Doctor couple arrested for sexually abusing ‘adopted’ children in Guwahati

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: A doctor couple has been arrested in Guwahati for allegedly assaulting two children, including sexual abuse, whom they were claiming to be adopted kids, the police said on Sunday.

Three children, one boy and a girl aged around three years and another boy of about 11 years, were rescued from the residence of the doctor couple.

“After conducting medical examination, it was found that the girl suffered brutal physical abuse as well as sexual assault. The younger boy was also assaulted.

    MS Education Academy

The 11-year-old boy looks healthy and a medical examination is going on,” Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah told a press conference.

The police have slapped various sections of the IPC along with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) against the doctor couple and their maid, who has also been arrested, Barah said.

The male doctor and his family’s maid were arrested in Guwahati on Saturday, while his psychiatrist wife, who is frequently seen in local TV channels’ talk shows on mental health, was caught on Sunday while trying to flee from the city, he added. A local court remanded them to police custody for five days.

“They are being interrogated. We found that the children were not their own, but they are claiming them to be adopted,” the police commissioner said.

However, it is yet to be established whether the three children were adopted by the well-known doctor couple legally. The arrests of the man and the maid were made on Saturday after photographs of the girl tied to a pole on the terrace of their residence went viral on the previous day.

The doctor’s wife made a video and uploaded it on social media, claiming that a conspiracy was hatched to “defame and destroy” the family. Later, the Assam Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) took cognisance of the matter and wrote to the civil and police administration to initiate enquiry and take action against the accused.

ASCPCR Chairperson Sunita Changkakoti said the Commission took note of the matter and wrote to the Guwahati Police Commissioner and the Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner on Friday evening, seeking details about the incident. She claimed that the previous wife of the accused doctor had brought similar charges against him of abusing their child a few years back.

Tillu Tajpuriya murder: Seven personnel of Tamil Nadu Special Police suspended

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Seven personnel of the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TNSP), who were on duty at a Tihar prison cell when gangster Tillu Tajpuriya was stabbed to death, have been suspended and will be sent back to Tamil Nadu for allegedly standing as mute spectators at the time of the incident, jail officials said on Sunday.

The development comes days after Director General of Delhi Prisons Sanjay Beniwal wrote to the Tamil Nadu Police asking them to take action against its personnel.

A meeting was also conducted with officials of the TNSP regarding the alleged negligence on part of their personnel during which they had assured to take departmental action against their personnel, a jail official had said.

    MS Education Academy

“The Tamil Nadu Police has now suspended seven of its personnel and called them back,” a jail official said.

The TNSP personnel were deployed at cell number eight where the incident took place, the officials said.

The TNSP provides security on the Tihar jail premises.
A CCTV video from Tihar Jail which emerged on social media purportedly showed Tajpuriya being attacked in front of security personnel as well when they were carrying him away after he was stabbed.

Tajpuriya was assaulted with improvised weapons allegedly by four members of the Gogi gang inside the high-security prison on Tuesday morning. But he was still alive and was being carried away by the prison security personnel when the accused attacked him for a second time, according to the footage.

In the footage, it appeared that the security personnel remained mute spectators while the assailants kept attacking the gangster.

  • Gehlot’s statement a conspiracy: Vasundhara Raje counters Rajasthan CM’s claim

Gehlot’s statement a conspiracy: Vasundhara Raje counters Rajasthan CM’s claim

    [ad_1]

Dhaulpur: Former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vasundhara Raje countered Ashok Gehlot’s claims, saying Rajasthan Chief Minister is lying out of fear of losing the 2023 Assembly elections and his false allegations show he is rattled by the rebellion in state Congress unit.

Targeting rivals within Congress, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot credited former chief minister Vasundhara Raje and two other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for having helped him save his government during the 2020 crisis when some Congress MLAs revolted and tried to topple his government.

Vasundhara Raje said, “Gehlot’s statement against me is a conspiracy. Nobody can insult me as much as Gehlot has done. He is lying out of fear of losing the 2023 Assembly elections and has made such false allegations as he is rattled by the rebellion in his own party”.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a programme in Dholpur on Sunday, Gehlot divulged that the 2020 crisis was conspired by Union Ministers of the BJP government and claimed that Vasundhara Raje, former Assembly Speaker Kailash Meghwal and MLA Shobharani Kushwaha were not in favour of toppling the elected Congress government.

Gehlot said, “Former Chief Ministers of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Shobha Rani and Kailash Meghwal knew their party people were toppling the government. Vasundhara Raje Scindia and Kailash Meghwal had said that it has never been our tradition to topple the elected government on the basis of money. They did not support those who toppled the government due to which our government survived.”

Targeting rivals within the party, CM Gehlot said he had requested the MLAs, who revolted to return the money they had taken from the BJP so that they could perform without any pressure.

