London: King Charles III, who was officially crowned on Saturday alongside Queen Camilla, wore St Edward’s Crown for the historic coronation ceremony.

The 74-year-old royal was officially crowned the UK’s monarch at Westminster Abbey. His Majesty’s coronation will be a historic occasion, but he has been monarch of the UK since September 2022.

King Charles III was crowned with St Edward’s Crown, the Metro newspaper reported.

    MS Education Academy

It is tradition for the monarch to wear the solid gold St Edward’s Crown often dubbed the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels at the moment of coronation, the report added. It was worn by the King’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her own coronation in June 1953.

And by the King’s late grandfather, King George VI, at his coronation in May 1937.

The crown dates back hundreds more years to 1661 when it was made for King Charles II.

In December 2022, St Edward’s Crown was removed from its place among the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London to undergo modification work’ ahead of the coronation.

It is topped with an orb and a cross, symbolising the Christian world, and made up of a solid gold frame set with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnet, topazes and tourmalines.

It has a velvet cap with an ermine band, the Sky News reported. And in February 2023, Buckingham Palace confirmed that work was complete and the crown was back at the Tower of London.

During the coronation, the King will also wear the Imperial State Crown. One of the Crown Jewels’ best-known pieces, it was poignantly featured among the regalia placed on the late Queen’s coffin during lying-in-state and funeral proceedings.

It is also present during every State Opening of Parliament.

This crown dates back to 1937 and was made by jewellers Garrard & Company for the coronation of George VI. It was also worn by Elizabeth II towards the end of her coronation, as it is lighter to wear than St Edward’s Crown, the report added.

Queen Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown, but reset with the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds.

  • Shoot and scoot policy by Go Airlines and Pratt & Whitney

Shoot and scoot policy by Go Airlines and Pratt & Whitney

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Shoot and scoot seems to be the communication policy being adopted by the two warring groups in the aviation sector – Indias Go Airlines (India) Ltd and the US aircraft engine maker Pratt & Whitney.

Incidentally, Pratt & Whitney India is headed by Ashmita Sethi, who was earlier the Vice President Communications and Public Affairs, South Asia, for Rolls Royce and Director, Communications and Corporate Affairs at Boeing as per her LinkedIn page.

In times of crisis, the principle to be followed is communicate, communicate and communicate is what communication gurus advocate.

    MS Education Academy

But the two companies do not adhere to that and remain silent to questions from IANS and the media but resort to shoot and scoot strategy.

It was the Wadia group’s Go Airlines which fired the first shot blaming Pratt & Whitney for its decision to file a voluntary petition for insolvency with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Delhi under Section 10 of the Insolvency Bankruptcy Code (IBC).

The airline said that it has approached the NCLT “due to the ever-increasing number of failing engines supplied by Pratt & Whitney’s International Aero Engines, which has resulted in Go First (airline brand) having to ground 25 aircraft (equivalent to approximately 50 per cent of its Airbus A320neo aircraft fleet) as of May 1, 2023.”

“The percentage of grounded aircraft due to Pratt & Whitney’s faulty engines has grown from 7 per cent in December 2019 to 31 per cent in December 2020 to 50 per cent in December 2022. This is despite Pratt & Whitney making several ongoing assurances over the years, which it has repeatedly failed to meet,” Go Airlines said.

Go Airlines had said it has been forced to apply to the NCLT after Pratt & Whitney, the exclusive engine supplier for its Airbus A320neo aircraft fleet, refused to comply with an award issued by an emergency arbitrator appointed in accordance with the 2016 Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

The airline’s decision to apply for insolvency blaming the engine supplier has taken its lenders, creditors, staff and others entirely by surprise.

Perhaps, Go Airlines is the first airline to blame the engine maker for its financial woes.

With Go Airlines tight lipped some are even wondering whether blaming the engine supplier for its woes is a strategy to get a huge loan waiver.

Be that as it may, on Saturday, Go Airlines issued a summary of technical issues it faced with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.

