Zomato CEO says aware of fraud at delivery agents’ end, fixing it

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After an entrepreneur complained in a LinkedIn post that a Zomato delivery agent advised him to cheat the company by paying some money directly to him and enjoy the food, the company’s Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said he is “aware” of this fraud and is “working to plug the loopholes”.

Vinay Sati posted that a Zomato delivery agent suggested that from next time, pay him Rs 200 or Rs 300 and enjoy food worth Rs 1,000.

“Aap bas mujhe 200rs, 300rs de dena or 1000rs ke khane ke maje lena,” Sati quoted the agent as saying in the post.

The agent allegedly told him that “I will show it to Zomato that you have not taken the food but will also give you the food you ordered”.

“I got goosebumps hearing what scam is happening with Zomato,” posted Sati.

He ordered some Burger King burgers from Zomato and made the online payment.

“And as soon as the delivery boy came after 30-40 minutes, he told me that sir, don’t pay online next time,” said the entrepreneur.

“He said that next time when you will order food worth 700-800rs through COD (cash on delivery) you only have to pay Rs 200 for that.”

Sati said: “Deepinder Goyal ji, now don’t say that you don’t even know that this is happening?”

Goyal replied: “Aware of this and working to plug the loopholes”.

5 killed in airstrike on IS militants in Iraq: Military

    [ad_1]

Baghdad: The death toll from Saturday’s airstrike on Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq’s Salahudin province rose to five, the Iraqi military said.

Soldiers found the bodies of two IS militants and body parts of three other militants in the IS hideout that was bombed on Saturday by Iraqi aircraft in a rocky area in eastern Salahudin, in addition to weapons and an ammunition cache, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement from the Joint Operations Command (JOC).

On Saturday, an earlier JOC statement said that Iraqi aircraft carried out an airstrike on two IS militants in their hideout near Tuz Khurmato and killed them all.

The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, the IS militants have since melted into urban centres, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.

  • Macron calls on France, Germany to become pioneers of Europe refoundation

Macron calls on France, Germany to become pioneers of Europe refoundation

    [ad_1]

Paris: France and Germany should together become “pioneers” in the refoundation of Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron said in Paris during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of France-Germany reconciliation.

Macron on Sunday pointed out that the first task of the two countries, as pioneers, should be building together a new energy model beyond their differences, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We must encourage and accelerate at the European level necessary public and private investments for the ecological transition,” he noted, adding that the two allies must complete the diversification of their sources and encourage the production of carbon-free energy in Europe.

Macron said that the two countries should also be pioneers for innovation and technologies of tomorrow in order to build the ecological and social prosperity that unites France and Germany.

Macron laid out an ambitious European industrial strategy, Made In Europe 2030, which he said would make Europe the champion of new technologies and artificial intelligence.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the future of Europe depended on the “driving force” of Germany and France.

“The German-French engine is a machine for compromise, well oiled, but from time to time also loud and marked by hard work,” he said during the ceremony.

The 23rd Franco-German Council of Ministers was also held on Sunday, during which topics such as economy, energy transition, defense and European policy were discussed. In a joint declaration, the two countries agreed to increase collaboration in space and cyberspace.

“We must strengthen and promote our political, economic and social models, accelerate the energy transition to achieve climate neutrality and sustainability as soon as possible,” the two countries said in the declaration.

The two countries also expressed determination to meet energy, environment, climate, industry and biodiversity challenges.

This is the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic that the Franco-German Council of Ministers was held offline.

  • Deliveries of weapons to Ukraine will lead to ‘global catastrophe’: Russian official

Deliveries of weapons to Ukraine will lead to ‘global catastrophe’: Russian official

    [ad_1]

Moscow: Deliveries of “offensive” weapons to Ukraine will lead to a “global catastrophe”, Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Russian State Duma, has said.

“If Washington and NATO countries supply weapons that will be used to strike civilian cities and attempt to seize our territories, as they threaten, this will lead to retaliatory measures using more powerful weapons,” Volodin said on Telegram on Sunday.

“Members of the US Congress, the German Bundestag, the National Assembly of France and other European parliaments must realise their responsibility to humanity,” he was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying.

“With their decisions, Washington and Brussels are leading the world to a terrible war: to a completely different military action from today, when strikes are carried out exclusively on the military and critical infrastructure used by Kiev,” Volodin said.

“Given the technological superiority of Russian weapons, foreign politicians making such decisions need to understand that this could end in a global tragedy that will destroy their countries,” he said.

On Friday, defence leaders from Western countries attended a meeting at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where they pledged further military support to Ukraine but failed to iron out divisions on sending battle tanks.

At the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged defence leaders attending the meeting to “speed up the supply of weapons to Ukraine”, the presidential press service reported.

  • Israeli PM dismisses key minister, ally after court order

Israeli PM dismisses key minister, ally after court order

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed a senior cabinet ally to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that disqualified the minister from serving.

Netanyahu on Sunday announced he is firing Aryeh Deri, the minister of health and minister of interior affairs, during his weekly cabinet meeting, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by the Prime Minister’s office.

The move follows a Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday that Deri, an influential and veteran leader of the ultra-Orthodox party Shas, cannot serve as a minister due to a conviction in February 2022 over tax fraud.

“I am forced, with a heavy heart, great sorrow and a very difficult feeling, to remove you from your position as a minister in the government,” Netanyahu wrote in a dismissal letter to Deri.

The Supreme Court’s decision “ignores the people’s will,” Netanyahu told Deri. “I intend to find any legal way for you to continue to contribute to the state of Israel,” Netanyahu said.

Deri said in a statement after the meeting that he would continue to serve as the leader of the Shas party and help the government to advance its agenda, including a controversial judiciary reform to weaken the Supreme Court.

Deri’s Shas became the third-largest party in the parliament after winning 11 seats in parliamentary elections in November. If Netanyahu loses its support, he might lose his majority in the parliament as his far-right coalition only has 64 seats in the 120-seat parliament.

The legal decision deepens an already unprecedented rift between the new hard-right government and the judiciary over the government’s reform plan to weaken the Supreme Court.

On Saturday, at least 120,000 Israelis, as estimated by police, protested in Tel Aviv and other cities against the legal overhaul which they claim will undermine the autonomy of the courts and threaten Israel’s democracy.

  • Pfizer CEO avoids question on ineffectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine

Pfizer CEO avoids question on ineffectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine

    [ad_1]

The chief executive officer (CEO) of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Albert Bourla ignored questions regarding the ineffectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine when confronted by Rebel News at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Friday.

In a video, the CEO is bombarded with questions such as, “Mr Bourla, can I ask you – when did you know the vaccines did not stop transmission? How long did you know that before saying it publicly?”. He responds by saying, “Thank you very much.”

When the reporter questions Bourla on why the latter did not disclose that vaccines cannot stop transmission, Bourla remained mum.

“You said it was 100% effective, then 90%, then 80%, then 70%, but we now know that the vaccines do not stop transmission. Why do you keep that secret?” asked the reporter to which Bourla replied, “Have a nice day.”

When asked how much money he made from the vaccine, Bourla kept quiet.

According to a report by the news agency AFP, Pfizer offered 23 of its patented drugs to poor countries during the peak of the pandemic. It was offered on a no-profit basis. Last year Pfizer announced its new initiative – An Accord for a Healthier World – that would include off-patent drugs, a total of 500 products.

“The Accord portfolio offering now includes both patented and off-patent medicines and vaccines that treat or prevent many of the greatest infectious and non-communicable disease threats faced today in lower-income countries,” Pfizer said.
