AIADMK opposes Tamil Nadu CM’s remark on ‘honour killing’ accused

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The main opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, AIADMK, on Thursday strongly objected to a point made by Chief Minister M K Stalin while explaining the police action following the murder of a young man, in a case of alleged honour killing.

After Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami raised the issue of the murder that took place in Krishnagiri District and sought action, Stalin, quoting the police report, told the Assembly that Sankar, a person accused in the murder, was a local AIADMK functionary (branch secretary).

AIADMK MLAs objected to the remark and said the man was not a party office-bearer. It led to an uproar.

Speaker Appavu wondered if the Chief Minister did not have the right to mention what was reported by the police. Leader of the House Duraimurugan stated that the CM only referred to the police report and if fresh police inputs emerged later, that point — indicating to the AIADMK reference — may be changed.

Stalin said both the police and district administration had been taking all steps, including commencing initiatives to spread awareness, to prevent such crimes.

On March 21, 2023, a 28-year old man, Jagan, a construction worker, was hacked to death on a highway in Krishnagiri district allegedly by three men including Sankar, who is the father of Jagan’s wife.

Sankar is now lodged in Salem Central Prison.

Jagan had recently married Sankar’s daughter, a second-year college student, against the wishes of her family, police said. Enraged by this, Sankar and two others allegedly committed the murder.

  • Ex-ASI accused of killing minister never applied leave to treat mental disorder: Minister

Ex-ASI accused of killing minister never applied leave to treat mental disorder: Minister

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The lone accused in the Odisha minister Naba Kishore Das assassination case, dismissed police ASI Gopal Das, had never applied for leave for medical treatment of his psychiatric disorder and also had never submitted any representation for transfer on this ground.

Informing the Assembly about this on Monday, junior home minister TK Behera also said that Das remained absent unauthorisedly from duty for around two months in 2014 and four months next year and on both occasions, he received medical treatment for bipolar disorder.

The accused person’s wife had earlier claimed that her husband was suffering from bipolar disorder that causes extreme mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs.

The police officer who was later dismissed was charged with gunning down the health minister in Jharsuguda district on January 29. The government handed over the probe to the state Crime Branch.

The Crime Branch has been attempting to prove that Das was a mental patient so that he can escape harsh punishment, Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra alleged outside the House during the day.

Replying to a written question of Mishra, the minister of state for home said Das remained unauthorisedly absent from duty from February 3, 2014, to April 3, 2014. He submitted his fitness certificate along with medical treatment papers from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, pertaining to his treatment for a psychiatric disorder (Bipolar Affective Disorder).

Das once again remained absent unauthorisedly between March 1, 2015, and June 27, 2015. This time too he submitted his fitness certificate and other documents relating to the treatment for bipolar disorder and urged his higher authorities to consider his period of absence as earned leave (EL). His request was accepted by the higher-ups, Behera said.

This apart, the minister said that the accused had sought leave on 41 occasions between 2014 and 2022 for various reasons including the treatment of his wife and brother. However, he had never applied for leave citing his medical treatment for bipolar disorder, Behera said.

Das’ performance as a policeman in the last 10 years appeared to be satisfactory, the minister said adding that he had been rewarded on at least 12 occasions between 2013 and 2020.

While the Congress lawmaker wanted to know details regarding the leave applications submitted by Das and the awards given to him during his service period, BJP member Subhas Chandra Panigrahi sought to know about his mental illness from the minister.

Meanwhile, the student’s wing of the Odisha Congress staged demonstrations in front of BJD MLA Sushant Singh’s residence demanding that he be brought into the purview of the investigation into the murder case alleging that the two had differences over some issues.

The activists’ attempt to enter the MLA’s quarters by breaking the security cordon led to a scuffle between them and the police.

The Chhatra Congress supporters also tried to gherao the Odisha Assembly but were stopped by the security personnel.

  • Killing by the name of Islam is not acceptable, says PM Hasina

Killing by the name of Islam is not acceptable, says PM Hasina

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: Killing in the name of Islam is not acceptable, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Thursday, stressing that no one gives authority to anyone to punish or kill another person for not following a particular religion.

“Allah gives us lives, and He has the supreme authority to give lives and take lives, killing is against the Quran,” she said, adding that those who believe in Islam genuinely must have tolerance towards other religions.

“In Bangladesh, all religions have the same rights, people will perform their respective religious rituals, Allah will judge everything (on the Doomsday). He does not give that right to any human, all have to remember that,” she said.

Hasina also slammed the businessmen who hike prices of commodities during Ramadan.

“It’s very much regretful, this is happening just for few people, why we will accept that? During Ramadan, profit-mongers increase the prices, making people suffer. This should not happen. Holy Ramadan is coming, we know that during this month, some businesspeople try to hike prices of the essentials,” she said during the inauguration of 50 model mosques along with Islamic cultural centres in parts of the country in the third phase of the programme.

Inaugurating the mosques joining virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban, Hasina said that the holy month of Ramadan is the time for austerity and all have to pay attention to ensure people can do their religious activities properly during the month.

She also said that her government has already distributed special cards for the low-income group people, and is providing rice at lower price (TK 30 per kg) after buying that at higher price.

“Keeping the holy Ramadan in mind, the government will provide Tk 15 per kg of rice to additional one crore people,” she said, adding that for those who are not eligible for work, the government is providing 20 kg of rice each month.

“Like this way we are giving people rice, edible oil, lentil, sugar and other necessary items at fair price through fair price cards,” she said.

The Prime Minister also urged the affluent people to extend their assistance towards the needy people during Ramadan.

She requested all to remain vigil so that none can adulterate food, resort to hoarding, black marketeering and create an artificial crisis of essentials items.

