  • January ‘deadliest’ month in Pakistan since July 2018

January ‘deadliest’ month in Pakistan since July 2018

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Since July 2019, January 2023 has been the deadliest month in Pakistan as 134 people lost their lives, a 139 percent spike, and 254 others were injured in at least 44 terror attacks across the country, according to statistics.

The figures released by the Islamabad-based think-tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) revealed the pattern of terrorist attacks continued in the new year, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remaining one of the worst-hit regions, reports Dawn news.

Although the number of terror incidents slightly declined in January, the fatalities increased by 139 percent, mainly due to the January suicide blast at a mosque in Peshawar which resulted in the death of 101 people.

In January, two suicide bombings were recorded — one in Peshawar and the other one in the Khyber tribal district.

At the same time, the security forces foiled a number of attacks by arresting at least 52 suspected militants, mainly from Punjab, and killing 40 suspects, mostly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa not only the militant attacks increased from 17 to 27, but the resultant deaths also increased from 17 to 116 compared to December 2022, Dawn news quoted the think-tank as saying.

At least 232 people were also injured in the province, most of them police officials wounded in the Peshawar blast.

However, militant attacks declined in Balochistan during January, where only nine militant attacks were reported compared to 17 attacks in December 2022.

The resultant deaths also dropped from 14 to 7 and the number of wounded declined from 48 to 20. Bolan, Panjgur, Kalat, Khuzdar, Mastung, and Quetta were the affected districts during the month.

Meanwhile, in Punjab, four militant attacks were reported in which three security forces personnel were killed while two low-profile attacks were reported in Sindh in which one person died, Dawn news reported.

The most high-profile attack was carried out in Mianwali’s Makarwal police station by “around two dozen TTP militants” on January 31.

The attack was repulsed, but it showed the numerical strength and ability of banned outfits to mobilize armed militants across the KP and Punjab border.

One attack each was reported in Rawalpindi, DG Khan, and Khanewal, the report claimed.

  • Living costs increase for all New Zealand household groups

Living costs increase for all New Zealand household groups

    [ad_1]

Wellington: Soaring prices continued to affect all household groups in New Zealand in the 12 months to December 2022, the country’s statistics department said on Thursday.

The cost of living for the average household, as measured by the household living-costs price indexes (HLPIs), increased by 8.2 percent in the 12 months to December 2022, Xinhua news agency reported citing Stats NZ as saying.

“Higher prices for housing, food, and transport were the main contributors to the increase across all household groups,” consumer prices manager James Mitchell said.

Each quarter, the household living-costs price indexes measure how inflation affects 13 different household groups, plus an all-households group. The consumer price index (CPI) measures how inflation affects New Zealand as a whole, Mitchell said.

He added that the all-households group or the average household represents all private New Zealand-resident households.

Annual inflation, as measured by the CPI, was 7.2 percent in the December 2022 quarter, while annual inflation for the average household as measured by the HLPIs was 8.2 percent.

The two measures of inflation are typically used for different purposes.

A key use of the CPI is monetary policy, while the HLPIs is to provide insight into the cost of living for different household groups, Mitchell said.

One important difference between the two is the treatment of housing. The CPI captures the cost of building a new home, while the HLPIs capture mortgage interest payments, he said.

In the HLPIs, interest payments increased by 45 per cent for the average household in the year to December 2022. In the CPI, the cost of building a new home increased by 14 percent in the same period, statistics show.

Meanwhile, the official cash rate, used by the Reserve Bank to control inflation, increased from 0.75 per cent in December 2021 to 4.25 per cent in December 2022.

“This is reflected in the HLPIs by higher costs for interest payments,” Mitchell said.

This is the highest annual increase of all the household groups. The main contributor to this was higher interest payments because the highest-spending households spend more of their expenditure on interest payments than other household groups, he said.

Highest-spending households’ cost of living increased by 9.4 percent in the year to December 2022.

The cost of living for lowest-spending households was 7.1 percent in the 12 months to December 2022, statistics show.

This was driven by higher prices for rent, grocery food, interest payments, and fruit and vegetables, Mitchell said.

“Lowest-spending households spend proportionally more on grocery food, fruit and vegetables, and meat, poultry and fish, and proportionally less on restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food than the average household,” he said.

For the lowest-spending households, overall food prices increased by 11 percent.

Grocery food prices increased 10 percent, and fruit and vegetable prices increased 21 percent, according to Stats NZ.

BRS puts up poster targeting Modi, Centre over budget for Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Taking a shot at the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the 2023-24 union budget that was released on Wednesday, the ruling BRS here put up posters targeting the Centre.

Targeting Modi and the Centre, a big poster stating ‘TELANGANA GETS ZERO IN UNION BUDGET’ was put up in Hyderabad on Thursday. Images of the same were shared on social media sites by Bharata Rashtra Samithi (BRS) members in the city.

BRS workers last year did something similar as well, when they put up ‘money heist’ posters targeting Narendra Modi when he had come to Hyderabad during the BJP’s national executive. The BRS has upped its social media game them by even putting up pink balloons near Modi’s public meeting venue.

As part of its ‘money heist’ campaign, BRS workers held hoardings and protests silently, which diverted attention of many on social media away from the BJP’s national executive, which was in the spotlight last year in July.

