Hyderabad: In a first, Amazon launches Amazon Air in India

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In a bid to enhance the transportation network and facilitate faster deliveries, Amazon launched Amazon Air at GMR Aero Technic on Monday.

Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) formally launched Amazon Air at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) stating that it would strengthen Amazon’s distribution network and enable faster delivery to customers.

Amazon has partnered with the Bengaluru-based cargo airline Quikjet to launch its maiden air freight service in the country and plans to utilise the full cargo capacity of a Boeing 737-800 plane and carry out deliveries in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi.

Speaking at the launch event, KTR said, “This makes Amazon the first e-commerce company in India to partner with a third-party carrier to provide a dedicated air network for deliveries with Hyderabad getting to host the event.”

“Amazon is currently working with Telangana’s Handlooms department in helping over 4500 weavers in 56 villages across the state,” remarked KTR.

Air traffic has been increasing tremendously at RGIA and is likely to hit the 40 million mark by 2028. The air cargo traffic has also increased by 35 percent in 2020-21, he said.

Vice President, worldwide customer service at Amazon Akhil Saxena said, “This launch will support 1.1 million sellers in India.”

“We continue to invest in speed as we have invested in delivery infrastructure to strengthen the delivery network. This will help ship goods faster from our fulfilment centres to last-mile deliveries,” he added.

Amazon Air was launched in 2016 in the US with over three dozen Boeing freighter planes and then briefly tested in the UK as well.

Interestingly, Amazon’s air cargo planes in India have been labelled as Prime Air which is a separate service by the e-commerce giant that provides deliveries using drones.

This comes months after Amazon shut down three business units in India- Amazon Distribution, Amazon Food and Amazon Academy in 2022 amid a global slowdown.

Amazon currently faces direct competition from Walmart-backed Flipkart in India.

  • Are petrol, diesel prices likely to drop in Hyderabad, other Indian cities?

Are petrol, diesel prices likely to drop in Hyderabad, other Indian cities?

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The prices of petrol and diesel in Hyderabad and other Indian cities are likely to drop as union petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday asked Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to cut the retail prices of petrol and diesel if the crude oil prices in the international market come down and also if OMCs under recovery come down.

“Oil marketing companies should cut down prices once international prices are stabilised and they have managed to recover under-recovery,” he said.

    How prices are calculated?

Oil companies review and revise the prices of petrol and diesel on a daily basis. The new prices become effective from morning at 6 a.m.

The daily review and revision of prices are based on the average price of benchmark fuel in the international market in the preceding 15 days, and foreign exchange rates.

Though Oil Marketing Companies are free to revise product prices based on economics, in practical terms political considerations are also important in the revision of prices.

Meanwhile, a senior Oil Marketing company said, “We are earning a gross profit on petrol and it is in single digit. However, during the last 15 days, due to cracks, petrol profitability has been affected. However, diesel sale is still on gross loss and it is in double-digit.”

    Petrol, diesel prices in Hyderabad

The prices of petrol and diesel vary from state to state due to different rates of Value Added Tax (VAT) by the state governments.

In Hyderabad, the prices of petrol and diesel as of January 23 are 109.66 and 97.82 per liter respectively.

Following are the fuel rates in metros

CitiesPetrol price per literDiesel price per liter
    HyderabadRs. 109.66Rs. 97.82
    DelhiRs. 96.72Rs. 89.62

  • Bombay HC allows termination of 32-week pregnancy with foetal abnormalities

Bombay HC allows termination of 32-week pregnancy with foetal abnormalities

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A woman has the right to choose whether to continue her pregnancy or not and the decision is hers and hers alone to make, the Bombay High Court said while allowing a married woman to terminate her 32-week pregnancy after the foetus was detected with severe abnormalities.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and S G Dige, in its judgment of January 20, a copy of which was made available on Monday, refused to accept the medical board’s view that the even though the foetus has serious abnormalities it should not be terminated as the pregnancy is almost at its fag end.

The woman had approached HC seeking to terminate her pregnancy after sonography revealed the foetus had severe abnormalities and that the baby would be born with physical and mental disabilities.

“Given a severe foetal abnormality, the length of the pregnancy does not matter. The petitioner has taken an informed decision. It is not an easy one. But that decision is hers, and hers alone to make. The right to choose is of the petitioner’s. It is not the right of the Medical Board,” the court said in its order.

