Israel sees surge in foreign tourists’ hotel overnight stays

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: The number of overnight stays of foreign tourists in hotels across Israel surged 785 per cent year on year in 2022, revealed an annual report issued by the country’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

The nights foreign tourists spent in Israeli hotels totaled 7.1 million last year, up from 2.19 million in 2020 and 802,000 in 2021, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying.

However, the number of overnight stays last year was still significantly lower than the 12.13 million tourist stays registered in 2019, before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the beginning of 2022, Israel has gradually lifted entry restrictions on foreigners, thus increasing the monthly number of foreign tourist stays from 76,000 in January to 910,000 in November and 643,000 in December.

Overnight stays of Israelis in hotels in the country reached an all-time high of 15.93 million in 2022, breaking the previous record of 13.69 million registered in 2019.

Telangana HC asks state govt to conduct Republic day event at Parade grounds

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: As a pushback to the Telangana government’s call to not celebrate Republic day at Parade grounds, the state High Court on Wednesday asked the government to adhere to the Defence ministry’s formulations for the Republic day at Parade grounds.

The state government reportedly has told Raj Bhavan that it may organise the R-Day celebration separately, breaking with tradition for the second year in a row by not holding a unified formal ceremony at Secunderabad’s Parade Ground.

In 2022, owing to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, KCR decided not to hold any Republic Day celebrations at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad.

On Thursday, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said that her office did not receive any communication from the government on conducting the upcoming Republic Day event.

The rift between the Telangana Governor and the KCR government has deepened over the last two years. KCR is visibly upset about the Governor delaying the passing of 8 legislative bills in the assembly.

Soundararajan, a former Tamil Nadu BJP chief, took over as Telangana governor in 2019, but her relationship with the KCR government soured within a year. BRS leaders chastised her for acting like a ‘BJP agent,’ while the governor claimed Raj Bhavan personnel were being humiliated.

  • Ex-Lebanese PM Hassan Diab charged in Beirut blast investigation

Ex-Lebanese PM Hassan Diab charged in Beirut blast investigation

    [ad_1]

Beirut: Former Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has been charged with homicide with probable intent over the devastating Port of Beirut explosions in 2020 that killed at least 218 people.

Tarek Bitar, a Lebanese judge tasked with investigating the explosions, also charged Abbas Ibrahim, chief of Lebanese General Security, State Security director Major General Tony Saliba, and former Lebanese army commander Jean Kahwaji, reports Xinhua news agency.

Prosecutor-General Ghassan Oueidat, who was also charged in the Beirut blast investigation, announced on Tuesday his rejection of the decision issued earlier by Bitar, arguing that the judge was suspended from his investigation over a year ago.

Bitar’s work had been interrupted for over a year following several complaints filed against him by two former ministers facing charges, forcing him to halt the probe.

He resumed his work on Monday after a legal opinion said he should be allowed to continue his investigation.

Primary investigations into the blast revealed that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) stored since 2014 in a warehouse at the port caused the explosions, which injured 7,000 people, caused $15 billion in property damage, and left estimated 300,000 others homeless.

The substance was stored at the warehouse after being confiscated by the Lebanese authorities from the abandoned ship MV Rhosus.

The explosion was preceded by a fire in the same warehouse.

The blast was so powerful that it physically shook the whole country of Lebanon.

It was felt in Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Israel, as well as parts of Europe, and was heard in Cyprus, more than 240 km away.

It was detected by the US Geological Survey as a seismic event of magnitude 3.3 and is considered one of the most powerful accidental artificial non-nuclear explosions in history.

BBC docu screening: Delhi Police detains 4 Jamia students

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Wednesday said they have detained four students after the Left-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) announced a plan to screen a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.

The university administration said the screening will not be allowed and that they are taking all measures to prevent people and organisations with a “vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university”.

A Delhi Police official said four SFI members were detained, just hours before the screening planned for 6 pm by the student body. The SFI called for a protest at 4 pm against the detention.

The SFI’s Jamia unit has released a poster informing the documentary will be screened at 6 pm at the MCRC lawn gate no 8.

The SFI issued a statement following the detention.

    “In an atrocious manner, Azeez, a student of Jamia Milia Islamia and SFI Jamia Unit Secretary; Nivedya, a Jamia Student and SFI South Delhi Area Vice President;
Abhiram and Tejas, both Jamia students and SFI Unit members have been detained by the Delhi Police prior to the screening of the documentary,” the SFI said.

“The SFI Jamia Unit had decided to screen the BBC documentary today on the campus,” it added.

The university administration also issued a statement, saying no permission has been sought for the screening of the documentary and it will not be allowed.

“It has come to the knowledge of the university administration that some students belonging to a political organisation have circulated a poster about screening of a controversial documentary film on the university campus today,” the university said in a statement.

The university earlier issued a memorandum/circular reiterating that no meeting/gathering of students or screening of any film shall be allowed on the campus without the permission of the competent authority.

The varsity said strict disciplinary action shall be taken against organisers in case of any violation.

“The university is taking all possible measures to prevent people/organisations having a vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university,” it said.

