New Delhi: Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi will hoist the national flag at party headquarters in Srinagar at the culmination of ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ on January 30, with all Pradesh Congress Committee offices following suit in solidarity with the Yatra.

Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal said the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started in Kanyakumari on September 7, will conclude on January 30 in Srinagar after having covered 3,970 km, 12 states and two Union territories.

“The Bharat Jodo Yatra has received an overwhelming response from millions of people and has spread Rahul Gandhi’s message of love and unity among citizens of the country. The tremendous support from all sections of the society and heartfelt involvement of the people has made this a historic Yatra and a game changer in Indian politics,” he said in a statement.

Venugopal said to mark the culmination of Yatra, Gandhi will hoist the tricolour at PCC headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar at 10 am on January 30.

“As desired by the Congress president, all Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs), District Congress Committees and Block Congress Committees will also hold flag hoisting functions at the same time on January 30 at their respective party offices or important sites in solidarity with the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he said.

The Congress has also invited 23 political parties to participate in the Yatra on the concluding day as a mark of opposition solidarity.

  • AAP accuses Delhi BJP leaders of amassing disproportionate assets

AAP accuses Delhi BJP leaders of amassing disproportionate assets

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday accused former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta and its ex-national vice president Shyam Jaju of amassing properties worth crores disproportionate to their known sources of income when the former was the mayor of the erstwhile North Delhi civic body.

Gupta, however, termed the allegations “false and politically motivated”.

AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said the BJP should cancel the primary membership of Gupta and Jaju within two days, failing which the Aam Aadmi Party will take to the streets and gherao the BJP headquarters.

“The former state president and in-charge of the BJP got a company (promoted by their sons) registered on the address of the party office… They own 40 to 45 properties in Delhi and neighbouring areas. The Lokayukta has sent them three notices but they have not replied yet,” he alleged.

Demanding that both the BJP leaders reveal the source of their income within two days, Pathak said there should be a thorough investigation to ascertain if they had the backing of senior leadership of their party.

There should be a probe to find out if there is a link between the rise of the two leaders and the “downfall” of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, he said.

The AAP’s chief spokesperson and MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj said the Lokayukta is conducting a probe into the allegation of disproportionate assets against Gupta.

“Despite the Lokayukta issuing notices multiple times, Adesh Gupta did not declare his source of income. The company promoted by the sons of Gupta and Jaju is under the scanner for allegedly using as it a vehicle to aid financial wrongdoings,” he claimed during a press conference.

Bhardwaj claimed that a complaint with the Lokayukta has claimed that Gupta got the company incorporated while he was the North Delhi MCD mayor and his earnings are disproportionate to his declared sources of income.

Delhi Lokayukta Justice H C Mishra (retired) issued notices to Adesh Gupta from August 2022 to January 2023 asking him to declare his assets and sources of income, but he has not provided any information to date, he claimed.

“The Lt Governor should write a letter to the Anti-Corruption Branch and CBI about how these properties were bought and sold. The centre should take up a detailed investigation of the case to prove whether it believes in the principle of anti-corruption or not,” he said.

Reacting to the allegations, Adesh Gupta said, “I will file a defamation case against Saurabh Bhardwaj. They have a history of making false allegations and then apologising to BJP leaders following defamation cases. Bhardwaj should also be prepared for this.

“I respect the Lokayukta and will share all the details. Every year, I share details of my assets with the government. I am a dedicated BJP worker and have been exposing corrupt acts of the AAP and they are targeting me and my family to suppress my voice,” he claimed.

  • 2015 Dalit youth murder: Madras HC judges inspect crime spot, rail track

2015 Dalit youth murder: Madras HC judges inspect crime spot, rail track

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Madras High Court judges Justice M.S. Ramesh and Justice Anand Venkatesh inspected the Tiruchengode Arthanareeswar temple and the rail track in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district where the body of Dalit youth Gokul Raj, abducted and murdered in 2015 for going around with an upper class girl, was found.

