Palestinians condemn Israeli killing of 10 in Nablus raid

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: Palestinians have condemned the killing of 10 Palestinians and wounding of 102 others during an Israeli raid in the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the spokesman of the Palestinian presidency, said on Wednesday in a statement that Palestine condemns the Israeli deadly aggression against Nablus, vowing to hold the Israeli government “responsible for this dangerous escalation, which is pushing the region toward tension and an explosive situation”.

“The crime committed by the occupation forces in Nablus reaffirms the importance of our demand that the international community must act immediately to stop the Israeli crimes against our people,” Abu Rudeineh added.

He called on the US administration “to take immediate action and put effective pressure on the Israeli government to stop its crimes and continuous aggression against our people”.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Ishtaye described the Israeli killing of Palestinians in Nablus as “organised terrorism” and urged the UN to stop practicing “double standards”.

“The Israeli aggression is organised terrorism through which Israel seeks to export its internal crisis to the Palestinian arena,” he said.

Ishtaye called on the UN “to stop the policy of double standards that encourages Israel to continue its aggression against the Palestinian people”.

“Whatever is practiced against our people will not deter them from continuing their legitimate struggle to achieve their goals of freedom, ending the occupation, and establishing their independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital,” he added.

In Gaza, Abu Obeida, the masked military spokesman of Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), said in a short statement that “resistance in Gaza is observing the escalating occupation crimes in the West Bank”.

“The patience of the Palestinian resistance in Gaza is running out,” he added.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a statement that 10 Palestinians were killed by Israeli soldiers, including an elderly man and a 14-year-old boy, during an Israeli army military operation in the city of Nablus, Xinhua news agency reported.

At least 102 Palestinians were also injured, including multiple in severe condition and three local Palestinian journalists.

The Israeli military confirmed in a statement that an operation was underway in Nablus, a militant stronghold that is frequently raided by the military, but did not provide further information immediately.

Local sources and eyewitnesses said that an Israeli army force backed by armoured vehicles stormed the outskirts of the old city of Nablus and surrounded a house to arrest several Palestinians wanted by Israeli security.

They added that the wanted Palestinians were armed, and exchanged fire with the soldiers who surrounded the building, adding that several explosions and intensive gunfire were heard in the city.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out in the city’s streets between dozens of Palestinians, who threw stones and empty bottles, and the soldiers, who opened fire at the demonstrators to disperse them.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society in the city said in a statement that the Israeli soldiers prevented its ambulances from entering the area to evacuate casualties that needed medical treatment in the hospital.

Israeli media outlets reported that an Israeli army force carried out on Wednesday morning a regular military activity following reports that Palestinian militants and members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were hiding in a building in the old city.

The reports said that the soldiers moved to the city and traded fire with the militants hiding in the building, adding that no injuries were reported among the Israeli soldiers.

The tension between Israel and the Palestinians has been flaring since early January in the West Bank following a series of Palestinian attacks that killed nine Israelis, according to official Israeli figures.

In return, the Israeli Army carried out dozens of daily incursions into the West Bank cities, villages, and refugee camps to arrest Palestinians involved in carrying out attacks against Israel.

Three arrested on charges of killing cow in Bhopal; NSA to be slapped on them

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Police have arrested three men on charges of killing a cow in Bhopal, an official said on Wednesday, as local authorities demolished “illegal” constructions at the house of one of them and moved to invoke the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the trio.

The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday in Paras Nagar under Gandhi Nagar police station limits of the Madhya Pradesh capital.
Gandhi Nagar Police Station in-charge Arun Sharma informed that following a tip off, a police team reached the spot and spotted three persons with a blood-stained sharp-edged weapon.

Remains of the slaughtered cow were also found at the spot, he said.

The trio tried to flee the site of the crime after seeing the police team. The police, however, caught them and during interrogation they admitted to killing the bovine, Sharma said.

The three men — identified as Imran (30), Irshad (28) and Javed (30) — were booked and arrested under provisions of the state’s anti-cow slaughter law — Madhya Pradesh Govansh Vadh Pratishedh Adhiniyam and — also the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, said the police officer.

He said process of invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against the accused has been initiated.

The NSA allows the government to detain people for up to one year without a trial if they suspect that they could disrupt public order or endanger the security of India.

