  • Eric Adams attacked for subway safety approach after killing of Jordan Neely

Eric Adams attacked for subway safety approach after killing of Jordan Neely

    [ad_1]

    52870543645 f908732714 o

The killing of 30-year-old Jordan Neely on the subway earlier this week, however, put the mayor in a difficult position as progressive lawmakers led a growing chorus of outrage and launched a renewed attack on Adams’ approach to public safety.

The stakes are high. Subway crime was a driving force behind a groundswell of support for GOP candidates last year, which lifted a Republican gubernatorial candidate to within six points of winning the general election and helped the right flip several Congressional seats to take over the House. New York Republicans continue hammering Democrats on crime ahead of the upcoming congressional races that include several competitive seats. How New Yorkers ultimately view Neely’s killing and the government’s response could also alter the city’s strategy toward mental health and public safety.

On Monday, Neely was acting erratically aboard an F train when he was placed into a chokehold by a 24-year-old passenger and later died. On Wednesday, the city’s medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Several reports have noted Neely, who did impersonations of Michael Jackson in years’ past, struggled with mental health issues.

Adams has said that the incident demonstrates why his policies have been needed all along.

“This is what highlights what I’ve been saying throughout my administration,” Adams said Thursday during an unrelated press conference, echoing comments he made the night before on national television. “People who are dealing with mental health illness should get the help they need and not live on the train. And I’m going to continue to push on that.”

Prominent progressives, however, have laced into the mayor’s response to the incident and re-upped long standing criticisms of Adams’ approach to mental health and safety.

“This is the inevitable outcome of the dangerous rhetoric of stigmatizing mental health issues, stigmatizing poverty and the continued bloated investment in the carceral system at the expense of funding access to housing, food and health,” Tiffany Cabán, a progressive New York City Council member, said in an interview.

So far, the mayor appears outnumbered by a growing cadre of elected officials who have weighed in. While Adams has characterized the incident as tragic, he has also said he will wait until Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg completes his investigation before making any assessment — a view that is not shared even by those politically aligned with the mayor.

“Racism that continues to permeate throughout our society allows for a level of dehumanization that denies Black people from being recognized as victims when subjected to acts of violence,” New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said in a statement, later adding that “the initial response by our legal system to this killing is disturbing and puts on display for the world the double standards that Black people and other people of color continue to face.”

And Maurice Mitchell, head of the national Working Families Party, noted Adams’ policies were in full effect Monday but did not stop Neely from dying.

“Even with hundreds of police in our subways, they failed to prevent this—or even apprehend the killer,” he said in a statement.

  • Mastermind of Moosewala killing Goldy Brar wanted fugitive in Canada

Mastermind of Moosewala killing Goldy Brar wanted fugitive in Canada

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Punjab-origin Satinderjit Singh Brar, nicknamed Goldy Brar, the alleged mastermind in the killing of famed singer Sidhu Moosewala and an affiliate of the Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang, has been listed among Canada’s 25 most wanted fugitives in the country.

Wanted by Royal Canadian Mounted Police for murder, Brar’s name figured in the ‘Bolo (Be On the Lookout) Program’ in an updated list released on Monday.

His life-sized cutout among all 25 fugitives has been displayed at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square.

    MS Education Academy

More than $750,000 in rewards were announced on Monday, with several of the 25 most wanted being connected to rewards ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.

However, there is no reward for Goldy Brar, who figured 15th in the list. He reached Canada on a student visa in 2017.

He had allegedly claimed responsibility for the murder of Moosewala and has been on the run since then. He belongs to Punjab’s Muktsar.

As per Interpol, Goldy Brar, 29, is facing murder, criminal conspiracy and supply of illegal firearms.

Already a Red Corner notice, which allows the arrest of a fugitive, has been issued against him.

Punjab Police have blamed Goldy Brar and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi for the killing of Moosewala in Mansa district on May 29 last year.

Goldy Brar, a member of the Bishnoi gang, has been named in the 1,850-page police charge sheet filed in a Mansa court on August 26 last year. It said Moosewala’s killing was carried out in retaliation for the youth Akali leader Middukhera’s murder.

The others who have been named in the charge-sheet include jailed gangsters Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, Manmohan Mohana, Deepak Tinu, Sandeep Kekda, Ankit Sirsa, Priyavrat Fauji, Sachin Bhiwani, Keshav, Kashish, Manpreet Manu and Jagroop Roopa.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Anti-Gangster Task Force chief Pramod Ban is probing the killing of Moosewala.

Ban has said Bishnoi, the main conspirator, confessed that the execution planning was hatched in August 2021 to avenge the murder of Middukhera.

