Security beefed up after SKM announces nationwide protests in support of wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Security was beefed up at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Sunday after Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) announced that it will hold nationwide protests including in Delhi in support of the protesting grapplers.

Wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for over 10 days demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh and his sacking from the post in the light of allegations of sexual harassment by the wrestlers.

According to an SKM statement on Saturday, on May 7, several leaders of the organisation from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will visit the protest site at Jantar Mantar and extend support to the protesting wrestlers.

Notably, SKM had spearheaded the year-long farmers’ protest on the borders of the national capital against the now-repealed farm laws.

On Friday, Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij extended his support to the protesting wrestlers near Jantar Mantar.

Speaking to ANI, the Haryana Home minister said he had complete sympathy and support for the protesting wrestlers.

He even assured the grapplers that he was willing to mediate and hold talks with the government on their behalf.

“This entire matter is now being addressed at the highest level. Since I have also been a sports minister, my sympathies and support are with the protesting wrestlers. If they want me to meditate and talk to the government, I am willing to do so,” Vij said.

Moreover, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday said the Delhi Police was conducting an unbiased investigation against the wrestling federation chief and were working to meet the demands of the protesting grapplers.

“A demand had been put forward to form a committee and a panel was constituted. Two FIRs have also been registered by Delhi Police and Supreme Court also gave its verdict. Delhi Police is conducting a fair investigation,” the Union Minister said.

The Union Minister said that free and fair elections of the Wrestling Federation of India have been taken into consideration and that the Indian Olympic Association is working towards it.

On Wednesday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha met the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar.

On April 23, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar, claiming that six women wrestlers, and a minor, filed a sexual harassment complaint against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Connaught Place Police Station but Delhi Police did not register an FIR. The protesting grapplers also demanded that the Sports Ministry make the findings of the Oversight Committee public.

Delhi Police filed two FIRs on April 28 following the notice by the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, prominent wrestlers came forward to lead a protest against the WFI chief, following which the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the formation of an ‘oversight committee’ to probe allegations against the WFI, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some coaches.

The protesting wrestlers have made it clear that they won’t move until they get justice and Brij Bhushan is removed as the WFI chief and put behind bars.

Manipur relaxes curfew in Churachandpur for few hours to allow people buy essentials

    [ad_1]

Imphal: The total curfew that prohibited the movement of any person outside their homes will be relaxed for three hours in violence-hit Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Sunday morning to allow the people to buy essential items such as medicines and food, according to a notification.

The curfew imposed under section 144 of the CrPC will be relaxed from 7 am to 10 am, it said.

It was also relaxed on Saturday for two hours from 3 pm to 5 pm.

    MS Education Academy

“With the law and order situation improving in Churachandpur district and after talks were held between the state government and various stakeholders, I’m pleased to share that the curfew will be partially relaxed as per the details shared below (sic),” Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted on Saturday night, sharing a copy of the notification.

The curfew was imposed on May 3 after violent clashes broke out between tribals and members of the majority Meitei community, which has so far displaced thousands of people and killed at least 54.

The notification issued by Churachandpur district magistrate Sharath Chandra Arroju said, “Subsequent relaxations shall be reviewed and notified based on assessment of the prevailing law and order situation.”

The clashes broke out after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the ten hill districts of the state to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribals — Nagas and Kukis — constitute another 40 percent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts.

  • Only women contingents to be part of 2024 Republic Day parade: Defence Ministry

Only women contingents to be part of 2024 Republic Day parade: Defence Ministry

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In an effort to encourage female participation in various sectors, the government has decided that the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path will see participation only by women in march pasts, tableaux and other performances.

The Defence Ministry, in this regard, has written a letter to the armed forces and other government departments associated with the parade, stating that the marching contingents, military bands accompanying the marching contingents and tableaux will have only women participants.

The letter comes as a surprise for several senior military officers and has also created confusion. Many believe that there aren’t enough women available in forces for this. The current situation is that some marching contingents consist of men only.

    MS Education Academy

Significantly, the armed forces have taken several measures, including assigning command roles to women, grooming them for future leadership roles and allowing them to join artillery regiments, to promote gender equality.

According to information, the decision to encourage women’s participation in the parade was taken during a meeting held on February 7. The meeting, chaired by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, was attended by senior representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ministry of Culture, and Ministry of Education.

About a month after the meeting, the Defence Ministry formally issued a letter to participating forces, ministries and departments on March 1.

In the letter, emphasis was laid on the role of women in the parade to be held next year.

The letter noted that after detailed deliberations, it has been decided that the contingents (marching and bands), tableaux and other displays during the parade on the Kartavya Path will have only women participants.

All the participating ministries, departments and organisations have also been asked to initiate preparations for the same and share the progress made with the Defence Ministry from time to time.

Some senior officials believe that the government will do what is practical, and for the time being it is difficult to have only female participants in all marching and band contingents.

