Syrian refugees cost Lebanon over $40bn since 2011: FM

    [ad_1]

Beirut: The displacement of Syrians has cost Lebanon more than $40 billion since the civil war broke out in the Arab nation in 2011, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said.

The minister made the remarks during his meeting with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka in Beirut, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Lebanon’s hosting of a big number of Syrian refugees is beyond the country’s capacity,” Bou Habib said.

The Foreign Minister also called on the international community to recognize and appreciate Lebanon’s contribution to the world by taking in millions of Syrian refugees.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Lebanon is currently facing its worst socioeconomic crisis in decades and hosts the highest number of refugees per capita and per square kilometer worldwide.

The government estimates 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 13,715 refugees of other nationalities.

Ninety percent of Syrian refugees are living in extreme poverty, with the majority of them settled in the Bekaa region.

While prices are skyrocketing due to a severe economic crisis, almost half of the Lebanese and 2/3 of the 1.5 million Syrian refugees are food insecure.

Some 90 percent of Syrians, 73 percent of Palestinian refugees, and over 50 percent of Lebanese households currently need assistance.

Lebanon has struggled to deal with emergencies like the Beirut port blast, Covid-19, and a recently declared cholera outbreak.

  • Japan power company seeks to raise household electricity prices by 30%

Japan power company seeks to raise household electricity prices by 30%

    [ad_1]

Tokyo: The Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. (TEPCO) said that it has applied to the government to raise its regulated electricity rates for households by around 30 percent from June in response to surging energy prices and the yen’s weakening.

The rate hike application, following five other major power companies which have already filed for the government’s approval to raise prices by between 28 percent and 46 percent from April, reflects a deteriorating business performance due to soaring prices of fossil fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and thermal coal for power generation, reports Xinhua news agency.

Japan’s Industry Ministry will examine details of TEPCO’s cost reduction measures and decide on the actual rate increase.

Tomoaki Kobayakawa, president of TEPCO, told reporters at a press conference that the company would have problems ensuring stable supplies of electricity if it leaves the situation as it is.

“We don’t want to place a burden on our customers, but we’ve made the tough decision,” he said.

The hike in the regulated rates would be the first for TEPCO since 2012 when it raised the rates in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

  • Marriage before 18 years cannot be annulled: Karnataka HC

Marriage before 18 years cannot be annulled: Karnataka HC

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has ruled that the marriage of a woman that has taken place before her attaining 18 years of age cannot be annulled. The bench also quashed the earlier order in this regard by a Family Court.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice P.B. Varale and Justice S. Vishvajith Shetty gave the order, while looking into the petition in this regard by a woman recently.

According to the Hindu Marriage Act Section 5 (3), the age of bridegroom should be 21 years and bride should be 18 years. The rule specifying 18 years of age for marriage is being kept out of Section 11 of the Act, the bench said. Besides for cancellation of marriage, the facts have to be in contravention to the Section 5 and rule 1, 4 and 5. Hence, the annulment of marriage won’t apply to this case, the bench said.

Petitioner Susheela from Mandya district had married Manjunath on June 15, 2012. Susheela was minor at the time of marriage. The husband came to know about this fact later and he submitted a petition to the Family Court demanding cancellation of his marriage.

The Family Court had accepted the petition and stated according to the Hindu Marriage Act the age has to be 18 years for the bride and at the time of marriage the age of the bride in this case was 16 years, 11 months and 8 days. The court had stated that the marriage won’t stand under the Section 11 of the Hindu Marriage Act.

The order was given by the Family Court on January 8, 2015 regarding the cancellation of marriage. The wife, Susheela, had appealed against the order in the High Court.

  • 7 dead in 2nd California shooting within days

7 dead in 2nd California shooting within days

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: At least seven people were shot dead by a gunman in California, just two days after one of the deadliest mass shooting incident in the US state just two days ago that claimed 10 lives.

Monday’s attack occurred at two separate locations in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay, about 50 km south of San Francisco, reports the BBC.

The police have arrested the gunman and identified him as Zhao Chunli, a 67-year-old local resident.

The first four victims were discovered at a mushroom farm at 2.22 p.m., while the other three were found at a nearby trucking business later.

A motive for the attack is yet to be established.

