  • ‘The Kerala Story’ gets poor reception; theatres in TN stop screening film

‘The Kerala Story’ gets poor reception; theatres in TN stop screening film

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Amid stinging reviews, allegedly poor box office collections as well as protests, theatres in Tamil Nadu stopped the screening of “The Kerala Story” in the State from May 7 onwards.

When this writer tried to book via online platforms for a Sunday afternoon show, it was not possible anymore.

President of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, M Subramaniam, popularly known as Tiruppur Subramaniam, confirmed the news that the few multiplexes that had shown the film had decided to withdraw it.

    MS Education Academy

“The film was only shown in a few multiplexes owned by pan-India groups, mostly PVR. Locally-owned multiplexes had already decided not to show the film, as it did not have any popular stars. In Coimbatore for instance, there were two shows so far — one on Friday and one on Saturday. Even those did not do well. Given that, theatres decided that it was not worth going through the threat of protests and such,” added Subramaniam.

On April 6, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) staged a protest against the release of the film in Chennai. Seeman, the party’s coordinator, who is also actor and director, along with NTK cadres, had protested near Anna Nagar Arch.

Film industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, who said he was planning to watch the film on Sunday, only to find out it was no longer shown, had also tweeted that the film multiplexes will stop screening “The Kerala Story”.

“The multiplex owners have cited potential law and order issues and lack of interest as reasons for the move,” said Pillai.

Meanwhile in Kerala, according to the distributors, E4 Entertainment, 22 screens across the State are screening the films. Although the theatre owners in Kerala had told Press Trust of India before the release of the film that they were not worried about the adverse publicity, on the day of release, on May 5, a few theatres, including PVR Cinemas at Lulu Mall and Oberon Mall in Kochi, decided not to screen the film.

When contacted, a spokesperson for PVR Cinemas had declined to comment.

  • Congress Karnataka poll manifesto a document of appeasement politics: Assam CM

Congress Karnataka poll manifesto a document of appeasement politics: Assam CM

    [ad_1]

Mangaluru: The Congress manifesto for the May 10 assembly elections in Karnataka has exposed the party’s mindset and its hatred for the majority community, culture and dharma of the country, BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.

Addressing reporters here, Sarma said the manifesto is a document of appeasement politics. The party had always followed the policy of appeasement and the previous Siddaramaiah government in the State had withdrawn several cases registered against activists of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI).

He said the PFI ban has been a success in Assam, where numerous activists of the anti-national movement were arrested.

    MS Education Academy

The Congress is now equating PFI with Bajrang Dal which should be deplored, he said. The Bajrang Dal cannot in any way described as an anti-national or extremist outfit, he said.

Sarma said the people of Karnataka who are leaders in IT, biotechnology and agriculture do not need a guarantee from the Congress. “How can Rahul Gandhi, who himself has no guarantee in politics, provide guarantee to the people of Karnataka,” he asked.

The Assam Chief Minister said the BJP is extending welfare schemes to all sections of people irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Even B R Ambedkar had opposed reservation on religious lines, he said.

Saudi economy grew by 3.9% in Q1 of 2023

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s economy grew by 3.9 per cent on an annual basis during the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same quarter of 2022.

The non-oil activities led the Saudi economy to grow in the first quarter of 2023.

According to data issued by the Saudi General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), on Sunday, this increase was supported by the growth of non-oil activities by 5.8 per cent during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2022.

    MS Education Academy

Oil activities in the Kingdom grew by 1.3 per cent on an annual basis during the first quarter of this year.

International Monetary Fund says the Saudi economy grew 8.7 per cent in 2022, but expects the kingdom’s GDP growth to drop to 3.1 per cent this year.

The Kingdom, which is the largest oil exporter in the world, seeks to diversify its economy to reduce dependence on oil revenues and increase the contribution of the non-oil sector to the gross domestic product, as part of its Vision 2030.

On April 25, Reuters predicted that the economies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries would grow at a much slower pace in 2023 compared to 2022. Because its resources were affected by the decline in revenues from crude oil sales and production cuts.

There should be no politics over terrorism: Ghulam Nabi Azad

    [ad_1]

Jammu: DPAP chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said there should be no politics over terrorism and that terror in any part of the world is not in the interest of public.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also credited the BJP-led Centre for bringing peace to the region, but said several things like the abrogation of Article 370 and reconstituting Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories should not have been done.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party event here, Azad said, “Terrorism in any part of the world, including Jammu and Kashmir, is not in the interest of the public. It is the public which suffers huge losses and are forced into poverty and illiteracy. Before terrorism, J&K was a prime destination of tourists from around the globe.”

    MS Education Academy

He said tourism has revived over the past two years as peace is beneficial to everyone. “There should be no politics over terrorism,” he underlined.

The Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) leader also credited the Centre for “ending the culture of strikes and stone-pelting” in the Union territory (UT).

On the growing terror incidents in Rajouri and Poonch district of Jammu region where 26 security personnel and nine civilians were killed in eight terror attacks since October 2021, he said it is a cause of concern for the entire country, people and the border state.

“Three major incidents took place this year in the Rajouri-Poonch belt, consuming innocent lives. Such incidents should not have happened,” he said, adding that people should join hands with security agencies to root out terrorism from the region.

Azad also reiterated his demand for holding of early assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and said an elected government is much better than the Lt Governor administration as members of the legislative assembly in 90 constituencies can help address the problems of the people in a better way.