Refusing termination of pregnancy only on grounds of delay would not only be condemning the foetus to a less-than-optimal life but would also be condemning the mother to a future that will almost certainly rob her of every positive attribute of parenthood, the HC said.

“It would be a denial of her right to dignity, and her reproductive and decisional autonomy. The mother knows today there is no possibility of having a normal healthy baby at the end of this delivery,” the court said.

“Accepting the Medical Board’s view is not just to condemn the foetus to a substandard life but is to force on the petitioner and her husband an unhappy and traumatic parenthood. The effect on them and their family cannot even be imagined,” it added.

The petitioner’s foetus is detected with both microcephaly and lissencephaly, and this is what the future portends, the bench said.

Asserting that the rights of the woman should never be compromised in the “blind application of a statute”, the court said, “Justice may have to be blindfolded; it can never be allowed to be blindsided. We are agnostic about the relative positions of parties. We can never be agnostic about where justice needs to be delivered.”

It said cases such as this often raise profound moral questions and dilemmas, but it is immutable that the “arc of the moral universe always bends towards justice”.

The bench said the existence of the foetal anomaly, as well as its severity, was certain as also the fact that it was detected late.

“Because it is difficult to predict at birth what problems will occur, microcephalic babies need constant and regular follow up and check-ups with health care providers. There is no known cure or standard treatment for it. In more extreme cases, microcephalic babies need intervention almost constantly,” the court said.

Most disturbingly, the prognosis for children with lissencephaly depends on the degree of brain malformation, it added.

The bench noted the medical board did not take into account the social and economic position of the couple.

“It ignores their milieu entirely. It does not even attempt to envision the kind of life, one with no quality at all to speak of, that the petitioner must endure for an indefinite future if the Board’s recommendation is to be followed,” the HC said.

“The Board really does only one thing: because late, therefore no. And that is plainly wrong, as we have seen,” the court said while allowing the pregnancy to be terminated.

Pathaan likely to get postponed as theatre owners not ready to reduce Brahmastra shows

    [ad_1]

A Shah Rukh Khan film on the big screen is nothing short of a celebration for his fans, and when Shah Rukh returns in a full-fledged role after four long years, it’s a carnival of sorts. However, the recent update about the movie is likely to upset Shah Rukh Khan fans.

Sources suggest that Pathaan is likely to get postponed as the theatre owners aren’t ready to reduce the shows of Brahmastra and give those slots to Pathaan. Theatre owners claim that even after two months, Brahmastra shows are getting housefull and reducing the shows will be a loss of opportunity cost.

Yash Raj Films have written a letter to Karan Johar requesting him to reduce the number of shows of Brahmastra until Pathaan break evens its cost. Karan Johar hasn’t replied to the letter yet but is likely to agree since the Brahmastra is already on OTT.

Yash Raj Films letter to Karan Johar is yet another proof that Brahmastra did a lot better than what was claimed by movie critics and is a slap on the face of people who trend Boycott Bollywood on social media.

Vistara reports net profit, crosses $1bn revenue mark in FY23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Vistara, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, has reported a net profit (excluding unrealized foreign currency loss and non-operating income) for the quarter that ended December 2022.

The airline crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year and reported break-even for the first time in the quarter.

Vistara on Monday said that it delivered remarkable results for the first time since its inception in 2013.

The airline achieved its highest-ever domestic market share of 10.4 percent in July 2022 and maintained its position as the second-largest domestic airline in India since then, flying more than 11 million passengers in the calendar year 2022.

Vistara also registered an 11 percent year-on-year growth in the member base for its frequent flyer program, Club Vistara.

Vistara grew its international network by over 180 percent in 2022, by adding seven additional routes including three new destinations (Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat).

It also grew its domestic network by over 50 percent, by adding six new routes including two new destinations (Coimbatore and Jaipur).

For the quarter that ended December 2022, the airline grew its capacity by 37 percent and passengers by 47 percent compared to the same period last year.

The airline recorded the second-highest on-time performance at four key metros and over 85 percent domestic load factor for most of the year in 2022.

This year, Vistara became the only Indian airline to be featured in Skytrax’s list of the World’s Top 20 airlines.

The airline currently has over 5,000 employees and operates close to 8,500 flights per month.

