  • ‘Militants who killed 5 soldiers in J&K’s Poonch got logistics from locals’

    [ad_1]

Poonch, apr, 26: Over 30 people have been arrested in the Rajouri-Poonch belt in connection with the militant attack that left 5 Rashtriya Rifles soldiers dead.

An army vehicle had come under fire in the Bhatadhurian village of Poonch district last week. The army vehicle had caught fire after the attack in which 5 soldiers were charred to death and one was shifted to hospital in injured condition.

After the attack, a multi-agency operation was launched while National Investigation Agency also became part of the operation.

A police official on condition of anonymity told news agency Kashmir News Trust that at least 30 locals from the Rajouri-Poonch belt have been arrested and during questioning some of them revealed that militants were staying in the Rajouri-Poonch belt for over 3 months after they infiltrated this area from across the border.

“Before the attack, the militants stayed in the house of a local Gujjar who is in police custody,” he said adding that some locals including a local handler were in touch exchanging voice notes on their cell phones.

Choppers and drones are being continuously pressed into service during this major search operation.

‘During the investigation, it has become clear that locals provided logistics to militants and the attack was planned from Pakistan,’ police sources said adding that militants got instructions from a local handler.

Four out of five soldiers who were killed in the attack were natives of Punjab and one from Odisha. They were identified as Harkrishan Singh, Kulwant Singh, Mandeep Singh, Sewak Singh, and Debashesh Baswal.

Former Jammu Kashmir Police Chief SP Vaid said that the Poonch attack has punctured the narrative of Pakistan that non-state actors are carrying out attacks independently. He said it is clear that somebody from Pakistan establishment are helping these militants. [KNT]

  • Taliban take out ‘mastermind’ of bombing that killed 13 U.S. troops in Afghanistan

Taliban take out ‘mastermind’ of bombing that killed 13 U.S. troops in Afghanistan

    [ad_1]

    us afghanistan airport bombing 72753

After U.S. officials learned of the Taliban operation, the intelligence community worked with the military in recent days to independently confirm the terrorist’s death with “a high level of confidence,” the official said. The Biden administration is holding off on announcing the news until the family members of the victims of the Abbey Gate attack have been notified.

“We are not partnering with the Taliban, but we do think the outcome is a significant one,” the senior official said.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have criticized the chaotic withdrawal after the rapid collapse of the Afghan government in August, 2021. They have also questioned whether the Biden administration has the ability to prevent another terrorist attack on the homeland without a presence on the ground in Afghanistan.

But the senior administration official noted that the Taliban operation validates Biden’s decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan.

It “reflects moreover the president’s judgment that we did not need to remain on the ground, in harm’s way, in Afghanistan in perpetuity in order to effectively address any threat that might emanate from Afghanistan,” the official said.

Kirby said the Biden administration has “made clear to the Taliban that it is their responsibility to ensure that they give no safe haven to terrorists, whether al Qa’ida or ISIS-K.”

The U.S. government has been hunting the Islamic State member responsible for the attack since Aug. 26, 2021, when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside of the Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport where U.S. service members were working to evacuate American citizens and at-risk Afghans. In addition to the service members killed, at least 170 Afghans also died in the attack.

At the time, ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the bombing. After an investigation, the Pentagon concluded that it was the result of a single bomber, not the “complex” attack U.S. officials initially described.

Since the U.S. military withdrew from Afghanistan on Aug. 31, 2021, Pentagon officials have warned that ISIS-K is becoming an increasing threat. In October of that year, Colin Kahl, the undersecretary for policy, told lawmakers that the group could be able to launch attacks on the West and its allies within six months to two years.

Although the U.S. military no longer has a presence on the ground in Afghanistan, the U.S. still maintains an “over-the-horizon” capability to hunt terrorists there, military leaders have said. The Pentagon has conducted a number of operations in the country since August 2021, including one that resulted in the death of 9/11 architect and al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in August of 2022.

In January, the military took out Bilal al-Sudani, a financial facilitator for ISIS and ISIS-K, who was hiding in Somalia, Kirby said. The U.S. and its partners have also killed many ISIS leaders in Syria in recent years, he added.

“We have made good on the president’s pledge to establish an over-the-horizon capacity to monitor potential terrorist threats, not only from in Afghanistan but elsewhere around the world where that threat has metastasized as we have done in Somalia and Syria,” Kirby said.

  • Florida toddler found in alligator’s jaws was killed by father, police say

Florida toddler found in alligator’s jaws was killed by father, police say

    [ad_1]

A Florida toddler who was found dead in the jaws of an alligator last month was drowned by his father before falling into the animal’s grasp, according to police.

The cause of death for two-year-old Taylen Mosley was confirmed by the local coroner’s office, said a statement on Monday from police in St Petersburg.

News of Mosley’s death in early April sent shockwaves through Florida and drew national headlines. The toddler’s body was found in the mouth of an alligator shortly after a family member discovered the child’s mother, 20-year-old Pashun Jeffery, dead in the family’s apartment.

Police allege that Taylen’s father, Thomas Mosley, 21, stabbed Jeffery more than 100 times after a birthday party on 29 March, the Washington Post reported.

Later that night, Thomas Mosley arrived at his mother’s house with cuts to his arms and hands – which were consistent with injuries that commonly occur to attackers wielding knives – and became a suspect in Jeffrey’s killing, according to a police affidavit.

Meanwhile, after authorities found Jeffery’s body, Taylen was reported as missing, and detectives found his body on 31 March, NBC News reported.

Officers noticed the alligator in Lake Maggiore and spotted Taylen’s body in the animal’s mouth, according to the Associated Press. The autopsy whose results were announced on Monday made clear for the first time that the boy had died before the alligator encountered him.

Law enforcement officers shot the alligator to death and “were able to retrieve Taylen’s body intact”, the St Petersburg police chief, Anthony Holloway, said at a press conference in early April, the Associated Press noted.

“We are sorry it has had to end this way,” Holloway had told reporters.

Thomas Mosley has been booked on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of both his son and the boy’s mother. He could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
