Kohli breaks Test century drought; puts India in command against Australia

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Virat Kohli finally ended his Test century drought as he slammed an outstanding ton to put India in a commanding position on Day 4 of the ongoing fourth Test match against Australia here at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

At the time of tea break, India’s score read 472/5 with Kohli (135)* and Axar Patel (38)* unbeaten at the crease. The hosts still trail by just 8 runs.

Kohli ended his Test century drought as he slammed his first Test century since November 2019.

After lunch, Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and Srikar Bharat opened their hands and slammed Australian bowlers at regular intervals for boundaries.

Cameron Green was on the receiving end with Srikar Bharat smashing him for 21 runs with the help of two boundaries and two sixes in an over.

Srikar Bharat’s blistering stint at the crease came to an end as he was dismissed by Nathan Lyon for 44. The left-handed batter Axar Patel then came out to bat at the crease.

Kohli ended his Test century drought as he slammed his first Test century since November 2019. The former India captain brought up his much-needed hundred in 241 balls. It was the most-awaited ton as his last century came against Bangladesh in November 2019. With this century, he took his international century tally to 75.

Kohli continued his blistering form and slammed Mitchell Starc for brilliant two boundaries collecting 9 runs. Kohli along with Patel took India’s total beyond the 400-run mark in the 140 overs of the game.

The duo of Kohli and Patel stitched up their 50-run partnership stand –the 6th consecutive 50-run partnership for Team India.

The Indian pair remained unbeaten as the visitors ended the session at 472/5.

Earlier, Kohli and Srikar Bharat showed remarkable skill and determination to frustrate the Australian bowling attack in the opening session of Day 4.

The batting pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli were decisive in their approach and made the Australian bowlers toil hard making merry of the excellent batting conditions on offer.

Australia skipper Steve Smith introduced Cameron Green into the attack in the very first over of day 4 and the bowler concede just 4 runs. Australia started with spin with Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy bowling in tandem from both ends.

The duo of Jadeja and Kohli took India’s total beyond the 300-run mark in the 102nd over of the game. However, the 64-run partnership stand was broken by Murphy who dismissed Jadeja for 28 runs. Srikar Bharat then came out to bat.

The Indian batters rotated the strike brilliantly, not allowing the Australian bowlers to settle down while whacking the loose balls on offer.

Kohli and Srikar Bharat both were aggressors of the batting pair, smashing boundaries regularly. The duo stitched a solid 50-run partnership for Team India.

The Indian pair took India’s score beyond the 350-run mark as the first session ended.

Brief Score: Australia 480 (Usman Khawaja 180, Cameron Green 114; Ravichandran Ashwin 6-91) vs India 362/4 (Virat Kohli 135*, Shubman Gill 128; Todd Murphy 2-64). (ANI)

  • Judiciary must be allowed to interpret Constitution: SC judge Kohli

Judiciary must be allowed to interpret Constitution: SC judge Kohli

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The judiciary must be allowed to interpret the Constitution and its independence is not just a legal principle but fundamental pillar of a vibrant democracy, Justice Hima Kohli of the Supreme Court has said.

“It is imperative that all three pillars (legislature, executive and judiciary) of the State work in parallel and not in tandem, at arm’s length and not hand in hand, to give strength to the democratic system.

“This itself will preserve the independence of the judiciary and protect its autonomy and impartiality. It is equally essential to recognise the judiciary’s role in the constitutional dialogue as it acts like a safety valve for fostering our democratic values,” Justice Kohli said.

She was speaking on the subject of “Independent Judiciary: Critical for a Vibrant Democracy” at a function organised by FICCI in collaboration with Bharat Chamber of Commerce and the Indian Council of Arbitration in Kolkata on Saturday.

“Independence of the judiciary is not just a legal principle but a fundamental pillar of a vibrant democracy. The Indian judiciary has shown remarkable resilience and determination in maintaining its independence and integrity and discharging its constitutional duties,” she said.

The apex court judge spoke on various aspects related to judicial independence and said that the judiciary, by upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the government operates within the remit of its authority, promotes stability and effectiveness of democratic institutions.

It is equally essential to recognise the judiciary’s role in the constitutional dialogue as it acts like a safety valve for fostering our democratic values, she said.

“The judiciary must be allowed to interpret the Constitution and make decisions based solely on the Constitution and the laws. It is this interpretation that offers a guarantee for the Constitution to remain a living document that keeps on evolving over time, while remaining rooted in its fundamental values and principles.

“Therefore, having a robust constitutional dialogue in India, where all the branches of the State engage in a meaningful conversation with each other and at the same time, respect each other’s independence and the respective delineated roles, is the best thing for a vibrant democracy,” she said.

The judiciary also protects citizens from arbitrary exercise of power and ensures that their rights and freedom are respected and upheld, she said.

“Absent the judiciary’s role of maintaining checks and balances, democratic institutions would be vulnerable to corruption, abuse of power and erosion of the trust of the citizens in the government. The role of the courts in upholding the rule of law and providing checks and balances on other wings of the State makes the judiciary a critical pillar of democracy,” she said.

The judge referred to the imposition of the Emergency and said the judiciary was put to a severe test during the period.

“In the face of such adversity, some of the judges of the Supreme Court and at least nine High Courts had shown remarkable courage and independence. They stood up to the government’s attempts to erode judicial autonomy and protected fundamental rights of the citizens,” she said.

Justice Kohli also spoke about recent key judgements like the one which declared privacy as a fundamental right and part of right to life and personal liberty and said, “the judiciary has been at the forefront of protecting the citizens’ rights, particularly in cases relating to civil liberties, environmental protection and gender justice.”

