypt, will lead the delegation to discuss the escalating violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem with Egyptian security intelligence officials.

The meeting comes after a series of deadly incidents in the region.

On January 26, Israeli forces raided the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied northern West Bank and killed nine Palestinians and wounded 16 others.

A day later, a gunman opened fire on people near a synagogue at a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem, killing at least seven people.

Egypt has been mediating between Israel and the Palestinians and brokered several ceasefire agreements to end hostilities in the region.

Union Budget was discriminatory towards Telangana: Keshava Rao

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In response to the Budget allocation to Telangana by the centre, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP K Keshava Rao said that they would raise the issue in parliament.

The BRS MP further went on to say that the budget was ‘anti-farmer’ and ‘anti-poor’ with a focus only on poll-bound states like Karnataka.

The leader along with Nama Nageshwara Rao claimed that none of their demands was considered in the budget even after the state government sought funds and project sanctions.

“The budget was discriminatory towards Telangana. There was no mention of farmers, including minimum support price or our Kaleshwaram project. Also, the BJP-ruled, poll-bound state bagged 5,300 crore,” Nama Nageshwara Rao said.