Significantly, the marching contingents of the infantry in the Republic Day parade constitute the largest number of personnel. Officials argue that women have not yet been included in the infantry. Officers who lead marching contingents consist of personnel below officer rank (PBOR) and the Army has the PBOR cadre women personnel only in the Military Police Corps, they assert.

However, it is not that women have no representation in force or that women are marginalised. They are being assigned roles equivalent to men in all three services – they fly fighter aircraft, serve on warships, are inducted into the PBOR cadre, are eligible for permanent commission, are assigned command roles, and also women officers are undergoing training at the National Defence Academy. Despite this, infantry, tanks and combat positions still do not have that participation of women.

According to the Indian Army, Colonel Geeta Rana has recently become the first woman army officer to command an independent unit in the sensitive Ladakh region bordering China. Apart from this, for the first time, the army has deployed a woman officer Captain Shiva Chauhan in the world’s highest and coldest battlefield Siachen this year itself. The army has also deployed its largest contingent of 27 women peacekeepers to the disputed region of Abyei in Sudan.

  • Hyderabad: Fake documents used to seize 3630 sq yard waqf land in Begum Bazar

Hyderabad: Fake documents used to seize 3630 sq yard waqf land in Begum Bazar

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: During the ongoing CB-CID investigation into the destruction of Waqf properties, shocking revelations have emerged that have left even the office bearers of the Waqf Board surprised. According to reports, the board’s silence and indifference regarding waqf properties has led to damage and land grabbers are attempting to seize 3630 square yards of land in Begum Bazar Kolsawadi through fake documents.

Waqf properties are considered as the Amanah (trust) of Allah, and it has been revealed that this property was obtained through fake documents and being declared as a purchase. Despite all details and documents of this disputed land being mentioned in the gazette with the Telangana State Waqf Board, the person occupying this property is claiming that the Waqf Board excluded this property from the Waqf in 1962. This claim has surprised Waqf Board officials, as no one has the power to exclude any land or property that has been dedicated from the Waqf.

Officials have confirmed that no such letters were issued by the Waqf Board in 1962, nor were any orders issued based on such letters. However, the claim is being made based on fake letters and orders. An attempt is being made to declare the disputed land as land purchased under the contract sale deed.

    MS Education Academy

The gazette notification issued by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1985 after the Waqf survey confirms the presence of a total of 3630 square yards of land in entry number 1938. During the visit of CB-CID officials along with officials and employees of the Waqf Board, it was revealed that the property with the State Waqf Board is attached under TakiyaCharkodi and Dargah Syed Shah Bahadur Shah and Diwan Shah Wali, but some part of this property was occupied by the person who is in possession during the survey.

When asked to produce documents, the man handed over a letter dated October 25, 1962, to the office bearers, which the Board officials termed as fake, stating that the writing on the letter did not belong to the Board. Additionally, the letter was prepared in the name of Andhra Pradesh Muslim Waqf Board, which was not formed until 1969, and the letterpad has the Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board written on it, which proves the rigging in the preparation of the letter.

Begum Bazar is one of the most valuable areas in Hyderabad where property prices are skyrocketing, and the land in question is highly valuable. If the responsible Waqf Boards act immediately and take steps to protect this property, a significant increase in the Waqf Board’s income can be ensured. Neglecting this land will lead to the land grabbers staking a claim, and the Waqf Board may have to prove their property in court based on fake documents.

However, the situation demands immediate action by the Waqf Board to protect their properties from land grabbers and prevent further damage to Waqf properties. It is essential to take legal action against those who have been involved in this fraudulent activity to ensure that justice is served.

Kashmir issue should be resolved as per UN resolutions: China

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: China said on Saturday that the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan was left over from history and should be resolved as per the UN resolutions while avoiding any unilateral action.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang arrived in Pakistan on Friday for a two-day visit, which is his first trip to the country. He co-chaired a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday.

The two sides issued a joint statement at the conclusion of the 4th round of the ‘Pakistan-China Strategic Dialogue’ in Islamabad.

    MS Education Academy

According to the statement, the entire range of bilateral relations and cooperation, including in political, strategic, economic, defence security, education and cultural domains was reviewed while regional and global issues of mutual interest were also discussed during the dialogue.

It stated that both sides underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability in South Asia and the need for the resolution of all outstanding disputes.

“The Chinese side reiterated that the Kashmir dispute was left over from history between India and Pakistan and should be properly and peacefully resolved in accordance with the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.

“Both sides opposed any unilateral actions that further complicate the already volatile situation,” according to the statement.

India has previously criticised China and Pakistan for their unwarranted references to the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

“We have consistently rejected such statements and all parties concerned are well aware of our clear position on these matters. The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh are and always will be integral and inalienable parts of India. No other country has locus standi to comment on the same,” the Ministry of External Affairs said last year when the two close allies mentioned the Kashmir issue in a joint statement.

China and Pakistan also agreed on continuing their enduring support on issues concerning each other’s core national interests, the joint statement said.