“Amit Shah, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Gajendra Shekhawat conspired together and distributed the money inside the Rajasthan government. I advised our MLAs (who revolted) that even if some of the money taken has been spent by them, they should inform us. I will give you money and tell AICC, but don’t take BJP’s money.

If you will keep their money, they will scare you later, threaten you… They took away 25 MLAs. Amit Shah plays a very dangerous game, give his money back,” Gehlot said while exposing the BJP’s gameplan of toppling his government.
Ashok Gehlot in July 2020 had accused the BJP of trying to overthrow his government by offering Congress lawmakers bribes but the BJP denied any involvement.

The Gehlot and Pilot feud has been simmering since before 2020 and Pilot was sacked as deputy CM and removed as state unit chief.

Pilot again opened a fresh front against Gehlot, his old political rival within the party, alleging that the state government failed to investigate cases of alleged corruption during the Bharatiya Janata Party rule in Rajasthan and announced his plan to hold a day-long fast on April 11 to demand action.

The Congress party called a meeting to resolve the situation regarding Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress leader Sachin Pilot, party sources confirmed.

The fresh crisis has emerged months before the assembly polls in the state due late this year.

Pilot is seen as a chief ministerial aspirant but Gehlot, who did not contest the Congress presidential election, is apparently keen not to hand over the reins of the state to him.

The differences between the two had come out sharply in 2020 with Pilot leading a “rebellion” against Gehlot.
The two leaders have taken potshots at each other on several occasions in the past.

Sewing livelihoods: Women of rural Latur keep dying art of quilting alive

    [ad_1]

Latur: The humble traditional quilt “godhadi” has become an assured source of livelihood for women in some remote villages of Maharashtra’s Latur district.

A project, which was started in 2017 on an investment of Rs 50,000 by the self-help group Ruma, short for rural Maharashtra, is now providing women a monthly income of Rs 8,000, an official said.

What began as a small enterprise has since grown to employ 35 women in the age group of 18 to 60 years (some of them speech and hearing impaired) from Ansarwada and surrounding hamlets in Nilanga tehsil.

    MS Education Academy

Godhadi, the main product of the self-help group, is hand sewn by women by layering colourful cloth scraps to make beautiful patterns.

The project came into being on March 8, 2017 with an aim to provide women of Ansarwada steady wages and keep the traditional handicrafts alive, Ruma project president Rukmini Pastalge said.

The project was started under the guidance of one Madhuvanti Mohan, who was working with a few NGOs in the district, she said.

The women who are part of the collective have been keeping the dying art of quilting alive with their new and innovative designs, an official from UMED Rural Livelihood Mission said.

Apart from colourful godhadis, the women also make cloth toys and bags, he said.

UMED Rural Livelihood Mission has been extending support to the self-help group by providing a platform to showcase the handcrafted creations at exhibitions, he said.

At least 15 small and major exhibitions were organised in the last four years and Ruma’s ‘godhadi’ even went on to win an award in one of them, the official said.

“We are making efforts to sell our godadhis abroad. We want to make our products on par with handicrafts from West Bengal, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir,” Pastalge said.

The quilts have received a good response from online sales as well, but most of the products are sold by word of mouth or during exhibitions, she said.

The collective procures raw materials (cloth scraps) from different parts of the country or receives discarded scraps in the form of donations from factories, she said.

  • Chinese invasion of Taiwan could cost world economy USD 1 trillion: US intelligence

Chinese invasion of Taiwan could cost world economy USD 1 trillion: US intelligence

    [ad_1]

Washington: US intelligence officials predicted that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan or an attack as early as 2025 on the island nation could cost the world economy USD 1 trillion, reported Taipei Times.

US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines presented what she called a “general estimate” during testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

“A Chinese invasion of Taiwan could halt production by the world’s largest advanced chipmaker, wiping out up to USD 1 trillion per year from the global economy in the first few years,” said the top US intelligence official.

    MS Education Academy

The advanced semiconductors produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) are used in 90 per cent of “almost every category of electronic device around the world,” said Haines.

Haines said that Chinese President Xi Jinping is leaning toward unifying with Taiwan in a “peaceful” manner, but is also preparing possible military action to achieve that goal, reported Taipei Times.

“I think we continue to assess that he [Xi] would prefer to achieve unification of Taiwan through peaceful means,” she said.

If a Chinese invasion stopped TSMC from producing those chips, “it will have an enormous global financial impact that I think runs somewhere between USD 600 billion to USD 1 trillion on an annual basis for the first few years,” she said.

“It will also have an impact on [US] GDP if there was such an invasion of Taiwan and that [TSMC’s production] was blocked,” Haines said.

However, Haines said it would also have a large impact on China’s economy, reported Taipei Times.

