    Nocturnal Gunfight Breaks Out In South Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: A nocturnal gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Padgampora area in South Kashmir’s Awantipora on Tuesday late night.

    One militant has been killed in the ongoing encounter; however identity of the slain militant is yet to be ascertained.

    Meanwhile two army troopers also received bullet wounds in the gunfight. They have been subsequently shifted to hospital for further treatment.

    Earlier Reports said that a joint team of Police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Padgampora.

    As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Last rites of Sanjay Sharma, an ATM bank guard, who was shot dead by militants on Sunday, were performed on Monday in his native place. Hundreds of villagers attended the funeral and stood with the grief-stricken family.

    PDP president visited the family of a slain bank guard, Sanjay Sharma at their ancestral residence in Achan Pulwama on February 27, 2023. Sanjay was killed on Sunday by unidentified militants in his village.

    Sanjay Sharma’s family was the only Pandit family living in the otherwise Muslim-majority Achan village as they had refused to leave their native village in the 1990s. Of the four brothers, only one had migrated and is living in Udhampur. His parents also stayed put and passed away in the same village.

    The Jammu and Kashmir police are suspecting the role of The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow militant outfit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba ( LET) in the killing of Sanjay Sharma.
    Quoting Additional Director General (ADGP) Vijay Kumar, The Hindu reported that LeT’s TRF is behind the killing and police have stepped up the search for three local and two foreign militants active in the region.

    To denounce the killing and to express condolence and solidarity with the family silent candlelight protests were held at many places in the valley. One such protest was reported from Pulwama’s main Chowk.

    “In a fight between Muslim Kashmir and Hindu India, religious minorities living in Kashmir are becoming a scapegoat,” KPSS, a Srinagar-based Pandit group said. It called for initiating a “brutal operation” against the killers.

    BJP also held protests at several places in Kashmir and burnt an effigy of Pakistan, holding the neighbouring country responsible for the killing. The main protest was held in the Jawahar Nagar area of the city where dozens of party workers protested against the killing. Protesting party workers appealed to the LG administration to ensure the security of minorities and take steps to prevent such incidents in future.

  • I&FC Employee Dies After Pole Falls On Him

    SRINAGAR: An employee of Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department died after an electric pole fell on him at Watlab area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

    Quoting an official the news agency  KNO reported that an I&FC employee was critically injured after an electric pole fell on him while he was repairing a genset. He was rushed to the sub-district hospital, Sopore where doctors declared him dead.news agency

    The deceased was identified as Tanveer Ahmed Bhat ,30, son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat of Darpora Delina in Baramulla.

    Meanwhile, police have taken the cognizance of the incident and are investigating the matter.

    SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta Monday had a whirlwind tour of Srinagar City. He took on-spot assessment of different developmental works taken up under  Smart City and by other executing agencies around the city and also fixed the timeline for completion of each.

    Chief Secretary was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir; Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar; Commissioner, SMC, VC, LCMA, and many other concerned officers of Police and Civil administration.

    Dr Mehta observed that the city is going to change for better by mid April this year. He said that the city is going to change its outlook altogether with the completion of these projects at different stages of execution presently. He further added that these works would give a massive facelift to the city thereby enhancing its appeal for all the residents and tourists.

    The Chief Secretary visited different project sites under Smart City Mission. He took stock of the progress of work on each of them and passed on several directions for their early completion. He stressed on timely completion of all these works in the wake upcoming tourist session.

    While taking on-spot assessment of the Jhelum River front development the Chief Secretary enjoined upon the officers to complete the work by 15th of April. He asked them to develop the footpath including its finishing, cycle track, green spaces, landscaping and undergrounding of electrical cables etc forthwith. The project is to be completed at a cost of Rs 32.50 Cr.

    At Polo View, the Chief Secretary emphasized on making the entire area aesthetically appealing adopting an integrated approach. He asked for facade improvement of adjoining buildings and carry out other beautification works simultaneously. The work also includes laying of PQC along polo view tube, macadamisation of new Polo View Road, Construction of office cum toilet block, fencing by iron grill panels, rationalization of utilities, laying of quality tiles and stones and creating seating arrangement around chinar trees besides landscaping of the area.

    On visit to Dal Lake, Dr Mehta inspected the work of lake front development along Northern Foreshore Road of the Lake from Nishat to Naseem Bagh including pedestrian walkway and  urged the authorities to ensure its completion by 15th of April this year. He also instructed for completing the lighting of Western Fore Shore Road by 15th of March itself.

