Joshimath crisis: Pets and cattle displaced as owners navigate subsidence fallout

    [ad_1]

Joshimath: As land sinks in Joshimath, buildings are razed and hundreds of families are forced out of their homes, there is another tragedy playing out in this Himalayan town many dogs, cattle, and other domestic animals are left untended as their owners navigate the life-changing crisis.

Some animals have been left behind in houses, desolate and deserted as the cracks on their walls deepen, and some smaller pets have been crammed into shelter homes along with families forced into one room. The snow and the dipping temperatures have exacerbated the many woes.

The displacement is at many levels, say animal rights activists who have rushed to the once bustling town of Joshimath to keep the voiceless safe.

“Any disaster is as much a crisis for animals as it is for humans,” said Rubina Iyer from People for Animals (PFA) Uttarakhand.

“We want to ensure the safety and welfare of the animals. People are taking care of humans, and we are here for the animals,” Iyer, who traveled from Dehradun to Joshimath along with her colleagues to help rescue affected animals, told PTI.

The mountain town, the gateway to trekking trails, pilgrimage destinations such as Badrinath and the famed ski slopes of Auli, has been on the edge since January 2 when the first major land subsidence event took place and hairline fissures in several places deepened into gaping breaks in walls and streets with a frightening rumble.

Families were segregated, and many pets and cattle were neglected as people moved out to safety.

Neha Saklani, whose house in the Sunil area on the way to Auli was heavily damaged during the subsidence event, said they have four pets.

“One of them is with us in the hotel, while the three others are at our house. But we check on them in the day and feed them,” she said.

Iyer said surveys are being carried out for a count of pets or stray animals and, if required, help with shifting them to shelter homes.

“If there are any pets and people don’t have space we can keep them safe.”
So far, 200 dogs, 300 cattle, and 20 equines have been identified in surveys from the affected areas, said Shreya Paropkari from Humane Society International/India (HSI).

“All are doing well except for two injured mules being shifted to the Happy Home Sanctuary run by PFA Uttarakhand in Dehradun,” she told PTI

“Our surveys found no abandoned pets in the affected areas. Wherever people are being shifted they are taking their pets along,” Paropkari said.

HSI also plans to sterilize dogs so there are no puppies born during this calamity as it will be difficult for them to survive.

“Based on the current assessment, they would all need surgery – when the weather is suitable. Currently, it’s snowing,” Paropkari added.

Chief Veterinary Officer, Chamoli, D. Pralayankar Nath said the Animal Husbandry Department here is taking all precautions and making necessary arrangements to shelter stray animals and pets.

“For cattle, we are making two shelters in Sunil ward and in Ravigram area. We are distributing compact feed and green fodder. Pets are being provided feed and the necessary help,” said Nath, who has been stationed in Joshimath since January 2.

“We are taking help from the NGOs to identify any affected or abandoned pets so that we can shift them to shelters and take care of them,” he said.

In her three-day tour of Joshimath, Kaveri Rana Bhardwaj from Sophie Memorial Animal Relief Trust (S.M.A.R.T Sanctuary) has fed many street animals in Joshimath, Auli road, and the upper reaches.

A helpline number has been set up in case someone needs a home for their dogs, Bharadwaj said.

Sometimes, animals require urgent medical attention too.

The group, for instance, found a small local breed dog with a twisted leg that needed to be X-rayed.

There are many stray dogs in Joshmath that can easily be mistaken for abandoned canines, Iyer said.

“We found equines and a lot of stray animals because sometimes if they are ill or become unproductive or for that matter are injured, people do sometimes abandon them in the streets to die,” said Iyer.

Iyer said since authorities are planning to rehabilitate displaced people, their pets will also be taken along with the owners to new locations.

  • Shift warehouses to city outskirts: Kishan Reddy on recent fires

Shift warehouses to city outskirts: Kishan Reddy on recent fires

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union tourism minister G Kishan Reddy on Friday urged the Telangana government to shift godowns and warehouses operating in residential areas without necessary permissions to the city outskirts.

Keeping in mind the fire incident reported at Ministers Road at Secunderabad in a sports store (which continued for over a day and resulted in a death), Kishan Reddy asked the government to check buildings and other structures in Hyderabad to follow basic fire safety standards.

Reddy said that “learning a lesson” from such an incident will be beneficial in the future. He also spoke to the residents of the colony who were affected by the fire accident.

The union minister instructed officials from the Fire department to make sure that people who were living in fear of the same building collapsing after the fire incident to be provided with all sorts of necessities like food and shelter. The minister also said to arrange a medical camp for the people to check the impact of the toxic fumes that evolved during this incident.

BJP leader and former vice-chairman of the national disaster management authority Marri Shashidhar Reddy a day earlier also wrote to Telangana chief secretary A Santhi Kumari and requested her to go into detail about the incident including the efforts made to douse the flames.

Going through this detail in bringing the fire under control, Shashidhar Reddy said that officials had found it difficult to get water tankers to fill up the empty fire engines. He added that there is an immediate need to make a committee of experts to make a comprehensive study, document response actions, identify defects, shortcomings, and make recommendations for prevention and better preparedness- all in a time-bound and transparent manner.

