Tunisha suicide case: Sheezan Khan moves HC for bail and quashing of FIR

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Actor Sheezan Khan, arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of his co-star Tunisha Sharma, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking bail and quashing of the case.

Khan in his petitions said to have a relationship and break-ups are normal facets of life and hence he cannot be held responsible for Tunisha’s death.

While Khan’s plea seeking bail would be heard by a single bench of Justice M S Karnik on Tuesday, his second petition for quashing of the FIR and release on interim bail is likely to be heard by a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and P K Chavan on January 30.

Tunisha (21), who last acted in the TV serial Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul, was found hanging in the washroom on the set of the serial near Vasai in Palghar district of Maharashtra on December 24, 2022. Khan (28) was arrested the next for alleged abetment. He is currently lodged in a Thane jail.

Seeking quashing of the case, Khan said if two people are in any form of a relationship, and if the relationship is terminated either mutually or even by one of them, then the mere fact that the other person commits suicide does not justify the registration of an offence under section 306 of IPC with its consequences of arrest and custody.
The plea added that in Khan’s case, there is nothing to even suggest that he had done any act with the specific intention of compelling Tunisha Sharma to commit suicide.

“There is absolutely no mens rea (intention) pointed out or for that matter acts and deeds from which a mens rea is made out for the applicant to commit the alleged crime,” it said.

The petition said to enter into a relationship and break-up are normal facets of life.

“That the victim has also been in multiple relationships before and also the present relationship ended on a graceful note. That the break-up was mutual and approximately two weeks back and the victim had admittedly moved on, thus the breakup cannot be viewed as a direct action and proximate cause leaving the victim with no other option but to commit suicide,” it stated.

Khan and Tunisha have acted in a few television serials and were said to be in a relationship which allegedly came to an end just weeks before Tunisha was found hanging on the production set of her show.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday granted one-day exemption from personal appearance to actor Jacqueline Fernandez in a Rs 200 money laundering case involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar.

Additional Sessions Judge, Patiala House courts, Shailender Malik was supposed to hear the arguments on framing charges in the matter, but has adjourned this matter for February 15.

The court on January 16 issued notice to Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking the agency to respond to an application moved to court by Jacqueline seeking permission to fly to Dubai post January 27 for professional work.

As she had made a request for urgent hearing, the court had, hence, listed the matter for next hearing on January 25.

Jacqueline, even in December last year, had moved a plea seeking to travel abroad to visit her ill mother in Bahrain. Howbeit, she withdrew it as the court wasn’t willing to allow her to travel abroad.

Chandrashekhar is accused of extorting money from politicians, celebrities and businessmen, and allegedly duped pharma company Ranbaxy’s former owner Shivinder Mohan Singh’s wife Aditi Singh of Rs 200 crore.

Chandrashekhar has allegedly sent super expensive gifts to Jacqueline, while he also booked a chartered flight for her from Mumbai to Chennai during his bail period.

Moreover, according to ED, it is suspected that alleged conman had sent huge chunks of money extorted from Singh to the actor.

  • Jaishankar hails Vajpayee’s handling of diplomatic situation post 1998 nuclear tests

Jaishankar hails Vajpayee’s handling of diplomatic situation post 1998 nuclear tests

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday lauded then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s handling of the diplomatic situation following the nuclear tests in 1998 and said that within a space of two years India had engaged all the major countries of the world.

Presiding over the third Atal Bihari Vajpayee memorial lecture that was delivered by former Singaporean diplomat Bilahari Kausikan here, Jaishankar also hailed Vajpayee’s stint as an external affairs minister, and his role in strengthening India’s ties with the US and Russia.

The external affairs minister said the fundamentals of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest that are talked about now in terms of the modus vivendi with China, a lot of it is credited to Vajpayee.

Asserting that Vajpayee was never “impervious” to the challenges of terrorism, Jaishankar hailed his realism in using all instruments at his command to actually try to forge a basis of relationships in this region which would very explicitly abjure terrorism.

Talking about the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests, the external affairs minister urged people not to look just at the tests but also look at the diplomacy that followed them.

“Within a space of two years after the tests, we had engaged all the major countries of the world, had actually brought them around. When you had the visit of a president (Bill) Clinton, PM (John) Howard, PM (Yoshiro) Mori, visit of president (Jacques) Chirac. It was actually the post-test diplomacy, which I think anybody who is in the field of diplomacy, should look at and seek to draw lessons,” he said.

“I was at that time posted in Japan and it was a relationship that was particularly affected by the nuclear tests. But we always drew from the prime minister’s confidence that we would find a way of settling it down and indeed today when I look at that relationship, I marvel at the wisdom and the maturity with which prime minister Vajpayee got all of us to look at that particular challenge,” Jaishankar said.