After the incident, the Bhopal administration demolished “illegal” constructions at the house of Irshad on Wednesday, he said.

Local MLA Rameshwar Sharma termed the cow killing incident as unfortunate and said this was a serious issue as intention of these people could be to trigger communal tension.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator said he has asked the police to find out if more people were involved in the incident.
“I have asked the police and administration to take strict action in the matter,” he said.

  • TN Min lashes out at Governor Ravi over Raj Bhavan remarks on jawan’s killing

TN Min lashes out at Governor Ravi over Raj Bhavan remarks on jawan’s killing

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Minister K Ponmudy on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on R N Ravi over the Raj Bhavan’s remarks on the killing of an army jawan and also over the Governor’s comments about Karl Marx.

Ponmudy, the State Higher Education Minister, took exception to the Raj Bhavan making remarks on the jawan killing with a “political viewpoint.”

Lance Naik M Prabhu of Krishnagiri district was earlier attacked by a DMK councillor and some others and he succumbed to the injuries, and the Raj Bhavan had on Tuesday put out a tweet on its official Twitter handle saying the killing was a matter of “serious concern.”

While the state police was firmly dealing the matter legally (the DMK councillor has been arrested), “one has to consider that putting out Twitter messages on the Raj Bhavan’s official handle with a political viewpoint is nothing but a mischievous act,” Ponmudy said in a statement.

He said Prabhu was killed in a domestic dispute but the BJP was making it an issue for “media publicity.”

The protest by some ex-servicemen here on Tuesday, with the support of the BJP’s state unit was part of this where some of the former army men made objectionable remarks, Ponmudy alleged.

While the Raj Bhavan had highlighted the meeting of the ex-servicemen with the Governor and their plea on Twitter, “when will it reveal the status of the Assembly bill banning online gambling,” he asked.

The bill was reflective of the united voice of the people of the State, he added.

Referring to Ravi’s criticism on Karl Marx, Ponmudy said Marx’s communism proposed equality and argued against discrimination of any kind and that this would certainly be a “bitter pill” for many.

Ravi was “behaving like a child” in a Constitutional post and this amounts to “insulting” the Constitution.

He should stop putting out social media messages like a politician and focus on his work, the Minister added.

He also recalled the recent controversy surrounding the Tamil Nadu vs Tamizhagam name debate triggered by Ravi and referred to the public outcry, even as he charged the Governor with repeatedly making remarks not conforming to the Constitution and its provisions.

TN Army Jawan’s killing a matter of serious concern, says Raj Bhavan

    [ad_1]

Chennai: A group of ex-servicemen on Tuesday called on Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi over the killing of an Army jawan, allegedly by a DMK Councillor and shared their anguish with him, the Raj Bhavan said.

They also flagged the “lukewarm response” of the state law enforcement to the issue, the Governor’s office said in a tweet
“Some Ex-Servicemen met Governor and shared their collective anguish at the gruesome killing of M Prabhu, a serving soldier by an armed gang led by a DMK councillor and lukewarm response of the state law enforcement, ” a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the Raj Bhavan said.

“Indeed, it is a matter of serious concern,” it added.

Prabhu, who was severely thrashed by a DMK functionary and his accomplices, died last week and six people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

Veterans of the Indian armed forces including the highly decorated Brig N L Narayanan participated in the one-day fast and candle light march organised by the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP here on Tuesday condemning the killing of Lance Naik Prabhu and demanding justice for his family.

BJP State chief K Annamalai, who announced a relief of Rs 10 lakh on behalf of the party to Prabhu’s family, said the party would bear the education expenses of the soldier’s two children.

Five awarded capital punishment for killing family suspecting them of practising black magic

    [ad_1]

Chaibasa: A local court on Wednesday awarded capital punishment to five persons in a case of triple murder that took place over a year ago due to suspicions that they were involved in witch craft.

The principal district and session Judge Vishwanath Shukla convicted the five and sentenced them to death for slitting the throats of a person named Salim Dhanga, his wife Belangi and their daughter Rahil at Podongair village on November 8, 2021.

The village is in Bandgaon police station limits in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district.