The airlines said “Airbus certified two engines to power the new A320neo: Pratt’s PurePower PW1127G-JM engine, and a CFM engine. Pratt & Whitney touted itself as the next generation engine, with the expectation that each Engine would have a lifespan of approximately 15,300 hours on wing before its first full interval shop visit (“FISV”). The expected lifespan of the Engines was an important consideration for GoFirst to go ahead with Pratt & Whitney engines.”

According to Go Airlines, these Engines were understood to have new technology that would be more fuel efficient, produce less noise and be more environmentally friendly and would have lower expected maintenance costs.

“Moreover, Pratt offered better commercial terms compared to its competitor which included financing via their affiliate (UTF) for the Pre Delivery Payments,” the airline added.

Go Airlines said from day one the Pratt & Whitney engines were problematic and has been an industry wide issue.

“The teething problems continue even after so many years clearly indicates an inherent design problem. These GTF engines were developed on an unproven, new’ technology platform prematurely tested and forced into the market to capture airline attention with performance stats that were never achieved,” Go Airline charged.

“Pratt & Whitney engine issues are nowhere related to supply chain challenges as Supply chain issues occur when a product is reliable, robust, functional, and in high demand,” the airline added.

“The engine problems included issues with the Engines’ software, start-up times, starter, main gear box, and fan blades, but the key issues were with the combustor (i.e., there was erosion in the combustion chambers, known as combustor distress’),” Go Airlines said.

“Between 2016 and February 2023, GoFirst carried out 510 GTF Engine removals: 289 Engine Changes as a result of at least 28 different defects, and 221 Engine Swaps,” the airline said in its note.

According to Go Airlines, 15% of total Pratt & Whitney GTF powered aircrafts are grounded because of faulty engines globally (178 aircrafts are grounded out of 1,219 aircrafts as of March 2023).

The most affected region is India with 65 grounded aircrafts out of 178 aircrafts. Out of 60 global customers, only 4 customers have grounded aircrafts in excess of 25 per cent and 2 of them are Indian customers.

“Pratt & Whitney’s recent proposal whereby they proposed to give 5% of induction slots to Go First despite AOG’s at 54 per cent is hard to believe and is a deliberate attempt to kill Go First,” the airline charged.

On their part, a spokesperson of Pratt & Whitney told IANS: “Go First has a lengthy history of missing its financial obligations to Pratt,” a spokesperson for the aircraft engine supplier Pratt & Whitney responded to the IANS list of questions.

However, the official declined to elaborate further on its allegation against Go Airline.

“Pratt & Whitney is committed to the success of our airline customers, and we continue to prioritize delivery schedules for all customers. P&W (Pratt & Whitney) is complying with the March 2023 arbitration ruling related to Go First. As this is now a matter of litigation, we will not comment further,” Pratt & Whitney spokesperson said.

And nothing was heard after that from the global aircraft engine maker.

  • Take refinery to Gujarat, bring projects from neighbouring state to Maha: Uddhav

Take refinery to Gujarat, bring projects from neighbouring state to Maha: Uddhav

    [ad_1]

Ratnagiri: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said the proposed oil refinery in Barsu in coastal Ratnagiri district should be moved to Gujarat and good investment projects from the neighbouring state be brought to Maharashtra.

Interacting with villagers at Barsu, Thackeray dared the government to face the protesters and support the project, even as BJP leaders took out a rally in the area backing it.

As the chief minister of Maharashtra, Thackeray said, he had proposed Barsu as a site for the refinery project when he was the chief minister. He asserted that he did not specify come what may, even if it means “breaking heads of protesters” or people turning pauper, the refinery project must come up.

    MS Education Academy

“The bulk drugs park, Vedanta-Foxconn and Tata-Airbus are gone (to Gujarat). My opinion is to take this (refinery) project to Gujarat and bring our good projects to Maharashtra. Whatever is non-controversial is for Gujarat and what is controversial is imposed on Konkan and Maharashtra,” Thackeray said.

On the other hand, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane, his brother and former MP Nilesh Rane, took out a morcha in support of the refinery project.

