Rajnath asks Army to continue maintaining strong vigil along LAC

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday asked top Army commanders to maintain a strong vigil along the Line of Actual Control with China as the situation in the northern sector remained “tense” due to the deployment of PLA troops.
In his address at the Army Commanders’ Conference, Singh, referring to the eastern Ladakh border row, expressed full confidence in the Army to deal with any contingency while noting that the ongoing talks for peaceful resolution of the issue will continue.
He said disengagement and de-escalation is the “best way forward”, the defence ministry said.

Singh said a “whole of the government” approach is being followed to ensure the availability of best weapons, equipment and clothing to the troops defending the country’s territorial integrity while braving extreme weather and hostile forces, according to the ministry.
The defence minister reaffirmed the faith of the billion-plus citizens in the Indian Army as one of the most trusted and inspiring organisations in the country.
“The situation is tense due to deployment of PLA troops in the northern sector. Our armed forces, especially the Indian Army, will have to continuously keep their vigilance in order to maintain the security of the LAC,” he said, according to sources.
The defence minister said the security of the country is the “topmost priority” for the government.
In a statement, the ministry said Singh complimented Border Roads Organisation, saying its efforts have led to the incomparable improvement of road communication in the border areas.

The five-day Army Commanders’ Conference began on Monday. It is deliberating on India’s national security challenges along the borders with China and Pakistan and ways to boost combat capability of the force.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari also addressed the commanders.
Talking about the global geopolitical scenario, Singh said, “Unconventional and asymmetric warfare, including hybrid war will be part of the future conventional wars.”
“Cyber, information, communication, trade and finance have all become an inseparable part of future conflicts. This necessitates that Armed Forces will have to keep all these facets in consideration while planning and formulating strategies,” he said.
On the situation along the Western borders, he complimented the Army’s response to cross-border terrorism, adding the proxy war by the adversary continues.
“I compliment the excellent synergy between the Central Armed Police Forces/Police forces and the Army in tackling the menace of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
“The synergised operations in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are contributing to increased stability and peace in the region and the same should continue, and for this I again compliment the Indian Army,” Singh said.
The defence minister commended the Army for the high standard of operational preparedness and capabilities which he said he has always been experiencing first hand during his visits to forward areas.
“In the North-Eastern states too, there has been a lot of improvement in the internal security scenario following operations carried out by the Indian Army,” Singh said.
The defence minister said there is a need to ensure the use of real-time intelligence more effectively so that “we can be fully prepared to face any such future challenges.”
The defence minister lauded the Army’s efforts to develop niche technologies in collaboration with civil industries.
He also stressed that as users the armed forces must put their faith in the Indian industries and technologies. The defence minister also complimented the Army for the execution of the ‘Agniveer’ scheme.
He also reviewed an equipment display focusing on niche technology, innovation, solutions for surveillance, artificial intelligence, training, robotics, virtual reality, operational logistics etc.
The defence minister released the second edition of Indian Army UN Journal titled ‘Blue Helmet Odyssey–Changing Contours of Peacekeeping Operations in the 20th Century’.

ITBP officer killed in accident during LAC patrol in Ladakh

New Delhi/Leh, Apr 5: A 33-year-old Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officer, who was leading a patrol along the India-China LAC in Ladakh, was killed after falling into a deep gorge, officials said.
Assistant Commandant Tikam Singh Negi was killed in the line of duty in the Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on April 2.
“ITBP salutes the braveheart AC/GD Tikam Singh Negi, 24th Battalion ITBP who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Ladakh on April 2, 2023,” the force said through its official Twitter handle.
The officer was posted at this front since 2021.
A senior officer posted at the ITBP academy in Mussoorie told PTI that the soldier was an “exceptionally motivated” officer who joined the force in 2013. Negi was a good mountaineer and awarded the ‘sword of honour’ in 2014, that is given to the best cadet during training.
Negi was leading a long range patrol of his troops when he fell into the gorge while negotiating the treacherous LAC terrain in Ladakh, the officer said.
The mortal remains of the officer were consigned to flames at his home town in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.
The Northern Command of the Army also paid tributes to the officer, saying it “stands with the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”

The about 90,000 personnel strong ITBP was raised in the aftermath of the 1962 Chinese aggression and it is tasked to guard the 3,488-km-long LAC on India’s eastern flank. The force is working along with the Army at this front even as the militaries of India and China are engaged in a standoff at Ladakh from 2020.–(PTI)

