Landmine explosions kill 55 in Syria since beginning of 2023

    [ad_1]

Damascus: Landmine explosions in Syria have killed 55 people since the beginning of 2023, a war monitor reported.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the death toll includes two women and 18 children killed by the explosions of landmines that were undiscovered in previously rebel-held areas or battle zones.

The death toll also includes five people who were killed on Thursday in the Salamiyeh area in the central province of Hama, it added.

As many as 118 people, including 28 children and four women, were wounded by the landmine explosions during the same period, said the UK-based watchdog group.

The country’s official news agency SANA reported that the five victims were truffle collectors and were looking for the pricey fungus when a landmine left by the Islamic State (IS) terrorists exploded, Xinhua news agency reported.

Many of the landmine victims were farmers or workers collecting truffles in the desert region, who have become a target for IS militants.

In February, IS killed 64 truffle collectors in the desert region of eastern Syria.

Delhi man bought knife to kill wife, sons from Amazon: Police

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has found out that a 38-year-old man, who tried to end his life after killing his wife and two sons, bought the knife used in the crime from e-commerce portal Amazon and suspects that the incident was pre-planned, sources said on Monday.

Rajesh (38) tried to commit suicide after killing his wife and two sons, including a four-month-old infant, over financial issues in west Delhi’s Mohan Garden area on Sunday, police said.

They added that after killing his wife and sons, the accused inflicted a deep injury on his wrist.

According to a senior police officer, the post-mortem examination of the bodies was conducted on Monday and the bodies were subsequently handed over to the family members of the victim woman.

The autopsy suggested that the wounds were caused by a knife, they said.

“Rajesh underwent surgeries on Monday. A preliminary investigation has revealed that he bought a set of three kitchen knives from Amazon last week. Only one knife was used to commit the crime.

“We suspect that the accused was planning this incident for a while. He wanted to kill himself too, but somehow survived. However, further interrogation of the accused will make everything clear. The time of the incident and the sequence of events will be ascertained later,” a source said.

The accused had sent a message about his financial woes in a WhatsApp group of his school friends at 4.50 am on Sunday. His friends alerted his brother, who informed the police around 6 am.

In his WhatsApp message, Rajesh had mentioned that he had suffered a huge financial loss.

  • MP court grants bail to Cong leader held for ‘be ready to kill PM Modi’ remark

MP court grants bail to Cong leader held for ‘be ready to kill PM Modi’ remark

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday granted bail to former minister Raja Pateria over his alleged remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December last year. The senior Congress leader, who has been in jail for nearly the last two and a half months, finally got relief as his previous attempts to secure bail were rejected by both the district and High Court.

Pateria’s alleged remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi — “be ready to kill PM Modi, killing in the sense of defeat in the elections,” had created a political storm in Madhya Pradesh and his comments were condemned by leaders cutting across party lines. The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee had issued an official statement and condemned Pateria’s remarks.

Following this, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra directed the police to register an FIR against the Congress leader.

Subsequently, Pateria was arrested from his residence in Hatta village of Damoh district on December 13 last year. According to the police, Pateria was booked under sections 451, 504, 505 (1)(b), 505 (1)(C), 506, 153-B (1)(C) of the IPC.

Since then he has been in jail, and his multiple bail applications were rejected by the High Court. While rejecting his previous bail plea, Justice Sanjay Dwivedi of the High Court had made a long observation, which read — “It is noticed that it has become a fashion for some public leaders to seek popularity of the followers without caring for the consequence of deliverance. This practice is not only belittling the image of public leaders in the society but also becoming a cause of increase in criminality in politics.”

While addressing a gathering of tribals in his home town on December 11, Pateria had said, “Modi will end elections as he will continue to divide people on the basis of caste and religion. He is a threat to the Indian Constitution. If you want to save the Constitution, be ready to kill him.”

Telangana: Explosives seized in Nizamabad in another plot to kill BRS MLA

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Police in Telangana’s Nizamabad district seized explosive materials from a house in what is suspected to be another conspiracy to kill a legislator of the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

As many as 95 gelatin sticks and 10 detonators were seized from the house of a woman Bonta Suguna, who was earlier arrested for plotting to murder A. Jeevan Reddy, a member of the Telangana Assembly from Armoor constituency in Nizamabad district.

The explosives were seized from Suguna’s house at Kanteshwar Housing Board colony on the outskirts of Nizamabad town.

The Police arrested Suguna (41). P. Prasad Goud (43) has been named as the second accused in the case. He is currently in jail in another case.

On August 8, 2022, Prasad Goud was arrested when he barged into the house of the legislator in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills and allegedly pointed a gun at him.

On seeing the accused, Jeevan Reddy shouted to alert his staff and the accused fled from there.

He was later arrested by the police, who also seized a country-made gun, an air pistol and a button knife from him.

Four others, including Suguna, were later arrested for allegedly helping Prasad Goud to execute his plan to kill the MLA.

According to police, Prasad Goud bore a grudge against the Armoor MLA as he believed that he was responsible for the suspension of his wife as the sarpanch of Kalladi village in Makloor mandal.