“Reaffirming Pakistan’s special place in China’s neighbourhood diplomacy, the Chinese side reiterated its firm support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as its unity, stability, and economic prosperity,” it read.

The Pakistani side reiterated its commitment to the “One China” policy as well as its firm support to China on all core issues of its national interest, including Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and the South China Sea.

“Reaffirming their commitment to high-quality development of CPEC, both sides noted with satisfaction the steady progress of CPEC projects,” according to the statement.

Both sides reiterated that CPEC is an open and inclusive platform for win-win cooperation and invited third parties to maximise benefits from it.

The two sides reviewed the progress of various projects at Gwadar and reiterated their resolve to turn the region into a high-quality port and a hub for trade and connectivity.

The two foreign ministers underlined that Pakistan-China friendship was a historic reality and a conscious choice of the two nations, the statement said.

The Pakistani side expressed gratitude to the Chinese side for its economic and financial support and its generous assistance package for post-flood reconstruction and rehabilitation.

The two sides reiterated their firm resolve to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, it said.

The Chinese side appreciated the measures taken by Pakistan to ensure enhanced security of Chinese projects, personnel and institutions in Pakistan, as well as the steps are taken to apprehend and bring to justice the perpetrators targeting Chinese nationals in Dasu, Karachi and other attacks, it added.

The two sides agreed to further build on the cooperation in security and counter-terrorism domains.

The two sides underscored the need for the international community to provide continued assistance and support to Afghanistan including through unfreezing of the country’s overseas financial assets.

People of Karnataka don’t need anyone’s blessings: Sonia Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Hubbali: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said that the people of Karnataka are living and leading their life by working hard, and they do not need anyone’s blessings.

She said this while responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that if the BJP is not re-elected to power, the state would not get the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Congress leader addressed a huge public meeting here.

    MS Education Academy

Sonia Gandhi said that the BJP was worried and perturbed over the Bharat Jodo Yatra of her son and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi as it was against those who were spreading hate.

She said that Karnataka, and even India cannot progress without ending the atmosphere of BJP’s loot, lies, ego and hatred, adding that the BJP has turned into an arrogant political party.

The senior Congress leader said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was trying to intimidate Congress workers in Karnataka.

She said that arm-twisting tactics would not work against Congress. She was referring to the Enforcement and Income Tax raids being carried out in the state against Congress leaders.

The Congress leader also recalled that she won from Bellary constituency 24 years ago, and how the people of Karnataka had treated her.

She also said that Karnataka had elected former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1978 from Chikmangaluru.

Sonia Gandhi said that the people of Karnataka are those who live with pride, and they would not accept corruption by the governments at the Centre and state.

She also said that it was the responsibility of people to strengthen their voice against the BJP government’s “dark rule”.

Saying that the BJP was rattled ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections, Sonia Gandhi said the party was using “all tactics and all kinds of repression against political opponents”.

“Don’t you think that dacoity has become the business of those in power? You had not given them power in 2018 but they robbed the government and captured it… and then, their 40 per cent commission,” she said.

The Congress leader also made indirect reference to the letter written by the contractors association to the Prime Minister on the 40 per cent commission being charged for public works in the state.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who switched to the Congress from the BJP, was also present at the dais along with Sonia Gandhi.

  • Indians second largest group crossing English Channel: Home Office data

Indians second largest group crossing English Channel: Home Office data

    [ad_1]

London: The number of Indians illegally crossing over into the UK across the English Channel has increased sharply in the first three months of the year, making them the second biggest cohort after Afghans, according to the latest Home Office statistics.

Between January 1 and March 31, 2023, the most common nationality arriving via small boat was Afghans (909, 24 per cent) followed by Indians (675, 18 per cent), the new data revealed.

A total of 3,793 people were detected arriving in small boats in the same period, a Home Office statement said, adding that the “crossings are generally higher in better weather.”

    MS Education Academy

In 2022, almost half of small boat arrivals were Albanians (28 per cent of the total, although these arrivals occurred mostly between July and September 2022) and Afghans (20 per cent, with their numbers greater towards the end of the year).

The top five nationalities now illegally crossing the Channel in small boats include, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

While the final statistics are due to be published on May 25 this year, a last month Home Office data showed 683 Indians arriving in the country on small boats in 2022, as compared to 67 in 2021.

In February this year, Indians allegedly became the third-largest group of migrants entering UK shores illegally after Afghans and Syrians, The Times report said citing Home Office sources.

The report had said that about 250 Indian migrants made the perilous crossing in small boats this year alone, outnumbering the 233 who arrived via small boats in the first nine months of last year

The Home Office had said a reason for spike in numbers could be Serbia’s visa-free travel rules for Indians.

Until December last year, all Indian passport holders could enter Serbia without a visa for up to 30 days but this arrangement ended on January 1, resulting in some Indians travelling in small boats into the EU and then to the UK, according to Home Office sources.

“We have seen a spike of Indian nationals coming across in small boats over the last few months,” the Home Office source had told The Times.