Over 1.5 Lac Visitors Throng Tulip Garden in First 12 Days

SRINAGAR: The Tulip Garden in central Kashmir’s district Srinagar has attracted over 1.58 lac visitors including local, national and international tourists in the first 12 days of its opening, officials said.
The Assistance Floriculture Officer (AFO) and the ground level in-charge of Tulip Garden Inam-ul-Rehman stated that the garden was made accessible to the public on March 20, 2023, and has since emerged as a significant tourist destination, with visitors coming to see the bright hues of the tulips. In his words, “A total of 1.58 lakh people visited tulip garden Srinagar in the first 12 days and which includes local, national and international visitors.”
Rehman added that the number of visitors has surpassed their expectations and the garden is receiving a positive response from visitors across the board. He said, “We are delighted to see that people are showing a keen interest in visiting the garden. The tulips are in full bloom and visitors are thoroughly enjoying the scenic beauty of the garden.”
He further informed that the garden has been adorned with over 1.6 million blooming bulbs of 68 different colourful varieties, which were imported from various parts of the world. The garden also boasts several other types of flowers, such as Daffodils, Mascaries, and Hisins.
The authorities have also made special arrangements to ensure the safety and comfort of the visitors, including garden clearance and maintenance, adequate drinking water facilities, and rain shelters.
The renowned garden, situated on the foothills of Zabarwan Range in Srinagar along the banks of the Dal Lake, is set to remain open until the end of April, and authorities anticipate a surge in visitors in the days to come. (GNS)

Unfinished work along LAC; military, diplomacy at work: Jaishankar

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said there was “unfinished work” along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and that the militaries and diplomats on both sides were working to find a solution to the issue.
Jaishankar, speaking at Network18’s ‘Rising India Summit’, deplored attempts by Rahul Gandhi to draw parallels between the situation along the LAC with China and the Ukraine conflict.
“What is today happening in Ukraine, if you follow the two sides, is one would say that they are threatened by the expansion of NATO and the character of the regime in Ukraine,” he said.
“The West would say that Russians have expansionist designs. What is the analogy between that and India-China? There is no NATO in play here, there is no regime character in play here. I just don’t see the comparison,” he said.
Jaishankar also said “canards” were floated about buffer zones being created in India’s patrolling areas.
He said since the Galwan clash of 2020, the combination of military and diplomacy has made progress, but admitted that the two sides have not been able to “sort everything out”.
“Whatever has been done is mutual and negotiated. But this is still unfinished work,” Jaishankar said about the present situation along the LAC.
He said to understand the relationship with China, one has to understand the nature of the problem between the two countries.

“The nature of the problem between India and China is that two militaries, which were not deployed at or on or very near the LAC, have done so to a great degree after May 2020. Pre-May 2020, both militaries were primarily located in the depth areas where they had permanent bases and then they would patrol out into the LAC,” he said.
“In 2020, the Chinese breached that in violation of the 1993-96 agreement and brought forces to the LAC. Obviously we countered it. As a result, you have a very, very intricate situation of very multiple close deployments which, by military assessments, is a very dangerous situation to be in,” Jaishankar said.
The minister said India had cautioned China about the situation but then “Galwan happened which was proof of how volatile the situation can be”.
“I met my Chinese counterpart in September 2020 and he accepted that this was a dangerous situation. Since then, we have been trying to pull back the forward deployment but it can only be done if there is mutual agreement,” the minister said.
Jaishankar said that India may have made “some such unilateral moves” in the past “but found it was not reciprocated by the other side”.
“Everything that we have done is on the basis of the principle of mutual and equal security which means if we move back here, they move back there,” the minister said.
“There are places where we have forward deployments but we continue to work. When it (disturbances) started in the summer of 2020, people said India could do nothing,” he said.
“My sense is that the military has done what it should do. The military and diplomacy have worked in lockstep. To take away military commanders is ridiculous. Because military commanders know the truth, know the topography, who actually knows what mutual and equal security is,” Jaishankar said.