Nilesh Rane said Thackeray backed the project when he was the chief minister, but he is opposing it as he is in the opposition now.

Thackeray said that he will not let any development project come up that hurts the interests of people.
The ex-CM said he had the honesty to face the protesters. He said the government should hold a dialogue with locals before coming up with any project.

A section of locals is opposing the Barsu refinery on the grounds that it will adversely affect the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region and also hit their livelihood.

Thackeray said when he was the chief minister, similar protests had taken place while building the Samruddhi highway.

“But we struck a dialogue with protesters. We worked out a way without hampering development,” he said.

Earlier, Thackeray had planned to hold a rally in the Barsu-Solgaon area earlier but was denied permission.

Protests broke out at Barsu after the work for soil testing began at the site last month. It also pitted the state’s Eknath Shinde-BJP government against the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress.

MVA leaders have demanded sensitive handling of the situation arising out of the agitation.

Following the detention of several protesters, including women, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former state environment minister Aaditya Thackeray had asked the government to “stop atrocities on people and also the soil survey”.
Uday Samant, Maharashtra industries minister, had alleged that “misunderstandings” were being deliberately created about the project for political mileage and slammed the “politics of double standards”.
Samant claimed that out of 5,000 acres of land needed for the refinery, people owning 2,900 acres have already given consent letters.
Amid the protests, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said last month that the proposed refinery project at Barsu won’t be implemented without the local people’s consent as he appealed for calm in the area.
The project was initially planned at Nanar in Ratnagiri district. Following protests by locals earlier, the erstwhile Uddhav Thackeray government had suggested to the Centre an alternative site at Barsu.

  • Sexual harassment case: WFI chief Brij Bhushan yet to be questioned

Sexual harassment case: WFI chief Brij Bhushan yet to be questioned

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police are yet to interrogate Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), in connection with the two FIRs registered against him on April 21, pertaining to serious allegations, including violations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

As per sources, the police are yet to summon Singh, despite the FIRs filed 14 days ago.

“We have recorded the statements of seven wrestlers and Singh will be served summons soon,” said a source.

    MS Education Academy

According to police, one of the cases against him was registered under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), and 354D (stalking), while the other was registered under section 10 of the POCSO Act.

    What law says?

While demands for the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), persist due to three non-bailable and “serious” offences, legal provisions and Supreme Court rulings provide clarity on the matter.

As per section 41A of IPC and various judgments of the apex court, the arrest of an accused is not obligatory if the maximum punishment prescribed for the offence is less than seven years of imprisonment.

Supreme Court lawyer Vineet Jindal said that the decision to make an arrest lies solely with the police authorities. However, in cases involving serious offences, it is generally considered the norm to make an arrest. “Notably, offences under the POCSO Act are classified as non-bailable. Therefore, if there is a legitimate investigative requirement, the likelihood of an arrest occurring as a consequential action is high,” said Jindal.

Another Supreme Court lawyer, Rudra Vikram Singh said that since there is delay in arresting Singh, it might be due to primary investigation in the matter.

“Also since the offences under POCSO Act and other acts allegedly committed entail a sentence up to seven years hence in these circumstances, the investigating officer might follow the compliance of provisions of Section 41 and Section 41-A of the CrPC as provided by Supreme Court in Amresh Kumar vs State of Bihar. If Singh does not cooperate with the ‘Investigating Officer’ (IO) in the probe, police can arrest him,” Singh added.

    What wrestlers demand?

Earlier, after the Supreme Court closed the proceedings on a plea by three women wrestlers, who have levelled sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan, Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik said, “it’s okay”, and that they will decide the future course of action after consulting with seniors.

“It is okay, we respect the Supreme Court. Their job is only to register the FIR. No court can ask anyone to arrest. We are sitting firm on our protest and it will go on till we get justice,” the 30-year-old wrestler told IANS.

“First the statements of our girls should be recorded before the magistrate under 164 CrPC. That is not done yet. We are waiting for it, after that we will see what needs to be done in this regard.”
