Committee formed to probe against WFI; Mary Kom, Yogeshwar Dutt included

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced on Monday that the oversight committee formed to probe into the sexual harassment allegations levelled against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will consist of five members, led by Olympic medalist Mary Kom.

The oversight committee will also administer and manage the day-to-day affairs of the wrestling body “as a purely interim measure”.

A letter from the Union Sports Ministry noted that wrestlers had made allegations of sexual harassment against the president, officials and coaches of the federation and the Ministry took a serious look into the matter and asked the federation for a reply within 72 hours on January 18. Following that, the WFI submitted its response to the ministry via a letter on January 20.

Also, the Ministry received information from prominent athletes, “which prima facie warrants certain action(s), and the Ministry is of the considered view that the Wrestling Federation of India has not discharged its duties with respect to redressal of players’ grievances and conduct of the business of the Federation in a professional manner.”

“Therefore, considering the unprecedented situation which calls for immediate measures to ameliorate the grievances of sportspersons, and to promote good governance in the WFI, the Ministry, in consonance with provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011 “Sports Code” and in compliance with the principles of the International Olympic Committee policy on safeguarding athletes from harassment and abuse in sports and the principles of Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace Act 2013, hereby instructs the Executive Committee of the WFI to abstain with immediate effect, as an interim measure, from administering and managing the day-to-day activities of the Federation, until further orders and hereby appoints an Oversight Committee as a purely interim measure,” read the letter by the Ministry.

The composition for the Oversight Committee was announced to be as follows”
-MC Mary Kom, boxer and Olympic medalist and chairperson of the Athletes Commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)
-Yogeshwar Dutt, wrestler and Olympic medalist, a member of the Executive Council of IOA.

-Dhyanchand awardee and former badminton player Trupti Murgunde.

-Sports Authority of India (SAI) member Radhica Sreeman

    • ex-CEO Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Cdr Rajesh Rajagopalan (Retd)
The following will be terms of reference for the Oversight Committee:
      i. To enquire into the allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment and/or intimidation, financial irregularities and administrative lapses, levelled by prominent sportspersons;
ii. To undertake day-to-day administration of the Wrestling Federation of India.
iii. The Oversight Committee will complete the enquiry at the earliest, by four weeks.
Earlier, speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Sunday, Anurag Thakur said that the Centre has heard all the players pertaining to allegations levelled against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and added all the activities of the tournament were stopped immediately pending an inquiry by the probe committee.
“Assistant Secretary WFI was sacked and an oversight committee will begin an impartial probe so that everything gets clear,” Anurag Thakur said.
Meanwhile, the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) Annual General Body Meeting (AGM), which was supposed to start at 10 am on Sunday in Ayodhya, was called off amid the ongoing battle between the wrestlers and its governing body in the country.
Following the wrestlers’ protest, this meeting was seen as being of utmost importance.
The development comes after the central government on Saturday evening suspended WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar. Along with this, the activities of WFI were immediately banned till the completion of the investigation into the allegations of the wrestlers.
After late-night parleys with the protesting star grapplers, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday night announced that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will ‘step aside’ from the day-to-day affairs of the WFI till the ‘oversight committee’ led by Olympian MC Mary Kom completes its inquiry into the allegations against him.
The probe committee has been given a mandate of four weeks to submit its report, the minister added.
The wrestlers, who were protesting at Jantar Mantar, called off their protest after a meeting with Union Sports Minister Thakur on Friday.
However, WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh refuted the allegations and claimed he would expose the ‘political conspiracy’ in a press conference in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda.
Singh had earlier denied all allegations against him and said that the protesting wrestlers should have approached the Federation earlier.
Singh also claimed that 97 per cent of wrestlers were with the WFI and those who were taking part in the protests were pressured to do so. He also vehemently denied any incident of sexual harassment. “There has been no incident of sexual harassment. If such a thing has happened, then I will hang myself,” the WFI president said while addressing a press conference in the national capital on Wednesday. (ANI)

CBI summons Jagan’s MP cousin in Vivekananda murder case

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy for questioning in his uncle and former Andhra Pradesh minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

Avinash Reddy, a cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has been asked to appear before CBI officials in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP, however, is reported to have conveyed his inability to appear on January 24 due to his busy schedule in Pulivendula and has sought another date. He assured the central agency that he will fully cooperate with it in the investigation.