The court held the five – Markas Dahanga, Iliyas Dahanga, Kemba Dahanga, Daud Dahanga and Iliyas Dahanga alias Banka Banku guilty of killing the three victims and burying their bodies in the banks of Karo river to conceal evidence.

Few days before the incident Markas Dahanga had lost his daughter to an illness. His friends, however, convinced him that the girl had died due to the black magic practiced by his neighbour Salim Dhanga and his family. Markas then along with his accomplices killed the three in their house and buried the bodies, district superintendent of police Ashutosh Shekhar said.

  • Advocate Shahid Azmi killing case: Bombay HC lifts stay on trial

Advocate Shahid Azmi killing case: Bombay HC lifts stay on trial

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has vacated the stay on trial in the 2010 killing of criminal lawyer Shahid Azmi and rejected a plea filed by an accused seeking a change of the trial court on the grounds of “bias”.

Azmi was shot dead in his office in suburban Kurla on February 11, 2010.

At the time of his death, Azmi represented many accused in the 7/11 train blasts cases, Malegaon 2006 bomb blasts cases, the Aurangabad arms haul case, and the Ghatkopar blasts case. Hansal Mehta’s 2013 film Shahid’ starring Rajkummar Rao is based on the life and work of Azmi.

The prosecution case is that Azmi was killed at the behest of gangster Chhota Rajan.

The High Court stayed the trial in September 2022 after an accused Hasmukh Solanki moved an application to transfer the case to another sessions judge.

A single bench of Justice P D Naik on February 7 vacated the stay order and rejected Solanki’s plea seeking transfer of the case from the sessions judge in Mumbai, currently conducting the trial, to another sessions judge. Solanki had alleged bias by the present judge.

Justice Naik in the order said he did not find sufficient material on record to conclude that the trial court was biased against Solanki.

“The material on record is not sufficient to draw the conclusion that the trial court is biased against Solanki and that he would not get a fair trial before the said court. No case is made out for transfer of trial,” HC said.

Azmi had been in Tihar jail for 7 years after being charged under the now-repealed Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) for his alleged involvement to kill politicians.

He was later acquitted by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, he obtained an LLB degree while in prison.

  • Maha orders SIT probe into scribe’s ‘killing’, Congress demands judicial probe

Maha orders SIT probe into scribe’s ‘killing’, Congress demands judicial probe

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Under flak from various quarters for the “killing” of a Ratnagiri journalist Shashikant Warishe, the Maharashtra government will on Saturday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, ordered the police to form the SIT and investigate Warishe’s killing even as the Opposition Congress demanded a judicial probe panel.

Fadnavis has directed the police department to set up the SIT headed by a senior officer and conduct the investigations into the case which has grabbed national attention.

On the other hand, Congress Chief Spokesperson Atul Londhe has sought an inquiry commission headed by a sitting or retired Bombay High Court judge to carry out the case probe, plus the report must be handed over to the court and not the state government.

“It must be noted that Fadnavis had in the past declared that the Barsu refinery complex (originally due to come up at Nanar) will come up no matter what and nothing can stop it…” Londhe pointed out, demanding the judicial probe to ascertain Warishe’s killing and a possible conspiracy behind it.

On Monday, Warishe, 46, was knocked down and dragged on his bike by a SUV allegedly driven by a local realty agent, Pandharinath Amberkar, 42.

While the scribe succumbed to his serious injuries on Tuesday, following a massive hue and cry, Ambedkar was arrested and charged with murder, as the incident reverberated nationally.

Major media organisations, rights and social groups, NGOs, and almost all major political parties like Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI, and others have rallied together to condemn Warishe’ killing, and unravel the plot behind it.

Warishe had run a series of articles opposing the Barsu refinery-cum-petrochemicals complex – billed as the world’s biggest – coming up at a cost of Rs 3.50 lakh-crore, with foreign collaboration in Ratnagiri.

Earlier, following protests by locals, the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi government had scrapped the Nanar location and the next regime has finalised Barsu as its new location, which is also facing huge opposition.

Warishe had been running a campaign against the upcoming refinery and petrochemicals complex coming up in the region, while Amberkar was a supporter of the mega-project.

Journalists and other organisations took out silent protest marches in Mumbai on Friday and in Rajapur on Saturday demanding justice for Warishe’s family and ensuring stringent punishment to the prime accused Amberkar.
