Fierce clashes continue in Sudan despite 7-day truce

    [ad_1]

Khartoum: Khartoum and several other areas in Sudan witnessed continued violent clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) despite a seven-day truce agreed by the two warring factions.

The violent clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF which erupted on April 15, has so far left more than 550 people dead and 4,926 others wounded, while thousands of citizens have been displaced or forced to seek refuge in safe areas or neighbouring countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia and Chad, reports Xinhua news agency.

On Thursday, the SAF announced that its units clashed with RSF fighters in the town of Bahri, north of capital Khartoum.

“Our forces clashed at dawn today with the rebels who tried to attack the command Bahri military area,” the army said in a statement.

“Our forces destroyed eight combat vehicles of the enemy and seized 11 vehicles, a Katyusha launcher and communication devices,” the statement added.

The SAF further called on the citizens to keep away from the sites of clashes and strange metal objects.

The RSF, for its part, accused the army of violating the declared humanitarian truce and attacking their posts at on Thursday.

“Our forces and residential neighbourhoods came under indiscriminate artillery and aircraft bombardment in a flagrant violation of international norms as well as international and humanitarian law,” the paramilitary said in a statement.

Meanwhile, violent clashes also took place on Thursday in El-Obeid, the capital city of North Kordofan state.

“El-Obeid city and the command of the 5th Infantry Division came under a treacherous attack by the rebels today,” the SAF said.

“The enemy was crushed and suffered heavy losses and its remnants are being chased out of the city.”

The army said that the operational situation in all parts of Sudan was stable and calm, except for parts of the capital and El-Obeid city.

The incidents of violence came a few hours after the two sides agreed to a seven-day truce extension proposed by the regional African bloc Inter-Governmental Authority on Development.

Earlier in the day, the Foreign Ministry condemned what it termed “the violations of the rebel RSF against embassies and diplomatic missions without the slightest regard to the declared truce or respect for international law”.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the attacks by the rebel forces on the headquarters of the Indian Embassy,” it said in a statement.

The Ministry said that it had also received complaints about attacks on the building of the Saudi cultural attache, residences of the Swiss diplomats, and the consular section of the Turkish Embassy.

Given that the clashes have pushed the country to the edge of a humanitarian crisis, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths, who arrived in the eastern city of Port Sudan on Wednesday, urged the warring parties to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the needy.

To this end, RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo pledged to open and protect humanitarian corridors to facilitate the movement of citizens in areas controlled by his forces.

  • ‘The Kerala Story’: 2 Kochi theatres cancel shows; only one to screen film

‘The Kerala Story’: 2 Kochi theatres cancel shows; only one to screen film

    [ad_1]

Kochi: Two theatres in Kochi city have cancelled the screening of the controversial film ‘The Kerala Story’ which will be released in cinema halls today.

Although PVR Cinemas in Lulu Mall and Oberon Mall, and Cinepolis in Centre Square Mall have cancelled the screening, no reasons were stated for the decision.

There is only one theatre ‘Shenoys’ remaining in Kochi city which is set to screen the movie from 10.00 am.

    MS Education Academy

Earlier, theatres reached an agreement with distributors to screen the film on 50 screens in Kerala, but many backed out just before the release.

Later, the film agreed to screen on only 17 screens. However, as of now, it is not clear how many theatres will be screening the film.

In the meantime, there are only three theatres which are going to screen this movie in Ernakulam district. Shenoys in Kochi city, Carnival Cinemas in Kariyad and Dharshana Cinema Complex in Piravom will be screening ‘The Kerala Story’.

The show’s cancellation comes amid protests against the movie for allegedly propagating a false narrative of Islamic conversion.
Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the movie releasing today.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, recently said in a statement that the movie was deliberately made with the aim of communal polarisation and to spread hate propaganda against Kerala.

The statement reads, “The trailer of the Hindi film, ‘The Kerala Story’, which appears to have been deliberately made with the aim of communal polarisation and to spread hate propaganda against Kerala was released last day. It is indicated from the trailer that this film is trying to spread the propaganda of Sangh Parivar, which has established itself as the centre of religious extremism in the land of secularism, Kerala.”

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday tweeted, “It may be your kerala-story”>Kerala story. It is not our kerala-story”>Kerala story.”

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles.

The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

Leader of Opposition in Kerala Legislative Assembly VD Satheesan recently said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ should not be granted permission for screening.

“The film ‘The Kerala Story’ which falsely claims that 32,000 women in Kerala converted and became members of the Islamic State, should not be granted permission for screening. The trailer clearly shows what the film intends to say”, Satheesan said in a Facebook post.

After controversy sparked over the same, the makers of the film took a U-Turn and changed the number from 32000 women to 3 women in the description of their trailer.

He also alleged that the film is part of an attempt to implement Sangh Parivar’s agenda and create a social divide by casting a shadow of doubt over the minority groups.

“This is not an issue of freedom of expression but part of an attempt to implement the Sangh Parivar agenda to create a divide in the society by casting a shadow of doubt over the minority groups”, he said.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Haj Committee has announced that the departure of batches of Haj pilgrims from Telangana for Haj 2023 will begin on June 7. The Hyderabad embarkation point is expected to see around 5,200 pilgrims leave for the Hajj. The announcement was made following a meeting held by the Telangana Haj Committee at Haj House recently.

During the meeting, arrangements for the Hajj camp and the departure and return of the pilgrims were finalized. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Chairman Haj Committee Mr. Mohammed Saleem, Chairman, Telangana Waqf Board Mr. Masihullah Khan, and Executive Officer Mr. B. Shafiullah informed that the convoys will leave for Jeddah from Hyderabad between June 7 and 22, according to the schedule prepared by the Haj Committee of India. The police, fire service, water works, medical and health, electricity, and GHMC will all be providing their services at the camp.

    MS Education Academy

Under the new rules, pilgrims will have to obtain a fitness certificate after an inspection in government hospitals, and the schedule of vaccination will be announced soon.
