    Poonch, Apr 9: An intruder was killed and two others were apprehended as army said to have foiled an infiltration bid on intervening Saturday and Sunday night along Line of Control in Poonch district.

    “On 08 April 2023 at approx 2215 hours, own alert troops deployed on the Line of Control in the Poonch Sector observed a suspicious movement of a group (three individuals) close to the Line of Control and at around midnight the group, crossed the Line of Control and started infiltrating on to own side”, a spokesperson of defence ministry based in Jammu said in a statement to GNS.

    “Own alert troops kept the movement of the infiltrating group under continuous observation and approximately at 0200 hours as the group approached the fence, the alert Indian Army troops deployed on the fence challenged the infiltrators”, the statement reads.

    “The intruders started to run away, were engaged by fire, in which one intruder was shot dead, while the other two managed to run into the jungle taking advantage of the thick foliage and rocky outcrop. The area was immediately cordoned to prevent their escape across the Line of Control.”

    The search operation, as per the statement, was launched at first light wherein the dead body of one intruder was recovered at the encounter site. “As the search progressed in the jungle, one intruder was apprehended alive in wounded condition. In the subsequent search the third intruder was also apprehended alive.”

    “In the search operation so far three bags with fourteen packets of Narcotics weighing approx 17 kgs, Pakistan currency, some documents, and eatables have been recovered.”

    “During preliminary questioning the two intruders who have been apprehended alive, have claimed that they (all three) are residents of Pakistan Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (POJK) and belong to Maidan Mohalla, village Chanjal”, reads the statement.

    “Indian Army troops have by their quick action thus prevented a major infiltration bid of a narco-terror group which had the potential of disturbing the peace in Poonch & Rajouri Districts through its nefarious designs”, reads the statement adding the Indian Army continues to remain alert on the Line of Control and is fully prepared to thwart any such attempts in the future too.     Cairo: At least six people were killed and eight others wounded as a microbus collided with a farming tractor in Egypt’s Giza province adjacent to the capital Cairo, an Egyptian Health Ministry official said.

    “The accident took place early in the morning as the microbus crashed into the tractor near an exit on Al-Kurimat Road in Giza,” Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, spokesman of the Health Ministry, told Xinhua news agency, noting the injured people were taken to a nearby hospital.

    Egyptian local media said that most victims were passengers of the microbus that was severely damaged, the news agency reported.

    SRINAGAR: An infiltrator was killed as the army on Sunday claimed to have foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Poonch sector.

    “On the intervening night of 8/9 April 2023, alert troops of Indian Army on the LoC in the Poonch Sector(JK), detected some suspicious movement of a group of individuals,” a spokesperson of defence ministry based in Jammu said in a statement .

    “The individuals were challenged by  Army  on own side of LoC, close to the fence,” he said, adding, “On being intercepted, in the ensuing operations, one dead body has been seen and the other intruders ran into the forest area.”

    He said a cordon of the area has been established and search operation is in progress. “Update will follow,” he added. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: A tragic incident has occurred in the Khawaja Bagh Baramulla area of North Kashmir where a minor lost his life due to alleged negligence by PDD employees. The incident happened when an iron gate, which was being repaired by another house owner, fell on the child while he was in the courtyard of his house.

    Reports said that PDD employees were present in the area, installing meters, and allegedly used the same gate as support, causing it to give way and fall on the child. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital by family members and locals, the child passed away on the way.

    The AEE Projects PDD Baramulla and other PDD officials denied having any employees present at the time of the incident, adding more mystery to the tragedy.

    Police have launched an investigation to gather more information on the incident, while official sources have stated that they are ascertaining more facts. (KNS)

    Jerusalem: A tourist was killed and five other tourists were injured on Friday night during a shooting and run-over attack in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, Israeli authorities said.

    The incident occurred in the bars and restaurants area along Tel Aviv’s seaside promenade, Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said in a statement, adding the victim was a man in his 30s.

    Three of the injured tourists sustained moderate wounds, while the other two were lightly injured, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the statement by the rescue service.

    According to a police statement, the assailant rammed his car into passers-by before stepping out and starting to shoot. He was shot dead by a police officer at the scene.

    The attacker was identified as an Arab citizen of Israel from Kafr Qasim, east of Tel Aviv, state-owned Kan TV news reported.

    Also on Friday, two British-Israeli sisters, respectively aged 16 and 20, were killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern West Bank, and their mother was critically injured, according to Magen David Adom.

