  • “Lakhon Taare Aasmaan Mein, Ek Magar Dhoonde Na Mila”

“Lakhon Taare Aasmaan Mein, Ek Magar Dhoonde Na Mila”

    [ad_1]

The very popular song “Lakhon Taare Aasmaan Mein, Ek Magar Dhoonde Na Mila” (lakhs of stars are in the sky but not one is found by searching ) from the black and white era film “Hariyali aur Raasta” seems to become apt today when increasing light pollution denudes stars in the sky.

Though the problem is not dominant in India but more in the developed world where skyglow of the lights from New York skyscrapers allow virtually no star gazing, it is slowly becoming a problem in the urban cities India  where besides air pollution, light pollution too is becoming an issue.

The growing light pollution is still not recognised very much. Cities are slowly losing out their night skies in India.

While air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, land pollution is being tackled for past sometime nothing much seems to be done about light pollution.

Scientists dealing with light pollution feel that it is as much an environmental problem and should be treated as such.

Light pollution is the excess amount of light in the night sky in urban areas.

Nocturnal animals are particularly disoriented if the distinction between night and day is not clearly demarcated.

At times thinking it is the day they tend to venture out. Their feeding and sleep patterns are affected.

Internationally efforts are being made so that humans do not lose out on their natural heritage of starry skies which have given rise to artwork including poems, music and paintings besides being at the source of much our science and philosophy.

The dark-sky movement is a campaign by people to reduce light pollution. It emphasizes reduction of energy use, normal ecosystem, and preserve the night sky pure for star gazers and scientists.

A starry night sky is slowly becoming something unseen for the new generations. Just looking at the sky packed with stars and letting one’s imagination go wild …. each star a sun …perhaps with number of planets rotating around it like our solar system…. there may be life and civilization,   is something of the past.

Looking at the stars exposes us to the awesome enormity of the Universe and makes us humans humble knowing our true position in it.

In the early days of navigation, we depended completely on night-sky to take us to our destination looking at the different fixed constellations of stars on our route.

International Dark Sky Association established the International Dark Sky Places Program in 2001 and more than one hundred Parks, Communities, Reserves, and Sanctuaries have been declared as International Dark Sky Places.

Every year, the Globe at Night an international community science campaign raises awareness about the impact of light pollution by inviting community scientists to measure and submit night sky brightness observations which have been collected through the whole year. They are then compared to measurements from prior years in the same month to provide a comprehensive view of the changes to the night sky quality worldwide.

The international team of 51,351 citizen scientist made observations of naked-eye stellar visibility from 2011 through 2022.

It is alarming that the project has found that light pollution is doubling globally every eight years.

Between 2011 and 2022, global sky brightness increased by an estimated 9.6% per year.

The data was collected through the community science project, NOIRLab’s Globe at Night.

On global level there seems that the policies to control light pollution seems to have little effect.

These observations measure skyglow, the brightening of the night sky. The satellites primarily measure light emitted vertically which say that about 2 per cent global sky brightness increases every year though the

observations of the night sky from the ground where the light is  emitted horizontally also the global increase of sky brightness has been 9.6 per cent.

Light pollution is growing at 9.6% per year – doubling in less than eight years.

One of the changes globally has been the loss of darkness at night over much of the planet.

“At this rate of change, a child born in a location where 250 stars were visible would be able to see only about 100 by the time they turned 18,” according to  Christopher Kyba, a researcher at the German Research Centre for Geosciences and lead author of the paper detailing these results.

Bright sky at night means we are using energy inefficiently and increasing environmental impacts.

  • India, Pakistan came ‘too close’ to nuclear conflagration: Pompeo

India, Pakistan came ‘too close’ to nuclear conflagration: Pompeo

    [ad_1]

New York: India and Pakistan came “too close” to a nuclear conflagration during the 2019 confrontation with both sides believing the other was preparing to deploy nuclear weapons, according to former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He recounted in his book, “Never Give an Inch”, his frantic night-time diplomatic efforts to get the neighbours to stand down after getting a call from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warning him that he believed Pakistan was readying nuclear weapons for a strike and India was considering its own escalation.

“I do not think the world properly knows just how close the India-Pakistan rivalry came to spilling over in a nuclear conflagration,” he wrote.

But, he added, “the truth is, I don’t know precisely the answer either. I just know it was too close”.

He was woken up at night while he was on a visit to Hanoi with a call from Jaishankar who told him that “he believed the Pakistanis had begun to prepare their nuclear weapons for a strike”.

“India, he informed me, was contemplating its own escalation. I asked him to do nothing and give us a minute to sort things out,” Pompeo wrote.

Working with John Bolton, who was then the US National Security Adviser, from their Hanoi hotel room he “reached the actual leader of Pakistan. General (Qamer Javed) Bajwaa”, he wrote.

“I told him what the Indians had told me. He said it wasn’t true. As one might expect, he believed the Indians were preparing their own nuclear weapons for deployment.

“It took us a few hours, and remarkably good work by our teams on the ground in New Delhi and Islamabad, to convince each side that neither was to convince each side or the other was not preparing for nuclear war,” Pompeo added.

Taking credit for the de-escalation, he wrote: “No other nation could have done that, but we did that night to avoid a horrible outcome.”

He acknowledged the work of Kenneth Juster, who was the then US envoy in New Delhi, calling him “an incredibly capable ambassador” who “loves India and its people”.

Pompeo, who was the director of the Central Intelligence Agency before becoming the Secretary of State, recounted in the book his four years in former President Donald Trump’s cabinet.