Dealing with the role of media, she said it plays a significant role in informing the public and facilitating civic engagement.

  • Kohli wanted to teach Ganguly a lesson: Chief selector spills beans on ‘ego clash’

Kohli wanted to teach Ganguly a lesson: Chief selector spills beans on ‘ego clash’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi:: The chairman of the BCCI’s national selection committee Chetan Sharma landed in a major soup after he disclosed behind-the-scenes talks regarding team selection and also made startling revelations on star batter skipper Viral Kohli’s alleged feud with former Board president Sourav Ganguly, to a television channel, during a sting operation aired Tuesday.

Sharma claimed that the alleged strained relationship between Ganguly and Kohli involved ‘ego issues’.

The chief selector claimed that Kohli had started considering himself “bigger than the Board” and had tried to “hit back” at the former BCCI president as he felt that Ganguly had removed him from ODI captaincy.

“When the player becomes popular, he considers himself to be bigger than the Board and thinks that nobody can touch him. He feels that cricket in India would stop without him. But has that ever happened? Some of our biggest cricketing stars came and went but cricket remained the same. So he (Kohli) tried to hit back at the (former) president at that time. It was a damaging controversy. It was a classic case of a player going against the BCCI. The president represents the BCCI, isn’t it? As to whose fault it was will be judged in time but it was an attack on the BCCI. All our players are discouraged from doing this because the loss will be theirs as everyone will go against them even if the president is at the fault. There has to be some respect for the chair,” said Sharma during the sting operation.

He further claimed that ahead of the 2022 India tour of South Africa in January, Kohli brought up the matter of being removed from ODI captaincy on purpose in front of reporters because he felt that Ganguly had played a role in removing him from leadership in the 50-over format. He also accused Kohli of lying in front of the media about being removed from ODI captaincy without any communication, in order to defame Ganguly.

“Virat was going to South Africa as captain (of the Test side). Press conferences should be about team matters and not selections. There was no need to bring up this topic (Virat being removed from ODI captaincy) during the press conference. But he did so intentionally. He felt that he had lost his ODI captaincy because of Ganguly. Ganguly hold told reporters that he had asked him not to step down (as ODI captain) but Virat claimed before the media that the president never said this to him. This created a major controversy,” Chetan said.

“Ganguly had told him once during a video conference to think it (stepping down as ODI skipper) over. But Virat did pay heed. There were nine people at the conference, including all the selectors. I am not sure if Virat heard Ganguly correctly. Ganguly later claimed that Virat lied to the media about him. As to why he did so, nobidy knows. It is his personal matter. It sparked off a controversy and matters escalated to the extent where it became an issue of a player against the Board,” Sharma said.

“Rohit Sharma had volunteered (to take over ODI captaincy). It was an ego clash. Virat felt he was removed from captaincy by Ganguly and wanted to teach him a lesson. So he made the statements to the media to defame him. But it backfired on him,” added the national selector.

He said the reason why Kohli was removed from ODI captaincy was that the Board did not want two skippers for two-white ball formats, but rather one for red-ball cricket and another for white-ball cricket.

“Removing someone from captaincy is the job of selectors. We removed him the ODI captaincy as we wanted to have one white-ball captain. This is normal procedure and even he (Kohli) knows it. After Virat announced that he was giving up the T20I captaincy, the selectors made up their minds to remove him from the ODI captaincy as well,” said Sharma.

“The Board and the selectors sits with the captain before removing him from the job. Virat knows this and this is why he felt that Ganguly had a big role in his removal from ODI captaincy. But the thinking of selectors was different. We wanted separate captains for red-ball and white-ball formats,” the chief selector added.

Chetan also shed new light inon the relationship between Kohli and current all-format skipper Rohit Sharma, who had earlier been alleged to share a strained relationship.

“There is no rift. It’s just media speculation. When there are two big leaders in a team, there could be an ego clash every now and then. It is like Amitabh Bachchan ji and Dharmendra ji. It is just ego. The media made up stories that weren’t true,” Sharma said.

The chairman of selectors further revealed that both players have supported each other in their bad times.

“Rohit had supported Virat the most when he was going through a lean run. When Rohit fell into a similar crisis of confidence with the bat, Virat supported him,” said Sharma.

Both players will be seen in action during the second Test against Australia in Delhi, which starts on February 17.

  • Sachin Tendulkar likely to make a comeback in ODIs after Virat Kohli nears his most ODI Century record

    [ad_1]

On Sunday, the ‘run machine’  Virat Kohli smashed another century against Sri Lanka, registering his 46th ODI hundred in the third match of the series. In the process, Kohli went on to break two of Sachin Tendulkar’s ‘all-time records’. Kohli now sits ahead of Tendulkar in the list of most ODI centuries at home, and also holds the record of scoring the highest number of tons against a single team in the 50-over format of international cricket. However, Kohli is still short of 3 ODI centuries to match Sachin’s record of 49 ODI centuries.

Reportedly, Sachin is likely to cancel his retirement and make a comeback in ODIs to ensure his record is intact. After tweeting “Stop the Count”, when a fan asked Sachin if his record of most ODIs will be broken, Sachin replied “Definitely Not”.

Social media users and cricket experts are speculating that Sachin will make a comeback in ODIs to make the record of most ODIs tougher to break.

Sachins fans, also wrote to Virat Kohli requesting him not to score more ODIs centuries as a mark of respect to the cricketing God Sachin Tendulkar. Details awaited.