India conducted five nuclear tests of advanced weapon designs in May, 1998 at the Pokhran range in Rajasthan.

Jaishankar said Vajpayee also transformed the relationship with the US in the post Cold War environment. He said Vajpayee also imparted continuity and stability into our ties with Russia.

Vajpayee served as prime minister thrice — first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999 and then for a full term between 1999 and 2004.

The lecture was delivered by Kausikan, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore. Kausikan is currently serving as chairman of the Middle East Institute at National University of Singapore.

  • UP: Moradabad college clarifies hijab students can enter but burkhas not allowed

UP: Moradabad college clarifies hijab students can enter but burkhas not allowed

    [ad_1]

Moradabad: Reports of Hindu College in Moradabad Uttar Pradesh reportedly denying entry to students wearing burkha and hijab emerged on Thursday. However, the college authorities clarified that the ban is on burkha alone, and hijabs are allowed.

On January 1, the college sanctioned a new dress code – a uniform of grey and white. As such, burkha-clad students were stopped at the entrance following which a protest ensued.

The Quint, in its recent article, spoke to the chief proctor of the Hindu college who made it clear that the college is not discriminating against anyone on the basis of religion. The officer said burkha-clad students can change into their uniforms in the changing room provided inside the gate.

“It provides the students with the safety and privacy to take off their burqa and go to their classes. They can keep their hijab on in class. There is no restriction on the hijab in the classrooms,” as quoted by The Quint.

According to the Moradabad district leader of the Samajwadi Chatra Sabha Aslam Chaudhry the students are reportedly fine with the college’s changing room decision.

“Students were being stopped at the gate just because of their clothing. We had a problem with that and so took it up with the college authorities. They agreed to allow students with hijab to enter the classes, and said that they have to take off their burqa in the changing room inside the college. The students seem to be fine with that so we have no issues either,” he was quoted by The Quint.

For some students, the process is cumbersome and disrespectful.

“I came to fill my forms a few days ago but was asked to take off my burqa outside the gate. It was very humiliating to take off my burqa at the gate like this, even with the uniform underneath,” one of the students said.

The Hindu college was established in 1911 as a middle school and was subsequently converted into an intermediate college and then a post-graduate college in 1950. A high percentage of Muslim students study here.

  • Telangana BJP demands scrapping of controversial GO

Telangana BJP demands scrapping of controversial GO

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Leaders and activists of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on Monday tried to lay siege to Telangana Chief Minister’s official residence Pragathi Bhavan in support of the demand of teachers to amend the Government Order 317 to enable spouses to work in the same district.

Police detained the protestors when they tried to advance towards Pragathi Bhavan and shifted them to Panjagutta police station.

A police constable was injured when he fell on the windscreen of the bus when he was allegedly pushed by the protestors who were detained and being shifted to the police station.

BJP minority morcha activists also tried to advance towards the Chief Minister’s official residence but were detained by police. The protestors were physically lifted and shifted to waiting police vehicles.

Government school teachers had on Sunday staged a protest at Pragathi Bhavan demanding the scrapping of or amendment to the GO, saying injustice was being done to them.

Meanwhile, BJP state President Bandi Sanjay Kumar has demanded that the GO be scrapped immediately. He said the BRS government has kept the problem pending for two years.

Sanjay alleged hundreds of teachers were suffering due to the lacunae in the GO. He said as transfers of spouses were stopped in 13 districts, this was causing severe hardships to teachers. He claimed that 34 teachers committed suicide due to the GO.

The BJP leader said if the government failed to scrap or amend the GO, teachers will be forced to go on strike.

Sanjay condemned the arrest of teachers who were staging protests along with their children. He urged the police not to use force against teachers and reminded them that they are also government employees.

The BJP leader said if the BRS failed to resolve the demand of teachers, the BJP would amend the GO and ensure justice to teachers after coming to power in the state.

The GO was issued on December 6, 2021 with a zonal system in allocation of jobs. The zonal system was introduced after Telangana was reorganised into 33 districts from 10 in 2016.

Microsoft invests billions of dollars in ChatGPT developer OpenAI

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft on Monday announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar investment in OpenAI, the developer behind AI-driven ChatGPT which has become a rage.

The tech giant, which infused $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, did not divulge the investment amount in the “third phase of our long-term partnership with OpenAI”. Earlier reports had claimed Microsoft may infuse up to $10 billion in OpenAI.

“We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratise AI as a new technology platform,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft.

“In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organisations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications,” Nadella added.