    The Chief Secretary highlighted the need for connecting all the houseboats with the STPs. He directed for utilizing the 36 MLD capacity of Sewage Treatment optimally and connect all the 900 houseboats in the lake with the Sewage lines. He asked them to divert the residual to oxidation ponds out of the 48 MLD produced daily.

    He exhorted upon the concerned to start the motorboats to commence their cruise and initiate water sports activities in the lake by 15th of March. He asked them to repair all the Jetties and segregate them from the ones for motor boats. He told the Culture Department to start their activities full throttle at 5-Chinar by 15th of March and turn Pratap Park in the heart of the civil lines of the city into a culture centre.

    The Chief Secretary also examined the works for upgradation and redevelopment of Nishat Bagh precinct including allied road works, pathways, plaza, wooden deck and landscaping of its surroundings. He also reviewed redevelopment of Residency Road including construction of underground utilities and improvement and upgradation of Maulana Azad Road. He made out that all these road stretches are very vital as these lead to city centre. He underscored the need for completing all these developmental works by April.

    Regarding other works he instructed for ornamental plantations on road medians, painting of grills/kerbs, improvement of Dal Gate and Gupkar junctions, erection of around 1500 lights in the lanes and bye-lanes, erection of view cutter on all fly overs, sprucing-up of Iqbal Park, Boundary wall of Hazratbal shrine, Macdamization of city roads and the parking lot near Lal-Ded Hospital before April.

    He also urged all the departments to carryout improvement, distempering, painting, focus lighting etc. of their buildings and sprucing up of green areas within their jurisdiction by the scheduled time. He further directed for making functional all the billboards in and around the city with banners relating to 38 new tourist & trekking destinations, heritage sites, Sufi shrines by the end of March.

    SRINAGAR: The autonomy of the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) has ceased, as the Institute’s Director has been directed to submit all matters for clearance to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

    The management of SKIMS has been delegated to the Health and Medical Education Department, according to the department’s official communiqué.

    The document adds, “Accordingly, I am directed to notify you that moving forward, all matters, proposals, and case files may be submitted for consideration by/approval by the Competent Authority (HLG) through the Department of Health and Medical Education.”

    “The case files/references/proposals received from the SKIMS and presently lying in General Administration Department are accordingly returned herewith in the 1″ phase for further action as per the existing TBRs.” it adds further.

    Substantially, SKIMS is the only medical university in the union territory of J&K, headed by a Director who is also the Ex-officio Secretary to the Government.

    The governing board of SKIMS, which serves as the cabinet for the declared university and the semi-autonomous super-specialty hospital, is presided over by Lieutenant Governor J&K.

    In addition to the deemed university and the main hospital, the institute comprises the State Cancer Institute, Maternity Hospital, Nursing college, Paramedical college, and an affiliated medical college & hospital which is on the city outskirts at Bemina.

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday claimed to have arrested seven drug peddlers in Baramulla & Kulgam and recovered a huge quantity of contraband substances from their possession.

    In Baramulla, a police party led by SHO PS Sheeri under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Baramulla Sajjad Bukhari during naka checking at NHW Gantamulla arrested three drug peddlers identified as Ishfaq Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Hassan Mir resident of Chijhama Rafiabad, Ashiq Hussain Najar son of Altaf Hussain Najar resident of Shougpora and Reyaz Ahmad Sheikh resident of Ghulam Ahmad resident of Dardpora Kupwara A/P Rangwar Baramulla, a police spokesman said in a statement issued to the news agency KNO.

    During checking, 22 grams of Brown Sugar like substance was recovered from their possession. They have been shifted to the police station where they remain in custody, police said.

    Similarly, officers led by SHO PS Pattan under the supervision of SDPO Pattan Mohd Nawaz at a checkpoint established at Buran Railway Crossing Pattan intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number JK05B-2156 with two persons on board. During the search, 250 Spasmo-Proxyvon tablets and 23 Codeine Phosphate bottles were recovered from their possession. They have been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Sada son of Mohd Subhan Sada resident of Pattan and Ajaz Ahmad Dar son of Habibulla Dar resident of Shalteng Srinagar. They have been arrested and shifted to the police station where they remain in custody. The vehicle used in the commission of the crime has also been seized.