The book subtitled, “Fighting for the America I Love”, lays out how he aggressively implemented Trump’s ‘America First’ vision.

Writing about his efforts to deepen ties with New Delhi, Pompeo wrote that he “made India the fulcrum of my diplomacy to contract Chinese aggression”.

“I chose to devote serious quantities of time and effort to make India the next great American ally,” he added.

Hyderabad: Municipal authorities in Hyderabad are gearing up to demolish six-storeyed commercial building which was gutted in a huge fire last week while rescue workers have still not found any remains of two missing persons.

Nearly a week after the fire incident, the rescue workers continued to look for remains of the missing persons in the huge rubble.

Skeletal remains of one person were found on January 21 and the same were preserved at Gandhi Hospital for DNA analysis.

Three workers Waseem, Zaheer and Junaid were reported missing after a huge fire broke out in the building. Some survivors said the three persons had gone to collect their belongings but were trapped.

A massive fire broke out on January 19 in the building housing the garment store at Nallagutta on Minister Road in Secunderabad.

Two fire service officers were injured while trying to douse the fire, which raged for almost two days.

After the fire, the building’s structural strength has been severely compromised. With experts advising for demolishing the building, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated the process.

The municipal body has called for bids to pull down the building. It issued a tender notice on an emergency basis with Wednesday as the deadline to submit the bids.

GHMC wants the interested party to use the latest technology in pulling down the structure to avoid collateral damage to adjoining structures. The tender value has been fixed at Rs 33.86 lakh for demolition of 1,890 square metres structure, transport of debris and exercise of safety precautions.

According to officials, GHMC will charge the owner with the cost of demolition. The owner had constructed two upper floors without permission and no firefighting equipment was installed inside.

  • Kolkata: SFI seeks permission to air BBC documentary on Modi at Presidency university

Kolkata: SFI seeks permission to air BBC documentary on Modi at Presidency university

    [ad_1]

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) of Presidency University in Kolkata has asked for permission from the university’s administration to show the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Gujarat riots in 2002 on January 27 at 4 pm.

This comes as several students gathered at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union office in New Delhi on Tuesday for a screening of the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ claimed the varsity administration cut power and internet to stop the event, prompting them to stage a protest after stones were thrown at them.

The Fraternity Movement, a students’ group at the University of Hyderabad also held a special screening of the first episode of the documentary on Saturday.

The SFI at Presidency University said it has sent an email to university officials to reserve the badminton court on campus, where the documentary will be shown on a large screen. The university administration has yet to respond to the request.

What is the BBC documentary on Modi?

The new two-part documentary series of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) ‘India: The Modi Question‘ focuses on the 2002 Gujarat riots that killed thousands and left millions homeless, especially in the Muslim community, and the role played by the then chief minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The documentary which is aired only in the United Kingdom looks at the escalating tension between the Muslim community and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as Hindu right-wing organisations – Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The first part of the two-part series, reportedly reveals ‘never-seen-before’ or ‘restricted’ documents in detail. These reports were never published to the public.

The summary of the report mentions statements such as “extend of violence much greater than reported”, “widespread and systematic rape of Muslim women”, “violence politically motivated”, “aim was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”, “their systematic of violence has all the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing”.

Speaking to the BBC, former foreign secretary, Jack Straw (2001-2006) said he was personally involved in the investigations as the data and results provided were alarming.

“I was very worried about it. I took a great deal of personal interest because India is an important country with whom we (the UK) have relations. And so, we had to handle it very carefully,” Straw told the BBC, adding, “What we did was establish an inquiry and have a team go to Gujarat and find out for themselves what had happened. And they produced a very thorough report.

    What was India’s response?

The BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi was criticised harshly by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.

It was described as a ‘propaganda piece’ with bias intended to advance a specific ‘discredited’ narrative.

“The documentary is a reflection on the agency that has made it. We think it is a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias, lack of objectivity, and continuing colonial mindset are blatantly visible. Can’t dignify such a film,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

‘KCR has time to pay tributes to titular Nizam…’: Telangana BJP chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Bharat Janata Party Telangana unit president Bandi Sanjay on Tuesday came down heavily on State Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and said that people of the state will soon be liberated from the autocratic rule of KCR.

Addressing the BJP Telangana two-day-long State Executive meeting, which concluded in Mahbubnagar yesterday, Bandi Sanjay terming CM KCR as the 8th Nizam, said, “People of Telangana will be liberated very soon from the autocratic rule of KCR”.

Bandi Sanjay’s reactions came against the backdrop of Bharat Rashtra Samithi chief KCR’s decision to skip the all-party meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December last year under the rubric of India G-20 presidency.

“Telangana CM KCR has ample time to pay tributes to the titular Nizam (who passed away last week) and offered condolences to his family members, whose ancestors have tortured Telangana people and sucked their blood,” he said.

The BJP leader also heaped praises on PM Modi saying that India is on the way to becoming ‘Vishwa Guru’ (world leader).

“Swami Vivekanand, whose birth name was also Narendra, had predicted that India would become Vishwa Guru in the 21st century, and it is coming true under Narendra Modi’s leadership,” he said adding that under the leadership of PM Modi, India gained presidency for G-20 group, which is a big opportunity.

Earlier in December last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired an all-party meeting to underscore the significance of India’s presidency of the G20 and brief the leaders about the government’s approach.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar were among the leaders present at the meeting.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik were among those present at the meeting which took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, but Telangana CM KCR abstained from attending the meeting.