Gokul Raj was murdered by a gang headed by S. Yuvaraj, a self-proclaimed youth leader of a dominant caste outfit, for visiting the Tiruchengode temple along with a girl, Swathi, who belonged to an upper caste.

The Dalit youth was abducted by the members of the caste outfit and later his body was found with his head severed on the rail track near Pallipalayam in Namakkal.

Gokul Raj was in love with Swathi and had visited Tiruchendur temple along with her. Now, Swathi has turned into a hostile witness in the case and is facing perjury.

A special court for cases under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in Madurai had sentenced Yuvaraj and ten others to life imprisonment while acquitting five others.

Gokul Raj’s mother Chithra, however, had moved the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court seeking capital punishment for Yuvaraj and others and against the acquittal of five others.

Justices Ramesh and Venkatesh decided to conduct an inspection of the crime scene to understand the topography of the area as also the exit and entrance gates as well as the CCTVs’ location in the temple.

The judges inspected the area on Sunday and inspected all eight CCTV cameras as well as all entrances and exits.

After the temple premises, the judges inspected the rail track at Pallipalayam where the body of Gokul Raj with his head severed was found.

Lawyers and family members of both Gokul Raj and Yuvaraj were present but they were not allowed to meet the judges.

US consulate in Hyderabad conducts visa interviews on Saturdays

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In an attempt to reduce wait times, the US embassy in New Delhi and the consulates in Hyderabad and other cities decided to conduct in-person visa interviews on Saturdays too.

On January 21, the U.S. Mission in India launched the first in a series of special Saturday interview days. In the coming months, the Mission will continue to open additional slots for appointments to take place on select Saturdays.

US visa interview wait times likely to reduce

The additional interview days are one component of a multi-pronged initiative to address the backlog in visa processing caused by COVID-19.

The Department of State has implemented remote processing of interview waiver cases for applicants with previous U.S. visas.

In order to increase processing capacity, dozens of temporary consular officers from Washington and other embassies will arrive in India between January and March 2023.

Apart from it, the Department of State is also increasing the number of consular officers permanently assigned to the Embassy and Consulates in Hyderabad and other cities in India.

    US consulate in Mumbai

Consulate General Mumbai also extended its weekday operating hours to make space for additional appointments.

By this summer, the U.S. Mission in India will be at full staffing, and it is expected that the processing of visas will reach levels that existed prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic resulted in profound reductions in the department’s visa processing capacity, and many of US embassies and consulates were at times only able to offer emergency services.

As travel restrictions have been lifted, the U.S. Mission to India has made it a priority to facilitate legitimate travel and adjudicated over 800,000 nonimmigrant visas in 2022, including record numbers of both student and employment visas.

Pakistani girl illegally staying in Bengaluru arrested

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: A 19-year-old Pakistani girl, who allegedly forged her identity to stay illegally in India, has been arrested in Bengaluru, police said on Sunday.

The police arrested Iqra Jeevani and handed over to the FRRO officials. She was later sent to a state home for women.

Bellandur police also arrested Mulayam Singh Yadav, a 25-year-old security guard from Uttar Pradesh, whom the Pakistani girl married after meeting him through a dating app a few months ago.

According to police, she had entered India through the porous India-Nepal border.

The investigations revealed that Yadav befriended Iqra on a dating app and they decided to get married.

The security guard had called her to Nepal a few months ago where they got married. The couple crossed into India to reach Birgunj in Bihar and from there, reached Patna.

Yadav and Iqra later came to Bengaluru and stayed in a rented house in Junnasandra where Yadav started working as security guard since September 2022.

He even secured an Aadhaar card for Iqra after changing her name to Rava Yadav and applied for an Indian passport.

Iqra came under the scanner of central intelligence agencies when she was trying to contact her family in Pakistan. The central agencies alerted the Karnataka intelligence. Acting on the information, police raided the house and arrested the couple.