Status Quo Maintained On LAC, Ceasefire Continues On Loc: Army Commander

SRINAGAR: During a ‘Veterans Sampark’ rally held in the outskirts of the city, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, the Northern Army Commander, stated that the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh with China has remained stable in terms of the current situation, while the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir continues. The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC) of the Northern Command, which is based in Udhampur, added that discussions have taken place at various levels to maintain the Status Quo with China on the LAC.
“The ceasefire on the borders is ongoing,” said the Army Commander, who also reported that “our units have successfully thwarted some infiltration attempts.” Regarding the situation in the hinterland, he stated that “it is largely under control,” and that “our CI/CT Grid is fully functioning with civil administration” as they work to “completely halt such incidents.”
During a rally held to honour ex-servicemen, several commanding officers including the Army Commander, Colonel of JAK RIF and Ladakh Scouts, praised Major General Govardhan Singh Jamwal (Retd), Brig Gurmeet Singh Shan, Director Sainik Welfare Dept, J&K, Brig SK Goswami, Commander 92 Inf Bde, and Brig Rajesh Sharma, Commandant JAK RIF Regimental Center. They acknowledged the sacrifices made by these heroes and stated that “we owe a debt to the heroes of this country, which can never be repaid, but the nation will always express gratitude and respect towards them.”
The Army Commander spoke about the history of JAK RIF, mentioning that the regiment was established in 1820 under the leadership of Maharaja Gulab Singh and has participated in every war since then, displaying great valor and sacrifice. He also highlighted the bravery of the regiment in the Hussainiwala Operation of 4 JAK RIF and the role it played in conquering areas like Tibet, Gilgit, Yasin, Darel, Hunza, Nagar, Chilas, and Chitral under the leadership of General Zorawar Singh.
Lt Gen Dwivedi, who took over as the Colonel of the Regiment of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and Ladakh Scouts in February 2022, explained that the purpose of the rally was to provide support and assistance to ex-servicemen, war veterans, Veer Naris, and next of kins of fallen heroes from Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir belonging to the Regiment. He added that they aim to solve their problems related to pensions and provide medical help from experts.
Regarding the Agniveers, Lt Gen Dwivedi stated that he was sure that after being associated with the regiment, some of them would join in an unbreakable bond. The ‘Veterans Sampark Rally’ was attended by over 800 ex-servicemen, war veterans, Veer Naris, and next of kins of fallen heroes from Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir belonging to the Regiment. Jammu, Mar 21: Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi Tuesday said that the status quo is maintained with China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh while ceasefire continues on the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K.
Addressing a mega ‘Veterans Sampark’ rally in Digiana areas of city outskirts, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC) of Udhampur-based Northern Command, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that the Status Quo is maintained with China on LAC amid talks at different levels.
On LoC, the Army Commander said that the ceasefire continues on the borders, adding, “There have been some infiltration attempts which have been successfully foiled by our units.”
“The situation in the hinterland is largely under control. Our CI/CT Grid is fully working with civil administration and efforts are on to stop such incidents completely,” he stated.
The commanding officers also praised the veteran heroes like Major General Govardhan Singh Jamwal, (Retd), Brig Gurmeet Singh Shan, Director Sainik Welfare Dept, J&K, Brig SK Goswami, Commander 92 Inf Bde, Brig Rajesh Sharma, Commandant JAK RIF Regimental Center stating that through this rally, India Army is honouring the ex-servicemen because of whom “we are free today.”
“We owe a debt to the heroes of this country, which can never be repaid, but the nation will always express gratitude and respect towards them,” army commander, who is also Colonel of JAK RIF and Ladakh Scouts.
“Our (JAK RIF) regiment was raised in Jammu in 1820 under the leadership of Maharaja Gulab Singh and hoisted its glory by conquering areas like Tibet, Gilgit, Yasin, Darel, Hunza, Nagar, Chilas and Chitral under the leadership of General Zorawar Singh. Our regiment has participated in every war since 1820 and has given a wonderful example of its valor and sacrifice,” he added.
“Recognizing our bravery in Hussainiwala Operation of 4 JAK RIF and our bravery in history, we were made an integral part of the Indian Army as the Jammu and Kashmir Regiment,” Lt Gen Dwivedi said.

Lt Gen Dwivedi, who took over the charge of Northern Command and Colonel of the Regiment of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and Ladakh Scouts on February 1, 2022, said, “the purpose of this rally is to reach out to the Ex-servicemen of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, their closest relatives and Veer Naris living in the nearest district of Jammu and surrounding areas, to solve their problems and anomalies related to pension and to get medical help from medical experts.”
On Agniveer, he said, “some of these Agniveers will go back to the society after completing their four years term and I am sure that after being associated with the regiment, they will also join the regiment in an unbreakable bond.”

‘Department working on several methods to prepare itself for the upcoming tourist season’
Srinagar, Mar 4 (GNS): Department of Tourism Kashmir is anticipating a comparatively much high flow of tourists this year, as over one lac tourists have already visited Valley in the recently concluded month of February.
Expressing his contentment Fazl-ul-Haseeb, the recently appointed Director for Kashmir Tourism, talking to media persons said that the Valley received over one lac tourists in the month of February alone.
Haseeb, as per GNS, said that the Department is working on several methods to prepare itself for the upcoming tourist season.
“We are working on scientific methods to calculate the number of tourists given it is an age of big data”, he said.