The SFI attempt to screen the documentary at the Jamia campus comes a day after a similar event was organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University during which students claimed that power and internet were suspended and stones were thrown at them.

  • JSP’s main objective is to end ‘devil’s rule’ in Andhra Pradesh: Pawan Kalyan

JSP’s main objective is to end ‘devil’s rule’ in Andhra Pradesh: Pawan Kalyan

    [ad_1]

Vijayawada: Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan on Wednesday said that ending the “devil’s rule” in Andhra Pradesh is the main objective of his Jana Sena Party (JSP)

After performing a special puja for his campaign vehicle ‘Varahi’ at the Kanaka Durga temple, he told mediapersons that from today onwards, “Varahi’s goal is to end the devil’s rule in the state”.

Terming the rule of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) as devil’s rule, he said that his foremost responsibility is to end it.

Accompanied by Nadendla Manohar and other JSP leaders, Pawan Kalyan participated in various rituals conducted by the priests.

Large number of JSP workers and Pawan Kalyan’s fans had gathered at the temple to welcome him.

The JSP leader, who performed puja for the campaign vehicle at two temples in Telangana on Tuesday, said that the people of two Telugu states should live with unity and develop and prosper.

After the puja, Pawan left for the JSP office at Mangalagiri in Varahi. A large number of people had gathered enroute to catch a glimpse of the actor.

His supporters showered petals on him and welcomed him with huge garlands. The procession led to a long traffic snarl on the Prakasam barrage.

He is scheduled to address party workers at the JSP office later in the day.

Gearing up for the 2024 electoral battle in Andhra Pradesh, Pawan Kalyan had unveiled the specially designed vehicle last month which is equipped with high-security features and also has a public address system as well as CCTV cameras.

The four-wheeler will be used by the JSP leader to campaign across Andhra Pradesh, where elections are due in April-May 2024.

Power star, as the actor is popularly known, had planned to launch the state-wide tour after Dussehra but the same has been postponed and he is now likely to embark on a visit in next few weeks.

UP: Police deployed after protest against Pathaan by right-wing

    [ad_1]

Sitapur: The district administration on Wednesday deployed armed police personnel at a multiplex here, a day after a right-wing group held a protest here warning against screening the Bollywood movie “Pathaan”.

The new Shah Rukh Khan film was released on Wednesday in 5,000 screens across India. It had faced calls for a boycott over its song “Besharam Rang”.

Hundred of workers of the Rashtriya Hindu Sher Sena, led by its district president Desh Deepak, staged a protest on Tuesday against the screening of the film, alleging that it hurt Hindu sentiments.

Following the protest, the administration had deployed PAC and police personnel in adequate numbers to avoid any untoward incident, police said.

The management of a multiplex here told that all the 10 shows scheduled here are housefull.

Circle Officer (City) Sitapur Rajkumar Rao said protection will be provided to multiplexs and additional force has been deployed because of the protest staged on Tuesday.

  • Anil Antony’s views on BBC documentary ‘immature,’ says Tharoor

Anil Antony’s views on BBC documentary ‘immature,’ says Tharoor

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday rejected the views of Anil Antony, son of party colleague and former defence minister A K Antony, on a controversial BBC documentary on Gujarat riots and termed as “immature” his argument that it was an infringement into India’s sovereignty.

Anil had tweeted on Tuesday that placing the views of the British broadcaster over Indian institutions would undermine the sovereignty of the nation. He has since resigned from all posts he was holding in the Congress party, citing “intolerant calls” and “abuses” over the matter.

Tharoor, Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram said people of the country have the freedom to watch or not watch the BBC documentary on the 2002 riots and asked who can say the British broadcaster has no right to do a story on the topic.

The Constitution of the country guarantees all rights for us to watch a documentary, he added.

When asked about Anil’s argument that placing the views of the BBC over Indian institutions would set a “dangerous precedence” and “undermine” our sovereignty, Tharoor said he cannot agree with it.

“I feel that this is an immature stand,” he said.

“Because, the sovereignty of our country cannot be affected so easily… will it be affected if a foreign documentary is screened?….whether our national security and sovereignty are so fragile to be affected by a documentary?” he said.

The leader, however, said Anil, who had handled the digital communications of the grand old party for sometime, was a “good person” and he had not discussed the BBC documentary issue with him.

Anil, who is said to be close to Tharoor, specially thanked him for his support in the resignation letter which he sent to the party leadership on Wednesday quitting his roles in the Congress — as the Convener of KPCC Digital Media, and as the National Co-coordinator of AICC Social Media and Digital Communications Cell.”

Anil had on Tuesday tweeted that despite large differences with the BJP, those who support and place the views of the British broadcaster and of former UK foreign secretary Jack Straw, the “brain behind the Iraq war” (involving the US-led coalition in 2003) over Indian institutions are setting a dangerous precedent.

The two-part BBC documentary, which claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of that state, has been trashed by the Ministry of External Affairs as a “propaganda piece” that lacked objectivity and reflected a “colonial mindset”.