The CBI served the notice on the day when it conducted search at the offices of Avinash Reddy and his father Bhaskar Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy, uncle of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered at his residence in Kadapa on March 15, 2019, a few days before the election.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him. He was killed hours before he was to launch YSR Congress Party’s election campaign in Kadapa.

Though three Special Investigation Teams (SITs) conducted the probe, they failed to solve the mystery.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Sunitha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The CBI filed a charge sheet in the murder case on October 26, 2021 and followed it up with a supplementary charge sheet on January 31, 2022

In November, 2022, the Supreme Court transferred to a CBI court in Hyderabad the trial and probe into the larger conspiracy behind the murder. The apex court observed that doubts raised by Sunitha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

  • Our bowling lacked heat in crucial matches in last two World Cups: Irfan Pathan

Our bowling lacked heat in crucial matches in last two World Cups: Irfan Pathan

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan opined that Team India’s bowling lacked heat during the previous two ICC T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022 and going forward in the 50-over WC this year, he wants to see two bowlers who have sheer pace or variations, which will make them less dependent on pitches in India.

Team India have had a comprehensive start to the new year with some impressive displays in the ODI format against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. With the ODI series against New Zealand already secured with a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, there have been a lot of positives to look back on, both in the batting and bowling department.

In an exclusive interaction with Star Sports, Irfan Pathan spoke on Mohammed Shami’s performance in the second ODI against New Zealand and what areas India should improve on, in their quest for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.

“India need to focus on bowling. It is very important to plan what combination we should be playing and which bowlers should get a chance, depending on how they make the most of the pitches. The biggest problem here, is that the pitches are flat and our bowling is not up to the mark and that is what we have seen in the last two T20 World Cups against Pakistan as well as against England in the semi-finals,” said Pathan on ‘Follow the Blues’.

“Our bowling definitely lacked heat. So, this is what I personally want to see going forward, that we have two bowlers who do not require the special pitches that we expect. They have their respective skills either by pace or the variation and I think that the team management and the selectors and everyone, even the captain Rohit Sharma is going in the right direction,” added Pathan.

Pathan also said that he liked pace veteran Mohammed Shami’s performance in the second ODI, whose spell of 3/18 proved to be instrumental in bundling out a powerful Kiwi batting lineup for just 108. The former all-rounder spoke of how he liked Shami setting up the dismissal of opener Finn Allen in the first over.

“Everything started from there itself because in the start we kept bowling then with a little bit of variation that was there in his wrists, getting the ball in was very effective. The three wickets that were taken by him, out of which he got two in his first spell and then dismissing Bracewell with a bouncer, who could have been a threat to team India,” added Pathan.

“Changing the angle against him according to the situation, he used the pitch well bowling a bouncer and took his wicket. So, each and every wicket was very crucial, his spell was very impressive and he needed a wicket desperately because his performance was not up to the mark, especially in the last seven matches. And after a very long time, he got those three wickets which were very important and very impressive as well,” concluded Pathan.

Police beat African-American man like ‘human pinata’: Lawyers

    [ad_1]

Washington: A 29-year-old African-American man, who died on January 10 of unspecified injuries just three days after he was stopped by police in Memphis for reckless driving, was beaten like a “human pinata”, according to lawyers for the victim’s family.

The Memphis Police Department has fired five officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr. and Justin Smith — following the incident on January 7, reports the BBC.

All the five officers are African-American.