In December 2022, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann claimed that Goldy Brar had been detained by the police in California and that he would “be brought to India”.

Later a purported video of Goldy Brar surfaced in which he claimed that he was not held and nor was he in the US.

Want someone to shoot us in head?: Azam Khan refers to Atiq Ahmed’s killing

    [ad_1]

Rampur: Fearing being shot dead in a similar manner to gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed, Samajwadi Party senior leader Azam Khan, while campaigning in Rampur for civic polls, asked people whether they want him and his family to be killed in a similar fashion.

“What do you want from me and my children? Do you want someone to come and shoot us in head? That’s all that is left…, save Nizam-e-Hind, save the law, you don’t have to offer anything, you just have to encourage yourself. Sit wherever you get stopped and try to move forward instead of stepping back,” he said.

Azam Khan who was suffering from a prolonged illness took to the stage after a long time to campaign for upcoming civic polls in UP.

    MS Education Academy

“We will cast our vote, it’s our birthright but that too is being snatched from us twice, if it gets snatched thrice then you won’t even to the right to breathe,” he said while referring to disqualification of himself from the House after a court sentenced him to three years in jail in a hate speech case. The case was registered against Khan for leveling serious allegations against administrative officials posted in Rampur, PM, and UP Chief minister Yogi Adityanath in 2019 during an election rally.

Azam Khan campaigned for Samajwadi Party candidate Fatima Zabi, contesting for the presidential post of Rampur municipality.

Azam Khan who is well-known for his sarcastic statements attacked BJP-led government in both UP and center and ended up calling his opponents “political eunuchs”.

“Those who are saying today that the municipality is on contract, they had put the whole country on contract, Red Fort has been sold, airports have been sold, ports have been sold, railways have been sold, what is left? Only the army is left. It’s with Hukumat-e-Hind, it should remain. Our army and the government’s army are two different things. Our army is yours and we have seen this army fighting at every corner and have won,” said Azam Khan.

“‘Vazir-e-Azam’ (Prime Minister) of India has mentioned your Rampur assembly seat in a Hindustan of 150 crore people, this is your status. There is so much fear of you, and this fear is not of any caste, nor of my being a minister, nor of my being an MP or MLA, but it’s the fear of our unity and the trust we share. Whatever happened, whether I remain a member of the Legislative Assembly or not, a person who’s in his young age, his legislature was abolished twice, mine and Abdullah’s (his son) right to vote was were abolished,” he said further.

Azam Khan was elected MLA from the Rampur Sadar constituency. The state Assembly Secretariat, earlier in October, announced Khan’s disqualification from the House after a court sentenced him to three years in jail in a hate speech case. The case was registered against Khan in April 2019 for seriously leveling allegations against administrative officials posted in Rampur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during an election meeting.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Khan was booked for making inflammatory speeches while addressing a public meeting in Khatanagaria village of the Milak Kotwali area. Earlier Allahabad High Court in May 2022 had granted interim bail to Azam Khan in a matter which was related to a wrongful possession of Waqf board property land.

  • SC to hear on Apr 28 plea seeking independent probe into Atiq killing

SC to hear on Apr 28 plea seeking independent probe into Atiq killing

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on April 28 a plea seeking an independent probe into the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj.

Atiq Ahmad (60) and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on April 15 night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup.

The plea, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, has also sought an inquiry into the 183 encounters that have taken place in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.

    MS Education Academy

Tiwari mentioned the matter for urgent listing on Monday before a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha.

He told the bench that his plea was slated to come up for hearing on Monday but it has not been listed.

“Since five judges are not available, some cases in which dates were given have not been listed. We will try to list this on Friday (April 28),” the CJI said, adding, some apex court judges are down with COVID-19 while some others are indisposed due to other reasons.

The Uttar Pradesh Police had recently said that it has gunned down 183 alleged criminals in encounters in the six years of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government and this included Ahmad’s son Asad and his accomplice.

The plea filed in the apex court has sought the setting up of an independent expert committee to probe the killing of Atiq and Ashraf.

“Issue guidelines/directions to safeguard the rule of law by constituting an independent expert committee under the chairmanship of a former Supreme Court justice to inquire into the 183 encounters which had occurred since 2017 as stated by Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) and also to inquire into the police custody murder of Atiq and Ashraf,” it said.

Referring to Atiq’s killing, the plea said “such actions by police are a severe threat to democracy and rule of law and lead to a police state”.

“In a democratic society, the police cannot be allowed to become a mode of delivering final justice or to become a punishing authority. The power of punishment is only vested in the judiciary,” the plea submitted.

It said extra-judicial killings or fake police encounters have no place in the law.

