EC asks BJP to provide evidence of allegations made against Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday issued a notice to the Karnataka BJP to provide “verifiable and traceable” facts by Tuesday evening regarding its newspaper advertisement that described the Congress as “the most corrupt party in the world”.

The Congress had approached the poll panel against the advertisement issued by the BJP’s Karnataka unit.

In its notice to the BJP Karnataka president, the Election Commission (EC) said criticism of the policy and governance of opponent parties is a right guaranteed and enshrined in the Constitution as well as an essential function of various political actors under India’s electoral process.

    MS Education Academy

“However, while exercising this right and performing this essential function, the various political parties are expected to uphold high standards of public discourse and adhere to the various provisions of the model code and relevant laws,” it said.

The commission has directed the state BJP to “convey the verifiable and traceable facts” regarding the claims made in the advertisement given by them along with an explanation, if any, by 8.00 pm on May 9 and also put that in “public domain”.

Earlier, it had issued a similar notice to the Congress for its “corruption rate card” advertisement.

Closely monitoring Guwahati child abuse case: Himanta Biswa Sarma

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said he is closely monitoring a case in which a doctor couple was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing children who they claimed were adopted by them.

Sarma, while addressing a press conference, said he will write to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to ensure that justice is delivered within six months.

‘I have asked the police to file the chargesheet within 30-45 days. I am monitoring the case on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

A doctor and his family’s domestic help were arrested in Guwahati on Saturday, while his psychiatrist wife, who is frequently seen in local TV channels’ talk shows on mental health, was caught on Sunday while trying to flee from the city.

The police have slapped various Sections of the IPC along with Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) against the doctor couple and their maid, who has also been arrested.

After their arrest, they were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate who remanded the couple to five days police custody and the maid to judicial custody.

The police had received information that a four-year-old girl was tied to a pole in the terrace of their apartment and kept there for hours, following which a team from Paltan Bazar police station went to their apartment and picked up the doctor and his family domestic help on Friday evening.

The girl was sent for a medical examination and according to the report, she was sexually abused and had injury marks on her body as well as private parts,

The couple claimed they have three children whom they have adopted but the police are investigating whether they had followed proper legal procedure for adoption, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah had said on Sunday.

The police also rescued the other two children from their apartment and sent them for medical examination.

The doctor’s wife had made a video on the day of his arrest and uploaded it on social media, claiming that a conspiracy was hatched to “defame and destroy” her family.

The Assam Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) has also taken cognisance of the matter and wrote to the civil and police administration to initiate an inquiry and take action against the accused.

  • Karnataka polls: Kejriwal’s absence disappoints AAP cadres

Karnataka polls: Kejriwal’s absence disappoints AAP cadres

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The absence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Karnataka in the run-up to the May 10 Assembly elections has disappointed the party cadres. It was also disheartening for the party supporters as they were expecting his presence in the state on May 8 — the last day of poll campaigning.

The AAP has been trying to make its mark in Karnataka after forming governments in Delhi and Punjab. The party was looking to bag seats in Bengaluru and urban centres in Karnataka.

Some people had even predicted that the AAP would prove to be a formidable opponent to the BJP.

    MS Education Academy

Kejriwal, the man who propelled AAP to power in the Delhi Assembly, and managed to put the party in power in Punjab, was expected to carry out an aggressive election campaign in Karnataka, especially when BJP heavyweights such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached almost every corner of the state and carried out an intensified election campaigning.

AAP leaders claimed that “BJP’s highhandedness and vindictive politics have restrained and forced Kejriwal from taking up extensive campaigning in Karnataka”.

Talking to IANS, Mohan Dasari, AAP Bengaluru City Working President, who is contesting from the C.V. Ramannagar seat in Bengaluru, said “the vendetta politics by the BJP against AAP has restrained Kejriwal from entering the Karnataka election campaign”.

“Kejriwal had come in the month of April. The party’s national leaders Raghav Chadha, Sanjay Singh, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and other ministers of the AAP also visited Karnataka. The elections are being taken seriously. Otherwise, no one would have come,” he said.

“Our leader Manish Sisodia is in jail due to false cases. When no excise policy was implemented, where was the corruption?” he questioned.

Dasari further said that Kejriwal showed how government hospitals and mohalla clinics can change the lives of middle class people and the poor class. “Since they were doing good work and the entire country was appreciative, they put these people behind bars with false cases,” he said.

“This election is being contested over local issues. People want a change. They were looking at good governance, good hospitals and homes for all, and we are working towards that,” Dasari said.

‘Give me an opportunity to become CM’: Shivakumar appeals to voters

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: On the last day of campaigning for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections, Congress’ Karnataka unit president D.K. Shivakumar on Monday appealed to the voters to give him an opportunity to become the Chief Minister of the state.

Addressing a massive rally in Ramanagara, Shivakumar said: “You have given a chance to H.D. Kumaraswamy who won here to become the CM. Now, you have to give an opportunity to Shivakumar as well.

“You have made Kengal Hanumantaiah as the CM, you made Deve Gowda as CM (former PM H.D. Deve Gowda), you made Ramakrishna Hegde as CM (late Karnataka CM). Now, can’t your son from this soil become CM?” he wondered while addressing the people.

