Bengaluru: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday held a meeting with former Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar — who has switched to the grand old party from the BJP, and other senior party leaders at Dharwad in Karnataka.

The meeting, held at a hotel, was also attended by prominent leaders of the Lingayat community.

During the meeting, Priyanka Gandhi gave a call to ensure Shettar’s victory. He will contest the May 10 Assembly election from Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency.

    MS Education Academy

Notably, Union Home Minister and former BJP president Amit Shah has recently held a series of meetings. The saffron party has deputed its veteran member and former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa to ensure Shettar’s defeat on his home turf “to send a strong message to the defectors”.

A source said that Congress has organised the meeting as the BJP is “trying to draw in Congress leaders to its fold in Dharwad and Hubballi”.

Thousands of people participated in the roadshow of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later in Kundagol.

Addressing the crowd, she said “if the Congress is voted to power, the life of people would reform”.

“During the regime of BJP, the woes of people were only aggravated,” she said.

“The party has given guarantee cards to every house in Karnataka. We have assured that women heads of families would get Rs 2,000. The schemes such as Anna Bhagya and Ksheera Bhagya would be implemented. Women will get free travel facilities. We will fulfill all assurances,” she said.

The vote should be given to the future of the state. The price rise has affected people. This election will shape the future of young children, she said.

Priyanka Gandhi would address public meetings in Khanapur on Sunday. She is also scheduled to hold a public meeting at Jamakhandi in Bagalkot district as well as in north Karnataka.

  • Congress hurled abuses at me 91 times: PM in poll-bound Karnataka

Congress hurled abuses at me 91 times: PM in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Humnabad/Vijayapura/ Kudachi: Training guns on the Congress over its president M Mallikarjun Kharge’s ‘venomous snake’ barb at him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the party and its leaders have hurled at him different types of abuses 91 times till now.

Accusing the Congress of also abusing the dominant Lingayat community in poll-bound Karnataka, the Prime Minister further said the grand old party had even abused Babasaheb Ambedkar and was engaged in abusing Veer Savarkar, and people will respond to their abuses with votes.

Modi — on his first visit to the State for campaigning after elections were declared on March 29 — gave a new slogan ‘Ee baariya nirdhara, Bahumatada BJP Sarkara’ (This time’s decision; majority BJP government) for the party, as he stressed on the party coming back to power with a full majority.

    MS Education Academy

Modi’s stress on BJP getting a clear mandate in May 10 Assembly polls is significant, as the party had not got a majority both in 2008 and 2018, when it emerged as the single largest party, and had to form a government with the backing of MLAs from opposition ranks who switched loyalty to it and Independents.

The Congress hates everyone who speaks about the common man, who brings out their corruption, who attacks their politics of selfishness. “Contress’s hate against such people will become permanent. In this election too, the Congress once again has started abusing me.”

Addressing a public rally at Humnabad in Bidar district, he said, “Someone has made a list of such abuses against me and it has been sent to me. Till now, Congress people have abused me 91 times with different types. Had Congress people put efforts in good governance and boosting the morale of its workers, instead of wasting time on this dictionary of abuses, Congress would not have been in such a pathetic plight.”

Making a speech in a campaign rally in Karnataka on Thursday, Kharge likened Modi to a venomous snake. As a row erupted, he later backtracked stating that his intention was not to hurt anyone’s feelings and the “statement was not for PM Modi, but for the ideology he represents.”

Modi said: “Insulting those who work for the poor and the country is Congress’ history”.

“I’m not the only one who has been attacked like this. Last election, they ran a campaign ‘Chowkidar chor hai’ (Watchman is a thief), then they said ‘Modi Chor’, then they said ‘OBC community are chor’, and now as the election season has started in Karnataka they showed the guts of calling my Lingayat brothers and sisters ‘chor’.”

“Congress people listen with open ears, whenever you have abused someone they have punished you in such a way that you have not been able to withstand it. This time, Karnataka has decided to respond to the abuses, the pain inflicted to their pride, through votes,” he said.

Noting that abuses are hurled at him by top Congress leaders, Modi said the Congress is a party that had abused Babasaheb Ambedkar too.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar himself had once said in detail that Congress abused him repeatedly. Congress had called Babasaheb Ambedkar ‘Rakshas’, ‘Rashtra Drohi’, ‘Dagabaaz Dost’…you will be shocked to hear. Even today, we see how Congress abuses Veer Savarkar. Congress has abused stalwarts of this country,” he said.