    Following the attack in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the border police and military to call up reserve forces “in the wake of terrorist attacks”, according to a statement issued by his office.

    The attack occurred amid escalating violence between Israel and the Palestinians, triggered by Israeli raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a flashpoint holy site in East Jerusalem, earlier this week.

    Baghdad: Five Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in airstrikes in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, the Iraqi military said.

    Based on intelligence reports, Iraqi warplanes carried out two airstrikes on IS hideouts in the mountainous area of Narin near the Himreen mountain range of northern Diyala, destroying the hideouts and killing five IS militants, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement issued by the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

    Despite repeated military operations against IS remnants, extremist militants are still hiding in deserts and the Himreen mountains in the provinces of Diyala, Salahuddin, and Kirkuk.

    SRINAGAR: A man was killed after he was hit by a vehicle at Chowgam area of Qazigund in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Thursday, officials said.

    An official said that a man was hit by a dumper vehicle (JK03E-4288) at Chowgam and he was immediately rushed to emergency hospital Qazigund where from he was referred to GMC Anantnag for treatment, where doctors declared brought dead.

    “The deceased has been identified as Abdul Hameed Dhobi son of Ghulam Rasool, resident of Chowgam Qazigund,” the official said, adding that police have taken cognizance of the incident and started further investigation.

    Meanwhile, after the accident, the residents of Chowgam village staged a protest and demanded restrictions on heavy vehicles including trucks and dumpers on Chowgam route.

    They said they are facing immense hardships due to free movement of heavy vehicles in Chowgam. “This trend has not only caused inconvenience but also led to several accidents as well,” the protesting residents said. (KNO)

    New Delhi/Leh, Apr 5: A 33-year-old Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officer, who was leading a patrol along the India-China LAC in Ladakh, was killed after falling into a deep gorge, officials said.

    Assistant Commandant Tikam Singh Negi was killed in the line of duty in the Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on April 2.

    “ITBP salutes the braveheart AC/GD Tikam Singh Negi, 24th Battalion ITBP who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Ladakh on April 2, 2023,” the force said through its official Twitter handle.

    The officer was posted at this front since 2021.

    A senior officer posted at the ITBP academy in Mussoorie told PTI that the soldier was an “exceptionally motivated” officer who joined the force in 2013. Negi was a good mountaineer and awarded the ‘sword of honour’ in 2014, that is given to the best cadet during training.

    Negi was leading a long range patrol of his troops when he fell into the gorge while negotiating the treacherous LAC terrain in Ladakh, the officer said.

    The mortal remains of the officer were consigned to flames at his home town in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

    The Northern Command of the Army also paid tributes to the officer, saying it “stands with the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”

    The about 90,000 personnel strong ITBP was raised in the aftermath of the 1962 Chinese aggression and it is tasked to guard the 3,488-km-long LAC on India’s eastern flank. The force is working along with the Army at this front even as the militaries of India and China are engaged in a standoff at Ladakh from 2020.–(PTI)

    Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a youth was stabbed to death during a cricket tournament at Mahisalanda village in Cuttack district, the police said on Monday.

    The deceased youth has been identified as Lucky Rout (22), a resident of Manhisalanda village, where a cricket match was underway between teams from Berhampur and Sankarpur.

    Batting first, Sankarpur scored 114 runs. During the chase, one Berhampur batsman was declared out by the umpire. However, the accused threatened the umpire to declare it as a ‘no ball’.

    Following this, a verbal duel ensued between the members of the Berhampur team and the umpire. Lucky, who was a spectator, had intervened to save the umpire, Cuttack DCP Pinak Mishra told reporters.

    The main accused, who has been identified as Samutiranjan Rout alias Muna, lost his cool and before anyone could understand anything, he attacked Lucky with a knife. Lucky was shifted to the SCB Medical College, where he died, Mishra said.

    Four accused persons have been arrested following the incident.

    A Hindu man was arrested on Sunday after he murdered his 18-year-old Muslim wife in Uttar Pradesh’s Banti Khera village.

    According to police, the incident took place on March 21. Naima wanted to have non-vegetarian food which was objected to by her husband Ajit.

    “The couple had a heated argument and Naima threatened to leave the house. In a fit of rage, Ajit murdered Naima and dumped her body at a nearby well. He tried to eradicate the evidence by sprinkling salt over the body,” police said.
