    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Director General of Police Telangana Anjani Kumar held a meeting with officials of the Women Safety Wing Telangana to discuss the issues relating to safety and security of women and children in the state.

The meeting was attended by Additional DGP Telangana, Shikha Goel and DIG Women Safety Wing Telangana, B Sumathi.

Anjani Kumar appreciated the Women Safety Wing on the path-breaking work done by them in making Telangana one of the safest and most proactive states in terms of Women and Child Safety. The DGP stressed the need to further streamline and strengthen its response mechanism.

Women Help Desks (WHDs) are already functional in 750 police stations in the state and further will be set up in the remaining police stations across Telangana.

“Investigation support for crime against Women (CAW) through technology platforms to bring existing institutional support mechanisms into one place is proposed to be strengthened and streamlined. An independent 24×7 call centre will be set up to assess the satisfaction of the complaints,” Shikha Goel informed the DGP.

Bharosa Centres are presently working in 12 police units and they will be made functional in the remaining districts in a time-bound manner.

Around 25 Centres for Development and Empowerment of Women (CDEW) will be made operational shortly to take up counselling services for Domestic Violence victims in the tri-commissionerates limits.

The monitoring of trials in sexual offences cases through Bharosa has resulted in securing convictions in 23 cases in the year 2022.

Further, improvement in conviction percentage will be achieved through systematic identification of cases across the state.

Further Anti Human Trafficking units which are functional in all 30 units are proposed to have a more focused and targeted approach by identification of hot spots and creating of repeat offenders database and taking effective legal action.

She teams have played a major role in curbing eve teasing and various forms of harassment in public places by systematic working across the State, the officials said

During 2022, 6157 complaints were dealt with by the She Teams of which 521 FIRs were registered. She Teams also conducted 13,471 awareness camps.

Anjani Kumar stressed that the government has accorded the highest priority to crimes against women and children and in order to ensure the safety and security of women and children, WSW shall continue to work closely with all stakeholders.

It was also decided to recognise and reward officers who perform well in the field of Crime against Women and Children.

  • Still don’t know much about Shah Rukh Khan, barely watch films: Himanta

Still don’t know much about Shah Rukh Khan, barely watch films: Himanta

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Amid criticisms over his swift transition from “Who is Shah Rukh Khan” to “SRK called me”, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday clarified that he still doesn’t know much about the actor, and hardly watches movies.

The CM also said that he harbours little knowledge about the Hindi film industry.

“I have seen films of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Jeetendra……I still don’t know much about Shah Rukh Khan. Since 2001, I have seen not more than six to seven films,” he said at a press conference here.

Talking about his conversation with the megastar, Sarma said that he had received a text message from the actor on Saturday at 7:40 pm, which stated, I am Shah Rukh Khan. I want to talk to you’.

“There were many in the queue who wanted to talk to me. After clearing those, a message was sent to him (Shah Rukh) at 2 am on Sunday saying that I was available for a call. He then called me and said that his film was releasing soon and that he hoped there won’t be any problem.

“I asked him the name of his film and he said ‘Pathaan’. I told him ‘koi disturb nahi hoga’ (there will be no disturbances),” the CM recounted.

On the boycott calls given against the movie, Sarma said that those willing to watch the film will do so and the rest can skip it.

The CM asserted that his government, however, “will not let Assam get a bad name”.

Asked about his “Who is Shah Rukh Khan” remark, the chief minister retorted, “Why should I know him? I really did not know that he was such a great man….I do not watch many films. I know about older actors. The attraction for stars varies across generations.

“Besides, I don’t know the entire three crore people of the state or even my voters to whom I am indebted to,” he added.

Referring to ‘Pathaan’ poster vandalisation by right-wingers who also sought a ban on the film, Sarma noted that tearing down of posters was no crime and sought to know under what law they should be booked.

“Posters of politicians are torn down all the time but there is no discussion on that. It is time people changed their mindset,” he added.

Bajrang Dal activists had recently stormed a cinema hall in the Narengi area here, and tore down posters of ‘Pathaan’, burnt those and raised slogans against the film.

Pathaan’, starring Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, will hit the theatres on January 25.

  • Nitish Kumar appeals to Rajput community to unite in favour of JD-U

Nitish Kumar appeals to Rajput community to unite in favour of JD-U

    [ad_1]

Patna: Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday appealed to the people of Rajput community to become united in favour of his JD-U.