On the final day of the BJP’s national executive, just hours ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s rally at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, pink balloons with the BRS slogan ‘Jai Jai KCR’ were positioned outside the venue, such that those were prominently visible from the venue of BJP’s National Executive meeting.

IT rebate up to Rs 7 lakh of no use to Telangana: Kavitha

After the union budget was released, BRS MLC K Kavitha Kalvakuntla on Wednesday said that the income tax rebate on income up to Rs 7 lakhs (as announced by union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman) in the new tax regime is of no use to the people of Telangana.

“This budget mathematical confirmation of the failure of Modi govt. This seems like a budget for few states. We hoped tax rebate of up to Rs 10 lakhs. In Telangana, we pay good salaries to people so this rebate is of no use to us,” she said speaking to ANI.

  • Azad calls on Shah, takes up land eviction issue in J&K

Azad calls on Shah, takes up land eviction issue in J&K

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman, Democratic Azad Party (DAP) met Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to take up the land eviction issue, said the party on Thursday.

During the meeting, which took place on Wednesday, Azad apprised Shah of the situation of serious ‘unrest and uncertainty’ prevailing among the public following the circular of eviction issued by the UT administration, a statement by the DAP mentioned.

The circular directs all Deputy Commissioners to remove encroachments on state land, including Roshni and Kacharai.

“Ghulam Nabi Azad requested the Home Minister that the majority of occupants holding small lands and have constructed houses for the last few decades are migrants and are mostly victims of militancy, as well as victims of abnormal situations arising from time to time, being a border state.

“The origin of these shelters/residential houses on state-kacharai and Roshni lands appears to have taken place first in 1947 and then in the 1962 and 1971 war period, and subsequently during the post-militancy period. This is also a fact that the governments provided road connectivity, supply of water and electricity, schools, anganwadi centres and other welfare schemes, including health related facilities to these houses from time to time which implicitly indicates that successive state governments in a way have recognised these constructions.”

The statement said Azad requested the home minister that at least poor people having small holdings of land and houses should be spared from the eviction drive.

“The Home Minister assured Azad that small land holders will not be harassed. It is worthwhile to mention here that two weeks earlier Azad had taken up the same issue with Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha also, who too had assured to do the needful with cogent land policy to small land holders sympathetically,” the statement added.

  • Sharavathi project: Fresh bid to get land ownership rights for displaced families

Sharavathi project: Fresh bid to get land ownership rights for displaced families

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: A high-level committee on Thursday decided to approach the Centre afresh with a plea to denotify about 9,600 acres of forest land in favour of 11,000 to 12,000 families displaced due to the Sharavathi river project in Shivamogga district of Karnataka and rehabilitated there decades ago.

The panel is headed by State Home Minister Araga Jnanendra and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, both of whom hail from the district.

After a meeting here, Yediyurappa told reporters that a fresh proposal would be sent to the Centre with a request to denotify the forest land in favour of those displaced families who have not yet got rights over the land.

“We had called on the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and apprised him of the predicament of nearly 11,000 to 12,000 displaced people (families). He has asked us to survey the land and send a proposal,” Yeddyurappa said.

He said those dwelling on the land have not got ownership rights and it is akin to being landless.

“The district administration has completed the survey and prepared a proposal to give ownership on 9,600 acres of land. We will send the proposal today itself,” Yeddyurappa said.

Shivamogga MP and Yediyurappa’s son B Y Raghavendra, legislators, and senior officials attended the meeting.

India’s IT collection cost lowest in the world: Hyderabad Commissioner

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The income tax collection cost that the Income Tax (IT) department incurs in India is the lowest in the world, said Shishir Agarwal, chief commissioner of IT (Hyderabad) here on Thursday. He added that India spends 57 paise per Rs 100 of tax collected.

The IT commissioner added that the United Kingdom spends spends 73 paise, Japan 174 paise, Germany 135 paise, Canada 150 paise, and France 111 paise for every Rs 100 IT collected respectively. “The USA is the only country that spends less than us,” stated Mr Agarwal, while addressing a Seminar hosted by the FTCCI  on ‘Post Union Budget 2023-2024—Implication for Trade and Industries’ in Hyderabad.

“I come from a department which people love to hate.  No one wants us to visit them in our official capacity.  But, we are doing really well.  The numbers reflect our performance.  For the year 2021-2022, we have collected an all time record tax. The net direct tax collections (income tax and corporate tax) reached an all time high of Rs 14.09 lakh,” he said, according to a press release from FTCII.

The IT commissioner in Hyderabad also added that 65% of IT returns in India filed were processed and refunds were made within 24 hours of filing. “We have moved to a faceless tax process, which is the first in the world.  We understand tax payers’ aspirations and bring tailor-made initiatives for the benefit of tax payers for a better tomorrow. India’s time has come now,” Shishir Agarwal opined.

Speaking about the Union Budget released a day earlier, the Chief Commissioner of IT in Hyderabad called it ‘progressive’. Mr. Anil Agarwal, FTCCI president, said that union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman came out with a “people centric budget”. Over 200 professionals, experts from different walks of life attended the seminar.
