A Lutheran church ceremony in Jerusalem ordained the first Palestinian female pastor in the holy land on Sunday.

Sally Azar, a Palestinian from Jerusalem will now lead the English-speaking congregation at the church of the Redeemer, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan.

She was ordained by her father in Jerusalem’s old city before a packed crowd with hundreds of well-wishers from all over the world.

According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the West Bank and Gaza Strip were home to around 47,000 Christians till 2017.

Most Palestinian Christians belong to denominations that do not allow female clergy. However, Azar belongs to a small minority of protestant congregations that ordain women ministers.

The Lutheran church reportedly said that it has around 3,000 adherents in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Jordan.

Azar will be one of five ordained women in the Middle East, joining one in Syria and three in Lebanon, according to the Middle East Council of Churches.

The new pastor, following her ordination, said “I hope that many girls and women will know this is possible and that other women in other churches will join us.”

Teenage pregnancy in Philippines declines in past 5 yrs

    [ad_1]

Manila: Teenage pregnancy among girls aged 15 to 19 in the Philippines declined to 5.4 percent in 2022 from 8.6 percent in 2017, according to official data.

The data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that teenage pregnancy was lower in urban areas at 4.8 percent than in rural areas at 6.1 percent, reports Xinhua news agency.

The 19-year-olds had the highest pregnancy percentage.

In terms of educational attainment, teenage pregnancy was most common among those with primary education, standing at 19.1 percent.

The percentage of teenage pregnancy decreases as educational attainment increases.

The Philippines has been grappling with teenage pregnancy over the past decade, which is a “national social emergency”.

Some officials had warned that adolescent birth rates had hovered at a level that merited “national concern”.

According to official data, teenage pregnancy has a mortality rate two to five times higher than adults.

The neonatal death rate of babies born to young mothers are three times higher than that of babies born to mothers aged 25 to 29.

Meanwhile, this social problem could also trap a large cross-section of families in perpetual cycle of intergenerational poverty, officials warned.

  • Hyderabad: Teachers detained for protesting GO 317 at CM residence

Hyderabad: Teachers detained for protesting GO 317 at CM residence

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Several government school teachers were detained on Sunday after they protested at Pragathi Bhavan demanding the scrapping of or amendment to government order (GO) 317. The teachers were shifted to various police stations while they were protesting.

In a video which went viral on Twitter, a protestor can be seen bemoaning the plight of teachers.

“Don’t teachers who come under the non-spouse category have husbands and wives? Are we supposed to life long work away from our families? How is this fair? If we take our children with us as well, our children lose the chance to be bought up in their home towns. It is only right that we are sent back to our zilla constituencies,” she remarked.

Teachers have been opposing GO 317 for the past few months, saying that it has caused them to lose their local connections and alienate their families as a result of transfers. According to the demonstrators, the GO has wreaked havoc on married couples when both the husband and wife are educators.

In 2021, the Telangana government issued the GO establishing a zonal system for job allocation, allowing the District Collector and the Head of the Concerned Department to form the allocation committee, make choices regarding jobs, and propose transfers for the District Cadre Posts.

While the paparazzi couldn’t spot the bride and groom, these photos come across as a delight and a confirmation that there is indeed a wedding happening. Neither cricketer KL Rahul, nor Athiya Shetty announced the news of their wedding officially.

However, earlier in the day, Suneil Shetty interacted with the paparazzi stationed outside his farmhouse and made a promise to them.

As the paparazzi congratulated the ‘Dhadhkan’ actor, he had a small interaction with them and promised that he would get his kids – Athiya and Rahul, along with the entire family for the official pictures.

He said, “Main kal leke aata hoon bachhon ko.” The actor then continued, “Aapne jo pyaar dikhaya uske liye bohot bohot thank you.”

This was the first official confirmation of the wedding from the family.

The wedding is speculated to happen at the Shetty farmhouse in Khandala and, as per reports, it will be an intimate affair.

KL Rahul and Athiya have been dating for a while now and the actress was also seen with the cricketer on a few tours of Team India. Athiya is the daughter of Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty.

The lovebirds made their relationship official the previous year as the Indian cricketer wished his ladylove on her birthday with a cute social media post featuring Athiya and himself.