He made the appeal at an event titled ‘Swabhiman Diwas’, organised on the death anniversary of Maharana Pratap, by his party at the Milar high school ground here. The upper caste Rajputs are considered core voters of the BJP and Nitish Kumar is seeking to make inroads in the community. He is also challenging ally RJD which is claiming to be “A to Z” party, rather than just depending on its core Muslim and Yadav supporters.

The JD-U has welcomed the guests in a grand style offering chicken and rice apart from other foods for them.

During the occasion, over 50,000 people of the Rajput community assembled at the place from across the state. During the occasion, they demanded the release of Bahubali leader Anand Mohan who is serving a life term in Saharsa jail for murder of then Gopalganj DM G. Krishnayya.

Reacting to the demand, Nitish Kumar, from the stage, informed them that he has been making an effort in this regard and Anand Mohan’s wife Lovely Anand is well aware of this. He asked them to contact her about it.

“We are giving respect to the people of the Rajput community since Samata Party. We have sent many Rajput leaders to Vidhan Parishad and Rajya Sabha apart from giving tickets for Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. We have recently established the statue of Maharana Pratap in the heart of the city,” Nitish Kumar said.

Besides Nitish Kumar, every JD-U leader including Lalan Singh, Vashistha Narayan Singh, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Ashok Chaudhary, Sanjay Jha, Sumit Singh, Lesi Singh, Neeraj Kumar and many other leaders were present in the event.

The event was organised by JD-U MLC Sanjay Singh, who demanded a film city in the name of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput in Bihar and a medical college in the name of Maharana Pratap.

  • Ukraine storing weapons at nuclear plants: Russia

Ukraine storing weapons at nuclear plants: Russia

    [ad_1]

Moscow: Ukrainian forces are storing Western-supplied missiles and artillery shells in nuclear power plants, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin said on Monday, reports said.

He claimed that Kiev has been using the plants as cover for ammunition stockpiles, RT reported.

“There is credible information that Ukrainian troops are stockpiling the Western-supplied weapons and ammunition on the territory of nuclear power plants,” Naryshkin said, according to a statement on the intelligence service’s website.

He added that the armaments include rockets for US-made HIMARS launchers and missiles used by foreign air defence systems, as well as “large-caliber artillery shells”.

According to Naryshkin, several cars loaded with “lethal cargo” were delivered by rail to the Rovno Nuclear Power Plant in western Ukraine during the last week of December alone. “They rely on the calculation that the Russian Armed Forces would not strike nuclear power plants because they realise the danger of a nuclear disaster,” the intelligence chief said, RT reported.

Russia has accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, which is Europe’s largest. It is located in the eponymous region which, along with three other former Ukrainian territories, joined Russia following referendums in September.

Kiev denied targeting the facility and claimed that Russia was using the plant as a base and cover for its soldiers. Russian officials said that heavy weapons have never been deployed to the site, and that a select number of armed security personnel were maintaining the safety of the plant, as it is located near the frontline, RT reported.

  • ‘Sikh’ struck on head in hate-motivated assault in Canada

‘Sikh’ struck on head in hate-motivated assault in Canada

    [ad_1]

Toronto: A man, apparently a Sikh, was allegedly struck on the head, causing his turban to fall on the ground, by an unidentified man, who also made “derogatory comments” at a subway station in Canada, police said.

Police officers responded to an assault call at the Bloor-Yonge Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway station following the incident last week.

Upon reaching the scene, police found that a man had been struck on the head causing his “religious head covering” — which they later identified as turban — to fall on the ground.

The suspect allegedly passed derogatory comments at the victim before he left the TTC station, the Toronto Police said in a statement.

The victim, whose age or religious affiliation were not released by the police, sustained minor injuries on his head.

However, a report in Omni News, a multicultural and multilingual broadcaster in Canada, confirmed the identity of the victim as Sikh in its report.

The suspect was last seen wearing a blue hat and a black jacket and was carrying a black bag.

“After consultation with the specialised Hate Crime Unit, the investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence,” the Toronto police said in its statement.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said police are investigating the hate-motivated assault of a man at the subway station. “Our transit system – and city at large – must be safe places for all and free of hatred, without exception,” Tory tweeted after the incident.

“Hate has no place in our city. We must all call out and stand together against discrimination and violence,” he said.

Condemning the incident, the Toronto Transit Commission said that they will continue to assist Toronto Police in the course of their investigation.