Observing the incident that took place on January 19, Shashidhar Reddy said it was the third major incident that broke out in 10 months in Secunderabad, which left 19 people dead in the first two incidents. He felt that except for the people’s representatives making photo-ops and giving statements every time, investigations into the causes of such accidents weren’t made public.

WhatsApp rolling out voice status updates on iOS beta

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new ‘voice status updates’ feature on iOS beta, which will allow users to share voice notes via status updates.

Selected beta testers can now share voice notes as status updates by accessing the new feature within the text status section, reports WABetaInfo.

The maximum recording time for a voice note is 30 seconds, and users also have the option to forward voice notes from their chats to status.

The platform also provides users more control over their voice recordings by offering the ability to discard a recording before sharing it.

Similar to images and videos, voice notes shared via status will automatically disappear after 24 hours and users can delete them for everyone at any time.

Moreover, the shared voice notes are end-to-end encrypted so only people whom users choose can listen to them.

The new feature is expected to be widely rolled out to more users over the coming weeks, the report said.

On Wednesday, it was reported that the messaging platform was rolling out the same feature on Android beta.

  • Reverse decrees limiting women’s rights, UN urges Taliban

Reverse decrees limiting women’s rights, UN urges Taliban

    [ad_1]

Kabul: A high-level UN delegation led by the Deputy Secretary-General called on the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan to reverse the course on recent decrees limiting women’s and girls’ rights, saying Afghans must not be abandoned.

On behalf of the Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Executive Director of UN Women Sima Bahous, and the Assistant Secretary-General of the Department of Political, Peacebuilding Affairs, and Peace Operations, Khaled Khiari, completed a four-day visit to Afghanistan to appraise the situation, engage de facto authorities and underscore UN solidarity with the Afghan people.

In meetings with the Taliban in both Kabul and Kandahar, the delegation directly conveyed the alarm over the recent decree banning women from working for national and international NGOs, a move that undermines the work of numerous organizations helping millions of vulnerable Afghans.

The Taliban recently moved to close universities to female students across the country until further notice, and have also barred girls from attending secondary school; restricted women and girls’ freedom of movement; excluded women from most areas of the workforce; and banned women from using parks, gyms, and public bath houses.

“My message was very clear: while we recognize the important exemptions made, these restrictions present Afghan women and girls with a future that confines them in their own homes, violating their rights and depriving the communities of their services,” Mohammed said.

“Our collective ambition is for a prosperous Afghanistan that is at peace with itself and its neighbors, and on a path to sustainable development. But right now, Afghanistan is isolating itself, in the midst of a terrible humanitarian crisis and one of the most vulnerable nations on earth to climate change,” she said.

“We must do everything we can to bridge this gap.”

During their mission, Mohammed and Bahous met with affected communities, humanitarian workers, civil society, and other key actors, in Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat.

“We have witnessed extraordinary resilience. Afghan women left us no doubt of their courage and refusal to be erased from public life. They will continue to advocate and fight for their rights, and we are duty-bound to support them in doing so,” Bahous said.

“What is happening in Afghanistan is a grave women’s rights crisis and a wake-up call for the international community. It shows how quickly decades of progress on women’s rights can be reversed in a matter of days. UN Women stands with all Afghan women and girls and will continue to amplify their voices to regain all their rights.”

The US and its partners, including national and international NGOs, are helping more than 25 million Afghans who depend on humanitarian aid to survive, and remain committed to staying and delivering.

The most recent decrees issued by the Taliban banning women from working for NGOs have forced many partners to pause operations that can no longer be safely and meaningfully delivered.

While the recent exemptions to the ban introduced by the de facto authorities are opening spaces for humanitarians to continue, and in some cases, resume, operations, these remain limited to a few sectors and activities.

“The effective delivery of humanitarian assistance is predicated on principles that require full, safe, and unhindered access for all aid workers, including women”, Mohammed said.

The visit followed a series of high-level consultations on Afghanistan across the Gulf and Asia.

The delegation met the leadership of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Islamic Development Bank, groups of Afghan women in Ankara and Islamabad, and a group of Ambassadors and Special Envoys to Afghanistan based in Doha.

It convened with government leaders from the region and religious leaders to advocate for the crucial role and full participation of women and rally support for the Afghan people.

Throughout the visits, countries and partners recognized the critical role of the UN in building bridges to finding lasting solutions, as well as the urgency to deliver lifesaving support and maintain effective engagement, led by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

They asked that efforts be intensified to reflect the urgency of the situation and stressed the importance of a unified response by the international community.

The need for a revitalised and realistic political pathway was consistently highlighted and all remained firm on the fundamental principles, including women’s and girls’ rights to education, work and public life in Afghanistan.

There was broad consensus that the region and the OIC’s leadership on these issues was critical.

The proposal of an international conference on women and girls in the Muslim World during the month of March was also considered and agreed in principle.