    In Kulgam, acting on specific information regarding the transportation of drugs, a police party led by SHO PS Yaripora established multiple checkpoints at different places. During one such checkpoint established at Behibrada, one vehicle (Load Carrier) bearing registration number JK03J-1593 was intercepted.

    During checking, 12Kgs of grinded Cannabis like substances and 11 bottles of Cofmaster C were recovered from the vehicle. The driver of the said vehicle identified as Riyaz Ahmad Malla son of Mohd Yaseen Malla resident of Khanabal Anantnag has been arrested. The vehicle used in the commission of the crime has also been seized.

    Similarly, during another checkpoint established at Kokergund crossing, police arrested a drug peddler identified as Mohd Shafi Nadaf son of Abdul Majeed Nadaf resident of Yaripora, and recovered 12 bottles of Cofmart CD from his possession. Both the drug peddlers have been shifted to the police station where they remain in custody, police said.

    Accordingly, police said that cases under relevant sections of the law have been registered at respective police stations and an investigation has been initiated.

    Meanwhile, police urged people to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighborhood. “Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt with as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” police said.

    SRINAGAR: Two youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district in the last 24 hours, officials said here on Monday.

    An official said that last evening a youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in an orchard at his native village in Guddar.

    He said similarly today evening a 19-year-old youth allegedly hanged himself in his home in Nanibug village.

    “He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” he said.

    Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of both incidents and started further investigation. (KNO)

    SRINAGAR: National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, (NEET) PG, 2023 is not postponed as Supreme Court  of India dismissed the postponement plea on Monday.

    The matter related to NEET PG 2023 postponement was heard by a bench comprising of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Dipankar Datta. Upon hearing the matter, the apex court has decided to not postpone the NEET PG 2023 Exam.

    The petitioners had sought for the postponement of the entrance exam by two to three months. They wanted the exam to postponed so to ensure the gap between NEET PG exam and councelling date is reduced.

    A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and S R Bhat was informed by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati, representing the National Board of Examinations (NBE), that NEET PG admit cards have been released on Monday as per the original schedule and the counselling may begin on July 15, 2023.

    On Friday, the NBE told the Supreme Court that nearly 2.09 lakh students have registered for the NEET PG 2023 exam and no alternate date for conducting the medical examination may be at hand in the near future if the entrance exam is delayed.

     

    “There is no date available in the near future with our technology partner to conduct the NEET PG exam,” she told the SC bench.

    SRINAGAR: ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar on Monday visited district Pulwama where he held a detailed security review meeting in which officers of Police and other security forces participated.

    In the security meeting officers including Army’s Sector Commander, DIG Police, DIG CRPF, SSP Pulwama, Army’s CO and CRPF’s Commandants and other officers were present. ADGP Kashmir was briefed about the overall security measures put in place by the participating officers.

    During the meeting, ADGP Kashmir imparted upon them to implement additional security measures in order to prevent such terror incidents. While instructing the officers present in the meeting, the ADGP Kashmir stressed to enhance counter-terror operations in Pulwama District. He also directed police officers present in the meeting to generate more humint & techint and further launch counter-terrorist operations along with security forces.

    SRINAGAR: Acting tough against the persons involved in illegal extraction/mining and transportation of minerals, Police have arrested 04 persons and seized 04 vehicles in Budgam.

    A police party of Police Station Chadoora during patrolling at Aalipora Chadoora intercepted 04 vehicles (Tippers) bearing registration numbers JK03J-6145, JK03C-8254, JK04B-055, and JK13A-0470 carrying illegally extracted bed material from Nalla Shaliganga Chadoora. Subsequently, all 04 tippers were seized & 04 drivers of the said vehicles were arrested on the spot. They have been identified as Abid Hussain Bhat son of Maqbool Bhat resident of Chadoora, Gulam Muhammad Wani son of Abdul Kabir resident of Kakawring Charar Sharief, Younis Farooq Yatoo son of Farooq Ahmad resident of Nagam Chadoora, and Shabir Ahmad Bhat son of Gulam Nabi resident of Dooniwari, Chadoora. They have been shifted to the police station where they remain in custody.

    Accordingly, a case with FIR No. 25/2023 under relevant sections of laws has been registered at Police Station Chadoora and an investigation has been initiated.

    Persons found indulging in illegal extraction/mining activities shall be dealt with as per law. Community members are requested to share information regarding the crimes in their neighborhood with their concerned police units.