“Looking at this, I feel that Congress ‘respects’ me as they did to Babasaheb Ambedkar, and Veer Savarkar, as Congress is abusing me in a similar way. I feel it is a gift to me. Let the Congress abuse me, I will continue to work for the country and its people. With your (people’s) blessings, all their abuses will get mixed in mud. Congress people understand as much mud you sling at us, the lotus (BJP symbol) will bloom,” he added.

Later, speaking at a rally in Kudachi in Belagavi district, the Prime Minister expressed confidence about the party coming back to power with a full majority.

He said this was his third rally on the first day of his campaigning in the State after the election was declared, and it looks like the people of Karnataka have decided to bring in a strong and stable BJP government in Karnataka.

“Ee baariya nirdhara, Bahumatada BJP Sarkara- can be heard everywhere… Lotus is the sign of Karnataka’s progress, only BJP has the roadmap for development,” he further said.

Earlier during his Humnabad rally, Modi while stressing the need for a majority pointed out that Karnataka has faced the consequences of unstable and coalition governments. “The focus of an unstable government would not be on serving people,” he said.

Reminding former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy as the head of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government had admitted that he was functioning at the “mercy of Congress”, he said, “That fear of saving the seat or power, won’t allow them to do anything for you.”

Alleging that Congress was abusing him, Modi said he has shut out all its sources of corruption. Only BJP can provide a stable and strong government in Karnataka, he claimed.

“Modi has shut the way for Congress’ corruption. Congress means corruption. While Congress’ account has ‘Corruption Kaal’, there is ‘Amrit Kaal’ (golden period) in BJP’s account. Congress is worried as all its sources (of corruption) have been shut, so they are chanting Modi teri kabar khudegi’ (Modi, your grave will be dug). While Congress is busy digging Modi’s grave, people are ensuring lotus blooms,” he said.

Earlier addressing a rally in the district headquarters town of Vijayapura, the Prime Minister took a swipe at former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying that the Congress leader was seeking votes in the name of his retirement from active politics.

He said the people of Karnataka will not choose a “tired and defeated” Congress but a BJP teeming with enthusiasm.

Modi’s jibe was aimed at 75-year-old Siddaramaiah who recently announced that this will be his last election and he would not contest polls anymore.

Tired, defeated: Modi’s jibe at Congress leader Siddaramaiah in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Vijayapura: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a swipe at former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah saying that the Congress leader was seeking votes in the name of his retirement from active politics.

He said the people of Karnataka will not choose a “tired and defeated” Congress but a BJP teeming with enthusiasm.

“A Congress leader is seeking votes in the name of their retirement. His biggest poll plank is: ‘This is my last election. Give me a chance. What a pathetic state they have reached!” Modi said in an election rally in the district headquarters town of Vijayapura.

    MS Education Academy

The Prime Minister’s jibe was aimed at 75-year-old Siddaramaiah who recently announced that this will be his last election and he would not contest polls anymore.

“I know that the people of Karnataka will not choose a tired and defeated Congress but the BJP which is bubbling with enthusiasm,” Modi added.

He said there is one slogan of ‘Ee Baariya Nirdhara, Bahumatada BJPiya Sarkara’ (This time the decision, a BJP government with the majority) echoing from every corner of Karnataka.

In an attempt to strike a chord and connect with the dominant Lingayat community of Karnataka who are followers of 12th-century social reformer Basaveshwara who was born in Vijayapura, Modi said his party follows the teachings of the poet-saint in toto.

The Prime Minister said the 2023 Assembly election in Karnataka, which will take place on May 10, is about building the state in the next 25 years.

“The BJP has a definite roadmap for the development of Karnataka. Congress has neither the roadmap nor any enthusiasm,” Modi told the crowd.

The ruling BJP is pulling out all stops to return to power in this year’s state election. The party is facing a tough challenge from the opposition Congress.

Voting will take place on May 10 and the counting of votes is on May 13.

KCR funding both Congress, JD(S): Bandi in Karnataka poll rally

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Congress party is trying to use Karnataka as an ATM to campaign for the next year’s general elections across the country, the Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party president alleged on Friday.

Participating in the election campaign for the BJP in the Mulabagilu assembly constituency in Karnataka, Sanjay said the Congress, if voted to power in the state, would loot the people and mint money, so that it could use it for its election campaign across the country in the next year’s general elections.

“In a way, the Congress is planning to use Karnataka as an ATM to make big money for funding its election campaign in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Stating that development in Karnataka would come to a halt if the Congress is voted to power, the BJP president reminded that the Congress would not be able to mobilise funds from the Centre, as it was in power there. “Where does it get funds for development? From Pakistan?” he asked.

He alleged that the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) had a secret understanding in the elections. “Wherever the Congress is strong, the JD (S) would field a weak candidate and vice versa. Both the parties are getting funds from Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao,” he said.