    MS Education Academy

“Nikhil Kumaraswamy (contesting from Ramanagara seat and son of H.D. Kumaraswamy) is a young man. He has the opportunity to win from here in future. I am an aged person. If you want me to become the CM, the Congress should win here. Our candidate Iqbal Hussain must win here,” Shivakumar appealed to the people.

Currently, the Ramanagara seat is held by H.D. Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita Kumaraswamy. Her son Nikhil Kumaraswamy is contesting as JD-S candidate now.

  • Israel forces demolishes Palestinian school in West Bank

Israel forces demolishes Palestinian school in West Bank

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: Israeli forces on Sunday demolished a Palestinian school in the occupied West Bank under the pretext it was built in Area C without a permit, Anadolu Agency reported.

Accompanied by a bulldozer and trucks, forces demolished the school named Challenge 5. The surrounding Palestinian residential community of Jib al-Dib, east of Bethlehem, was also raided.

This led to clashes between Palestinian youth and the occupation forces. While young men threw stones and set tires on fire, the Israeli forces retaliated by firing tear gas and stun grenades.

    MS Education Academy

European Union (which funded the construction of the school) condemned the Israeli move as illegal.

Earlier, a right-wing Israeli organization had submitted a petition against the school claiming the Palestinians had “conquered” the land.

The European Union Delegation to the Palestinians, on its official Twitter account, said the demolition was “illegal under international law” and would “only increase the suffering of the Palestinian population and further escalate an already tense environment.”

The school was established in 2017, and it consists of five classrooms, and it serves students up to the fourth grade, and 81 students enroll in it, and it is built of bricks and roofed with tin panels.

The Israeli authorities prevent construction or land reclamation in Area C without permits, which are almost impossible to obtain, according to Palestinians and international human rights reports.

The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is considered occupied territory under international law, which makes all Israeli demolitions and settlement construction there illegal.

The Oslo Accords (1993) classified the lands of the West Bank into 3 areas— “A” under full Palestinian control, “B” under Israeli security and Palestinian administrative civil control, and “C” under Israeli civil, administrative and security control.

  • Telangana: A whopping 76 women will perform Haj without Mehram this year

Telangana: A whopping 76 women will perform Haj without Mehram this year

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: With preparations underway to welcome hajis ahead of Haj Season 2023, the Telangana State Haj Committee (TSCH) confirmed that 76 women applications have come from those who are ready to travel without a mehram (a male relative who is like a guardian and with whom marriage is unlawful).

Data shows that these 76 women, around 45 of whom are from Hyderabad, have applied to make the journey to Makkah in Saudi Arabia under the “without mehram” category which was introduced during the tenure of the then Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The number of applications received this year are significantly higher, given the fact that last year media reports stated that only four women had applied.

    MS Education Academy

TSHC sources said that there are broadly two reasons why the number of women who have resolved to perform the Haj this year is higher. The first is the unavailability of a mehram. The second is that the maslak (school of Islamic thought) of the nearly a quarter of these applicants permits them to make the pilgrimage alone without a mehram. A probable third reason is that awareness about this particular category has increased over time.

“One of the important reasons for these number of applications under the without mehram category is that their mehrams, sons or fathers or husbands of these women, are not living in India. They are living abroad. The without mehram category is convenient for them and provides for them to make the pilgrimage, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. It could be possible that their mehrams will join them at the pilgrimage. The second reason why we have seen a significant increase is on account of many women applicants being from the Shia community. There are about 22 or 23 such applications,” a source said.

In an attempt to make things easier for their women applicants, and also for the sake of bringing about a streamlining of processes in managing Haj pilgrims, the Union government decided to lay down a procedure that groups of four women who have applied under the without mehram category will be assigned a common cover number.

According to data, around 2,000 women from all over the country had applied under the without mehram category. Naqvi, who was attending an orientation programme in the national capital in May last year, said that about 3,000 women performed the haj without a mehram since the time the without mehram category was introduced.

While over 8,600 applications were sent to the TSHC this year, a total of 5,278 Haj pilgrims were selected and are scheduled to make their journey this year. It is likely that given the sliding of haj slots due to cancellations for various reasons, more from Telangana will make the pilgrimage.

  • EC asks Congress chief to clarify, rectify social media post on Karnataka’s sovereignty

EC asks Congress chief to clarify, rectify social media post on Karnataka’s sovereignty

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday asked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to clarify and rectify the party’s social media post on Karnataka’s sovereignty remark attributed to Sonia Gandhi.

The EC letter to Kharge came following a complaint by the Bharatiya Janata Party regarding a tweet which appeared on the official Twitter handle of the Indian National Congress on May 6.

In its complaint, the BJP has alleged, “Karnataka is a very important member state in the union of India and any call to protect the sovereignty of a member state of the Union of India amounts to a call for secession and is fraught with perilous & pernicious consequences.”

    MS Education Academy

The BJP also alleged in its complaint to the EC that the tweet is violative of the mandatory oath undertaken by the political parties under section 29A (5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 at the time of registration.

“In view of the above, you are requested to clarify and take rectification measures in respect of the social media post which has been put up on the INC Twitter handle and attributed to Chairperson, CPP,” the EC letter read.

A former Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi is currently the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson.

After Gandhi addressed a campaign rally in Hubballi in Karnataka on Saturday, the Congress tweeted from its official handle: “CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: ‘The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity’.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP have attacked the Congress over the remark.
