India’s Exports Fell 17% To $29.78 Bn In Oct, Trade Deficit Widens To $26.91 Bn

    [ad_1]

India’s exports fell 17% to $29.78 billion in October, while its trade deficit increased to $26.91 billion.

According to data released by the commerce ministry on Tuesday, the country’s overall outbound shipments decreased by 16.65% to $29.78 billion in October as a result of a decline in some sectors’ merchandise exports, and the merchandise trade deficit increased to $26.91 billion from $25.71 billion the previous month, news agency PTI reported.

The report showed that imports for the month totaled $56.69 billion, compared to $53.64 billion in October 2021.

This year, from April to October, exports increased by 12.55 percent to $263.35 billion. Data show that imports increased 33.12% to $436.81 billion.

Between September 2022 and October 2022, both merchandise exports and imports slowed sequentially, which, in our opinion, was caused by more holidays associated with the holiday season.

In spite of the significant YoY decrease in the merchandise exports statistic, the trade deficit worsened in MoM terms during this time, albeit not alarmingly, according to ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar who was quoted by Livemint.

When compared to November 2021, which had a later start to the holiday season, the sequential trend of exports in October 2022 is similar to what was observed in November 2021.

Given the current global demand issues, Nayar continued, “At this point, we anticipate some recovery in exports and imports in November 2022 relative to October 2022, albeit it may not be as substantial as the pattern seen in November and December of 2021.

  • Kathua Rape Accused To Be Tried As ‘Adult’, Not ‘Juvenile’: Supreme Court

Kathua Rape Accused To Be Tried As ‘Adult’, Not ‘Juvenile’: Supreme Court

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that one of the accused in the gang-rape and murder trial of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Kathua was not a juvenile and can now be prosecuted again as an adult.

The top court further stated that in the absence of statutory proof on the same problem, medical opinions on an accused person’s age cannot be “swept aside”, news agency PTI reported.

“Medical opinion regarding age in absence of any other conclusive evidence should be considered to determine the age range of the accused…Whether medical evidence can be relied upon or not depends on the value of evidence,” a bench of justices Ajay Rastogi and JB Pardiwala said.

It reversed the rulings of the high court and the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kathua, which had determined that the accused was a minor and needed to be tried separately.

“We set aside the judgments of the CJM Kathua and the high court and hold that the accused was not a juvenile at the time of commission of offence,” Justice Pardiwala said while pronouncing the verdict.

The girl was raped in a Kathua village in 2019. Three men were given life sentences in this case by a special court in June 2019, and three police officers received five-year sentences for evidence destruction. However, the Juvenile Justice Board was given the case against one of the accused.

  • What India requires is a modern minded dictatorship.

What India requires is a modern minded dictatorship.

    What is to be done

    By Justice Katju

What India requires is a modern minded dictatorship determined to rapidly industrialise and modernise the country, e.g. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who rapidly modernised Turkey in the 1920s, or the advisers of Emperor Meiji who rapidly modernised Japan after the Meiji Restoration of 1868.

    Ataturk1930s
    Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

They did not do this democratically. The majority have reactionary, backward feudal mindsets and do not want modernisation. If their consent is sought, they will oppose it tooth and nail, and there will never be any modernisation, and the country will remain backward and feudal.

In India, we adopted the system of parliamentary democracy. But this runs largely on the basis of caste and religion vote banks. Casteism and communalism are feudal forces, which have to be destroyed if India is to progress, but parliamentary democracy further entrenches them. So it has to be replaced by a system under which the country rapidly moves forward.

What will this alternative system be is a matter which requires seriously consideration by the patriotic modern minded thinkers in the country

Five Journalists From Kashmir Resigned Allegedly After Getting Militant Threats

    [ad_1]

Five journalists who were employed by a local newspaper in Kashmir have quit after receiving online threats from militants, according to reports.

Recently, militants published a list of more than a dozen journalists who were reportedly employed by security services, IANS reported.

There were two local newspaper editors among the people on the list. Three of the five journalists who left their jobs on Tuesday posted their resignations on social media.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a militant organisation affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), is allegedly responsible for these threats, according to the authorities.

The threats’ contents show what militants and anti-national elements have in mind. By openly accusing them of being corrupt and issuing a clear threat, they have endangered people’s lives, particularly those of media professionals, according to the police.

According to the police, a FIR has been filed in this matter, and over a dozen suspects have been apprehended and are currently undergoing questioning.

As militants threatened to target everyone working for three media outlets in Srinagar, three reporters posted their resignations on their social media profiles to avoid any difficulties.

A young reporter who covered local news claims that he has been charged with spreading the army narrative. He decided to quit his job, reports NDTV.

Such threats, according to the BJP, are unacceptable, and no one should be permitted to threaten journalists.

“Terrorists have touched new lows, which is against people and against the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression,” NDTV quoted RS Pathania, spokesperson of the BJP.

  • While Raising The Tricolour, A Kashmiri Youth Lost His Hand And Leg In Kishtwar

While Raising The Tricolour, A Kashmiri Youth Lost His Hand And Leg In Kishtwar

    [ad_1]

The “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign was in full swing in August 2022, both nationally and especially in Jammu and Kashmir. The people actively participated in this initiative.

On one side, people were busy decorating their homes’ roofs with the tricolour flag on August 13.

According to The Chenab Times video report, Mohammad Anwar, a native of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kapran Shahabad Veerinag, is a young man who came to Kishtwar district for study because of his poor financial situation and was forced to accept employment at a man’s home in Kishtwar. But Anwar described the good nature of his master, in whose home he was living in Kishtwar, as they paid his medical expenses until now after this incident.