Sanjay said the Congress and the JD (S) haven’t done anything for the development of Karnataka in the last 70 years and whatever development the state had witnessed, it was only during the BJP regime with Central funds.

Sanjay claimed that the BJP was the only party which was putting up a strong resistance to the AIMIM in the old city of Hyderabad. “At Bhagya Lakshmi temple near Charminar, the BJP has hoisted the saffron flag, uprooting the MIM flags,” he pointed out.

He lashed out at the Congress leaders for saying that their party would lift the ban on the Popular Front of India if it was voted to power. “We need to drive such leaders away in the elections,” he said.

Stating that the BJP was the only party which would protect the Hindu dharma and work for the majority of Hindus, Sanjay called upon the voters to hound out the parties which celebrate the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, who had committed rapes and murders on SCs, STs and Lingayats.

“There is no question of tolerating such forces who belittle Hindu dharma and try to split Hindu votes in the name of castes, creed and colour,” he said and appealed to the voters to elect the BJP in order to prevent the outbreak of terrorism in the state.

Earlier in the day, Sanjay conducted door-to-door campaign for the BJP at Yelahanka on the outskirts of Bengaluru. He asked the party leaders and cadre to step up their public outreach campaign. “We need to meet the people directly door to door and explain the good work done by the BJP government in the state and the Modi government at the Centre,” he said.

Several BJP workers welcomed Sanjay by bursting crackers. They showed enthusiasm in taking selfies with him.

The Telangana BJP chief also held a teleconference with party leaders of Telangana and asked them to make the 100th episode of Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme a big success.

“There should be public viewing of the Prime Minister’s programme to be held in at least 100 centres at every assembly constituency, which must be viewed by at least 100 people at each centre. Telangana should be at the top in the country in highlighting the programme,” he added.

In the evening, he will be in Mysuru and hold a mega road show from Vidyapeetha circle to Bannimantap.

The state’s ruling BJP government is relying heavily on Modi’s visit and is planning to rope in some 2 lakh people for each public rally. In the north, his visit is expected to counter rebellion and keep the Lingayat vote bank intact for the party.

In the south, the BJP wants to consolidate its position and break the stronghold of the JD (S) and Congress in the districts of Kolar, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur.

Also on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also take up high-voltage campaigning in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Amit Shah says Congress will take Karnataka into ‘reverse gear’

    [ad_1]

Dharwad: Lashing out at the Congress in poll-bound Karnataka on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the former would put the state into “reverse gear”, depriving it of the benefits of “double-engine sarkar”.

Addressing a rally at the Navalgund Assembly constituency on Friday, Shah said, “One hand, there is the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and on the other, is the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. This (Karnataka Assembly) election is an opportunity for you to decide if you want a double engine sarkar led by PM Modi, which will take Karnataka forward, or the Congress’s reverse gear sarkar, which will take Karnataka backwards.”/

Earlier, on Friday, the BJP’s star campaigner addressed a gathering at Shirahatti where he said each vote to the BJP will go to protecting the state from the banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI).

    MS Education Academy

“Each vote counts. So ensure that it goes to the right leadership. When you cast a vote in favour of lotus (the BJP’s symbol), you will not vote to elect an MLA or a minister or Chief Minister. Your vote will further strengthen PM Modi’s hands in creating a ‘Mahan Karnataka’. Your vote will protect Karnataka from the PFI.”

Further hitting out at the Congress over its national president Mallikarjun Kharge’s “poisonous snake” barb at PM Modi, the Union Home Minister said, “The whole world admires Modi-ji. But see the level that the Congress and its leadership has stooped to.

The remarks made by their leaders about Modi-ji are utterly shameful. Kharge-ji called Modi-ji a ‘venomous snake’. Can you vote for such a party?” he said.

The polls for the 224-seat assembly will take place on May 10 and the counting of votes will be held on May 13

Establish three more NIA courts in Karnataka within six months: High Court

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka has recommended that three more Special Courts for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases be established in three revenue divisions of Karnataka, within the next six months.

“We hereby recommend the State Government to constitute/establish three Special Courts for trial of NIA cases in Mysore Division, Belagavi Division and Kalburgi Division within a period of six months from the date of receipt of copy of the order,” the Division Bench of B Veerappa and Justice Venkatesh Naik T said in their judgment dismissing the appeals filed by 41 accused in the Hubballi riots case.

It would “ensure speedy trial and disposal of the NIA cases” in order to make justice accessible to the needy and “to fulfil the scope and object of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act”, the bench said.

