  • Intellectuals hold sit-in near Amartya Sen’s Santiniketan house for second day

Intellectuals hold sit-in near Amartya Sen’s Santiniketan house for second day

    [ad_1]

Santiniketan: Intellectuals held a sit-in near the ancestral house of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen here on Saturday protesting against the notice by Visva-Bharati university to the economist to vacate 0.13 acres (5,500 sq ft) of the total 1.38 acres allegedly held by him ‘illegally’ or face eviction.

Rabindranath Tagore’s songs of protest were sung during the sit-in.

Among the intellectuals who took part in the protest, held for the second consecutive day, were film maker Goutam Ghosh, painters Suvaprasanna and Jogen Choudhury.

    MS Education Academy

In another podium, set up near by, leaders of the ruling TMC sat in protest. They included state minister Chandranath Sinha, Suri MLA and Birbhum zilla parishad president Bikash Roy Choudhury, Labhpur MLA Abhijit Sinha and Nanoor MLA Bidhan Majhi.
Scores of party activists too sat with them.

The TMC is opposing the Visva-Bharati notice to Sen tooth and nail.

“I have come all the way from Kolkata to voice my protest against the harassment and insult to an internationally respected economist like Amartya Sen, who is among the country’s pride. The way his land issue is being treated by Visva-Bharati authorities is unfortunate as the matter is sub-judice,” Ghosh said.

“This is not the Visva-Bharati we have known. We demand that Amartya babu should not be subjected to such treatment any more,” the filmmaker told PTI over phone.

Sinha said people of Bengal are aghast over the treatment meted out to Sen by the university and the “democratic protest” against it will continue for the next few days.

The protests followed sit-ins by the ‘Committee for Protection of Social Dignity’, which too was held in front of of Pratichi on the same issue on Friday. Tagore’s famed drama ‘Rakta Karabi’ was staged as a mark of protest and local people and Ashramites of Visva-Bharati protested by singing the Bard’s songs.

‘Rakta Karabi’ is a powerful and poignant play where commercial expoitation, oppression, power, love and obsession operate on different levels and manifest themselves in different shades.

Visva Bharati spokesperson Mahua Banerjee said, “The matter is in the court. We respect its order and the law of the land. We have lodged a complaint to the competent authorities.

“Since Section 145 is in force to maintain peace and tranquility in the area near Pratichi, how is such a kind of gathering permissible?”… This will be our response regarding the activities (by the protestors) since May 5, 2023,” she said.

Set up in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore, Visva-Bharati was declared a university in 1951 and is West Bengal’s only central university. The prime minister is its chancellor.

Calcutta High Court on May 4 gave an interim stay against an eviction order of Visva-Bharati asking Sen to vacate 0.13 acres at his ancestral Santiniketan residence by May 6. An appeal for a stay on possible eviction was fixed for hearing later in the month at a court in Suri.

Visva-Bharati had sent the eviction notice to Sen on April 19, asking him to vacate 13 decimal of the 1.38 acres land of his residence within May 6. The university has been claiming that Sen is in possession of 1.38 acre of land in the Santiniketan campus, which is in excess of his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres.

The economist in his petition to the court said that the 1.38 acres plot on which ‘Pratichi’ stands was given on lease for 99 years to his father Ashutosh Sen in October 1943 by the then Visva-Bharati general secretary Rathindranath Tagore, Gurudev’s son.

Sen had earlier moved a court in Suri against the eviction notice, but the court set May 15 as the date of hearing well after the university’s deadline to vacate the land.

  • ‘Grand tamasha’ Congress describes PM Modi’s Bengaluru roadshow

‘Grand tamasha’ Congress describes PM Modi’s Bengaluru roadshow

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “master of distortion” and accused him of caring only for his “grand tamasha” and not the inconvenience caused by his 26-km roadshow in Bengaluru.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged ambulances were stuck on roads due to the chaos caused by the roadshow and said that Modi should cancel the second part of the roadshow slated for Sunday.

With just four days to go for the Karnataka assembly polls, Modi held a massive roadshow from Someshwar Bhavan RBI Ground in Bengaluru South to Malleshwaram’s Sankey Tank.

    MS Education Academy

The prime minister will hold another roadshow on Sunday morning.

“The Master Of Distortion and Incitement (‘Abuse’ No. 92??) is arriving in Bengaluru today. We already know what he’ll say to inflame prejudice and bigotry,” Ramesh said on Twitter ahead of Modi’s roadshow.

He said the prime minister will stay absolutely silent on the real issues of Karnataka like “40 per cent commission sarkar, intolerable price rise, rising unemployment, and a forever under-construction and dug-up Bengaluru”.

