  • Ajay Maken writes to Delhi L-G seeking probe into renovation at Kejriwal’s residence

Ajay Maken writes to Delhi L-G seeking probe into renovation at Kejriwal’s residence

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A day after alleging that renovation work at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence cost Rs 171 crore and not Rs 45 crore, Congress leader Ajay Maken on Monday wrote to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, requesting his immediate intervention to ensure that public money is not misused and to initiate a probe into the matter.

In the three-page letter to the L-G, Maken, who is a former Union minister, said, “I’m writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the extravagant expenditure, environmental damage, and violation of heritage protection and zonal plans involved in the construction of the Chief Minister’s residence in Delhi.”

In the letter, the Congress leader alleged that the construction of the new CM House has cost the exchequer around Rs 171 crore, including the relocation of 22 officers’ bungalows, with 15 out of 22 houses adjacent to CM’s house on Flagstaff Road being demolished or being vacated.

    MS Education Academy

He said that this figure includes around Rs 126 crore spent on purchasing 21 new Type 5 flats in CWG Village to compensate for the housing shortage.

Alleging violation of Master Plan Delhi (MPD) 2021, Maken said, “The new CM House has been constructed in the Civil Lines Old Bungalow Zone, an area protected under MPD 2021. The previous residence was a single-storey colonial-style building, which has been replaced by a three-storey structure with a basement (B+G+1+2) with a covered area of around 20,000 sq ft (almost double the previous covered area). This construction directly contradicts the MPD 2021 provisions, which aim to preserve the heritage and character of Lutyen’s Bungalow Zone and Civil Lines Old Bungalow Zone.”

He also cited damage to environment due to removal of 28 full-grown trees, which contradicts the provisions of MPD 2021 that emphasise the importance of preserving green cover in these protected zones.

The Congress leader alleged that work orders were seemingly split by PWD to keep them below Rs 10 crore, with the intent to avoid approval of the secretary/principal secretary, PWD (for works amounting to more than Rs 10 crore).

“This was allegedly done by engineers of PWD in collusion with then PWD Minister Satyendar Jain, as required by the delegation of financial powers,” he said.

He also alleged lack of concurrence from the finance department, deviations in procurement procedure and circumventing municipal laws and deceiving the Legislative Assembly.

“In light of these concerns, I kindly request your immediate intervention to address these issues and ensure that public money is not misused, environmental damage is minimised, and heritage protection and zonal plans are strictly adhered to in future development projects. Upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and responsible governance is crucial for the betterment of our society and for safeguarding the interests of the citizens.

“I thus request you to conduct an inquiry into the above points. And if found guilty, grant sanction for prosecution of the principal beneficiary, the Chief Minister, and the principal perpetrator, then PWD Minister of GNCTD,” Maken said.

BJP leaders watch ‘The Kerala Story’ with DU girl students

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several BJP leaders on Monday watched a show of ‘The Kerala Story’ at a cinema hall in walled city with a number of female students from the Delhi University, invited by them, among the viewers.

The media relations department of the party’s state unit had booked an exclusive show at Delite cinema hall in Daryaganj.

The exclusive show was attended by Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, state president Virendra Sachdeva, and former Union minister Harsh Vardhan.

    MS Education Academy

The politicians were joined in the screening by members of ABVP, the RSS student wing, a group of DU girl students, some local traders, and members of press, the Delhi BJP said in a statement.

Sachdeva claimed the film to be based on Kerala women who were “forced love jihad and conversion victims.”

It raises awareness against dangers of “love jihad” across the country, he said.

The film which has been mired in controversy even before its release has been directed by Sudipto Sen and has been boycotted in several districts of Kerala, and across Tamil Nadu by theatre owners.

The central claim of the film that 3,200 women from Kerala joined ISIS remains unsubstantiated. The producers of the film even removed the claim from all its social media posts after it was asked to do so by Kerala High Court. The film was released on May 5.

The state BJP has asked the Delhi AAP government to exempt the film from entertainment tax and hold its special screenings for girls in the 15-16 age group.

In a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor had asked him to watch the film, claiming the film was based on the “serious issue of love jihad”, “religious conversion” and pushing innocent girls into “terrorism.”

Junior home minister G Krishna Reddy had in 2020 informed parliament that the term ‘love jihad’ is not defined in law, and no police cases have been filed under it.

Union minister Smriti Irani will watch the movie in a theatre in Chanakyapuri on Tuesday evening, Kapoor said.