    The tragedy

The tragic incident with Anwar happened on August 13. When the landlord of Muhammad Anwar asked him to bring a pipe so that he can install the tricolour flag at the residence, Anwar held an iron pipe, and while standing the pipe, it came into contact with a power transmission line, due to which Anwar was electrocuted. The landlord of Anwar immediately took him to the District Hospital Kishtwar, from where he was referred to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar. In this tragic incident, Anwar lost his right hand and leg completely.

Unfortunately, as of November 15, there is no FIR regarding this incident, according to Anwar. When a Chenab Times correspondent asked him whether any police officials had met or visited him, he said that no one met him after this incident. On November 14, he went back to Kishtwar to lodge an FIR so that he could get compensation from the concerned authorities because he was now handicapped and could not earn for his family.

    Police response

When CT tried to contact Jammu and Kashmir Police officials in Kishtwar, no calls were received. An official saw our WhatsApp message but didn’t respond until the day this report is filed. We contacted Anwar’s lawyer; he said that they had moved to court regarding this, and the court has directed the police to lodge an FIR.

    The unanswered questions

The question is whether Anwar will get compensation for living his life or whether he will keep knocking on doors for help. For losing his hand and leg for the tricolour, whether the Jammu and Kashmir government give honour to him and help him or not. These questions will remain unanswered until some practical developments take place.

رو میں ہے رخش عمر کہاں دیکھیے تھمے

نے ہاتھ باگ پر ہے نہ پا ہے رکاب میں

This sher of Ghalib describes the age we are living in. Rau means galloping, rakhsh means horse, umr means age or era, thame means halts.

    images 19
    Mirza Ghalib

So the first line means “ The horse of our times is galloping. Let us see where it halts “. In other words, things are happening fast nowadays, developments are taking place rapidly.

In the second line, ‘baagh’ means the rein ( of the horse ), ‘rakaab’ means stirrup. So the literal meaning of the second line is “ neither are the reins in the rider’s hands, nor are his feet in the stirrups “. In other words, things are out of control.

This seems to describe conditions in India today, where developments are taking place fast, but everything seems to be out of control

  • Bazzaat Kashmiri’s by Justice Katju

    Bazzaat Kashmiri’s by Justice Katju

I have joked about many communities, Bengalis, Tamils, Biharis, Nagas, etc, so naturally people asked me to joke about my own community, Kashmiris.

There is a Persian adage that one should avoid 3 types of people : awwal Afghan, doyam Kambo, soyam bazzaat Kashmiri ( i.e. first Afghans, second Kambos, third rascally Kashmiris )

Now regarding Afghans and Kambos the meaning is clear. They are all to be avoided.

But regarding Kashmiris, there is a confusion. The word ‘bazzaat’ has only been used before the word ‘Kashmiri’, not before ‘Afghan’ or ‘Kambo’.

So one meaning can be that whereas all Afghans and Kambos are wicked, and hence all of them are to be avoided, but only wicked ( bazzaat ) Kashmiris are to be avoided, not the good ones.

But the other interpretation can be that the word ‘bazzaat’ has only been used before the word ‘Kashmiri’ to emphasise that Kashmiris are particularly bazzaat ( wicked ), even more than Afghans and Kambos.

Now it is for you folks to decide which interpretation is correct. I, being a Kashmiri, would naturally prefer the first

  • Swami Vishnudevanand ‘ of Yoga Vedanta Kutir, Allahabad by Justice Markandey Katju

Swami Vishnudevanand ‘ of Yoga Vedanta Kutir, Allahabad by Justice Markandey Katju

When I was in Allahabad I would go regularly to a yogi sadhu, Swami Vishnudevanand Saraswati, to learn yoga. He had his ashram where he lived next to the Ganga bandh.

He was a Bengali and had become a sadhu at a very young age. He travelled to many places in north India looking for a guru, and had come to Allahabad during the Kumbh Mela of 1930, where he settled down there, becoming a disciple of another sadhu, Handia baba, who is said to have lived till he was 104 ( Swami Vishnudevanand told me he wanted to live longer than his guru, but he died when he was about 94 ).

Swamiji used to teach hath yoga in his ashram. Once Dr Sur, an eminent physician of Allahabad, came to Swamiji and said he had not been able to sleep for several days. Swamiji taught him a yogic kriya, which put Dr Sur to sleep continuously for 48 hours, after which he got up refreshed, and became normal. Thus, Swamiji was the doctor of even doctors.Similarly, Swamiji helped many people who would come to him.

Unlike ordinary Hindus whose bodies are cremated on their death, the body of a sadhu is not cremated, but is either buried ( the burial place is called a ‘samadhi’, or is immersed in a river ( called ‘jal samadhi‘ ). This is because when a person becomes a sanyaasi he has to perform his own funeral rites. So funeral rites cannot be performed twice. Swami Vishnudevanand’s samadhi, as well as that of his guru, are near the Ganga bandh

Swami Vishnudevanand had a lot of NRI disciples who lived in America, and who often invited him there. He told me a story of what happened there once.Swamiji was giving a religious discourse to NRIs in America, and during this discourse he said “ You people living in America have your brains in your pocket “.

At this, one gentleman in the audience got up angrily and asked “ How do you say we have our brains in our pocket ? “.

Swamiji replied coolly “ I will tell you. Suppose President Reagan ( who was the American President then ) gave you a cheque of 40 million dollars, and you put that cheque in your pocket. Where will your brains be ? “.

Everyone in the audience spoke out loudly “ In his pocket. Well said Swamiji. Jai ho aapki “