When the police turn “daredevils then the entire rule of law collapses and generates fear in the mind of people against the police which is very dangerous for democracy and this also results in more crimes,” the plea stated.

“Opposition behind killing of Atiq Ahmed…he was going to reveal many secrets”: UP Minister

    [ad_1]

Sambhal: In a startling claim, the Uttar Pradesh Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dharmpal Singh on Saturday alleged that the Opposition is behind the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed as he was going to “reveal many secrets”.

“The truth is that the Opposition is behind the killing of Atiq Ahmed. After his arrest, he was going to reveal many secrets. That’s why the Opposition got him killed,” Dharmpal Singh said.

The mafia-turned-politician and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were killed last week while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj.

    MS Education Academy

Atiq Ahmed was accused in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal in 2005, as well as in the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the BSP leader’s murder, in February this year.

Earlier in the day, the police team reached the hotel for investigation, where Atiq Ahmed’s killers had stayed before the murder.

Earlier on Thursday, the Judicial committee constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government visited Prayagraj while the Special Investigation Team recreated the crime scene where gangsters Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on April 15 while being taken to a hospital for a medical checkup.

Three friends of Lovelesh Tiwari, the main accused in the sensational killing of gangster turned politician and his brother were detained by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda.

The SIT team has also reached Hamirpur and Kasganj to conduct further probe, the police said.

‘Indian Muslims won’t be scared..’: AIMIM MLA on Atiq’s killing

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM MLA from Maharashtra’s Malegaon, Mufti Mohammad Ismail A Khalique on Saturday remarked that only ‘madmen’ assume that the Muslims of India will be scared by killing a couple of individuals.

Talking to the media he said that the present-day situations in Uttar Pradesh (UP) are well known to everyone and there is no need to define them referring to the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed in Prayagraj.

Mufti said that people are taking the law into their hands. “We are not advocating for any criminal, but punish them within the purview of the law,” he said.

He said that taking decisions that sideline the law could be said that it’s a ‘dictatorship’. He said that the UP government is trying to walk the same path as Hitler.

“This is not right for you and the country. If you think that by killing 2-4 people, you will scare all the Muslims of India, this is the dream of a madman. It will never happen.”

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on April 16 said it was necessary to prevent radicalization, adding that he was not afraid to visit Uttar Pradesh.

“I am ready to die… Radicalization needs to be stopped. I will surely visit Uttar Pradesh, I am not scared. Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya (why fear death when you are loved),” he added.

Woman arrested for killing brother’s live-in partner in Delhi’s Teliwara

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her brother’s live-in partner in Delhi’s Teliwara area, police said on Friday.

On April 12, police received information that an unidentified woman’s body was found lying near Krishna Public School in Karawal Nagar, they said.

Later, the body was identified to be that of Rohina Naz alias Mahi (25), a resident of Mirajpur in Uttarakhand, police said.

    MS Education Academy

In the CCTV footage, two bike-borne men were seen moving around suspiciously with a woman sitting in between. A man in a striped T-shirt was also seen carrying the woman’s body on his shoulder and a woman walking right behind him, a senior police officer said.

Later, the two people seen on the CCTV were identified as Vineet Pawar and his sister Parul Chowdhary. Following which the woman was apprehended from Kanti Nagar in Krishna Nagar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey said.

    However, Vineet is still absconding.

Vineet and Naz had eloped four-year-ago. They lived together, but never married, he said.

In 2017, Vineet and his father Vinay Pawar were involved in a murder in Ramala Sugar Mill, Baghpat. They were convicted on October 25, 2019, and were awarded life imprisonment, the DCP said.

Naz lived with Parul in Delhi when Vineet was in jail. After Vineet came out on bail on November 26, 2022, Naz started pressurising him for marriage but Vineet’s family was against it as Naz belonged to a different community, police said.

Due to frequent fights, the brother-sister duo decided to sell off Naz. However, Naz sensed this hand retaliated. Then the duo decided to eliminate her, the DCP said.

On the day of the incident, the couple fought over the issue of their marriage again and Vineet strangulated her and hid her body, Tirkey said.

In the evening, Vineet called another man who came with a motorcycle, police said.

Vineet took the body on his shoulder while Parul carried the victim’s clothes and a cloth that Vineet used to wrap the Naz’s body, police said.

Vineet and his associate drove on the motorcycle with the body kept in between them for over 12 km looking for a place to dump it. They dumped it outside a house in Karawal Nagar and fled, police said.

Thereafter, Vineet left for his village in Baghpat, while Parul began searching for rented accommodation as they planned on sell their house in Teliwara, Farsh Bazaar soon, police said.

Efforts are being made to trace Vineet and his associate who had brought the motorcycle, they added.