  • How Google’s layoff announcement different from other companies

How Google’s layoff announcement different from other companies

    [ad_1]

Google’s parent company Alphabet recently announced layoffs of 12,000 employees, or about 6 percent of its workforce, globally. After the announcement, it joined the Big Tech league of Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft which had also gone for layoffs.

However, the announcement made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai is different from other companies.

To understand the difference, the layoff announcements by various companies need to be analysed.

Google: I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected.

Microsoft: Today, we are making changes that will result in the reduction of our overall workforce by 10,000 jobs through the end of FY23 Q3. This represents less than 5 percent of our total employee base, with some notifications happening today.

Amazon: On January 4, the company CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement that they were not done with the annual planning process as earlier mentioned, and “I expected there would be more role reductions in early 2023”.

“We typically wait to communicate about these outcomes until we can speak with the people who are directly impacted. However, because one of our teammates leaked this information externally, we decided it was better to share this news earlier so you can hear the details directly from me,” said Jassy.

Meta: Mark Zukerberg’s message to all Meta employees mentioned, “There is no good way to do a layoff, but we hope to get all the relevant information to you as quickly as possible and then do whatever we can to support you through this.

Everyone will get an email soon letting you know what this layoff means for you. After that, every affected employee will have the opportunity to speak with someone to get their questions answered and join information sessions.”

The one thing which is different in Google’s way of layoffs is letting affected employees know before the announcement of the collective fate.

In the layoff, it is always better to clearly communicate about it with the affected employees before the general announcement instead of making them wait to know their fate.

  • After WBBSE, question on ‘Azad Kashmir’ figures in ABTA test paper

After WBBSE, question on ‘Azad Kashmir’ figures in ABTA test paper

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Controversy over a question on “Azad Kashmir” in the test paper of West Bengal School Service Commission (WBBSE) is yet to be over and a fresh row has started in the state after similar question appeared in the exam paper published by All Bengal Teachers’ Association (ABTA).

Besides WBBSE officially releasing the test paper compilation every year, which contains Class 10 final test examination (pre-board) questions of some leading schools and acts as a guide for the candidates appearing for the Class 10 board examinations, ABTA also publishes a parallel exam paper on its part.

The ABTA is basically an association of Left leaning school teachers in the state.

Last week there was major political uproar over the issue after a question in WBBSE’s test paper was detected where the students were asked to point out the location of “Azad Kashmir” on the map. Now, a fresh uproar has started with the ABTA.

A question paper released by it asks the students to write a note of “Azad Kashmir”.

ABTA’s general secretary Sukumar Pain admitted the existence of such a question in the association’s test paper. “But the syllabus of the board itself has reference to this matter. The state government- approved books too have reference to this matter. Since there is a controversy in the matter, it would have been better if the related question had not been there in our test paper,” he said.

Meanwhile, controversies over the question in WBBSE’s test paper has reached the Central level, with the Union education ministry having sent a communique to the state education department seeking an explanatory note in the matter.

In the communique, it has been stated that the matter of “Azad Kashmir” is an extremely sensitive issue and the Union government does not recognise ‘Pakistan occupied Kashmir’ as “Azad Kashmir”.

Sensing the gravity of the matter, the state education department has already initiated an internal probe into the matter. Sources said that a total of nine teachers have been identified and cautioned in the matter by the WBBSE.

Out of the nine teachers cautioned, six are members of the board’s history syllabus committee.

A letter of caution has also been forwarded to the headmaster of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Vidyamandir, whose exam paper carrying the controversial question on “Azad Kashmir” featured in the test paper.

Saudi project clears 1,045 mines within week in Yemen

    [ad_1]

Sanaa: The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (Masam) announced they have cleared 1,045 mines in the war-ravaged Arab nation in the third week of January.

Masam said in a statement that it had cleared 15 anti-personnel mines, 131 anti-tank mines, 896 unexploded ordnance, and three other explosive devices in the war-torn provinces of Dhalea, Shabwa, Hodeidah and Taiz, reports Xinhua news agency.

A total of 383,193 Houthi-laid mines have been cleared since the Saudi project was launched in Yemen in 2018.

These landmines and improvised explosive devices laid by the Houthi militia continue to pose a threat to Yemeni civilians despite the ongoing mine-clearing efforts.

According to the pro-government demining experts in Yemen, more than 1 million landmines have been laid since the outbreak of the civil war in late 2014, when the Houthi militia took control of several northern provinces and forced the government out of the capital Sanaa.