Police investigations had revealed that Suguna informed Prasad that a country-made gun was available with Munna Kumar of Bihar for Rs 60,000. On Prasad’s direction, she later transferred the amount to Munna Kumar.

The accused were later released on bail. Following reliable information that the accused were again plotting to murder the MLA, the police searched the house of Suguna and seized the explosives. She told police that Prasad Goud had sent gelatin sticks and detonators to her house on January 9.

According to police, Prasad Goud and Suguna wanted to take revenge on the MLA for sending them to jail.

Prasad Goud is currently in jail for attacking a person with a knife.

  • Kill Tipu Sultan’s followers or chase them out: Karnataka BJP chief

Kill Tipu Sultan’s followers or chase them out: Karnataka BJP chief

    [ad_1]

Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nalin Kumar Kateel asked the public on Wednesday to “kill” all “ardent followers” of Tipu Sultan, the 18th Century ruler of Mysore. Kateel further said that followers of the Sultan should be chased out and sent to forests.

“They (Congress) allowed celebrating Tipu Jayanti which was not required, and spoke disgracefully about Savarkar,” he had said.

Addressing BJP supporters in Yelaburga, Koppal district today, Kateel said, “We are devotees of Lord Rama, Lord Hanuman. We offer prayers and obeisance to Lord Hanuman, and we not Tipu’s descendants. Let’s send Tipu’s descendants back home”.

“I ask the people here whether you offer prayers to Lord Hanuman or Tipu. Then will you send those who are ardent followers of Tipu to forest? Think about it. Do you think Karnataka needs Hanuman devotees or descendants of Tipu? I am issuing a challenge — those who are ardent followers of Tipu should not remain alive on this fertile soil,” he said.

Earlier in February, Kateel stoked controversy by claiming that the coming assembly election in Karnataka was a “Tipu vs Savarkar” one.

“They are allowed to celebrate Tipu Jayanti, which is not required in this state. I challenge Siddaramaiah (senior Congress Karnataka leader), next elections are between Tipu and Savarkar. Let us discuss, come on if this country requires a patriot like Savarkar or Tipu?” he asked.

Last month, Nalin raised quite a few eyebrows while at the launch of ‘Booth Vijay Abhiyan’ in Mangaluru when he demeaned water shortage, sewage problems, and roads filled with potholes as “minor problems”.

Assembly elections are due on 224 seats on Karnataka in April-May, in which the BJP is hoping to win a second term in power.

Earthquakes kill 9057 in Turkey, 2802 in Syria; rescue ops underway

    [ad_1]

As the search for survivors continues in the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes that struck the state of Kahramanmaras in southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday, the death toll has risen to 11,859, while the number of injured reached 54,133, as of Wednesday.

In Turkey alone, the death toll from the earthquake reached 9,057, and the number of injured rose to 52,979, according to the latest statistics announced by the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority.

Meanwhile, the number of earthquake victims across Syria rose to more than 2,802 dead and 5,000 wounded, amid difficulties in delivering aid, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced new residences will be built within 1 year in 10 provinces affected by earthquakes, Anadolu Agency reported.

In the bitter cold, aid workers continue their race against time to try to rescue survivors of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, while bad weather complicates rescue operations.

Although there is little hope of finding more survivors among the thousands trapped under the rubble of the devastating earthquake.

After 48 hours on Wednesday in Turkey, a two-month-old baby was rescued alive from earthquake rubble.

On the other hand, Turkish search and rescue teams succeeded, on Wednesday, in rescuing a one-year-old infant, 53 hours after the earthquake that struck the south of the country.

In another rescue operation, teams managed to rescue another infant in Adi Yaman state, 36 hours after he was trapped under the rubble. The infant was immediately taken to the hospital.

On Tuesday evening, rescue teams from the Istanbul municipality found a Syrian refugee boy named Mohammad Ahmed under the rubble of a completely collapsed building in the town of Hatay, southern Turkey.

The little boy looked exhausted after 45 hours in the dark, covered in dirt, but he did not give up.

In a video documenting the rescue, the little boy appeared to sip water from a bottle cap before being pulled from under the wreckage.

The mayor of Istanbul, Akram Imamoglu, shared the video on Twitter, commenting, “Well done, Mohammad. Antakya.”

As per media reports voices of people from under the rubble are still being heard.

The Turkish disaster management said that about 100,000 search and rescue personnel are working in the affected areas, and the authorities indicated that the coming hours are crucial to rescuing those trapped in the rubble.

While this was considered the worst earthquake to hit Turkey since the one that occurred on August 17, 1999, and caused the death of 17,000 people, including a thousand in Istanbul.

The White Helmets said the death toll is likely to rise, as there are hundreds of families trapped under the rubble.

It is noteworthy that the two earthquakes that struck southern Turkey, on Monday, were of magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, destroying thousands of buildings, and leaving thousands injured, homeless and dead.

World Health Organization fears that the number of victims may reach 20,000, and has estimated the number of people affected by the earthquake at 23 million.