In this connection, she urged Imams to speak about this during their sermons after Friday prayers. “Food adulteration, hoarding, and black marketeering are illegal and unnecessary give sufferings to people. You should speak on these matters more to the people, and you can say during the Khutba to make people aware regarding this,” she said.

Later, she exchanged views with a cross-section of people of Agoiljhara of Barishal, Fulbaria of Mymensingh and Tetulia of Panchagarh. A documentary on the model mosques was screened at the programme.

PM Hasina inaugurated 100 model mosques in the first and second phases, on June 10, 2021 and January 16, 2023, respectively, out of total 564 across the country. The project aims at spreading the true messages of Islam for removing misconceptions about religion.

Mumbai woman held for killing mom, preserving chopped body pieces at home: Police

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A 55-year-old woman was murdered and her body chopped into pieces which were found dumped in the cupboard and water tank in her house in Mumbai, following which police arrested her 23-year-old daughter, an official said on Wednesday.

As per the preliminary investigation, the woman was killed in December 2022, and her body parts are being preserved in her house since then, a senior police officer said without elaborating.

When asked how the body parts were preserved for such a long period and how the accused could have got rid of the foul smell, he said these aspects are being investigated.

While some parts of the highly-decomposed body were found wrapped in a plastic bag kept inside the cupboard of her tenement in Lalbaug area, other parts were found dumped in a water tank, a police official said.

He said the daughter of the woman was found sitting inside the room when police knocked on her door on Tuesday night.

The official said a relative of the woman had gone to the house of the deceased but found the door locked from the inside. The relative grew suspicious due to the foul smell and informed the police.

Police are awaiting a postmortem report and investigating the crime, the official said, adding a case of murder was registered.

“Prima facie, the woman was killed by her daughter in December 2022. If we assume that she severed the body parts at that time, it means she has been staying with the body parts for at least three months. We are trying to find out the motive,” the senior officer added.

Ghaziabad: A court here on Wednesday awarded death sentence to a man for raping and killing a nine-year-old girl last year.

Special POCSO Judge Amit Kumar Prajpati said the culprit should be hanged till death. Kapil Kashyap was held guilty by the court on Monday and the court had reserved its decision for Wednesday, Special Public Prosecutor Sanjiv Bakharwa said.

  • Mercy Killing, Cancer, Poverty and Court: A Play Linked Interesting Extremes

    [ad_1]

    by Maleeha Sofi

SRINAGAR: The theatre play Fataah was an adaptation of Shankar Shesh’s play Fandi that artists from SR Theatre Ganderbal exhibited in the just concluded theatre festival at Tagore Hall. It linked interesting extremes to tell the story of death, poverty and the rule of law.

The play opens with a group of prisoners doing a traditional performance Dambael while the group is consoling a person in the middle of the circle formed by their lyrics Ma Bhar Cxe Gham (avoid stress). The person is the main character, Fataah who has been awarded a death sentence. A lawyer, Rustom Rahman has been appointed by the court, an amicus curie, to fight Fataah’s case as she could not afford one.

The court had chosen Rustom as his lawyer merely because he shares his name with his father. However, Rustom Rahman has never won any case before and is apparently a kind-hearted person who wills to help Fataah.

Fataah is hopeless. In the conversation with his friends and well-wishers, Fataah denies meeting him and accepts him as his lawyer as he thinks nothing can save him. Finally, however, he somehow agrees to it.

The story unfolds gradually. The reason behind his imprisonment is gradually unfolded in their conversation, so it does create a little suspense in the audience. Fataah has been charged with the killing of his father who was battling cancer. He had strangulated his father to death only to relieve him of the pain on repeated requests by his father as they could not afford the injections any longer. Fataah had taken debt from someone.

The lawyer plan to do a rehearsal of the next day’s court trial in which they both imitate the possible witnesses in favour of Fataah. Fataah himself plays the role of judge, the debtor, his wife and other witnesses. It seems as if they win, but it doesn’t happen. All the witnesses speak lies against Fataah and even his wife could not make it to court due to an accident.

Rustom helps to get him another lawyer who luckily does not charge any fee. The conversation after the next trial (The trial isn’t shown in the play) reveals that the lawyer has done well in the court but could not save him. They again rehearse for the next hearing and the play ends with that only without showing whether Fataah will win or lose. The decision is left for the audience to decide.

Fataah is a family man. The play sequences suggest he can not be the person who can kill his father. He had done so, however, to end his father’s pain. The main theme of the play is mercy killing and poverty. There are people who can’t afford the treatment of certain fatal diseases and they tend to die one day or another. Fataah was trapped in the same conundrum until he choked his father to death.

The role of Fataah was played by Sahil Shafi, who did a commendable job of playing different characters. He changed his articulation, enunciation, tone and draping style within seconds to shuffle from one character to another. The set-up was given a touch of Kashmir by choosing the props traditional to Kashmir.

The play is originally written by Shankar Shesh and adopted by Raja Maqbool. It was directed and designed by Sahil Shafi. The character of the lawyer is played by Ashraf Nago, the warden by Aaquib Hameed and Fataah by Sahil Shafi. Dambael was sung and presented by Nazir Ahmad, Bilal Ahmad, Hilal Ahmad, Sahil Meghraj, Shakeel Sheikh, Mohsin Qadir, Shahzad Ahmad, Aqib Nazir Paray, Maroof Majeed and Syed Imtiyaz. The backstage management was done by Mohsin Qadir, Nazir Ahmad, Hilal Ahmad, Aaquib Hameed, Masoom Mumtaz Khan, lights by Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Props by Haider, make-up by Rasid, Stage by Sahil and Ashraf.
