  • Children’s Day is just a gimmick

Children’s Day is just a gimmick

Today, 14th November, is Children’s Day.How do we celebrate Children’s Day ? By ensuring that no child is abused or exploited, no child is deprived of food, clothing, education, medicine and shelter, no child is treated with hatred and made to have an inferiority complex. But how do we ensure that ?

    Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru

The Supreme Court in several decisions has held that the right to life mentioned in Article 21 of the Constitution means the right to a life of dignity. Hence everyone, including children and women, are entitled to food, medical care, education, clothing, shelter, etc as these are part of a life of dignity.

But these are just words. Court verdicts, unless implemented on the ground, are just hollow talk. What is the ground reality ? The truth is that crores of our children are living in horrible conditions, without proper food, education, health care etc, often in slums with no proper electricity, water and toilet facilities, etc.

I once went to have a meal in a small restaurant. I was served by a tiny boy, about 10 or 12 years old. I asked him why was he working here, and was not in school ? He replied that his father was too poor to send him to school, so he had to work to earn some money.

So isn‘t celebrating Children’s Day hypocrisy and a gimmick ?

I am reminded of Sahir Ludhianvi’s verses :“ Zara mulk ke rehbaron ko bulao Yeh kooche yeh galiyaan yeh manzar dikhao Sanaakhwaan-e-taqdees-e-mashriq ko lao Sanaakhwaan-e-taqdees-e-mashriq kahaan hain ? “

  • The demand of Kashmiris for azaadi By Justice Markandey Katju

The demand of Kashmiris for azaadi By Justice Markandey Katju

    images 10

I condemn, and have always condemned, atrocities by Indian security forces, on innocent Kashmiris. But when Kashmiris demand azaadi ( freedom ) do they realise what the implications of azaadi are ?

Presently there is a huge handicraft industry in Kashmir, and the market for this are the hundreds of towns of India, in each of which there are shops of Kashmiris who bring their products ( carpets, shawls, pashmina, handicrafts, etc ) from Kashmir for sale in these shops.

    images 11

In big towns like Delhi there are dozens of such shops. Once I went to Kovalam beach near Tiruvananthipuram in Kerala, and found a couple of shops of Kashmiris there too. In Kulti, a small town in West Bengal ( near Asansol ) there is a Kashmiri shop. Similarly, wherever one goes in India—north, west, south or east—one will find shops of Kashmiris selling their wares which they have brought from Kashmir in towns there.

Now if India becomes azaad, what will happen ? Kashmiris then cannot enter into India without a visa, and a visa will be next to impossible to obtain. The market for the products of Kashmiri handicraft industry will then disappear, and the industry will close down, throwing hundreds of thousands of Kashmiris out of employment, apart from bankrupting the owners. Will this not bring further misery to Kashmiris, who are already suffering from unemployment, etc ?

The horticulture industry ( which grows apples, babboogosha, akhrot, baadaam, etc ) will also similarly suffer.

When I mentioned this to some Kashmiri youth they said we will find a market elsewhere. But where ? It is not easy to find a new market. Pakistanis will not like competition, and as for the Chinese, experience shows that having economic ties with them can lead to bondage of a colonial type.

Kashmiris ( apart from JNU students and others ) do not think of the implications of what they say, but keep parroting ‘azaadi, azaadi’

You can’t eat freedom. You need food. And to get food you need a job. If freedom results in unemployment ( because the industry will close down if the market disappears ) what use is such freedom ?

Customs Officials Arrest 7, Seize 61 Kg Gold Worth ₹32 Cr; Claims “highest Ever” Seizure In A Day At Mumbai Airport

    [ad_1]

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport witnessed two separate operations by customs officials result in the seizure of 61 kg of gold valued at Rs 32 crore, an official said on Sunday, making it the department’s greatest value seizure at an airport in a single day, according to reports.

An official who said that the seizures conducted on Friday resulted in the arrest of at least seven travellers, including five men and two women.

He claimed that this was the largest single-day seizure in the history of the Mumbai airport customs.

Four Indians returning from Tanzania were found carrying 1 kg gold bars in the first operation; the bars were hidden inside specially made belts with numerous pockets, the officer said according to the report.

News agency PTI quoted an official who said that officials found 53 kg of UAE-made gold bars worth Rs 28.17 crore hidden within the passengers’ torso-hugging belts.

According to the official, a Sudanese national at Doha Airport gave the travellers their belts during the transit period.

He said a court had taken the four travellers into jail and remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody. Similarly, he added that three passengers who had come from Dubai had 8 kilogramme of gold worth Rs 3.88 crore seized from them by customs officials.

He said that the trio, which included two ladies, was carrying waxy gold dust. The official said that the gold was cleverly hidden in the waistband of the travellers’ jeans.

He added that the trio were detained and remanded to judicial custody, and that one of the women was in her late 60s and using a wheelchair.

  • Twitter Suspends $8 Subscription Based Verification After Fake Accounts Created Mess

Twitter Suspends $8 Subscription Based Verification After Fake Accounts Created Mess

    [ad_1]

Elon Musk’s Twitter suspended the subscription-based blue tick verification badges on Friday, only days after introducing them as part of a slew of changes. The social media site planned to charge $8 to users who wanted the premium blue tick verification badge, but as soon as the service went live, several fake “verified” accounts appeared on Twitter, causing the platform to reconsider its decision.

Previously, blue tick verification was provided to notable figures in various fields such as entertainment, politics, journalism, and so on to avoid impersonation, but after Tesla co-founder Elon Musk took over the social media giant in a $44 billion takeover deal, the company decided to change the verification policy and decided to provide blue tick to anyone willing to pay $8 for the service.

Following the launch of the service, numerous fake accounts, including Elon Musk’s own Tesla and SpaceX, appeared with a blue tick. An impersonator account even claimed that ‘insulin is free,’ prompting pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly & Co. to issue an apology via Twitter.

There are currently two types of verified accounts on Twitter: one that was verified before to Musk’s takeover and states, “This account is verified because it is notable in government, news, entertainment, or another specified category.” The other verified account belongs to a person who paid $8 for Twitter Blue service.

The payment for the blue tick badge was necessary because analysts believe Musk overpaid for the $44 billion contract, which he is now realising. He has sold billions of dollars in shares from his other firm, Tesla, and has also raised funds from the markets. Several sponsors have paused their Twitter commercials as they learn about the new leadership’s policies, and the current mess of fake accounts has made them even more sceptical.

Elon Musk has recently cautioned Twitter employees to brace long hours as the firm approaches bankruptcy. The warning came as the US regulator announced the departure of the company’s trust and safety chief, as well as other top officials.

Musk cautioned in his first company-wide email that Twitter will not “survive the upcoming economic slump” if it does not increase subscription revenue to balance dwindling advertising revenue, according to three people who saw the message, reports Reuters.