Vinod Kannan, Chief Executive Officer, of Vistara, said: “With significant network and fleet expansion and sustained growth over the last few months, 2022 has been a phenomenal year for Vistara in terms of our operational and financial performance. Each member of the Vistara family is incredibly proud of our collective achievements in an extremely challenging business environment that included the third wave of the pandemic and escalating costs. We are now aiming for higher goals as we enter the next phase of our growth journey.”

Vistara has augmented its operations from its hubs in Delhi and Mumbai and currently operates more than 75 and 50 daily domestic departures from the two cities, respectively.

With the delivery of 10 aircraft and the re-delivery of eight aircraft, the airline expanded its fleet size to 53 in 2022, said the airline.

Owaisi urges Centre to ban movie on Godse

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded a ban on the upcoming movie on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse.

The Hyderabad MP asked the Union government if it will ban the movie on Godse like it banned the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Stating that nobody in India can be greater than Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B R. Ambedkar, Owaisi said this country can never allow portrayal of a terrorist as a hero.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president was addressing a public meeting in the old city of Hyderabad on Sunday night.

He demanded the Centre to ban the movie and ensure that it is not released in any theatre.

Owaisi was apparently referring to the movie ‘Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh’ of Rajkumar Santoshi, scheduled for release on January 26.

Recalling that in 2013 a film on Bhindranwale was also banned by the government, he asked why a film on Godse can’t be banned.

“Why do you have so much love for Godse. How long will you continue to chant the name of Gandhi but love Godse in your heart?” he asked.

Terming Godse as the biggest terrorist of independent India, Owaisi wanted to know the opinion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the assassin of Gandhiji.

Referring to the ban on BBC documentary in India, he asked if the Prime Minister would also ban the movie on Godse.

The Hyderabad MP also asked the RSS to speak about Godse. He pointed out that Godse and Savarkar had a close relationship. He alleged that the ruling party was trying to portray the murderer of Gandhiji as a hero.

The AIMIM chief also slammed the union government for its attempts to interfere in the judiciary.

Stating that the judiciary is independent under the Indian Constitution, he alleged that the Modi government wants to appoint judges who agree with its ideology.

He said the government recommended a BJP Mahila Morcha leader in Tamil Nadu who had declared herself a ‘chowkidar’ on her Twitter account, for the post of judge.

  • Hyderabad: Fire at Numaish parking lot raises questions over public safety

Hyderabad: Fire at Numaish parking lot raises questions over public safety

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A major fire that broke out in the Numaish parking lot once again raises questions over the safety of thousands of people that visit the annual exhibition in Hyderabad.

In the fire incident, as many as three cars were burnt down to ashes. Initially, an electric car caught fire and then it spread to others.

Though the fire tenders present at the spot doused the fire, the incident refreshed people’s memory about the 2019 incident.

Speaking to Siasat.com, a regular Numaish goer Jameel Ahmed who witnessed the 2019 fire incident said that necessary arrangements need to be made at the exhibition ground and parking lot areas to avoid any untoward incident in the future.

Another person Irshad Ahmed questioned how cars burnt down to ashes if proper arrangements were made.

Fire brings back memories of the 2019 incident

In 2019, a massive fire broke out in Numaish in Hyderabad. In the incident, many stalls were burnt to ashes.

Luckily, no casualty was reported. However, following the incident panic prevailed and many traders incurred huge losses.

    History of numaish in Hyderabad

Numaish-e-Masnuaat-e-Mulki, or Numaish in short, made a humble beginning in 1938 as an event to promote locally-produced goods.

It was a group of graduates from Osmania University who came up with the idea of an exhibition to conduct an economic survey of the state.

The seventh Nizam of Hyderabad State, Mir Osman Ali Khan, inaugurated the first ‘Numaish’.

Enthused by the good response, it was decided to make it an annual event and use the earnings to promote education.

Beginning with just 50 stalls and a capital of Rs 2.50, it has today evolved into one of the biggest industrial exhibitions in the country.

Numaish could not be organized in 1947 and 1948 due to the turmoil in the aftermath of India’s Independence. With Hyderabad acceding to the Indian Union, the event bounced back in 1949.

The exhibition could not be held in 2020 due to the Covid-19 situation. This was only the third time in its history that it could not be held.