Jammu: A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegation on Monday joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra here and discussed various issues including the government’s eviction drive as well as demands of Kashmiri Pandit employees with him, a party leader said.

The PDP delegation, comprising several senior leaders, joined the foot march at Kunjwani bypass, shortly after the marchers led by Gandhi entered Jammu from adjoining Samba district in the afternoon, the leader said.

PDP’s provincial president, youth wing, Pervez Waffa and additional general secretary Rajinder Manhas walked alongside Gandhi towards Satwari chowk for 15 minutes and briefed him about various issues concerning the common people, he said.

He said they informed Gandhi about the eviction drive launched by the J-K administration to “snatch” the land from the people despite the fact that they are holding the property for generations.

The delegation also informed the Congress leader about the Prime Minister package Kashmiri pandit employees and Dogra employees who have been on strike in Jammu for the past over six months, seeking their relocation outside Kashmir following targeted killings.

Growing unemployment in J-K, inflation and economic distress also came up for discussion during the interaction, the PDP said leader.

Bihar: Bajrang Dal harasses Christian family, police deny incident

    [ad_1]

A Christian family was harassed and beaten up reportedly by workers of the right-wing organisation Bajrang Dal who alleged that the family was into religious conversions.

The video is from Jandaha, Vaishali district in Bihar.

A Bajrang Dal worker recorded the video saying, “Hamare Ram see jo khilwad karega, usko hum barbaad kar denge (We will destroy anyone who messes with our Lord Ram).”

As other Bajrang Dal men try to assault the man, the women of the family, including an elderly person, try to rescue him.

At one point the person recording the video says, “Pehle is budiya ko maaro (hit this old woman).”

While the women try their best to save their male relative from the clutches of Bajrang Dal, they hardly succeed.

While the younger woman pleads to stop, the man recording the video says, “Dharam parvarthan kaahe karva rahe ho (Why are you conducting religious conversions).”

The whole episode takes place in a village flanked by others including a young child.

Siasat.com spoke to officials of Jandaha police station who termed it as a false incident. “There has been no complaint filed so far. It is completely baseless information,” a police officer said.

  • Goa: ABVP creates ruckus in St Xavier’s College

Goa: ABVP creates ruckus in St Xavier’s College

    [ad_1]

Members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) barged into the campus of St Xavier’s College, one of Goa’s premium colleges on Saturday and disrupted ongoing classes.

According to Mapusa police, the ABVP members were upset with the principal for not constituting a student council.

Speaking to Siasat.com, a police officer from the Mapusa police station said, “A few ABVP members were elected as student’s council but they alleged that the principal was purposefully delaying their induction. Hence they demonstrated in front of the principal’s office.”

Assuring that the situation is under control, the police officer said, “A meeting will soon be conducted between the college management and ABVP student delegations regarding the issue.”

However, the principal of St Xavier College surrounded by his staff and teachers posted a video describing the incident that took place on January 21.

He said the incident happened when science practicals were underway in the Chemistry lab.

“While the classes were in progress, ABVP members barged in shouting slogans, trying to instigate students to leave their classrooms and join them. The students however refused. In order to ensure the safety of our staff and students, the management asked them to leave the campus,” the principal said.

He thanked the Mapusa police station and Bardez taluka mamlatdar(an officer in charge of a taluka) Dashrath Gawas for restoring peace in the campus.

Condemning the incident, the principal appealed to his students not to engage in unruly activities.

NSUI Goa, Congress condemns ABVP’s act

Condemning what transpired at St Xavier’s College, the president of the State National Students Union of India (NSUI), Naushad Choudhary said that they will file a police complaint against those who created the ruckus.

Addressing the media on Sunday, Choudhary said, “We have details of students who went to St Xavier’s college and unlawfully disrupted the classes. We will file a complaint against the students on Monday. We will not keep quiet and appeal to all students to stay united and throw such people with disrupted agenda out.”

Alleging that some of the disruptors were outsiders, Choudhary questioned their access inside the college.

“Among the ABVP group who barged in the campus five were outsiders and two came from Maharashtra. Who gave them the right to enter the campus? It was an internal matter and they should have resolved it with the students of the college and the management,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Congress party also condemned the attack and said that such elements should not be allowed entry into any premises.

“The youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed into St Xavier’s College in Mapusa and disrupted classes. They were trying to infiltrate and promulgate law and order disturbances and probably violence. The teachers were panicky and the entire staff was worried,” Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira said.