“This time the despair is so high that his #40km40percent roadshow over 2 days is locking up an entire city, creating chaos & uncertainty for students writing crucial exams, and felling a number of trees,” the Congress leader said.

“Have you ever seen a PM this desperate,” he asked.

After the roadshow, Ramesh said Modi should cancel its second part scheduled for Sunday.

    “Ambulances stuck, chaos on road!

“If the PM has any shame left or even an iota of concern for the people of Bengaluru, he would immediately cancel part 2 of the #40km40percent roadshow tomorrow. But we all know that all he cares for is his Grand Tamasha,” Ramesh tweeted.

He also shared a video of a traffic jam.

In another tweet, he said, “Jawans have been martyred, Wrestlers are protesting, Manipur is burning And all the Prime Minister can think of is rallying to save the BJP from a humiliating defeat in Karnataka. Pathetic priorities!”

Modi’s three-hour roadshow traversed through parts of south and central Bengaluru, touching about a dozen assembly segments. He waved at large crowds that gathered on both sides of the route.

Later, he addressed a rally in Badami and said the overwhelming response he received in Bengaluru during the roadshow made him believe that it is the people who are contesting the Karnataka elections on behalf of the BJP.

He said that the love and affection he received in Bengaluru was “unparalleled”.

Efforts on to evacuate Bengal people stranded in strife-torn Manipur: Mamata

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said efforts are underway to evacuate people of the state stranded in violence-hit Manipur.

Expressing concern over the violent clashes in the northeastern state, which have claimed the lives of 54 people, Banerjee urged Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi to monitor the situation and make efforts to evacuate the stranded people.

“Deeply anguished by the kind of messages and SOS we are receiving from Manipur. I am concerned about the safety of the people of Manipur and others hailing from different parts of the country, now stranded there,” she tweeted.

    MS Education Academy

“Govt of Bengal is committed to stand by the people and has decided to make every effort to evacuate people stranded there in coordination with the government of Manipur. The chief secretary has been directed to monitor the entire process, to help people in distress and despair. We are with the people at all times. Urge everyone to maintain peace,” she added.

Banerjee also provided helpline numbers for those seeking assistance.

The total number of people from West Bengal stranded in Manipur is not currently available.

The death toll in the ethnic violence which has engulfed Manipur increased to 54, officials said even as unofficial sources placed the figure at several scores dead and more than 150 injured.

Meanwhile, life limped back to a wary normalcy in Imphal Valley as shops and markets reopened and cars started plying the roads.

Violence first erupted in Torbung area in Churachandpur district of Manipur during the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3 to protest the demand of Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The march was organised by tribals — including Nagas and Kukis — after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Meitei community.

During the march in Torbung, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, police said.

Multiple sources said the fighting between communities had left several scores of people dead and nearly a hundred injured. However, the police were unwilling to confirm this.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of the population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals, who include Nagas and Kukis, account for another 40 per cent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts which surround the valley.

  • Church of North India in Delhi to spread message of Yamuna rejuvenation

Church of North India in Delhi to spread message of Yamuna rejuvenation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Priests of some churches in Delhi have decided to join hands to aid the efforts towards rejuvenation of the Yamuna river, following an appeal by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, officials said on Saturday.

This will prove to be a shot in the arm for the mission to clean the Yamuna as priests of several temples and imams of mosques in the city have already joined the initiative by the LG to help clean the river and remove garbage dumps in Delhi, they said.

The Church of North India (CNI) diocese of Delhi on Saturday issued an appeal asking all the presbyters, deacons, evangelists and ordinands to spread the message of Yamuna rejuvenation and solid waste management during the Sunday service at the churches.

    MS Education Academy

“Committed and concerted goal-oriented efforts made by Lt Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena show positive results. He has appealed to the people of Delhi as indeed the Church to support the efforts being undertaken in rejuvenating the Yamuna and flattening the shameful mountains of waste situated in the Capital,” read the appeal issued by the bishop of the diocese of Delhi Paul Swarup.

Saxena heads the high-level committees formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to deal with the issues of Yamuna pollution and solid waste management in the city.

The churches will appeal to the people to segregate dry and wet garbage, not throw waste in the Yamuna, recycle and reuse, and avoid dumping garbage in drains.

Following concerted and targeted efforts by the Delhi LG and his appeal to the people of Delhi to proactively participate in these efforts, varied groups and organisations have begun to rise to the occasion.

Imams of several mosques made similar appeals to the people during the Friday prayers.

In April, a training session chaired by the LG was conducted in which 500 temple priests were urged to act as change makers to educate people to stop dumping puja materials and other such items like idols and calendars into the Yamuna.