To deal with that risk, TSMC is investing USD 40 million to build two sophisticated wafer fabs in Arizona at Washington’s urging.

A fab using the 4-nanometer process is scheduled to begin mass production next year, and the other, using the more advanced 3-nanometer process, is slated to mass-produce chips starting in 2026, reported Taipei Times.

Haines’ comments came after US Senator Rick Scott raised concerns about the possibility of China invading Taiwan, citing Xi’s remarks in the past year suggesting that he was preparing the Chinese population for a war against Taiwan.

Xi has directed the Chinese military to “provide him with a military option, essentially, to be able to take it without concern of [US] intervention,” which is expected to “have a meaningful impact on his capacity to do so,” Haines said.

Also at the hearing, US Defense Intelligence Agency Director Scott Berrier appeared to have greater concern than Haines about a possible invasion of Taiwan, saying that Xi’s rhetoric has been “picking up” after he assumed his third term as president, reported Taipei Times.

Berrier provided a list of possible invasion dates ranging from 2025 to 2049. “I think the bottom line is he’s told his military to be ready,” Berrier said.

Haines said the relationship between the US and China has become “more challenging,” citing a speech made by Xi in March in which he blamed Washington for suppressing Beijing, reflecting his distrust of the US and his belief that Washington is seeking to contain his country, reported Taipei Times.

Surprised over PM Modi giving ‘religious’ slogans during Karnataka poll campaigning: Pawar

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar has said he is surprised that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given “religious” slogans during election campaigning in Karnataka, which votes on May 10.

When one takes up a religion or religious issue in an election, it creates a different type of environment and it is not a good thing, Pawar told a regional news channel.

Speaking to reporters in Pandharpur temple town earlier on Sunday, the NCP chief claimed the Congress will come to power in Karnataka.

    MS Education Academy

“We take oath for democratic values and secularism at the time of contesting an election,” Pawar told TV9 Marathi.

“I am surprised that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given religious slogans during campaigning for the Karnataka Assembly elections. We have accepted the concept of secularism. When you take up a religion or religious issue in an election, it creates a different type of environment and it is not a good thing,” he said.

Asked about the ongoing agitation at Barsu village in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district where a section of locals are opposing a mega oil refinery project, the NCP leader said he was keen on visiting the place, but it will be decided when and how he finds the time.

“I had a meeting with representatives of Barsu villagers. I will hold another meeting with experts. I feel the issue should be taken forward by taking the villagers into confidence,” he said.

  • BJP leaders Raje, Kailash refused to support conspiracy to topple my govt in 2020: Gehlot

BJP leaders Raje, Kailash refused to support conspiracy to topple my govt in 2020: Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Dholpur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday claimed he survived the 2020-revolt by some Congress MLAs because BJP leaders Vasundhara Raje and Kailash Meghwal refused to support a conspiracy to topple an elected government through money power.

Raje, a former chief minister of Rajasthan, however, said that “Gehlot’s ‘praises’ is a big conspiracy” against her and the Congress leader was speaking lies due to rebellion in his party.

Gehlot also took potshots at the rebel Congress MLAs, saying they should return the money they had taken from the BJP so that they can carry out their duty without any pressure.

    MS Education Academy

His then deputy Sachin Pilot and 18 other Congress MLAs had revolted against his leadership in July 2020. The month-long crisis ended after the intervention of the party high command. Pilot was then removed as the deputy chief minister and state Congress president.

Addressing a programme in Dholpur, Gehlot said he as the state party chief, did not support the toppling of the BJP government led by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as it was unfair, in the same manner, Raje and Meghwal said that there is no tradition in Rajasthan to topple an elected government.

Meghwal is a former speaker of the state assembly and is currently an MLA.

“If I wanted, Bhairon Singh ji’s government could have been toppled. I said this was unethical work. The man who is ill, he is getting treatment in America, his condition was very critical and leaders of his party were conspiring to topple his government behind him,” Gehlot said.

He continued, “Kailash Meghwal and Vasundhara Raje also said the same thing. They said that we have never had a tradition to bring down elected governments on money power… what wrong did he do?”

Gehlot also praised MLA Shobharani Kushwah who had cross-voted in favour of the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election last year.

Dholpur MLA Kushwah was subsequently suspended by the BJP for cross-voting.

She was a bold lady, the chief minister said and added that “when Shobharani supported us, it shocked BJP leaders”.

Gehlot claimed that she listened to Raje and Meghwal and her conscience said that she should not support “those people”.

“That’s why our government was saved. I can never forget this incident in my life, which had happened with me,” he said.

Terming Gehlot’s “praises” for her as a big conspiracy, Raje in a statement on Sunday night said he “has made such outrageous and untrue allegations because of the rebellion happening in his own party and diminishing mass base”.