SP, BSP are in ICU: UP Deputy CM Maurya

    [ad_1]

Bareilly: Expressing confidence that the BJP will win a large number of seats in the civic body polls, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Monday said both the Samajwadi Party and the BSP are “in the ICU” and that voters are not willing to provide “oxygen” to them.

Campaigning for BJP’s mayor candidate Umesh Gautam here, Maurya said, “If there is a need to bring money for the development of Bareilly, it will be brought from Delhi and Lucknow. Goddess Lakshmi does not come on ‘elephant’ (BSP poll symbol), ‘hand’ (Congress symbol), or ‘cycle’ (SP symbol) but only on ‘lotus’ (BJP symbol).”

Targeting the opposition parties, the deputy CM said, “SP and BSP are in the ICU and people are not giving oxygen to them. If they get oxygen, they will again trouble the people. If the voters give them a chance, then they will also reach the ICU.”

    MS Education Academy

He said that the SP, the BSP and the Congress will be ousted when the results of municipal elections come on May 13. “The BJP has the blessings of the public. There are achievements of the double-engine government before all.”

Claiming that the BJP will win all the 17 municipal corporations of the state, including Bareilly, Maurya said, “A triple-engine government is being formed in place of the double-engine government as mafia raj has ended in the state.”

A new era of development has begun, he said, appealing to voters to ensure the victory of the BJP candidates in the municipal elections.

Dublin-based Aircastle seeks insolvency proceedings against SpiceJet

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The next and latest in line after Go First, SpiceJet airline is facing bankruptcy proceedings as the Ireland-based aircraft lessor Aircastle Ltd has moved the principal bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to launch a bankruptcy process against the airline.

Agreeing to hear the lessor’s plea, a two-member bench of the NCLT issued a notice to the airline and posted the matter for further consideration on May 17.

The bench led by NCLT President Ramalingam Sudhakar directed SpiceJet to attend the hearing on the given date.

    MS Education Academy

Claiming default in dues payment, Aircastle has sought initiation of corporate insolvency proceedings against SpiceJet.

A spokesperson for SpiceJet commented that the notice was issued routinely in connection with the Aircastle matter.

“In the Aircastle issue, notice was issued in normal course. There was no adverse ruling against SpiceJet. The court has recognised the fact that parties are under settlement discussions and they can continue to pursue the same,” the spokesperson said.

“There is no impact on flight operations,” the spokesperson added.

SpiceJet is facing a separate plea by Credit Suisse in the apex court alleging contempt of court. The case dates back to August 2022, when SpiceJet and Credit Suisse had agreed to settle a payment dispute of $24 million.

In April this year, however, Credit Suisse moved the top court alleging that the airline had failed to pay $4.9 million, as per the terms of settlement.

Before the top court, the airline’s counsel had assured the Supreme Court that it will make the payment in two tranches in April and May.

While the NCLT will hear the insolvency plea filed by Aircastle against SpiceJet on May 17, the SC will also hear Credit Suisse contempt plea to verify the payment status.

Closely monitoring Guwahati child abuse case: Himanta Biswa Sarma

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said he is closely monitoring a case in which a doctor couple was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing children who they claimed were adopted by them.

Sarma, while addressing a press conference, said he will write to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to ensure that justice is delivered within six months.

‘I have asked the police to file the chargesheet within 30-45 days. I am monitoring the case on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

A doctor and his family’s domestic help were arrested in Guwahati on Saturday, while his psychiatrist wife, who is frequently seen in local TV channels’ talk shows on mental health, was caught on Sunday while trying to flee from the city.

The police have slapped various Sections of the IPC along with Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) against the doctor couple and their maid, who has also been arrested.

After their arrest, they were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate who remanded the couple to five days police custody and the maid to judicial custody.

The police had received information that a four-year-old girl was tied to a pole in the terrace of their apartment and kept there for hours, following which a team from Paltan Bazar police station went to their apartment and picked up the doctor and his family domestic help on Friday evening.

The girl was sent for a medical examination and according to the report, she was sexually abused and had injury marks on her body as well as private parts,

The couple claimed they have three children whom they have adopted but the police are investigating whether they had followed proper legal procedure for adoption, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah had said on Sunday.

The police also rescued the other two children from their apartment and sent them for medical examination.

The doctor’s wife had made a video on the day of his arrest and uploaded it on social media, claiming that a conspiracy was hatched to “defame and destroy” her family.

The Assam Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) has also taken cognisance of the matter and wrote to the civil and police administration to initiate an inquiry and take action against the accused.