    MS Education Academy

A Special Court had rejected the bail pleas of the accused after which they approached the HC in two separate petitions.

In its common order on the two petitions, the HC said in its April 20 judgment, “On re-appreciation of the entire material on record, we answer the point raised in these criminal appeals in the negative holding that the appellants/accused have not made out a case to interfere with the impugned order passed by the Special Court rejecting their applications for regular bail in the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case.”

While dealing with the bail petitions, the HC also noted that very old NIA cases had also been pending.

“As of today, for the entire State, the Government has established only one Special Court at Bangalore to deal with the cases under National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. By careful perusal of the statistical data, it is clearly depicted that NIA cases which are more than 8 to 9 years old are pending,” it said.

The Court said it was high time that new courts were established.

“If the newly proposed Special Courts are not constituted/established, one Special Court in the entire State would be overburdened and will lead to inordinate delay in trial and disposal of NIA cases, which is against the Constitutional mandate as contemplated under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India,” it said.

In Karnataka, Bengaluru Division consists of nine districts; Mysore Division consists eight districts, Belagavi Division consists seven districts and Kalburgi Division consists of six districts, the HC noted.

The HC also listed the number of cases pending in the existing Special Court. It found that one case was nine years old, two cases each were eight and seven years old, six cases were five years old, three cases six years old, eight cases two years old and five cases one year old.

“It is high time for the State Government to fulfill the scope and object of the UA(P) Act and ensure speedy trial and disposal by constituting/establishing three more Special Courts for trial of NIA cases in other revenue Divisions of Karnataka,” the HC said.

The HC was hearing the appeal of 41 accused in the Hubballi riots on the night of April 16, 2022.

A complaint had been filed against a person for his Whatsapp status showing a saffron flag on a masjid.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Hubballi rural police station demanding action. They allegedly, with the “intention of committing the murder” of the police personnel, “assaulted with clubs, pelted stones and threw chappals on the police and caused injuries, destroyed the vehicles of police and public and government properties.”

The police booked several people for the riots, and later the case was handed over to the NIA. The bail petitions of the accused were rejected by the Special Court on December 26, 2022 after which they approached the HC.

Rejecting their plea, the HC said, “Though several contentions urged by the learned counsel for the appellants for granting bail and the learned SPP for rejecting the bail, the fact remains that the accused have not made out any prima facie case to grant bail.”

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) suspended its Gulbarga district president Abdul Raheem alias Mirchi Seth for alleged anti party activities.

Abdul Raheem, who worked with the AIMIM for quite a long time had rebelled against the party after denial of a ticket in the upcoming Karnataka state polls, and is independently contesting from Gulbarga (North) seat in the ensuring assembly elections.

Following his decision the party suspended him from the primary membership of the AIMIM.

In a tweet, AIMIM Karwan MLA Kauser Mohiuddin stated “I would like to announce that Abdul Raheem alias Mirchi Seth AIMIM President Gulbarga has been suspended from AIMIM party responsibilities/assignments with immediate effect. Any actions of his have no approval from AIMIM.”

The AIMIM, led by its national president and Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi, is also planning to field candidates in about 25 constituencies and is eyeing an electoral alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Assembly elections in Karnataka.

State unit chief Ghani earlier this month told PTI that said the AIMIM is in talks with the JD(S) headed by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda for an alliance but the latter is yet to respond to the offer. He said the party would contest in about 25 segments in the state.

Karnataka: Kharge likens Modi to ‘poisonous’ snake, BJP hits out at Cong chief

    [ad_1]

Gadag: Congress President M Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a poisonous snake, drawing the BJP’s ire.

Addressing a public meeting at Ron in Gadag district, as part of the party’s campaign for the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka, he said: “don’t make a mistake. Modi is like a poisonous snake. If you say, ‘no, it’s not poisonous. let’s lick it and find out.’ Don’t go to lick it. If you lick, you die.”

Kharge further added, “(if you think that) No, no, this is not a poison because Modi has given it, ‘good man’ Prime Minister has given it, let’s try it and lick it’. If you lick that poison then you will sleep forever”.

BJP IT department chief Amit Malviya, who also shared the video where Kharge made those comments, on Twitter, said: “Now Congress President Kharge calls Prime Minister Modi poisonous snake’ What started with Sonia Gandhi’s maut ka saudagar’, and we know how it ended, the Congress continues to plummet to new depths. The desperation shows Congress is losing ground in Karnataka and knows it”.

Kharge later told reporters he only said the BJP was like a snake, and that party’s ideology is like a poison. “If you support that ideology and lick (try) it, death is certain.”

“I did not speak against him (Modi) because I have already said that I never make personal comments,” he said.