The BJP leader said that no one can insult her as much as Gehlot did in his life. To avoid a historic defeat in the 2023 assembly elections, he is creating such fabricated stories, which is unfortunate and not going to be successful, Raje said.

Gehlot and Raje have often been accused by their detractors in their own parties of “going soft” on each other, especially when it came to allegations of corruption.

The two leaders have denied any such understanding. A few days ago, Raje had rejected allegations of collusion with Gehlot as lie, saying milk and lemon juice never mix.

Gehlot also alleged that Union Ministers Amit Shah, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Dharmendra Pradhan had conspired together to topple his government.

“They distributed money in Rajasthan and they are not taking the money back now. I am surprised why they are not demanding the money back from them (the Congress MLAs who had revolted),” he claimed.

“I have even told the MLAs that whatever money they have taken, Rs 10 crore or Rs 20 crore, if you have spent anything, I will give that part or I will get it from AICC (All India Congress Committee),” he said.

Gehlot alleged that if the MLAs did not return the money, they will always be under pressure from Shah. “He is the Union home minister, he will intimidate…in Maharashtra he divided Shiv Sena,” he alleged.

In her statement, Raje also said giving and accepting bribes are crimes and if Congress MLAs have taken money, then FIR should be lodged. Gehlot has accused Home Minister Shah but Shah’s honesty and integrity is well known, she said.

In his address, Gehlot said that he was made the chief minister by the party for a third time and it was his duty to take all along and forget past happenings and ensure the return of the party to power in the assembly elections, slated for later this year.

The Congress leader was addressing the programme in the home turf Raje.

Gehlot also praised Congress MLAs Rohit Bohra, Chetan Dudi and Danish Abrar for alerting him about the revolt against his government in 2020.

He said that these three MLAs, BSP-turned-Congress MLAs and independent MLAs who had supported him and saved his government during the political crisis in 2020 deserved to be made ministers in his government but he could not do so due to political reasons and was sad about it.

Kerala: 20 killed as houseboat capsizes in Malappuram

    [ad_1]

Malappuram: Twenty people, including women and children, were killed when a houseboat with more than 30 passengers on board capsized and sank near the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area of Kerala’s Malappuram district on Sunday, the state government said.

Sports Minister V Abdurahiman said 20 deaths were confirmed on the basis of information from various hospitals where those pulled out from the water and inside the boat were admitted.

Four people in critical condition have been admitted to a Kottakkal hospital here, Abdurahiman said.

    MS Education Academy

Of the 20 bodies, 15 have been identified, the minister added.

“The boat is being hauled ashore and more bodies are expected to be recovered from inside,” he told PTI.

Abdurahiman said many of those who died were women and children who had come for a ride amid the ongoing school vacations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each victim.

“Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased,” Modi was quoted as saying in a tweet by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condoled the loss of lives in the accident.

In a tweet, he said, “Distraught by the news of a houseboat capsizing in Malappuram, Kerala. My heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones, and wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

“I appeal to Congress workers to assist authorities in rescue operations,” he said.

Health Minister Veena George has called an emergency meeting following the accident to assess the situation, the state government said in a statement.

George instructed that expert treatment be ensured for the injured and the post-mortem process sped up so that the bodies can be released quickly to the next of kin, the statement said.

The post-mortems will be conducted at Tirur, Thirurangadi, Perinthalmanna hospitals and Mancheri Medical College by bringing sufficient staff, including doctors, from districts such as Thrissur and Kozhikode, it said.

The minister has issued strict instructions to conduct the post-mortems from 6 am and, if possible, at the private hospitals also where some of the bodies have been kept, according to the statement.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Abdurahiman had said, “More victims are believed to be trapped under the boat and have to be brought out. The boat had overturned. The reason for it is not yet known. The police will investigate it.”

He is coordinating the rescue operations along with Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a statement condoling the deaths and directed the district collector to carry out a coordinated emergency rescue operation.

Fire and police units, officials from the Revenue and Health departments and local residents from Tanur and Tirur were involved in the rescue operation, the statement said.

The Chief Minister’s Office said Vijayan will visit the site on Monday.

According to the statement, Monday has been declared a day of official mourning and all government programmes stand postponed as a mark of respect to the victims.

Earlier, PK Kunhalikutty, an MLA of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), said the toll is expected to go up as rescue operations continue.

“It is a very tragic and unfortunate incident,” the former minister said.

Speaking to reporters from a government hospital near Tanur here, he said overcrowding is believed to have been the reason behind the vessel capsizing.

Boats are not supposed to go out for rides after 6 pm but it is believed that the rule was violated in this case, he added.

The incident occurred around 7 pm near an estuary close to the Thoovaltheeram beach in Tanur, the police said.

Those rescued were admitted to nearby private and government hospitals. The exact cause of the accident is not known at present, they added.