Addressing a news conference on Monday night, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said that the suspect was arrested after driving himself to a local police station at around 4.40 p.m.

She said that he found with a semi-automatic pistol that may have been used in the attack, and is currently “co-operating” with police.

Corpus added that an eighth victim is being treated in hospital and is in critical condition.

“This kind of shooting is horrific. It’s a tragedy we hear about far too often, but today it’s hit home here in San Mateo County,” the BBC quoted the Sheriff as saying.

Monday’s attack comes as the state is still mourning the deaths in majority-Asian Monterey Park during celebrations for the Lunar New Year on Saturday night.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom said: “At the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when I get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy upon tragedy.”

The 72-year-old gunman of the mass shooting in Monterey Park was found dead on Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot injury after a standoff with police officers.

Five women and five men were killed, while another 10 people suffered injuries in the tragic incident that occurred at 10.22 p.m. on Saturday night in Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a popular ballroom dance facility operated for about 30 years, when it was hosting an event to celebrate the countdown to the Chinese Lunar New Year.

The shooter was identified as Huu Can Tran, an Asian likely of Vietnamese descent, and a motive for the mass shooting is yet to be determined.

Monterey Park, a city of 61,000 residents located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles, has a majority, or 65 per cent, Asian-American population.

President Joe Biden had issued a proclamation honoring the victims, ordering flags to fly at half-staff at the White House and other federal buildings until sunset on Thursday.

The Saturday shooting was the second within a week in California, where six people had been killed on January 16 in Goshen.

A 16-year-old and a 10-month-old were among the victims in what police said was likely a gang-related attack.

The US grapples with gun violence as there aren’t strict nationwide gun laws and a strong movement backed by Republicans against gun control by literally and very broadly interpreting a Constitutional provision on the right to possess weapons.

As a result, even states like California that have strict gun laws face an influx of illegal weapons from states with lax laws.

According to the non-profit group that runs the Gun Violence Archive collating weapon incidents, there have already been 36 mass shootings this year while there were 647 last year.

  • ‘Poland would request authorisation from Germany to send tanks to Ukraine’

‘Poland would request authorisation from Germany to send tanks to Ukraine’

    [ad_1]

Warsaw: Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that his government would request authorisation from Germany to send the Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

But he also said that Poland would send the tanks to Ukraine, even if authorisation was not granted, reports the BBC.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came a day after German Foreign Minister Anna Baerbock said on Sunday that she “would not stand in the way” of Poland if it were to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, adding that Warsaw was yet to ask for export permission.

“For the moment the question has not been asked, but if we were asked we would not stand in the way,” she told France’s LCI TV.

In response to her statement, Morawiecki said on Monday that “even if ultimately we did not get this consent, within the framework of a small coalition… we will still hand over our tanks, together with others, to Ukraine”.

Also on Monday, the Polish president’s foreign policy adviser, Marcin Przydacz, said he welcomed Baerbock’s announcement, but would prefer to hear Germany’s position confirmed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“It turns out that through talks and diplomatic actions, Poland is able to change the German position,” Przydacz told Polish Radio.

Speaking to the BBC on the development, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Germany had the power to “save the lives of many Ukrainian soldiers”.

He appealed to all countries willing to send Leopard 2 tanks to “immediately, officially request the German government to allow delivery of these tanks to Ukraine”.

“This is the move that will make the whole situation crystal clear and we will see where it takes Germany. This is something that needs to be done right away and everything will become obvious,” he told the BBC on Monday.

Kuleba later told Ukrainian national TV that he was “confident” Germany would supply the tanks eventually.

“We already received British Challenger. They said it would be impossible… Every time in the end we obtained the desired result. We will have it this time as well.”

Last week, Morawiecki had said that Poland was ready to provide 14 Leopard 2s for Ukraine.

Polish government official however opined that the 14 tanks will have a limited impact on Ukraine’s fighting capacity and that Warsaw would ultimately want Germany and other NATO allies to also send their own Leopards.

The Leopard 2 tanks were specifically designed to compete with the Russian T-90 tanks, which are being used in the ongoing invasion, the BBC reported.

There are believed to be more than 2,000 of them worldwide and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said about 300 of them would help ensure a Russian defeat.

Under current regulations, Germany must also sanction any re-export of its tanks by other countries, such as Poland.