Sources said further investigations were on to check whether the Pakistani was part of any espionage ring

  • Kashmir has almost totally mainstreamed: former RAW chief AS Dulat

Kashmir has almost totally mainstreamed: former RAW chief AS Dulat

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Kashmir has “almost totally mainstreamed”, with Pakistan out of Kashmiri minds and separatism and the Hurriyat “all finished”, former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief A S Dulat said on Sunday.

He maintained that there was no need to scrap Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, saying there was nothing left in it and it was only a “fig leaf”.

Speaking at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival here, he cited Prince Harry’s recently released memoir “Spare” and said the former senior British royal wrote that “in the abnormalities of life, the only thing he found normal and enjoyed was Afghanistan”. Dulat said he could say the same about Kashmir.

Prince Harry had joined British troops on the front line fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Dulat was also of the view that militancy will continue to come down but “terrorism will stay unless we sort it out with Pakistan” and batted for dialogue with the neighbouring country.

“Pakistan has been an inherent part of Kashmir. Since 1947, what the government of India has been trying to do is to mainstream Kashmir and get Pakistan out of the Kashmiri minds. And I think we’ve succeeded to a very large extent.

“Today, Kashmir has almost totally mainstreamed. The separatism, the Hurriyat that we talk about is all finished,” said Dulat who headed the intelligence agency during 1999-2000.

He was in conversation with senior journalist Mandira Nayar about his latest book “A Life in the Shadows: A Memoir”, published by HarperCollins India.

“I had argued that we didn’t have to do away with Article 370 because there was nothing left in it. It was only a fig leaf which had provided a Kashmiri a little bit of dignity…,” the retired IPS officer of the 1965 batch explained.

The Centre abrogated Article 370 on August 5, 2019.

It was, however, unfortunate that Delhi had always viewed the region in “black and white” and ignored its “greys”.

While referring to Prince Harry’s remark on his stint with the British military in Afghanistan, he said, “I could say the same about Kashmir. We still love it, enjoy it, and go there… Unfortunately, Delhi has always been seen in it black and white. They don’t understand the greys.”

“If you go to Kashmir, not just for holiday to Gulmarg or Pahalgam. But go and interact with the people in Srinagar, you’ll find they are the kindest, gentlest and nicest people. The grey comes from deviousness.

“But I’ve spoken to a lot of Kashmiri leaders, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is presently locked up. And he says ‘Yes, we tend to be a little devious, but that’s what you’ve taught us because you’ve never spoken the truth to us. So, we also lie to you,” he added.

Dulat, who is the only RAW chief to have visited Pakistan, said he had been to the neighbouring country four times between 2010 and 2012.

“I have been to Lahore twice and also visited Islamabad and Karachi. It was a great experience,” he added.

Dulat said he got to know Pakistan better through Track 2 or backchannel diplomacy.

In his latest book, “A Life in the Shadows”, he also talks about Ajit Doval, the current National Security Advisor of India.

At one point, there was a conversation about bringing Doval across to Pakistan, a chance, Dulat said, the neighbours lost.

Asked to draw parallels between the ‘Doval Doctrine’ and the ‘Dulat Doctrine’, the former head of India’s external intelligence agency said he didn’t have a doctrine.

“Mr Doval has a doctrine, I don’t know. People talk about it,” he added.

Dulat, who retired from service in 2000, said efforts were also made to start a military-to-military dialogue.

“We were talking over each other. When we began to talk, suddenly, the Pakistanis complained, nothing was happening. Everything is status quo ante. We must try to find a way to move forward. I said, ‘Just invite Ajit Doval to Lahore’.”

Incidentally, Doval attended the first two sessions of the Track 2 diplomacy, he said.

“As 2014 got closer, he knew which way he was headed. And, so he opted out,” Dulat said.

He said he has often squabbled with his Pakistani friends who talk about Kashmir with “a lot of authority”.

“But I tell them ‘You don’t know Kashmir. Kashmir is India. We deal with them on an everyday basis so we understand them’.

“A Kashmiri will tell you something in Islamabad, something in Srinagar. It’s the same between Srinagar and Delhi, but at least we understand each other.”

