  • Kerala doctor murder: Outraged medical bodies stage protest

Kerala doctor murder: Outraged medical bodies stage protest

    [ad_1]

Kollam/Thiruvananthapuram: Angry medical professionals came out on the streets protesting after a 22-year-old doctor was stabbed to death by a patient she was treating on Wednesday.

Condemning the attack, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) termed the incident as unfortunate and sad.

In a statement issued by KGMOA’s president Dr T N Suresh, the union of government medical professionals said all services except emergency treatment will be suspended today in Kollam district.

    MS Education Academy

It sought exemplary punishment for those responsible for the incident and demanded that stringent measures be put in place to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

KGMOA also urged the government to strengthen security in hospitals, ensure due precautions are taken when bringing the accused in custody for medical examination and urgently implement a triage system.

An IMA official said that doctors and nurses try their best to save lives but if their lives are in jeopardy, what should be done. “Such incidents should not happen. We (doctors) cannot continue working in such circumstances. It is unacceptable that our lives are in danger when we are trying to save lives. We had in the past too indicated our objections to such attacks on medical professionals. We are angry and sad over the incident,” he said.

Dr Vandana Das (22) was stabbed to death by Sandeep (42) while she was attending him in Kerala on Wednesday. Sandeep was brought there by police after being involved in a fight with his family members.

She was attending to Sandeep when suddenly he fatally attacked her with a pair of surgical scissors and a scalpel on her head, neck and chest.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of the doctor and said the incident was “shocking and extremely painful”. He said a thorough investigation will be conducted in the matter.

“Assaulting health workers in the line of duty is unacceptable. A thorough investigation will be conducted into the incident. The government will take strong action against attacks on doctors and health workers,” Vijayan said in a statement.

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission, based on media reports of the incident, on its own initiated a case and sought a report within seven days from the District Police Chief of Kollam.

The incident kicked off a political row over Health Minister Veena George’s statement before the media that the victim was a house surgeon and therefore, inexperienced and got scared when the attack occurred.

Criticising her statement, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K Sudhakaran questioned what the minister meant by the doctor being inexperienced.

“Does she mean the doctor was inexperienced to counter or defend against an attack by a man addicted to drugs and alcohol? The statement is a joke,” he told reporters.

Condoling the death of the doctor, Sudhakaran said it was sad and unfortunate that something like this happened.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and senior Congress leader V D Satheesan said the doctor’s murder has shaken the entire Kerala society.

He contended that it was a dangerous situation that hospitals are not safe places and alleged that the doctor was killed due to “negligence of the police”.

Education Minister V Sivankutty also condoled the death and said it was a shocking incident. He said the government will take all necessary steps under the law including departmental action against the accused, who is a school teacher.

The state government came under fire from the Congress and the BJP with both parties alleging that it has done little to ensure safety of healthcare workers at their workplaces.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan, while expressing shock and concern over the tragic incident, contended it was a shame that doctors and healthcare workers were not safe in Kerala.

He alleged that the “apathy and callousness” of the Pinarayi Vijayan government and its “misgovernance” was tarnishing the image of the state and bringing disrepute to it.

“Shocked to learn about the brutal murder of Dr Vandana Das and attack on hospital staff in Kottarakkara. Atrocious that dreaded criminals are cut loose, endangering the lives of life savers. Deeply concerned about the safety of doctors and healthcare workers in Kerala.

“Shame that doctors and healthcare workers are not safe in Kerala, which is a renowned global destination for medical tourism and has a rich legacy of various streams of medicine and healthcare. The apathy and callousness of @pinarayivijayan and the misgovernance of @CPIMKerala is tarnishing that image and bringing disrepute to the State. It’s a disgrace that @pinarayivijayan government can’t keep our doctors safe,” he tweeted.

Speaking along similar lines, Satheesan alleged it was deplorable that the state government has done little to ensure safety of healthcare workers.

He said there were widespread problems in the health department and in each case only inquiries were announced and beyond that nothing else happened.

The Congress leader attacked George too by saying that the minister had ordered the “most number of investigations in the state’s history”.

Pakistani court indicts Imran Khan in Toshakhana corruption case

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Wednesday indicted Imran Khan in the Toshakhana corruption case, in fresh trouble for the former prime minister who was arrested by paramilitary Rangers a day earlier from the Islamabad High Court premises.

Khan, 70, has been in the dock for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch, he received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

Established in 1974, the Toshakhana is a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division and stores precious gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments and states and foreign dignitaries.

    MS Education Academy

On Wednesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman was indicted in the Toshakhana case. The charge sheet was read out to Khan in the courtroom.

Khan was present in the District and Sessions Court where judge Humayun Dilawar conducted the hearing. Khan has denied any wrongdoing.

The case was filed last year by the Election Commission of Pakistan and Khan had skipped several hearings in the past months.

It alleges that Khan had “deliberately concealed” details of the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana – a repository where presents handed to government officials from foreign officials are kept – during his time as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales.

Khan was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in October last year for not sharing details of the sales. The election body later filed a complaint with the district court to punish him, under criminal laws, for selling the gifts he had received as prime minister of the country.

  • ‘CM doesn’t trust his MLAs…’: PM Modi’s dig at Gehlot post meet in Rajasthan

‘CM doesn’t trust his MLAs…’: PM Modi’s dig at Gehlot post meet in Rajasthan

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused the Congress government in Rajasthan of following a policy of “appeasement” and taking a soft stand against terrorists, as he blamed the acquittal of the 2008 Jaipur serial blasts accused on this.