On Monday, Tyre Nichols’ family watched footage of his encounter with police and described a violent, disturbing scene.

“My son was a beautiful soul,” Rowvaughn Wells, the victim’s mother told mediapersons. “Nobody is perfect, but he was damn near.”

She said he had not used drugs, nor carried weapons, and did not like confrontation and called his death a “murder” by police.

The day Nichols was stopped by Memphis police, he had been on his way to Shelby Farms Park, Wells said, where “he liked to skateboard and watch each evening’s sunset”.

City officials have said police officers pulled over Nichols for reckless driving and that two “confrontations” occurred during the stop.

According to authorities, the first happened as officers approached the vehicle being driven by Mr Nichols, and he attempted to flee on foot.

They said the second confrontation happened when officers tried to arrest him.

Nichols then complained of shortness of breath and was taken by ambulance to hospital, police said, where he was listed in a critical condition.

Officials said Nichols had “succumbed to his injuries” on January 10, but they provided no further detail.

An official cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

At the Monday press conference, a lawyer for the Nichols family, Antonio Romanucci, described the encounter as “an unadulterated, unabashed, non-stop beating of this young boy for three minutes”.

“Not only was it violent, it was savage,” the BBC quoted Romanucci as saying.

Nichols had tried to escape police to run home, his family said, alleging he was beaten by police less than 73 metres from his mother’s house, where he lived.

  • PM Shehbaz Sharif orders inquiry into power outage in Pakistan

PM Shehbaz Sharif orders inquiry into power outage in Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an inquiry into the power outage in Pakistan that took place at around 7:34 am on Monday and left many cities including Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Islamabad without electricity, Geo TV reported.0

According to a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy, the national grid’s frequency dropped around 7:34 am, leading to a “widespread breakdown” in the electricity system. Additionally, it stated that Warsak was the starting point for the repair of grid stations.

However, electricity has still not been fully restored nationwide, which is hindering companies and the daily lives of more than 220 million people.

The outage lasted for more than 16 hours, especially when temperatures were forecasted to fall to around 4 degrees Celsius (39°F) in Islamabad and 8 degrees Celsius (46°F) in Karachi, according to Geo TV.

The blackout, which Energy Minister Khurram Dastagir claimed was caused by a power surge, is the second significant grid breakdown in three months and adds to the nearly daily blackouts Pakistan’s population experiences.

The power outage occurred after a technical fault was reported in the transmission line from Guddu to Quetta, causing the reduction of the power frequency from the optimum level, AAJ News reported citing sources.

Sources revealed that Sindh, Punjab, and Islamabad regions were impacted by the power breakdown. According to sources, the complete restoration of electricity might take time. It is the second power outage reported over the past four months in Pakistan which is currently dealing with the energy crisis and high energy costs.

Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO), which provides electricity to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal and parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) said that the power supply to 117 grid stations of its company has been suspended, as per the news report.

IESCO tweeted, “Power supply to 117 grid stations of ISCO has been suspended yet no clear reason has been given by the Region Control Center. ISCO management is in constant communication with the concerned authorities.”

RBI extends deadline for locker agreements renewal till Dec 31

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday extended the deadline for renewal of locker agreements between customers and banks till December 31, 2023.

The extension was given by the central bank as it was noticed that till January 1, 2023, which was the original deadline for renewal of agreements, a large number of customers had not signed the revised agreement.

Now the banks have been directed by the RBI to complete the process in a phased manner by December 31, 2023.

However, banks have been asked to meet the intermediate milestones of 50 per cent by June 30, 2023, and 75 per cent by September 30, 2023.

In addition to this, banks have been advised to make necessary arrangements to facilitate execution of the revised agreements by ensuring the availability of stamp papers, etc, a statement by RBI said.

“Further, in cases where operations in lockers have been frozen for non-execution of agreement by January 1, 2023, the same shall be unfrozen with immediate effect,” the circular said.