According to Dulat, a “new murmur” has started in Srinagar “that Sheikh Sahab made a huge mistake in 1947. That Kashmir should have gone with Jinnah”.

“But that’s a small, minuscule number,” he said.

India’s current “muscular policy” was paying dividends in curbing militancy in Kashmir, he said.

“My argument is militancy has come down and will continue to come down. But terrorism will stay unless we sort it out with Pakistan. It’s important to talk to Pakistan and also China,” said Dulat, who served in Kashmir when militancy was at its peak.

Dulat also talked fondly about Asad Durrani, his counterpart and former director general of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Their equation took the shape of the 2018 book “The Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace”.

  • IUML alleges its innocent workers being targeted in name of action against PFI

IUML alleges its innocent workers being targeted in name of action against PFI

    [ad_1]

Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally of the Congress-led UDF in Kerala, on Sunday alleged the properties of its innocent workers were attached by the state government as part of the recovery proceedings initiated by it against the arrested leaders of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI).

The properties of the arrested PFI workers in Kerala are being attached in connection with the damage to public property, in violence, during a hartal called by the outfit in last September.

The recovery proceedings against those involved in the violence were initiated two days after the Kerala High Court expressed displeasure over the government’s delay in executing its order in connection with it.

Accusing the government of “hunting the innocent workers of IUML” in the name of action against the PFI, senior party leader P K Kunhalikutty alleged that it is being done to “save the real culprits involved in the violence” during the hartal.

“The government should make it clear from where they have got such a list (for attachment process). Various representatives of people, those who are actively working in other political parties and people who don’t have any criminal cases are all being targeted. The real complaint is against a particular organisation. But now, we suspect that innocent people are being targeted in order to save the real culprits (involved in violence),” Kunhalikutty told reporters.

IUML state general secretary P M A Salam alleged that innocent workers of the party were being targeted by the state government in the name of the court-ordered action against errant PFI leaders.

The IUML leaders said the issue will be raised in the state Assembly session beginning on Monday.

Meanwhile, state Revenue Minister K Rajan on Sunday said the attachment of the properties of arrested leaders of the PFI will be completed by Monday. He said the attachment of properties of those who damage public property can be done only on court’s direction.

The minister said a report detailing the attachment process will be submitted before the High Court on Monday.

“The revenue recovery process of attaching the properties belonging to the now-banned PFI leaders will be completed by Monday. The attachment process is being done as directed by the High Court. A report in this regard will be submitted before the high court on Monday,” Rajan told the media in Kochi.

He said it was being done under various provisions of The Revenue Recovery Act.

The state Revenue Department had on Friday initiated a state-wide attaching properties of arrested leaders of the PFI as part of the recovery proceedings in connection with the damage to public property, in the violence, during a hartal called by the organisation in September last.

The PFI leaders are accused in the case connected with the hartal called by the organisation against the nation-wide raids on PFI offices and arrest of its leaders following its ban.

The high court had on January 18 directed the state government to complete the recovery and submit a district-wise report by January 23.

It had also said there was no need to issue notices prior to carrying out the recovery proceedings.

The court had expressed displeasure over the delay as the state government last month had assured to complete the recovery by January 15.

The government had on November 7, 2022 told the court that a loss of Rs 86 lakh was incurred due to the damage to property during the violence in the state-wide hartal.

The government had also submitted that a loss of Rs 16 lakh was suffered by private persons during the violence.

The State police have registered a total of 361 cases and arrested 2,674 people, it had said then.

Earlier, the High Court had asked the banned PFI and its ex-State general secretary Abdul Sathar to deposit Rs 5.2 crore with the Home Department towards damages estimated by the KSRTC and the state government in connection with the hartal-related violence, saying they must be held accountable for it.

Sathar, when he was the State general secretary of the outfit, had called for the hartal against the nation-wide raids and arrest of its leaders, and then allegedly absconded.

Hours after the PFI was banned, he had issued a statement saying the outfit had been disbanded in the wake of the Home Ministry’s decision and subsequently, he was arrested.