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Abu Road, he took a dig at the Congress infighting and said, “The chief minister does not trust his MLAs, they don’t trust him.”

Referring to the 2008 Jaipur serial blasts, the prime minister alleged that the Congress government in the state did not fight the case strongly, leading to the acquittals.

    MS Education Academy

He also alleged that there was a complete breakdown of law and order in Rajasthan under Congress’ rule.

“Congress govt in Rajasthan is afraid to take action against criminals because of vote bank politics,” PM Modi alleged.

This comes right after the PM met and shared the stage with the Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot at a gathering in Rajsamand district’s Nathdwara town where Prime Minister Modi launched various projects costing over Rs 5500 crore.

At the gathering addressing the public Gehlot stated that the opposition should be respected in a democracy and hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will work towards it.

“If this is done, the ruling party and the opposition will be able to serve the country more vigorously,” the senior Congress leader said, with Modi on stage, stressing that for democracy the fight is over ideology.

It is significant to note that Gehlot also drew the PM’s attention towards pending projects in the state including Dungarpur-Ratlam via Banswara rail line, Karauli-Sarmathura rail line and the national project status to Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project.

Following Gehlot’s remarks, in a veiled attack on opposition parties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said some people are so full of negativity that they don’t want to see anything good happen in the country and only like to create controversy.

Modi said those who measure everything with votes are unable to devise plans keeping the country in mind.

“Because of this thinking, priority was not given to infrastructure development in the country,” he said without naming anyone.

He said those filled with negativity neither have a vision nor the capability to think beyond their selfish political motive.

  • Go Airlines: Legal scene now shifts to US court after unproductive Pratt & Whitney meet

Go Airlines: Legal scene now shifts to US court after unproductive Pratt & Whitney meet

    [ad_1]

Chennai: After getting what it had prayed for before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), the legal scene now shifts to a US court where Go Airlines (India) Ltd has filed a suit against the aircraft engine maker Pratt & Whitney.

The Wadia group’s low cost airline has taken Pratt & Whitney to the court in the US to make it honour the award given by an emergency arbitrator appointed in accordance with the 2016 Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

Speaking to IANS, Go Airlines CEO Kaushik Khona said the US court’s decision is expected to happen soon.

    MS Education Academy

According to the airline, it was forced to apply to the NCLT after Pratt & Whitney, the exclusive engine supplier for its Airbus A320neo aircraft fleet, refused to comply with an award issued by an emergency arbitrator appointed in accordance with the 2016 Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

“That order directed Pratt & Whitney to take all the reasonable steps to release and dispatch without delay to Go First at least 10 serviceable spare leased engines by April 27, 2023 and a further 10 spare leased engines per month until December 2023, with the objective of Go First returning to full operations and achieving its financial rehabilitation and survival,” the airline added.

Go Airlines said that even if Pratt & Whitney complied with the arbitration award, it would be able to resume full operations by August/September 2023.

Khona said even meeting the top brass of Pratt & Whitney when they visited India in January 2023 did not result in any positive response.

The top brass of Pratt & Whitney led by Shane Eddy, President, had been to Bengaluru in January 2023 to officially open the doors of the company’s India Engineering Centre (IEC).

“On January 19, 2023, Varun Berry (Managing Director and Vice Chairman of the Wadia group’s Britannia Industries Ltd) and I had gone to Bengaluru to meet Eddy and Mr.Hendrik Deurloo, President, (Commercial Engines) to again asking to provide much awaited and promised repaired engines and spare engines and induct failed engines into MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul),” Khona told IANS.

According to Go Airlines, the engine maker had promised through a signed Side letter in 2012 that if an engine failed within its initial 6,000 hours (or 4,200 take-off and landing cycles) of normal operation, it would repair and recondition that engine at no charge.

The airline said Pratt & Whitney engine problems have been an industry-wide issue. The teething problems continue even after so many years clearly indicating an inherent design problem.

“These GTF engines were developed on an unproven, new’ technology platform prematurely tested and forced into the market to capture airline attention with performance stats that were never achieved,” Go Airlines charged.

“Between 2016 and February 2023 GoFirst (brand of Go Airlines) carried out 510 GTF Engine removals: 289 Engine Changes as a result of at least 28 different defects, and 221 Engine Swaps. It also shows that the most prevalent technical issue, by some order of magnitude, has been combustor distress, with 140 GTF Engines removed for this issue alone.”

The airlines said 15 per cent of total Pratt & Whitney GTF powered aircrafts are grounded because of faulty engines globally (178 aircrafts are grounded out of 1,219 aircraft as of March this year.

And the most affected region is India with 65 grounded aircraft out of a total 178.

“Out of a total 60 global customers, only four have grounded aircraft in excess of 25 per cent and two of them are Indian. Pratt & Whitney’s recent proposal whereby they proposed to give 5 per cent of induction slots to Go First despite AOG’s (aircraft on ground) at 54 per cent is hard to believe and is a deliberate attempt to kill Go First,” Go Airlines said.

According to Khona, if Indian passengers are suffering high airfare now then it is due to Pratt & Whitney.

“They (Pratt & Whitney) take India for granted,” said Khona.
